Starting Budget · Five Fragrances
With five new scents you will not know which ones sell until they are on the shelf. The oil purchase has to be big enough to learn from and small enough that a slow scent is a small mistake. On ₹20,000, that is 200 g of each.
₹2,760.00
the most oil money that can get stuck if two of your five scents sell slowly, buying 200 g of each · against ₹6,790.00 buying 500 g · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil should I buy of each scent for a launch? 200 g of each, as two 100 g bottles: 12 candles per scent at 16 g, 60 candles in all, for ₹5,754.84 across five scents. See the four strategies.

Why not buy 500 g to get a better price? For most of these five oils 500 g is barely cheaper per gram, and for Pumpkin Spice it is exactly the same as 100 g. Five 500 g packs cost ₹13,213.20 and put up to ₹6,790.00 at risk in two slow scents.

Should I buy more of the scents I think will sell? Only a little, and only if you have a reason. Betting 300 g on two festive scents raises the worst case to ₹3,186.00 if the guess is wrong. Betting on two prices it.

What does the rest of ₹20,000 buy? Five testers, 13 kg of CSI 464 wax, 65 jars, 70 wicks and 80 stickers, leaving ₹1,881.82 to reorder the leading scent. Tools (₹1,475.00) are assumed owned.
The short answer
Oil: 5 testers ₹552.14 · 5 × 200 g ₹5,754.84 (31.5% of ₹20,000).
Everything else: CSI 464 13 kg ₹6,596.20 · 65 White Matte jars ₹4,602.00 · 70 Eco wicks ₹413.00 · 80 stickers ₹200.00 · reserve ₹1,881.82.
Risk: Worst case if two scents are slow: 500 g each ₹6,790.00 · 200 g each ₹2,760.00 · 50 g each ₹740.40. Ten scents on ₹30,000 runs the same trade-off wider.
Five scents, four ways to buy the oil — spend vs cash stuck if two scents are slow Deep · 500 g each₹13,213.20 · ₹6,790.00 at riskcandles per scent · total: 31 each · 156Bet on two · 300/150 g₹5,958.54 · ₹3,186.00 at riskcandles per scent · total: 18 or 9 · 63Even · 200 g each₹5,754.84 · ₹2,760.00 at riskcandles per scent · total: 12 each · 60Thin · 50 g each₹1,523.52 · ₹740.40 at riskcandles per scent · total: 3 each · 15 Light bar = total oil spend. Dark bar = worst case: the two scents you spent most on turn out to be the slow ones.
Each row is one way to buy oil for the same five scents at CSI's listed prices. The light bar is what the oil costs; the dark bar is how much of it is stuck if the two scents you spent most on are the two that sell slowly. Buying 50 g of each keeps risk lowest but gives three candles a scent, too few to learn anything. Buying 200 g of each is the smallest amount that gives a real sample.
Straight answer
I want to launch five candle fragrances with ₹20,000. How much fragrance oil should I buy of each scent without locking too much money into slow sellers?
Buy the same modest amount of each scent: 200 g, as two 100 g bottles. For Fallen Leaves, Pumpkin Spice, Honeydew Melon, Lemongrass and Lime and Vanilla Bean that is ₹5,754.84, and it makes 12 candles per scent at 16 g each, 60 in all. Twelve is enough to see which scent leads; 200 g is small enough that if two scents sell slowly, the most money stuck in them is ₹2,760.00. Buying 500 g of each would cost ₹13,213.20 and put up to ₹6,790.00 at risk, and for most of these oils the 500 g is barely cheaper per gram. Pumpkin Spice costs exactly ₹5.90 a gram at both 100 g and 500 g. Test each scent with a 15 g tester first (₹552.14 for all five). The rest of the ₹20,000 buys 13 kg of CSI 464 wax, 65 jars and 70 wicks, and leaves ₹1,881.82 to reorder whichever scent sells first. That reserve, not a bigger first order, is how you back a winner.
One line: buy fragrance evenly and modestly; back the winner with a reorder, not a guess.
Five 15 g testers first: Fallen Leaves ₹94.40, Pumpkin Spice ₹106.20, Honeydew Melon ₹105.02, Lemongrass and Lime ₹116.52, Vanilla Bean ₹130.00 — ₹552.14. One test candle each in the jar you will sell, before a single 100 g is ordered.

Four ways to buy five scents

Every bottle of oil is a bet on one scent. Wax and jars are bets on the whole range. That is why fragrance is the one line to buy cautiously.

Wax, wicks and jars are shared. If one scent sells slowly, the wax and jars you bought for it simply go into the scent that is selling. Fragrance oil cannot move. A slow scent's oil is only ever that scent's candles. So when you launch five scents, the question is not only how much oil you need; it is how much money you are willing to have stuck if you guess wrong. There are four common ways to buy, and the table prices each one for the same five oils.

Five scents · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026 · 16 g oil per 200 g candle
Spend, candles and money at risk, by strategy
Strategy Oil per scent Oil spend Candles per scent Stuck if two scents are slow (worst case)
Deep 500 g ₹13,213.20 31 ₹6,790.00
Bet on two 300 g × 2, 150 g × 3 ₹5,958.54 18 or 9 ₹3,186.00
Even (this plan) 200 g ₹5,754.84 12 ₹2,760.00
Thin 50 g ₹1,523.52 3 ₹740.40

The worst case is calculated the hard way: it assumes the two scents you spent the most on are the two that sell slowly. The deep strategy is also impossible on this budget in practice. Five 500 g packs make 156 candles, which would need about 29 kg of wax and 156 jars, far more than ₹20,000 can buy after the oil. The thin strategy looks safest, but three candles per scent is not a test of demand. One customer can buy all three. The even strategy is the smallest purchase that produces a readable result.

The number that matters is candles per scent
Before choosing a quantity, decide how many candles of a scent you need to sell before you believe the result. For a small launch, ten to twelve is a sensible working figure. Work backwards: 12 candles × 16 g = 192 g, so 200 g. That is the quantity rule for this whole page.

Does buying more of a scent save money?

The usual reason to buy deep is price: a bigger pack should be cheaper per gram. On CSI's listed prices that is less true than most makers assume. Across the catalogue, 52 of 91 oils that list both 100 g and 1 kg cost within 1% per gram at both sizes, and only 24 save 5% or more. The five scents in this launch show the full range, from a real 22% saving to none at all.

Per gram by pack · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Where each of the five scents gets cheaper
Scent 15 g 50 g 100 g 500 g 1 kg 500 g vs 100 g
Fallen Leaves ₹6.29 ₹4.72 ₹4.72 ₹4.25 ₹4.25 10.0% cheaper
Pumpkin Spice ₹7.08 ₹6.61 ₹5.90 ₹5.90 ₹5.31 same
Honeydew Melon ₹7.00 ₹4.34 ₹4.35 ₹3.40 ₹3.40 22.0% cheaper
Lemongrass and Lime ₹7.77 ₹6.60 ₹5.90 ₹5.20 ₹5.20 11.9% cheaper
Vanilla Bean ₹8.67 ₹8.20 ₹7.90 ₹7.68 ₹7.65 2.8% cheaper

Read across each row. Honeydew Melon is the clear case for buying bigger: ₹4.35 a gram at 100 g against ₹3.40 at 500 g, 22.0% cheaper. Lemongrass and Lime (11.9%) and Fallen Leaves (10.0%) also save at 500 g. Vanilla Bean saves only 2.8%. Pumpkin Spice is exactly ₹5.90 a gram at 100 g and 500 g; only its 1 kg drops, to ₹5.31. Notice too that the 50 g is dearer per gram than the 100 g for Pumpkin Spice, Lemongrass and Lime and Vanilla Bean, which is why this plan buys two 100 g bottles rather than four 50 g.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The 500 g packs would be a bigger sale for us, and for Honeydew Melon the saving is real. But the saving only counts if you use the oil. At 16 g a candle, a 500 g Honeydew Melon is 31 candles. If it sells four, the "cheaper" pack has cost you ₹1,481.70 in oil you cannot use, against ₹592.17 for 200 g. Buy the 500 g when Honeydew Melon has sold its first twelve, not before.

Fruity · strongest 500 g break of the five
Honeydew Melon Fragrance Oil
₹4.35 a gram at 100 g, ₹3.40 at 500 g and 1 kg. That 22.0% step makes it the first scent in this launch to move to 500 g — once it proves it sells. It is also the cheapest of the five per candle.

Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil
Priced at ₹5.90 a gram at both 100 g and 500 g, so there is no price reason to buy 500 g at all. Its 50 g is dearer per gram (₹6.61), and its 1 kg is the only real saving, 10.0%. Buy it in 100 g bottles until it is selling steadily enough to justify the kilo.

Gourmand · dearest of the five
Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
The most expensive scent in this launch at ₹7.90 a gram at 100 g, which is why it sets the worst case in every strategy. At 500 g it saves only 2.8%. Keep it at 200 g until it earns more; it has the most money to lose if it sits.

The ₹20,000 plan

Here is the whole launch on the even strategy. It assumes you already own the buy-once tools (a scale, thermometer, jug, stirring sticks and wick centering devices, ₹1,475.00 at CSI's prices; the ₹10,000 plan lists them). If you do not, take ₹1,475.00 out of the reserve and it drops to ₹406.82 — at which point the honest move is to launch four scents, not five.

₹20,000 · five scents · CSI prices, September 2026

CSI 464 wax 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg = 13 kg (need 11,965 g + 5% = 12,563 g) ₹6,596.20 33.0%

Wick stickers 2 × 40 = 80 ₹200.00 1.0%
Reserve First oil reorder ₹1,881.82 9.4%

Fragrance, testers included, is 31.5% of the budget. Wax and jars together are 56.0%, because every one of the 60 candles needs 184 g of wax and a jar regardless of scent. Each 200 g of oil leaves 8 g after twelve candles, about 4%, which covers pour loss within the 3–5% working assumption used across this series. Wax is CSI 464, ₹507.40 a kilo at every pack size and rated up to 10% fragrance by the wax maker; the 8% load used here sits inside that formulation ceiling.

200 g candle · 8% · CSI 464 · White Matte jar · Eco Thin C1 · oil at 100 g rate
Material cost per candle, by scent
Scent Oil per candle Material cost
Honeydew Melon ₹69.67 ₹239.73

Pumpkin Spice ₹94.40 ₹264.46
Lemongrass and Lime ₹94.40 ₹264.46
Vanilla Bean ₹126.40 ₹296.46

The five candles span ₹239.73 to ₹296.46 in materials, a gap of ₹56.73. If you sell all five at one price, Vanilla Bean earns the least per candle. That is fine for a launch, but it is one more reason not to buy extra Vanilla Bean before it proves itself. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Checking the margin on a ₹499 candle takes this further.

Betting on two

It is reasonable to have a hunch. It is expensive to fund it before the market agrees.

Launching in late September, it is tempting to buy more of the autumn and festive scents. Fallen Leaves and Pumpkin Spice fit Diwali gifting, and that reasoning is sound as far as it goes. But it is reasoning, not data; we have no sales figures that say which scent will lead for you. The table shows what the bet costs. It gives the two festive scents 300 g each and the other three 150 g.

Bet on two · CSI prices, September 2026
300 g on the favourites, 150 g on the rest
Scent Oil bought Cost Candles If this scent is slow, stuck
Fallen Leaves 300 g ₹1,416.00 18 ₹1,416.00
Pumpkin Spice 300 g ₹1,770.00 18 ₹1,770.00
Honeydew Melon 150 g ₹652.54 9 ₹652.54
Lemongrass and Lime 150 g ₹920.00 9 ₹920.00
Vanilla Bean 150 g ₹1,200.00 9 ₹1,200.00
Total 1,050 g ₹5,958.54 63 Worst two: ₹3,186.00

If the bet is right, you have 18 candles of each festive scent and no reorder delay in the busiest fortnight. If it is wrong, ₹3,186.00 is stuck in two scents, against ₹2,760.00 on the even plan, and the other three scents run out at nine candles. The even plan with a reserve handles both cases: if the festive scents lead, the reserve buys their reorder within days. How early to stock up before Diwali covers the seasonal timing in detail.

Spending the reserve

The ₹1,881.82 reserve is the part of the plan that actually backs a winner. Decide in advance how you will spend it, so that the first week of sales does not make the decision for you.

1
Wait until one scent has sold at least 9 of its 12That is the signal, written down before launch. A scent at 9 of 12 while the others sit at 4 or 5 is a leader; five scents all at 6 is a slow launch, not a leader.
2
Reorder the leader in the size that is cheapest per gramFor Honeydew Melon that is the 500 g (₹1,699.20, ₹3.40 a gram). For Pumpkin Spice it is still the 100 g, because 500 g is no cheaper. For Vanilla Bean, two more 100 g bottles (₹1,580.00).
3
Add wax and jars only for the reorderThey are shared, so buy them for the total number of candles you are about to pour, not per scent.
4
Leave slow scents alone until they sell throughDo not reorder a scent that still has candles on the shelf. Its remaining oil and candles are the cost of having tested it; do not add to them.
5
Replace, do not add, a scent that never movesIf one scent is still at 3 or 4 after the others have been reordered twice, drop it and test a new 15 g. The range stays at five; the risk stays small.
The CSI principle
Buy fragrance for the candles you will sell, not for the price you might save.
Per-gram savings are real for some oils and absent for many. Stuck oil is always a loss. For a five-scent launch, even quantities with money held back beat any bet on which scent will lead.
The false economy of 50 g. Buying 50 g of each scent to keep the risk down makes three candles per scent, and for three of these five oils it also costs more per gram than 100 g. You would pay more for oil and learn almost nothing. Whether to cut the number of scents or buy smaller quantities works through when smaller packs make sense and when they do not.

Once the leaders are clear, the purchasing changes from even to weighted, and eventually to kilos for the one or two scents that carry the range. Which materials to buy in bulk and which in trial sizes, the ₹1 lakh tranche method and adjusting quantities once most sales come from a few scents each take one step further along that path. If your budget is larger, the ₹50,000 premium split and the order to buy everything in show where the extra money should go.

The cheapest bottle is the one you do not have to throw away.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to recommend 500 g of every scent. This page recommends 200 g, shows that Pumpkin Spice's 500 g is no cheaper per gram than its 100 g, and says plainly that even Honeydew Melon's real saving is not worth taking until the scent has sold.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco wicks and White Matte jars are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026; wick stickers and the 20-wick pack come from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Strategy costs, worst cases and per-candle figures are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

The 12-candle sample size, the "9 of 12" reorder signal, the 5% wax allowance and the assumption that tools are already owned are working assumptions. Festive-season reasoning is reasoning, not sales data; we publish no sales figures by scent. Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil do I need to launch a candle scent?
Enough for the number of candles you need to sell before you trust the result. At 16 g per 200 g candle, 12 candles need 192 g, so buy 200 g as two 100 g bottles. For five scents at CSI's prices in this plan that is ₹5,754.84.
Is it cheaper to buy fragrance oil in 500 g packs?
Sometimes. Honeydew Melon is 22.0% cheaper per gram at 500 g, Lemongrass and Lime 11.9%, Fallen Leaves 10.0%. Pumpkin Spice costs the same at 100 g and 500 g. Check each oil before assuming a saving.
How many fragrances should I start my candle business with?
Five is manageable on ₹20,000 if each gets 200 g and you already own the tools. If you still need to buy tools, four scents keeps a proper reorder reserve.
What if one of my candle scents doesn't sell?
On the even plan it has cost you at most its 200 g, ₹870.84 to ₹1,580.00 here. Sell through what you have, do not reorder it, and replace it with a new 15 g test once the others have been reordered twice.
How much wax do I need for 60 candles?
60 × 184 g = 11,040 g at an 8% load in a 200 g candle, plus 925 g for five test candles and about 5% for pour loss. This plan buys 13 kg of CSI 464 for ₹6,596.20.
Should I buy more of festive scents before Diwali?
Only if you accept the risk. Putting 300 g on two festive scents raises the worst-case stuck oil from ₹2,760.00 to ₹3,186.00. Keeping a reserve and reordering fast when a scent leads achieves the same result with less risk.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Launch candles are 200 g at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax); test candles 200 g at 7.5%. Worst-case stuck oil assumes the two scents with the largest oil spend are the two slow sellers. The 12-candle sample, the 9-of-12 reorder signal and a 5% wax allowance are working assumptions. Per-candle material cost is wax + oil + wick + jar and excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.
