I Want to Make 500 Wax-Melt Clamshells — How Much Wax and Fragrance Should I Buy Based on the Fill Weight of Each Pack?
Aktie
How much fragrance oil for 500 clamshells? At 72 g and 10%, 3,600 g in total, or 900 g per fragrance across four. With a 5% allowance, one 1 kg pack of each oil.
Does CSI state the clamshell fill weight? No. Fill three clamshells to your working level, weigh each against a zeroed empty one, and use the average.
What does each clamshell cost? At the example 72 g in CSI 468 with Lavender, ₹108.37 in wax, oil and clamshell, before labels and packaging.
Start by weighing your clamshell, not by guessing it
CSI sells its Wax Melts Containers in Heart and Square shapes, but the product page does not give a fill weight per cavity or per clamshell. That figure drives the whole order: wax, oil, melter batches, even how many spare clamshells you need. Get it wrong by 10 g and a 500-pack order is out by 5 kg of melt.
So the first job costs nothing but ten minutes. Take three empty clamshells of the shape you will sell. Place one on your scale and zero it. Fill every cavity with melted wax to the level you want customers to see, usually just below the rim so the lid closes flat. Let it set and weigh it. Repeat for the other two and take the average. That average, not a figure from anyone else’s blog, is your fill weight.
For the rest of this page, the worked example uses 72 g per clamshell. That is an example figure only. Replace it with your own average before you order anything.
The arithmetic for 500 packs
Fix the load before the quantities. This example uses CSI 468 at a suggested 10% of total weight, which is 10 ÷ 90 = 11.1% of wax weight, inside the 13% CSI states for 468. Where an oil page states a wax-melt range such as 10–15%, that is the page’s stated range; the wax maker’s maximum still applies, and the lower figure wins.
Because no 25 kg or larger pack is listed on CSI waxes, 35 kg is built from the 10 kg and 5 kg packs, and anything larger is quoted on WhatsApp.
| Your fill weight | Wax needed | Wax packs to buy | Oil needed in total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 g | 28,350 g | 3 × 10 kg | 3,150 g |
| 72 g (example) | 34,020 g | 3 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg | 3,780 g |
| 85 g | 40,162.5 g | 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg | 4,462.5 g |
The difference between a 60 g and an 85 g clamshell is about 12 kg of wax and more than a kilogram of oil across the order. That is why this page asks you to weigh before you buy.
The production order, costed at live CSI prices
For the 72 g example, with four oils chosen to give a lavender, an amber, an aquatic and a citrus in the range:
| Item | Packs | Working | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 468 coconut soy | 3 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg | 3 × ₹6,370.00 + ₹3,185.00 | ₹22,295.00 |
| Lavender | 1 kg | ₹5,221.00 | |
| Bergamot Amber | 1 kg | ₹5,437.00 | |
| Blue Ocean | 1 kg | ₹4,956.00 | |
| Citrus Lemon | 1 kg | ₹2,832.00 | |
| Wax melt clamshells | 5 × 100 + 1 × 50 | 5 × ₹2,950.00 + ₹1,475.00 | ₹16,225.00 |
| Total | 22,295 + 18,446 + 16,225 | ₹56,966.00 |
The four oils total 5,221 + 5,437 + 4,956 + 2,832 = ₹18,446.00. The 550 clamshells give a 50-pack margin for cracked lids and failed pours. Labels, outer packaging, labour, shipping and GST are not in these figures.
Per clamshell, using Lavender as the example oil: wax 64.8 g × (₹6,370.00 ÷ 10,000 g = ₹0.637) = ₹41.28, oil 7.2 g × (₹5,221.00 ÷ 1,000 g = ₹5.221) = ₹37.59, and the clamshell at ₹2,950.00 ÷ 100 = ₹29.50. That is ₹41.28 + ₹37.59 + ₹29.50 = ₹108.37 before packaging. Bergamot Amber packs cost slightly more and Citrus Lemon packs noticeably less, so price each fragrance separately if you plan to sell them at one price.
Melting it in batches
Each fragrance needs 8,100 g of wax plus 900 g of oil, so 9 kg of melt. The 10 kg Electric Wax Melter page states it melts 9.5 litres at a time, but litres and kilograms are not the same thing for wax, so do not fill to the brim on the strength of that figure. Splitting each fragrance into two batches of about 4.5 kg is a suggested, safer working size, and it keeps oil additions small enough to weigh accurately. The page also states a ±10°C display deviation, so check the wax with a separate thermometer, add oil below its published flashpoint, and never run the melter at its maximum setting with oil going in. Watch the electrical load on your circuit and wear gloves when draining hot wax.
Plan the bench space as well as the wax. Eight batches of about 4.5 kg each fill roughly 62 clamshells per batch at 72 g, since 4,500 ÷ 72 = 62.5. Those clamshells need somewhere flat and undisturbed to set before lidding, and somewhere cool to cure for at least the 48–72 h CSI states for soy. If you can lay out only 150 open clamshells at once, that, not the melter, sets how many batches you can pour in a day.
Run a 20-pack pilot before the 500
Do not buy 35 kg of wax and four kilograms of oil on a recipe you have never seen in a clamshell. A pilot of five packs per fragrance confirms the fill weight, the release from the clamshell and the scent in a warmer.
| Item | Pack | Price |
|---|---|---|
| CSI 468 coconut soy | 1 kg + 500 g | ₹650.00 + ₹325.00 |
| Lavender | 50 g | ₹270.00 |
| Bergamot Amber | 50 g | ₹280.00 |
| Blue Ocean | 50 g | ₹247.00 |
| Citrus Lemon | 50 g | ₹170.00 |
| Wax melt clamshells | 2 × 10 | 2 × ₹295.00 |
| Total | ₹2,532.00 |
Working: wax 650 + 325 = ₹975.00; oils 270 + 280 + 247 + 170 = ₹967.00; clamshells 2 × 295 = ₹590.00; total 975 + 967 + 590 = ₹2,532.00. Twenty packs need 20 × 64.8 = 1,296 g of wax and 5 × 7.2 = 36 g of each oil, so every pack covers its share with a small margin.

Weigh three clamshells first. Then the pilot: 1.5 kg of CSI 468, 50 g of each of the four oils and 20 clamshells, for ₹2,532.00. Cure for at least the 48–72 h CSI states for soy before warmer testing.
Buy this once validated
Three 10 kg packs and one 5 kg pack of CSI 468, one 1 kg pack of each approved oil, and 550 clamshells, for ₹56,966.00 on the 72 g example. If your weighed fill differs, recalculate with the table above before ordering, and ask CSI on WhatsApp for a quote if your total wax goes well past 35 kg.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
