The short answer
Answer: Order 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of soy wax, 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of Lavender, 109 jars, 110 wick stickers, two small test wick packs and — after the burn test — about 104 production wicks.
Why: A 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g wax + 16 g oil. Tests, rejects, pour loss and breakage are added once each, to the materials they describe, then rounded to listed packs.
Method: Net BOM → test candles → ÷ (1 − rejects) → × (1 + pour loss) on wax and oil → ÷ (1 − breakage) on glass → cheapest in-stock packs → buy shared materials now, the wick after the test.
100 × 200 g Lavender: how the wax line grows, step by step Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · 8% load (working) · allowances are labelled working assumptions · bar length = grams Net wax 100 × 184 g 18,400.0 g + 6 test candles 106 × 184 g 19,504.0 g ÷ (1 − 3%) rejects consumables only 20,107.2 g × 1.05 pour loss wax and oil only 21,112.6 g Round to packs 4 × 5 kg + 1 kg + 500 g 21,500 g The same stack runs for every line: oil 1,600 g → 1,835.9 g → 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of Lavender (₹9,731.00); jars 100 → 106 → ÷ (1 − 2%) breakage = 109; wicks 100 → 110 with tests and rejects. Pour loss never touches jars; breakage never touches wax. Rounding is always the last step, never the first.
How the wax line grows from the net 18,400 g to 21,500 g of bags. Each step is one named allowance applied once; rounding to listed packs comes last. The 3% reject, 5% pour-loss and 2% breakage figures are labelled working assumptions — use your own records where you have them.
Straight answer
I want to make 100 × 200 g Lavender soy candles in 8 cm glass jars — exactly how much soy wax, Lavender fragrance oil, wicks and extra material should I order?
Order 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of soy wax (21.11 kg needed), 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of Lavender (1,835.9 g needed), 109 jars, 110 stickers and 110 wicks — six for testing now, 104 for production after the test. At an 8% working load each 200 g candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil, so 100 candles are 18.4 kg and 1.6 kg net. On top of that this page adds six wick-test candles, a 3% reject allowance on consumables, 5% pour loss on wax and oil only, and 2% breakage on glass only — labelled assumptions you can replace. Priced in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Lavender Fragrance Oil, with White Matte jars as the candidate for your 8 cm jar and Eco Thin C1 as the wick, the CSI order is ₹31,440.40. CSI publishes no jar diameters and no wick-per-diameter chart, so weigh one test pour and burn-test two wicks before buying production wicks.
One line: split the candle into wax and oil first, add each allowance once, round to real packs last, and buy the wick after the burn test.
For 100 candles of 200 g Lavender at an 8% load, with six wick-test candles, a 3% reject allowance, 5% pour loss and 2% jar breakage, the CSI order is 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹12,878.00), 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of Lavender Fragrance Oil (₹9,731.00), 109 jars, two small test packs of wicks and the production wick after the test — ₹31,440.40 in all if Eco Thin C1 wins.

The exact order, on one screen

One hundred 200 g candles hold 18.4 kg of wax, not 20 kg. The other 1.6 kg is lavender.

Start from what the customer receives: a 200 g candle, wax and fragrance together. CSI writes fragrance load as a share of that finished weight, so at the 8% working load used here each candle is 16 g of Lavender and 184 g of wax. One hundred of them are 1,600 g of oil and 18,400 g of wax — the net bill of materials before a single allowance. Everything you order beyond that is cover for something specific: test candles, rejects, wax left in the jug, and glass that breaks. This page adds each one in a fixed order, names the figure it uses, and then rounds every line to a pack CSI actually lists in stock today.

CSI total (Thick C2 wins) ₹31,853.40
CSI total if you buy your own 8 cm jars ₹23,652.40 jars on your own quote

That is ₹314.40 of CSI materials per saleable candle when the White Matte jar is used and Eco Thin C1 wins the wick test. It excludes labour, lids, labels, boxes, freight and GST. The White Matte jar is a candidate for your 8 cm jar, not a confirmed match: CSI does not publish its internal diameter or fill weight, so the section on your 8 cm jar shows how to settle it with one weighed test pour before you commit to 109 pieces.

Two numbers in the table matter more than the rest. The wax is 21.5 kg of bags for a 21.11 kg need — 387 g spare, roughly two candles' worth, and that is as tight as CSI's listed packs allow. The lavender is 1.85 kg for a 1.84 kg need — 14 g spare. Both are tight because every allowance was named and sized, not because anything was shaved. If you want more cover than that, raise one named allowance; do not add a vague "10% extra" on top, because that applies the same cushion twice. Whether to plan for 105 or 110 pieces is its own question in this cluster.

The bill of materials for one candle

A bill of materials (BOM) is the recipe for one finished unit, written as quantities you can buy. For a single-wick container candle it has six lines, and the first two come from one multiplication. Write it once, check it against a weighed candle, and every order after this one is the same table multiplied by a different number.

One saleable candle · CSI convention: load = share of finished weight · per-unit prices at the packs bought above
BOM — 200 g Lavender soy candle, single wick
Line Quantity per candle How it is worked out Material cost
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 184 g 200 g × (1 − 0.08) ₹110.21
Lavender Fragrance Oil 16 g 200 g × 0.08 ₹84.16
Wick (Eco Thin C1 shown) 1 Single wick; the size is decided by your burn test ₹5.90
Wick sticker 1 One per wick; sheets of 40 ₹2.50
Jar (White Matte candidate) 1 Your 8 cm jar, or a CSI candidate after a test pour ₹70.80
Lid, label, box 1 each Not CSI items — your own quotes Your quote
CSI materials per candle Before any allowance ₹273.57

Wax and oil are priced at the average rate of the packs actually bought for this order: ₹598.98 a kilo for the Chunks and ₹5.26 a gram for the lavender mix of 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g. The oil, at ₹84.16, costs nearly as much as the wax at ₹110.21 even though it is less than a tenth of the weight. That is normal for a scented candle and it is why the oil line deserves the most careful rounding.

The mistake: "100 candles × 200 g = 20 kg of wax, plus the fragrance." That orders 20.00 kg of wax for candles that can only hold 18.40 kg, a surplus of 1,600 g (8.7% too much), and if you then pour 200 g of wax per jar with 16 g of oil on top, every candle weighs 216 g, sits higher in your 8 cm jar than you designed, and carries a true load of 7.41% rather than 8%. Fix: split the finished weight first — oil = W × L, wax = W × (1 − L) — and only then add allowances. The wax-weight-per-candle post and the 300 g luxury post go through this split in detail; the 10% oud post shows how the same mistake can push a formula past a wax's published ceiling.

The allowance stack, in the order it is applied

Every allowance covers one specific loss. Apply each one once, to the materials it describes, in a fixed order.

This is the step most shopping lists get wrong — not because the percentages are wrong, but because they are applied to the wrong things, or twice. Test candles are whole candles, so they come first and are counted like production candles. Rejects mean a candle has to be remade, so the wax, oil, wick and sticker inside it are lost; on this page the jar is cleaned and reused, and a jar that cannot be reused is breakage. Pour loss is wax and oil left in the jug and on the stirrer, so it applies only to wax and oil. Breakage is a glass problem, so it applies only to jars. Rounding to packs is last, because every earlier step works in grams and pieces, not bags.

1
Write the net BOM and multiply100 candles × 184 g wax = 18,400 g; × 16 g oil = 1,600 g; 100 wicks, 100 stickers, 100 jars. This is the figure the customer pays for.
2
Add the test candles as candlesSix test candles — three each on two wick options — use exactly the same formula and the same 8 cm jar as production. 106 candle-equivalents: 19,504 g wax and 1,696 g oil. If your wick is already proven in this jar with this wax and oil, drop them.
3
Divide consumables by (1 − reject rate)With a 3% example reject rate you need 109.28 candles' worth of wax, oil, wicks and stickers to end with 106 good ones. Dividing, rather than adding 3%, is the honest version: 3% of what you pour is lost, so the pour must be bigger than the good output by 1 ÷ 0.97.
4
Multiply wax and oil by (1 + pour loss)Wax that stays in the jug, drips and the film on the stirrer: 5% is a labelled working figure (3–5% is common). Wax becomes 21,112.6 g; oil becomes 1,835.9 g. Jars and wicks do not evaporate, so they skip this step.
5
Divide jars by (1 − breakage)A 2% example breakage figure on glass: 106 ÷ 0.98 = 108.16, rounded up to 109. Use your own figure from past deliveries if you have one.
6
Round each line up to listed, in-stock packsChoose the cheapest combination of listed sizes that covers each need, then write down what is left over and what it is worth. That is the next section.
Use your own numbers where you have them
If your last three batches lost 2% in the jug, use 2%, not 5%: the wax line drops to 20,509.4 g and the oil to 1,783.4 g. If you have never had a jar arrive broken, keep a small breakage figure anyway for jars chipped on the bench. The burn-test budget post sizes the test-candle step for different situations, and the 180 g jasmine post argues the case for and against keeping extra stock beyond these allowances.

Your 8 cm jar: what CSI can and cannot tell you

An 8 cm jar is your container, and its diameter is your figure. CSI does not publish internal diameters for any of its jars, and of everything in the catalogue only two fills are published: the Golden Aluminium Tin at 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at 50 g of wax. So there are two honest routes. Buy your own 8 cm jars from the supplier you already use and leave the jar out of the CSI order; or try a CSI jar as a candidate, and settle its fill with a weighed test pour before you buy production quantities.

Jars re-checked 4 October 2026 · fill weights not published unless stated · brim figures are approximate
Jar candidates for a 200 g fill

White Matte Glass Jar ₹354.00 / 5 · ₹708.00 / 10 Price; diameter and fill not published Unknown — weigh a test pour Candidate · 109 jars = ₹7,788.00
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar ₹200.60 / 5 · ₹2,950.00 / 100 200 ml brim volume, golden lug cap Unlikely: 200 ml ≈ 172 g–180 g of wax at the brim Only if you accept a smaller fill
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml ₹47.20 each 130 ml brim volume, clear cap No — too small for 200 g Fits the 100 g wedding-favour post
Golden Aluminium Tin ₹360.00 / 12 85 g fill No Different product

The Salsa row deserves a sentence because it is the obvious mistake. "200 ml" is the volume of the jar to the brim, not a fill weight. Solid soy wax is lighter than water; using a labelled approximate range of 0.86–0.90 g per ml, 200 ml of wax weighs about 172 g–180 g at the brim, and a candle is never filled to the brim. A 200 g candle will not fit. The Salsa jar can still be the right jar for a smaller candle — the 150 g coffee post uses it — but not for this order.

1
Buy one pack of the candidate jarOne pack of five White Matte jars (₹354.00) is enough to settle the fill and also gives you jars for the wick test.
2
Weigh the empty jar, then fill to your lineMark the fill line you want — most makers leave a gap below the rim for the flame and the lid. Pour melted wax to that line, let it set, and weigh again. The difference is your real fill.
3
Decide the candle weight from the jar, not the other way roundIf the jar holds 200 g to your line, the BOM on this page stands. If it holds 185 g, rewrite the BOM at 185 g (14.8 g oil, 170.2 g wax at 8%) and rerun the order — the method does not change, only W.
4
Measure the inside diameter yourselfCalipers or a ruler across the inside of the mouth. Write it on your BOM. It is your figure for wick testing, because CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart.
The assumption: "an 8 cm jar takes a 200 g candle." Diameter alone does not give a fill: height, wall thickness, base thickness and shoulder all change it. Fix: weigh one test pour to your fill line before the order is final. If you are using your own jars, do it with one of them; if you are trying a CSI jar, do it with the first pack of five. Five minutes with a scale settles what no product listing can.

Rounding to real CSI packs, and what is left over

Pack rounding is where a correct calculation can still become an expensive order. The rule is simple — the cheapest combination of listed, in-stock packs that covers each need — but the cheapest combination is not always the obvious one, so compute it. Here is each line for this order, with the leftover and what that leftover is worth at the price you paid.

White Matte jars 109 11 × pack of 10 110 1 ₹70.80
Test wicks 3 + 3 20 Thin + 10 Thick 30 24 ₹166.38

Three pack quirks decide this order, and each one is worth knowing for every order after it. Chunks: the 500 g bag is ₹299.00, which is ₹598.00 a kilo — a rupee cheaper than the 1 kg and 5 kg bags at ₹599.00, and ₹1.90 cheaper than the 10 kg bag at ₹599.90 a kilo. Strictly, 43 bags of 500 g would be the cheapest way to buy 21.5 kg (₹12,857.00), but nobody wants to open 43 bags for ₹21.00; four 5 kg bags plus a 1 kg and a 500 g are the practical cheapest. Never buy two 10 kg bags here: they cost ₹18.00 more than four 5 kg bags for the same 20 kg. Lavender: its 100 g is ₹5.40 a gram, 500 g ₹5.24 and 1 kg ₹5.22 — a small but real step — while 50 g is the same ₹5.40 as 100 g, so a 50 g bottle is the cheapest way to cover the last few grams. Two 1 kg bottles would cost ₹10,442.00 and leave 164 g unused. Wicks: the Eco Thin C1 10-pack is out of stock on the 4 October re-check, so the smallest Thin pack is 20.

Natural Soy Pearl Wax None published 2 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg ₹9,396.00 ₹427.09

Every one of the four sits comfortably above an 8% working load where a ceiling is published, so the choice is not forced by the formula. It is a price and preference decision that only your own test candles can settle — CSI publishes no throw, frosting or adhesion data for any of them. If you have not chosen yet, the Bergamot Amber post builds the testing stage into the shopping list from the start, and the 50-candle vanilla post runs the same order in CSI 464.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. You do not need the bigger packs to get a better price on this order. Chunks are not cheaper per kilo in a 10 kg bag (they are dearer), so buy 5 kg bags. Lavender gets 3.3% cheaper per gram from 100 g to 1 kg — about ₹179.00 on a full kilo — so the 1 kg bottle is worth it here because you need 1.84 kg anyway, not because it is a deal. And if your own jars are already on the shelf, leave the ₹7,788.00 of White Matte jars out: they are the biggest single line in this order after wax and oil.

The priced shopping list

One order, several CSI products, one subtotal — and the non-CSI lines kept outside it.

This is the list to take to the store. CSI lines are priced from the live listing; non-CSI lines are examples you replace with your own quotes and are deliberately left out of the CSI subtotal, so the figure you compare against your budget is the figure you will actually pay CSI.

Tools are not in the subtotal because most makers already own them. Notice that the wax changes much less than the oil when the load moves, because the finished weight is fixed: every gram of extra oil is a gram less wax. That is the whole point of writing load as a share of the finished candle. 6% versus 8% and 10% versus 8% work through the purchasing difference in full.

What to buy now, and what to buy after the wick test

Not everything on the list should be bought on the same day. The rule this series uses: materials that every option shares can be bought early; the production quantity of anything that a test might change is bought after the test passes. On this order the wax, the lavender, the stickers and the jars are shared — whichever wick wins, you need them. The wick is not. CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart, so the wick for your 8 cm jar is decided by burning, and buying 100 of the wrong wick is the one avoidable waste on this list.

Working practice: 3 candles per wick option · burn cycles of about 3–4 hours with full cool-down · one candle per option to the end
The wick test in your 8 cm jar
Option Candles Wicks bought What you record Pass looks like
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 3 1 × 20 (₹118.00) Time to full melt pool, pool depth, flame height, soot, jar-side feel Full pool within your normal burn, no worse than your safety baseline
Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 3 1 × 10 (₹94.40) Same lines, same room, same cure age As above — and no hotter jar, taller flame or soot than Thin C1
Cotton Braided (optional third) 3 1 × 10 (₹120.00) Only if neither Eco wick passes Adds 3 candles to the test step

If you would rather hold back everything until the wick passes, the test stage on its own costs ₹2,563.42: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Chunks, 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g of lavender, one pack of 10 White Matte jars (or six of your own), the two test wick packs and one sticker sheet. The only reason to split the order that way is cash or uncertainty about the oil; on price alone the split costs you a little, because the 15 g and 100 g lavender bottles bought for testing are dearer per gram than the 500 g and 1 kg bottles in the full order. The wick-sample post covers how many wick options are worth testing, and the first-100-candles post applies the same now/later split to a first production run.

The CSI principle
Shared materials early, the deciding material after the test.
Wax, oil and jars do not change whichever wick wins. The production wick does — so it waits for the burn.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. A wick test poured this week can be cured and burned with time left to pour 100 candles before the festive peak. Send us your candle weight, jar diameter, oil and count on WhatsApp and we will check the order against current stock — listed packs only, larger quantities by quote, and no volume discount figure is published.

Which question in this series is yours

This page is the hub for the whole "exact candle BOM and shopping list" series, and for its first cluster: production shopping lists for 50 to 100 candles. Every post uses the same BOM convention, the same allowance order and the same rule about rounding to real CSI packs; each one starts from a different question. Find yours below.

Four more clusters start from a different pressure. The 500-piece wedding order scales the same method to large confirmed orders of 500–1,000 candles. The ₹10,000 start-up budget turns a fixed budget into a balanced first inventory. The 200 g luxury lavender candle in frosted glass starts from a product idea and builds its development BOM. Converting a finalised formula into a 30-day purchase order handles monthly, multi-SKU reordering.

Split the candle first, add each allowance once, round last — and buy the deciding material after the test.

Not Lavender, or not 200 g? Change two inputs — W and the oil — and the method stays the same. The full oil range is in Fragrance Oils; CSI's container soy waxes are in Candle Wax; wicks are in Candle Wicks and jars in Glass Jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's shopping list has an obvious bias: round everything up to the biggest pack. This one rounds to the cheapest listed combination, shows the leftover and its value, tells you when a bigger pack is dearer per kilo, and leaves the jar out entirely if you already have your own.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Wick, sticker and jar prices and stock are re-checked 4 October 2026 — including the Eco Thin C1 10-pack being out of stock. Every split, allowance, pack combination and leftover value on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it.

The 8% load, six test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss and 2% breakage are labelled working assumptions, not standards. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the 85 g tin and 50 g velvet jar), no wick-size-per-diameter chart and no burn-test data — so the jar fill is settled by a weighed test pour and the wick by your own burn test. Frequently asked questions

How much soy wax do I need for 100 candles of 200 g?
At an 8% fragrance load, 18.40 kg net — not 20 kg, because 1.6 kg of the finished weight is oil. With six test candles, 3% rejects and 5% pour loss it is 21.11 kg, which rounds to 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Chunks.
How much fragrance oil for 100 candles at 8%?
1,600 g net (16 g per 200 g candle). With the same allowances, 1,835.9 g; for Lavender that is 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g at ₹9,731.00.
How many extra wicks should I buy for 100 candles?
Count test candles as candles and add a reject allowance: 110 in total here. Buy small packs of two or three wick options for the test, then the production pack of the winner — about 104 wicks, partly covered by the test leftovers.
Will a 200 ml jar hold a 200 g candle?
Usually not. 200 ml is a brim volume; at an approximate 0.86–0.90 g of wax per ml it holds about 172 g–180 g of wax to the brim, and you never fill to the brim. Weigh a test pour.
What wick size do I need for an 8 cm candle jar?
CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart, and diameter is only one input — wax, oil, load and jar shape matter too. Burn-test two or three options in your own jar, three candles each, and buy the production wick after one passes.
Should I add 10% extra to my candle material order?
Only if you know what the 10% is for. Name each allowance — tests, rejects, pour loss, breakage — and apply it once to the materials it describes. A blanket 10% on top of those double-counts and usually over-buys oil, the dearest line.

Non-price figures and assumptions: BOM convention used on every page in this series: load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Allowances are applied in one order — whole test candles, then a reject allowance (÷ (1 − reject rate)) on wax, oil, wicks and stickers, then pour loss on wax and oil only, then breakage on glass only, then rounding up to listed in-stock CSI packs. A rejected candle is assumed to be remade with new wax, oil, wick and sticker in a cleaned jar; a jar that cannot be reused counts as breakage. Working figures on this page: 8% load (the title gives none), 6 test candles (2 wick options × 3), 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% jar breakage. Volume is not weight: a jar's ml figure is its brim volume. Solid soy wax is lighter than water; ~0.86–0.90 g per ml is a labelled approximate working range that varies by wax, temperature and fill line, never a CSI specification. The 200 ml Salsa brim range (172 g–180 g) uses that approximate range. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. CSI publishes no throw, burn-test, wick-size-per-diameter or jar-diameter data; only two fills are published (Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g, Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g wax capacity). Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
