Quick answers — read this first
How much black dye should I add? No CSI dye page answers that, and neither does this one. Zero of the 17 dye listings states a dose — not a percentage, not grams per kilo, not drops. What you get here is a method: a six-step ladder from 0.05 to 1.60 ml of liquid dye per 100 g of wax, priced, with a wick retest attached to whichever step you choose.Which black dye? Candle Dye Liquid | Black at ₹472 for 50 ml — ₹9.44 per ml, because liquid is the only form you can dose in small increments. CSI lists a second black liquid at ₹590 for 50 ml (₹11.80/ml) and Black Candle Dye Chips at ₹236 for a pack with no stated weight, which means no per-gram cost can be calculated.
Will soy go properly black? Not according to CSI's own page. The black liquid dye page states: "Black dye in soy wax tends to produce lighter to medium shades of black. This is because soy wax is naturally opaque", while paraffin "allows for more vibrant color payoff". A deep black in 100% soy is working against the published behaviour of the material.
The cheapest matte black there is: a Black Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and no colourant in the wax at all. Zero dye cost, zero wick disturbance, and the customer sees a matte black candle.
The short answer
Ask what has to be black: the object or the wax. If it is the object, a matte black jar does the whole job for ₹70.80 and leaves your wick test intact. Colourant is the last decision in the sequence precisely because it is the easiest one to delete.
If the wax must be dark, buy liquid, not chips: liquid can be dosed in fractions of a millilitre and adjusted between test melts. A chip pack with no stated weight can only be halved by eye.
Build the ladder in 100 g melts, not in jars: six 100 g melts use 600 g of wax and about 3.15 ml of dye in total. You read the colour in a thin-poured chip, and only the one or two doses that look right get promoted to a full jar and a burn test.

Which black candle dye should I use, and how much is too much?
Use Candle Dye Liquid | Black — ₹236 for 15 ml or ₹472 for 50 ml, which is ₹15.73 against ₹9.44 per millilitre — because liquid is the only black form in the range you can add in fractions and adjust between melts. The Black Candle Dye Chips at ₹236 are a single pack with no stated weight, so you cannot compute a dose, a per-gram price or a repeatable recipe from them until you weigh the pack yourself. As for how much: no CSI dye page states a dose, so anyone who gives you a number is guessing on your behalf. Build the ladder instead — six 100 g melts at 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, 0.80 and 1.60 ml per 100 g of wax, which consumes 600 g of wax and about 3.15 ml of dye in total, costs ₹126.36 per dose step, and gives you six colour chips to judge side by side. Then know two things the pages do tell you. The black liquid page states that in soy the dye "tends to produce lighter to medium shades of black" because soy is naturally opaque, and that paraffin gives "more vibrant color payoff" — so if you need a true deep black in the wax, a paraffin or paraffin-blend base is the honest route, and CSI states no blend ratio, which makes the ratio your test. And whichever dose you choose, the wick is now unproven: colourant is additional non-fuel material in the melt pool, so the bracket you validated on uncoloured wax — Eco Candle Wicks C1 and C2, with a wooden wick as a different type — has to be run again at the chosen dose. The cheapest matte black in this entire guide remains the Black Matte Glass Jar with nothing added to the wax.
One line: buy liquid black so you can dose it, ladder it in 100 g melts because no page states a dose, and treat every rung as a new formula that needs its wick re-proven.

Decide what actually has to be black
Half the makers who ask this question do not need dye at all. They need a black jar and the confidence to leave the wax alone.
A matte black luxury candle is a visual product, and the visual is delivered by whichever surface the customer looks at. On a 200 ml jar candle with a lid, that surface is the glass — the wax is a disc at the top and a sliver at the side. So before you cost a single millilitre of dye, separate the brief into three possible versions and price each one.

Route A is not a compromise. It is the version of this product that the series decision order actually recommends: container first, then wax, then fragrance and load, then wick, and colourant last because it is the easiest thing to change and the most likely to disturb a wick that was working. If you can satisfy the brand brief with the glass, you have removed a variable from your formula permanently — and you have removed it before you spent money proving it.
The mistake: dyeing the wax to match a jar the customer cannot see through. A Black Matte Glass Jar is opaque. Dye poured into the wax inside it is visible on roughly the top 2 mm of the candle and nowhere else — you are paying for colour, re-running a wick test, and accepting a soot and mushrooming risk to change the appearance of a disc. If the pale top is the problem, the two cheapest fixes are a lid that stays on in photography, and step 1 or 2 of the ladder below at under ₹1.53 a candle. Keep step 6 for candles poured into clear glass where the wax is the product.

Worked out above: cost per ml = variant price ÷ stated volume. Candle Dye Liquid | Black ₹236 ÷ 15 ml = ₹15.73; ₹472 ÷ 50 ml = ₹9.44. Black Candle Dye Liquid ₹590 ÷ 50 = ₹11.80; ₹1,062 ÷ 100 = ₹10.62. So the 50 ml bottle of the cheaper listing costs 40% less per millilitre than its own 15 ml bottle, and 20% less than the other listing's 50 ml. For a ladder, the 15 ml bottle is still the right buy in absolute terms — the whole six-step ladder uses about 3.15 ml.
And the colourant that is not an option here: CSI lists no black mica. Nine mica powders are stocked, and the handle that looks like a black one is titled Yellow Mica on the live store, so treat it as yellow. Mica is also a different material doing a different job — the mica pages describe it as a mineral dust that "creates a gorgeous pearly glow", say "just a sprinkle is all you need!" and claim it "won't clog your wick". Those are the pages' own words, not measurements, and no mica page gives a numeric dose either. Shimmer is not depth of colour, and a pearlescent finish is the opposite of matte. For a matte black brief, mica is the wrong tool in the wrong colour.
Weigh the chip pack before you use any of it
If you buy Black Candle Dye Chips, put the unopened pack on your scale, subtract the empty packaging afterwards, and write the net weight on the pack in marker. That single number converts an unrepeatable product into a repeatable one: you can now express a dose as grams per 100 g of wax, cost it per gram, and hand the recipe to someone else. Without it, "half a chip" is the most precise instruction you will ever be able to give.What the dye page itself says about soy versus paraffin
This is the most useful published sentence in the entire dye range and almost nobody reads it. The Candle Dye Liquid | Black page states: "Black dye in soy wax tends to produce lighter to medium shades of black. This is because soy wax is naturally opaque, which can slightly soften the color intensity. Paraffin Wax: Black dye typically achieves a wider range of color in paraffin wax, from pastel tones to darker shades. Paraffin wax is clearer than soy wax, allowing for more vibrant color payoff."
Read that as a warning about your own expectations rather than about the dye. If your reference image is a deep, saturated, ink-black wax and your wax is 100% soy or coconut-soy, you will climb the dose ladder chasing a shade the supplier has already told you the material tends not to reach — and every rung you climb costs you wick certainty. That is the specific failure mode this post exists to prevent.

Do not import a blend ratio from anywhere. A 70:30 soy-to-paraffin figure you read somewhere is not a CSI specification and does not become one by being repeated. No CSI wax page states a blend ratio with another wax, and two of the four bases above state no fragrance ceiling at all — so a blend has no published load ceiling either, and you hold it at 8% of wax weight until your own cured, burned jar says otherwise. If you go down the blend route, change one thing at a time: fix the dose from the ladder first, then move the ratio, never both in the same pour.
The six-step dose ladder, priced
Because there is no published dose, the ladder is a series you choose and record, not a recipe anyone can hand you. This one doubles at each rung, which is the right shape for a variable whose visual effect is not linear: it covers a 32-fold range in six steps and uses about 3.15 ml of dye in total. Every figure in the table is arithmetic from the live 50 ml price, applied to a 162.04 g wax charge — the wax in a 175 g fill at 8% of wax weight.

Worked out above: a 175 g fill at 8% of total wax weight is 162.04 g of wax + 12.96 g of oil (175 ÷ 1.08). Dose per candle = ml per 100 g × 1.6204. Cost = that × ₹9.44/ml (Candle Dye Liquid | Black, 50 ml ₹472). The six 100 g test melts together use 0.05 + 0.10 + 0.20 + 0.40 + 0.80 + 1.60 = 3.15 ml, which at the 15 ml price of ₹15.73/ml is ₹49.56 of dye for the entire ladder. 175 g is an illustrative fill: the Black Matte Glass Jar page states a fill weight of 200 ml, and 200 ml is not 200 g — weigh one of your own filled jars and substitute your figure.
The striking thing about that cost column is how little the money matters. Even the top rung is ₹24.47 of dye in a candle carrying ₹105.32 of wax and ₹58.74 of fragrance. Dye is not where your margin goes. What the top rung actually costs you is measured in burn tests, rejects and the risk of a candle that soots in a customer's living room — which is why the sensible instinct is to stop at the lowest rung that satisfies the design, not the highest rung you can afford. One CSI customer, Shanu Shah, writes of the liquid dyes: "Its concentrated color so a little amount gives the candle good pastel shade." Take that literally and start at step 1.
Why every dose step resets the wick to unproven
A wick does not burn wax. It burns whatever is in the melt pool — and you just put something else in there.
A candle flame is a system in balance: the wick draws liquid fuel up by capillary action at roughly the rate the flame consumes it. Change the composition of the liquid and you change the draw, the combustion and what is left behind. Fragrance oil does this, which is why load changes need wick retests. Colourant does it too, in a smaller quantity but in a form that is less completely consumed — which is the mechanism behind clogging, mushrooming and the carbon head that makers see on over-dyed candles.
Which leads to the rule that makes this the last decision in the sequence: a wick bracket proved on uncoloured wax is evidence about uncoloured wax only. You are not obliged to start the wick work from scratch — you already know which two sizes are in the running — but you are obliged to burn the chosen dose before you sell it. And CSI cannot shorten that for you, because no CSI wick page states a diameter except two: Eco Candle Wicks Loose ("designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ("large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", stated wick height 10.16 cm). The workhorse Eco Candle Wicks page states none at all.

Dark wax hides the evidence — so look at the glass, not the wax
On a pale candle you can see soot on the wax surface and discolouration around the wick. On a charcoal or black candle you cannot. Stage one is cheap and answers the colour question. Stage two is where the money is and answers the wick question, and it only runs on the one or two doses that survived stage one. Splitting them is the whole economy of this test: you do not pour a full jar, a full fragrance load and a burn test for a shade you are going to reject on sight.

Worked out above: stage 1 consumes 600 g of CSI 468 at ₹0.65/g = ₹390, six votive jars at ₹31.86 = ₹191.16 of the ₹318.60 pack, and 3.15 ml of dye at ₹15.73/ml = ₹49.56 — but because a pack is a pack, the honest stage-1 figure is the wax used plus the whole votive pack plus the dye used: ₹390 + ₹318.60 + ₹49.56 = ₹758.16, or ₹126.36 per dose step. Its page states a fill weight of 200 ml and dimensions of height 8 cm, width 7 cm — so weigh one filled jar before you cost anything, because 200 ml is a volume and your fill will be a weight. A matte black exterior delivers the whole visual at ₹70.80 a jar in the pack of ten, with no dye in the wax, no dye cost and no wick retest. It states a fragrance load of up to 13%, a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — markedly lower than the soy waxes — which matters for dye work in a practical way: your colourant has to be fully dispersed while the wax is still well above that pour window, because you have less thermal room to keep stirring than you would on a wax poured at 70–80°C. It is also one of the few CSI waxes whose listed price per kilo steps down at 5 kg and 10 kg, from ₹650 to ₹637.

The fragrance · built for dark glass
Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
The oil to pour into stage two, because its own page recommends the aesthetic you are building: it states the profile "pairs beautifully with dark glass, black" and gives a soy load of 6–10% of total wax weight with a 48–72 hour cure and 6–8% for paraffin. Against CSI 468's stated 13% that makes 10% the binding ceiling, and 8% a comfortable first test. Its page publishes no vanillin or discolouration position — one of 45 CSI oil pages in that position — which for a charcoal or black candle is simply not a live concern. One CSI customer, Payal Patel, calls it a "Good quality wood fragrance oil with a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles."

Running the ladder and the retest

Six 100 g melts, no fragrance, doses doublingWeigh 100 g of CSI 468 six times. Leave fragrance out of stage one entirely — you are isolating one variable, and adding an oil now means you cannot tell colour from fragrance-driven colour later. Add 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, 0.80 and 1.60 ml of dye respectively, well above the page's stated 58–60°C pour window, and stir each for a full two minutes.

Pour each melt two ways — thick and thinAbout 70 g into a White Matte Votive Jar to see the colour in the body, and the remaining 30 g as a flat chip on baking paper to see it in thin section. The chip matters: a dose that looks black in a jar can look grey-brown as a 2 mm layer, and the thin section is what the top 2 mm of your finished candle actually is. Number both, 1 to 6.

Two things to identify: the first rung that satisfies the design, and the rung at which further dye stops deepening the colour. Burn at day 14 and score what a dark candle hidesUp to three hours. Record minutes to a melt pool reaching the glass, flame height, wick head photographed before trimming, and a white-tissue wipe of the glass above the pool. If the tissue is grey, drop one rung on the ladder before you touch the wick — reducing colourant is cheaper and faster than re-bracketing. Dye costs a few rupees a candle and can cost you a whole wick programme. When a black candle misbehaves, drop a rung before you change anything else — it is the only variable in the formula you can reduce without redesigning the product.

Frequently asked questions
How much black candle dye should I use per kilo of wax?
No CSI dye page states a dose, and there is no honest single answer, because it depends on your wax, your vessel and how dark "black" has to look to you. What you can do is run a ladder: 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, 0.80 and 1.60 ml of liquid dye per 100 g of wax across six 100 g melts. That is 3.15 ml in total — one 15 ml bottle at ₹236 covers it three times over — and it costs about ₹126.36 per dose step in wax, vessels and dye. Then burn-test the dose you choose.
Liquid dye or dye chips for a black candle?
Liquid, for a specific and practical reason: you can dose it in fractions and repeat the dose exactly. Candle Dye Liquid | Black is ₹236 for 15 ml and ₹472 for 50 ml — ₹15.73 and ₹9.44 per millilitre. Black Candle Dye Chips are ₹236 for a pack whose weight is not stated anywhere on the page, so until you weigh it yourself you cannot express a dose, cost it per gram or hand the recipe to anyone else.
Why won't my soy candle go properly black?
Because of the material, and CSI's own dye page says so: "Black dye in soy wax tends to produce lighter to medium shades of black. This is because soy wax is naturally opaque, which can slightly soften the color intensity." The same page says paraffin is clearer and allows "more vibrant color payoff". So if a deep saturated black in the wax is non-negotiable, the route is a paraffin or paraffin-blend base — Semi Refined Paraffin at ₹220/kg, Fully Refined Pellets at ₹354/kg. No CSI page states a blend ratio, so the ratio is your own test.
Does candle dye affect how the wick burns?
Yes — it is additional material in the melt pool that the flame has to deal with, and it is less completely consumed than wax or fragrance. That is the mechanism behind clogging, mushrooming and a carbon head on over-dyed candles. Practically: a wick bracket proved on uncoloured wax is not proof at any dye dose. You do not have to start over, but you do have to burn the chosen dose in the actual jar with the actual fragrance load before you sell it. On a dark candle, inspect the glass with a white tissue rather than looking at the wax.
Can I use black mica powder instead of dye?
CSI lists no black mica. Nine mica powders are stocked and the handle that looks like a black one is titled Yellow Mica on the live store. Beyond availability, mica is the wrong material for this brief: the mica pages describe it as a mineral dust that "creates a gorgeous pearly glow", advise that "just a sprinkle is all you need!" and state it "won't clog your wick" — those are the pages' wording, not measurements, and none gives a numeric dose. A pearlescent shimmer is the opposite of a matte finish.
How much does colour add to the cost of a matte black candle?
Very little, which is why over-dosing is a technical mistake rather than a financial one. In a 175 g candle carrying ₹105.32 of CSI 468 wax and ₹58.74 of Woody Oud at 8%, the dye ranges from ₹0.76 at step 1 to ₹24.47 at step 6 of the ladder at 50 ml pricing. Materials at step 3 with a Black Matte Glass Jar, a C2 wick and a sticker come to ₹249.86. The real cost of climbing the ladder is burn tests and rejects, not rupees of colourant.

Start with the black jar and no colourant. If the wax must be dark, buy liquid, ladder it in 100 g melts, and re-prove the wick at the rung you pick.
