I Want to Introduce a Smaller Affordable Candle — How Do I Determine Whether the Lower Selling Price Still Makes Sense After Fixed Packaging Costs?
Aktie
Why doesn't a smaller candle save as much as I expect? Because oil and wax are the only costs that shrink. The tin's oil and wax cost ₹72.58; its wick, tin, packaging, packing and labour cost ₹99.53 whatever its size.
What is the lowest price a small candle can sell at? The price where it earns nothing. For our tin sold alone, about ₹175.62 if the customer pays shipping and ₹241.95 with free shipping (example costs). See the floor price.
Will it eat into sales of my main candle? Some buyers will trade down. In our example, each switch from the ₹799 candle to the ₹399 tin costs ₹234.39 of contribution; the tin stays worthwhile up to about 56 switches a month. The cannibalisation test.
The small candle, priced
Start with the recipes. The main candle is a 200 g container candle at an 8% load: 16 g of Cinnamon Vanilla and 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte jar. The small candle fills the golden tin to its published 85 g: 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. A second small option, the heart velvet jar, holds 50 g of wax by its listing, so 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax at the same load. Wick sizing for these small containers is not published; the Eco Thin C1 is used for costing, and a burn test decides.
| Candle | Oil | Wax | Wick | Container | Materials | Selling price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 g · White Matte jar | ₹77.41 | ₹93.36 | ₹5.90 | ₹70.80 | ₹247.47 | ₹799 |
| 85 g · golden tin | ₹32.90 | ₹39.68 | ₹5.90 | ₹30.00 | ₹108.48 | ₹399 |
| 50 g · heart velvet jar (red) | ₹19.35 | ₹23.34 | ₹5.90 | ₹45.00 | ₹93.59 | ₹399 |
On materials alone the small candles look excellent: the tin keeps 72.8% of ₹399, against 69.0% of ₹799 for the main candle. That is the trap. Materials are the part of the small candle that shrank. The costs that did not shrink are still to come, and on a ₹399 price they weigh twice as heavily.
| Cost | Main candle (₹799) | Small tin sold alone (₹399) | Small tin as add-on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Label, box, tissue (example) | ₹36.25 | ₹22.63 | ₹7.63 (label + tissue only) |
| Mailer, void fill, tape (example, per order) | ₹31.00 | ₹31.00 | ₹0.00 (shares the main order's) |
| Gateway fee (example 2%) | ₹15.98 | ₹7.98 | ₹7.98 |
| Packing and pouring labour (example) | ₹15.00 | ₹10.00 | ₹10.00 |
| Non-material cost | ₹98.23 | ₹71.61 | ₹25.61 |
Sold alone, the tin's non-material costs are ₹71.61 against the main candle's ₹98.23 — 72.9% of them for half the price. As an add-on they fall to ₹25.61, because the small candle travels in the main order's mailer and needs no box of its own. That single change is worth more than any saving on the recipe. The cost-per-gram post explains the fixed-cost effect in general, and the packaging-per-order post shows how to split packaging per candle and per order.
Three ways to sell it
The same small candle earns very different amounts depending on how it reaches the customer. Here is contribution per candle — what is left after materials, packaging, packing, the gateway fee and labour, before fixed monthly costs — in each case.
| How it sells | Price | Materials | Other costs | Courier absorbed | Contribution | Share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹799 main candle, alone (reference) | ₹799 | ₹247.47 | ₹98.23 | ₹0.00 | ₹453.30 | 56.7% |
| Tin alone, customer pays shipping | ₹399 | ₹108.48 | ₹71.61 | ₹0.00 | ₹218.91 | 54.9% |
| Tin alone, free shipping | ₹399 | ₹108.48 | ₹71.61 | ₹65.00 | ₹153.91 | 38.6% |
| Tin as an add-on to a main order | ₹399 | ₹108.48 | ₹25.61 | ₹0.00 | ₹264.91 | 66.4% |
| Heart jar alone, customer pays shipping | ₹399 | ₹93.59 | ₹71.61 | ₹0.00 | ₹233.80 | 58.6% |
| Heart jar as an add-on | ₹399 | ₹93.59 | ₹25.61 | ₹0.00 | ₹279.80 | 70.1% |
As an add-on the tin keeps 66.4% of its price, more than the main candle's 56.7%. Sold alone with free shipping it keeps 38.6%, and that is before fixed monthly costs and your own time. The heart jar, with only 50 g of wax, earns a little more than the tin in each case because its oil and wax cost less; its extra appeal as a gift is a reason to price it with care rather than a cost saving.
The floor price
The floor is the price at which contribution is exactly zero: materials plus every per-candle and per-order cost, grossed up for the gateway fee. For the tin sold alone with the customer paying shipping, it is ₹175.62. With free shipping it is ₹241.95. Anything above the floor contributes something to fixed costs and profit; anything below loses money on every order, and more orders only lose more.
| Route | Floor price | Headroom at ₹399 | Headroom at ₹499 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tin alone, customer pays shipping | ₹175.62 | ₹223.38 | ₹323.38 |
| Tin alone, free shipping | ₹241.95 | ₹157.05 | ₹257.05 |
| Tin as add-on | ₹128.68 | ₹270.32 | ₹370.32 |
Headroom is not the same as enough. Your fixed monthly costs and your own pay still have to come out of it, as the ladder in the profit post shows. A useful test: does the small candle keep at least as much of its price as your main candle (56.7%)? As an add-on, yes (66.4%); sold alone with shipping charged, nearly (54.9%); with free shipping, no (38.6%) — and every free-shipping order still takes the same packing time as a full-price one.
The cannibalisation test
A cheaper candle does not only bring new buyers. Some people who would have bought the ₹799 candle will buy the ₹399 tin instead. Each of those switches costs you the difference in contribution: ₹453.30 − ₹218.91 = ₹234.39. We cannot tell you how many customers will switch; that depends on your range and your buyers, and we have no data on it. What you can do is work out how many switches the new candle can absorb.
| Main candles | Small tins | Contribution | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the tin | 100 | 0 | ₹45,330.00 |
| After: 30 new buyers alone, 25 add-ons, 12 switch down | 88 | 67 | ₹55,707.37 |
| Change | −12 | +67 | ₹10,377.37 |
With these example counts the tin adds ₹10,377.37 of contribution a month. The gain from new buyers and add-ons would be wiped out at about 56 switches. Track it once the tin is on sale: if main-candle sales fall by more than new small-candle sales justify, the small size is taking margin rather than adding it. The target-pricing post shows how to plan a whole range so each price point has a clear job.
Deciding, step by step
Oils for a small festive candle
Small tins sell well as festive add-ons and gifts, so warm spice and gourmand oils are natural choices. Both below are priced flat from 50 g upwards, so the small candle can be poured from the same bottle as the main range.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 85 g tins at 6.8 g | 200 g jars at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 2.21 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 7.35 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹483.80 | ₹4.84 | 14.71 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹2,301.00 | ₹4.60 | 73.53 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹4,554.80 | ₹4.55 | 147.06 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 85 g tins at 6.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 2.21 |
| 50 g | ₹237.18 | ₹4.74 | 7.35 |

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A small candle range means more containers and more fragrance bottles sold, so the easy advice would be to launch one. This page tests it instead, and says plainly that a small candle shipped alone for free earns far less than the same candle riding in another order.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026.
