both stages: 28-tin family screen in CSI 464 and CSI 468 plus 12 full-size confirmation candles · 8% · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many fragrances should I test? One per family you sell — six in this example: citrus, fresh, floral, woody, spice, gourmand — plus an unscented blank of each wax.

Why an unscented blank? It separates the wax's own tops, frosting and shade from what the oil does. CSI publishes no colour or discolouration data, so the blank is your reference.

Can I screen in small candles? Yes for fragrance-interaction lines (sweat, colour, tops, cold throw, a throw ranking) — the 85 g tin has a published fill. Confirm burn lines in your real jar on the two weakest oils.

What does it cost? ₹4,272.52 for the 28-tin screen; ₹3,368.40 for the full-size confirmation. See the priced kit.
The short answer
Answer: Test one representative oil from each fragrance family in each candidate wax, with an unscented blank; score sweating, colour, tops, frosting and throw over four weeks; then confirm the two weakest oils in your real jar.
Why: Oils differ in volatility, density and colour behaviour. A wax that works with one oil may sweat, darken or throw weakly with another — and the collection wax must pass them all.
Watch: Load ceilings: CSI 464 is rated up to 10%, CSI 468 and Chunks up to 13%. If any family needs more than 10% in the real jar, CSI 464 cannot carry it. How many families.

The Stage 1 grid: two candidate waxes across six fragrance families, with an unscented blank of each wax on the left. Read down a column for oil problems (fails in both waxes) and across a row for wax problems (fails with several families). Every cell is blank on purpose — CSI publishes no throw, colour or sweating data for any wax or oil.
Straight answer
I want one soy wax for my entire candle collection — what should I test across different fragrances before committing to a single wax?
Test one representative oil from every fragrance family you sell, in each candidate wax, beside an unscented blank — then confirm the two weakest oils in your real jar. Oils differ in how volatile, dense and colour-prone they are, so a wax that is perfect with one oil can sweat, darken, frost or throw weakly with another; a collection wax is approved by its worst family. Screen in 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins (CSI's one container with a published fill): six families × two waxes × two tins, plus blanks, scored for tops, frosting, colour against the blank, sweating and cold throw over four weeks, and a first hot-throw ranking. Read the grid down for oil problems and across for wax problems. Check ceilings on paper first: CSI 464 is rated up to 10%, CSI 468 up to 13%. The screen costs ₹4,272.52; full-size confirmation ₹3,368.40.
One line: one oil per family, an unscented blank, read the grid both ways — and approve the wax that survives the hardest family.
The collection screen on this page tests six fragrance families in two waxes — CSI 464 and CSI 468 — in 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins, plus an unscented blank of each, for ₹4,272.52 in CSI materials. The full-size confirmation on the two weakest oils adds ₹3,368.40. The tin is the one CSI container with a published fill weight, which is why it does the screening.

Test the families, not every bottle

A wax that is perfect with lavender has passed one test. A collection wax has to pass the hard ones.

Choosing one soy wax for a whole range is a good commercial goal. One wax means one stock line, one batch sheet, one set of temperatures, one reorder point and one retained sample to compare against. It also means one point of failure: if the wax and a fragrance do not get on — the candle sweats, discolours, throws weakly or tops badly — every candle of that fragrance carries the problem. The test before committing is therefore not "does this wax work?" but "does this wax work with every kind of oil I sell?"

Fragrance oils differ a great deal in how they behave in wax. In general candle-making practice, light citrus and fresh oils are commonly described as volatile and quick to fade; heavy florals, woods and resins as dense and slow; spice and vanilla oils are commonly associated with colour change over time, because ingredients such as vanillin are known to darken. CSI publishes no composition, vanillin content or discolouration data for any oil, so none of that can be read off a product page — it has to be seen in wax. The practical way to cover a range is to pick one representative oil per family you sell, test them all in each candidate wax, and include an unscented blank so you can tell the wax's own behaviour from the oil's.

This page uses six families — citrus, fresh/aquatic, floral, woody, spice and gourmand — and two candidate waxes with different published ceilings: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (up to 10%) and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (up to 13%). The ceiling matters for a collection in a way it does not for one candle: if any oil in your range needs more than 10% to reach your throw floor, CSI 464 cannot carry that oil at all without exceeding its maker's stated maximum. That is a paper check you can do before the first tin is poured.

The CSI principle
A collection wax is approved by its worst fragrance, not its best.
Pick one representative oil per family, include an unscented blank, and read the grid both ways: down for oil problems, across for wax problems.

Which oils stand in for your collection

Build the panel from what you actually sell, one oil per family. If your range has two florals, use the one you sell most; if you have no gourmand, drop that column. The example below uses six in-stock CSI oils as stand-ins for six families. The "why it is in the panel" column describes general candle-making experience of each family, phrased as what makers commonly watch for — not as a property CSI has measured in that oil.

One oil per family · 15 g sizes in stock · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · family notes are general practice, not oil data
The six-family panel
Family Panel oil Why it is in the panel 15 g price Tin screen needs Buy
Citrus Citrus Lemon light, sharp top notes — commonly watched for fading throw ₹81.42 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹162.84
Fresh / aquatic Blue Ocean clean, airy profile — commonly watched for fading throw ₹93.22 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹186.44
Floral Jasmine heavy white floral — commonly watched for sweating at higher loads ₹103.00 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹206.00
Woody Woody Oud dense base notes — commonly watched for slow throw, tops ₹93.22 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹186.44
Spice Cinnamon warm spice — commonly watched for colour change ₹106.20 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹212.40
Gourmand Vanilla Bean sweet vanilla — commonly watched for colour change, sweating ₹130.00 28.6 g 2 × 15 g · ₹260.00

Each 85 g tin at 8% takes 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. Four tins per oil — two in each wax — need 27.2 g, or 28.6 g with a 5% allowance (working assumption). Two 15 g bottles cover that for every oil in the panel; the 15 g size is CSI's de facto sample, and for these six oils two 15 g bottles cost less than one 50 g. How many fragrance types to test before approving a wax goes further on choosing the panel, including when six is too few.

Use your own bestsellers where you can
A stand-in tells you about a family. Your own bestseller tells you about revenue. If one oil earns most of your money, put it in the panel in place of its family's stand-in — a failure there matters more than a failure anywhere else.

Stage 1: the tin screen

The 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin is the one CSI container whose fill weight is published, so every tin gets exactly the same wax and oil. Tins are a screen for the fragrance-interaction lines: sweating, colour change, tops, frosting, cold throw and a first hot-throw ranking. They are not a substitute for burning your real jar — a tin's pool, wick and heat are not those of a 200 g glass candle — which is why Stage 2 exists.

1
Pour the grid in one sessionSix oils × two waxes × two tins = 24 scented tins, plus two unscented tins per wax = 28. One oil lot each. Handle each wax by its page: CSI 464's spec table gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range; CSI 468's page gives pour at 58–60°C, with a melting point of 50–53°C.
2
Label by cell, not by nameWrite a cell code on the base (for example 464-C1 for CSI 464, citrus, tin 1) so whoever scores throw does not know the oil or wax.
3
Photograph tops next morningAll 28 tins in one frame per wax. Tops and frosting in the unscented tins tell you what the wax does on its own.
4
Shelf tins: weekly checks to four weeksOne tin per cell stays on an ordinary shelf, out of direct light. Score sweating, colour against the unscented blank, tops and frosting each week, with a photo.
5
Cold throw at the same cure ageScore every scented tin blind at, for example, 7 and 14 days. Rank within each family: is the oil stronger in CSI 464 or CSI 468?
6
Burn tins: a first hot-throw rankingBurn one tin per cell in matched pairs (same oil, both waxes), 3–4 hours, same room. Score hot throw blind. Treat it as a ranking within each oil, not a verdict on your jar.
7
Read the grid both waysDown each column: an oil that does badly in both waxes is an oil problem. Across each row: a wax that does badly with two or more families is a wax problem. Choose the two weakest oils for Stage 2.

The shortcut: testing the collection in the wax you already like, with no second wax and no blank. When the vanilla tin goes darker, you cannot tell whether the wax, the oil or the light did it. Fix: always include the unscented blank, and a second wax. A colour change that appears in both waxes and not in the blank is the oil; a change that appears in one wax only is the wax–oil pairing. CSI publishes no colour or discolouration data, so the blank is your only reference. Storage testing for white candles uses the same idea over a longer period.

Stage 2: full-size confirmation on the hardest oils

If the two hardest oils pass in your real jar, the easy ones will not be the problem.

Take the two oils that scored worst in the tin screen and make them as real 200 g candles in both waxes: three per oil per wax, 12 in all, in the White Matte Glass Jar with Eco Thin C1 wicks. Each candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. These candles answer the burn lines a tin cannot: time to full pool, pool depth, flame, soot, jar reading and full-life end. The priced example uses Vanilla Bean and Citrus Lemon as placeholders — substitute the two oils your own screen picked.

Labelled working practice · Stage 2 · 200 g at 8%

Oil (placeholder) CSI 464 CSI 468 Purpose
Vanilla Bean 3 (2 burn, 1 to end of life) 3 Burn lines, hot throw in the real jar
Citrus Lemon 3 3 Same
Total 6 6 12 candles

The rule for Stage 2 is the usual one: one candle of each wax lit together, in the same room, 3–4 hours per cycle with full cool-down (a commonly used working practice), and a scoring sheet filled at the end of every burn. Neither wax may be worse than the other on flame, soot, mushrooming or jar reading — CSI publishes no numeric limits, so the comparison is the standard, together with your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to. The objective comparison post has the full burn sheet.

What one wax across six oils costs

One reason makers want a single wax is cost control. The arithmetic shows where the real cost differences in a collection sit. Below is the material cost of a 200 g candle at 8% for each panel oil in both waxes, at the 10 kg wax price and the 1 kg oil price, with the ₹5.90 wick and ₹70.80 jar; it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

200 g at 8% · wax at 10 kg (CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026) · oil at 1 kg (CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026)
Per-candle cost across the collection, two waxes
Oil Oil ₹/g at 1 kg In CSI 464 In CSI 468 Difference
Citrus Lemon ₹2.83 ₹215.37 ₹239.22 ₹23.85
Blue Ocean ₹4.96 ₹249.36 ₹273.20 ₹23.85
Jasmine ₹3.92 ₹232.83 ₹256.68 ₹23.85
Woody Oud ₹4.53 ₹242.56 ₹266.41 ₹23.85
Cinnamon ₹5.31 ₹255.02 ₹278.87 ₹23.85
Vanilla Bean ₹7.65 ₹292.40 ₹316.24 ₹23.85

The wax choice moves every candle by the same ₹23.85. The oil choice moves candles by up to ₹77.02 — from Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83 a gram to Vanilla Bean at ₹7.65. In a collection, the wax decision is about consistency and risk, not price: a wax that saves ₹23.85 per candle but fails the vanilla column costs you a whole product line. The load ceiling matters here too. At 200 g, CSI 464's 10% maximum is 20 g of oil; CSI 468's 13% is 26 g. If the tin screen shows one family needs more than 10% to reach your throw floor — confirmed in the real jar — CSI 464 cannot be your single collection wax without exceeding its maker's stated maximum.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would suit a wax seller to sell you two waxes — one for the easy oils and one for the hard ones. Sometimes that is the right answer, but usually it is not: two waxes double your stock lines, batch sheets and retained samples. If one wax passes every family within your tolerances, buy one wax, even if a second wax of ours scores slightly better on one column. And if CSI 464 passes everything at 8%, it is ₹23.85 a candle cheaper than CSI 468 — take the saving.

The decision rule: approve, approve with exceptions, or keep looking

Decide only after Stage 2 has finished its full-life candles and the Stage 1 shelf tins have had their four weeks. Write the fail thresholds before you pour; the rule then makes itself.

Apply after both stages · working decision rule
One wax for the collection?
Grid result Meaning Decision
One wax passes every family, both stages A true collection wax Approve it; order below
Both waxes pass everything Either works The cheaper per candle — CSI 464 by ₹23.85 at 10 kg rates
One family fails in both waxes An oil problem, not a wax problem Optimise that oil separately — 5416 — or replace it
One wax fails one family; the other passes all A pairing problem Approve the wax that passes all
Each wax fails a different family No single wax yet Per-oil optimisation first; a second wax only as a last resort
A family needs above 10% in the real jar Outside CSI 464's stated maximum CSI 468 (or Chunks, also 13%) for the collection

Then size the order for the whole range. As an example, six fragrances at 40 candles each a month is 240 candles, or 46.37 kg of wax with a 5% allowance. In CSI 464 that is 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg for ₹23,847.80; in CSI 468 it is 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg for ₹29,965.00. Pilot the first month on 5 kg bags if you have not run the wax at volume before, keep 200–300 g of the approved bag as a retained sample, and write the order date on every bag — CSI publishes no lot numbers. Buying for 20 kg a month and setting a reorder point take the stock side further.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. The tin screen takes about a month including the four-week shelf checks, so a collection decision started this week lands in time for festive production only if Stage 2 runs alongside the later shelf checks. Send us your fragrance list on WhatsApp and we will help you choose the panel oils and price both stages — container soy bags go up to 10 kg, larger quantities by quote, and no volume discount figure is published.
Plan my collection screen on WhatsApp

Three situations come up often. If one oil works and another does not in the same wax, lavender works but vanilla does not sets out per-oil optimisation before blaming the wax. If your collection spans very different sizes, 50 g and 500 g in one wax adds a size dimension to the grid. And if three waxes each win a different column, the weighted decision matrix decides between them. For the overall method, the series hub starts from the beginning.

Test one oil from every family you sell. The wax that survives the hardest family is the one you can stock alone.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Both candidate waxes and all six panel oils on this page are ours. We do not tell you which wax carries a collection better, and we do not describe any oil's composition or colour behaviour — we publish no such data. We do tell you to stock one wax rather than two if one passes everything.

Every soy-wax price here is CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Tin prices are from the catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified 10 September 2026 (wick packs rechecked 25 September 2026). Grams per tin and per candle, pack rounding and per-candle costs are plain arithmetic.

The six families, the stand-in oils, two tins per cell, four-week shelf checks, cure checkpoints, three candles per oil per wax in Stage 2, the 5% pour-loss allowance and the 40-candles-per-fragrance volume are labelled working practices and examples. Frequently asked questions

Can I use one soy wax for all my candle fragrances?
Often, yes — but only after testing one oil from every fragrance family you sell in that wax, with an unscented blank, through four weeks of storage and a full-size burn of the hardest oils.
Which fragrance oils are hardest to use in soy wax?
It depends on the oil and wax pairing, and CSI publishes no per-oil data. Makers commonly watch citrus and fresh oils for fading throw, heavy florals and gourmands for sweating, and vanilla and spice oils for colour change — test them.
Why does vanilla fragrance discolour soy candles?
Vanillin is commonly known to darken over time. CSI publishes no vanillin content for its oils, so compare a vanilla candle against an unscented blank of the same wax over several weeks.
Do I need a different wick for every fragrance?
Not always, but heavy or dense oils can change how the pool forms. Confirm the burn lines for your hardest oils in the real jar. Formulation complexity and wick tests covers the commercial side.
Can I test soy wax in small tins instead of full candles?
Yes for screening sweating, colour, tops, frosting and cold throw, and for a rough hot-throw ranking. Burn behaviour must be confirmed in your real jar and wick.
What fragrance load should a collection use?
One working load for the whole range, such as 8%, inside the wax maker's stated ceiling: CSI 464 up to 10%, Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%. A family that needs more is a constraint on which wax can carry the range.
Screen the whole range
One oil per family, two waxes, one blank. Approve the wax that survives the hardest family.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The family-panel screening method applies to any wax and any fragrance range.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L; 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The 85 g fill is the tin's published fill weight. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, no melt point published; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, a melt/pour working range of 80–90°C in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry, described by the maker as single-pour with glass adhesion and low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl, Premium Coconut Soy, Soy Butter and Soy Pillar — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. Family descriptions are general candle-making experience, not CSI oil data; CSI publishes no oil composition, vanillin, discolouration, throw or sweating data. Two tins per cell, four-week shelf checks, Stage 2 counts, the 5% allowance and the 40-candles-per-fragrance example are labelled assumptions. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
