Pillar candles · heat rigidity
A bending pillar is usually the sum of small choices: a soft wax, a generous load, a slim shape and a hot shelf. Fix them in order.
6 properties
to rank before you choose a pillar wax for hot months
Quick answers — read this first
Why do my pillar candles bend in summer? Common causes are a wax that is too soft for free-standing use, a high fragrance load, a tall slim shape, and storage in a hot room or near a window.

Which wax property matters most? Rigidity at the temperatures your candles actually meet. Because CSI publishes no melt point for Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets, you judge it by testing, not by a number.

Is semi refined paraffin good for pillars? It is the cheapest CSI wax at ₹220.00 per kg, but its stated oil content is 6–10%, and free oil in wax generally means a softer, oilier pillar. Test it against fully refined pellets.

Will microcrystalline wax stop bending? It may help as part of your own blend; its stated range is 1–10%. No additive guarantees a pillar will not bend, so compare it in a heat test.
The short answer
Prioritise: Rigidity, low free oil, modest fragrance load, sensible height-to-width, and a wick that does not overheat the walls.
Test: Paraffin pellets, paraffin with 5% micro, Soy Pillar Wax and semi refined paraffin, as suggested starting builds.
Prove: Stand one of each upright and support one of each horizontally in your hottest room; check at 24 and 72 hours.
Raw-material cost per 300 g pillar, 4% Sandalwood, Eco C2 wickSemi refined paraffin₹133Paraffin + 5% micro₹171Soy Pillar Wax₹243
The cheapest build is the one most likely to soften; price it against the cost of a returned order, not against the other waxes.
Straight answer
I Want to Make Pillar Candles That Do Not Bend During Hot Indian Weather — Which Wax Properties Should I Prioritise?
Prioritise rigidity, low free oil and a modest fragrance load, in that order, then shape and wick. Use a wax made for free-standing candles: Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets or Soy Pillar Wax, optionally with Microcrystalline Wax Slab inside its stated 1–10% range. Be cautious with semi refined paraffin, whose stated oil content is 6–10%. Keep the load at a suggested 4% for hot months, avoid very tall slim proportions, and do not overwick, because hot walls bend while burning. CSI publishes no melt point for its pillar waxes and no wax has a guaranteed heat limit, so run a sag test in your own hottest room before buying in bulk.
One line: rank rigidity, oil content and load before anything else, then let a sag test in your hottest room choose the wax.
The Pillar Candle Mould in tall (11.2 × 6.3 cm) or short (8.6 × 6.5 cm) form, at ₹942.82, gives a standard shape for comparing pillar builds fairly.

Two different kinds of bending

A pillar that leans on the shelf and a pillar that leans while lit have different causes. Diagnose which one you have before you change the wax.

Storage bending happens when an unlit pillar softens in a warm room, a hot shop window or a parcel, and slowly leans or bows under its own weight. Tall slim pillars show it first, and it is mostly about the wax, the fragrance load and where the candle is kept.

Burning bending happens while the candle is lit. The flame heats the walls from the inside; if the wick is too strong for the diameter, the walls soften faster than the melt pool can consume them and the pillar slumps or leans, sometimes towards a draught. That one is mostly about the wick.

Indian summers make both worse, but they are separate tests. A pillar can pass the shelf and still lean when lit, or the reverse. This page ranks the wax properties for storage rigidity, then checks the wick so a rigid pillar also burns upright.

The properties to prioritise, in order

Property ranking
What matters for a pillar that holds its shape in heat
Priority Property What CSI publishes How you judge it
1 Rigidity of a free-standing wax Soy Pillar Wax is made for pillar and mould candles; paraffin pellets are listed for pillars Sag test in your hottest room
2 Free oil in the wax Semi refined paraffin: stated oil content 6–10% Oily surface, fingerprinting, softness
3 Fragrance load Oil pages state ranges, e.g. Sandalwood up to 6% for pillars Compare unscented and scented builds
4 Height-to-width proportion Mould sizes, e.g. 11.2 × 6.3 cm Tall slim shapes bend first
5 Additive in your blend Micro 1–10%, Vybar 0.5–2% (stated ranges) Same mould, with and without
6 Wick strength No wick chart or burn data Burn test: wall softening, lean

Notice what is missing from the CSI column: a melt point for Soy Pillar Wax or the paraffin pellets. CSI only publishes a melt point for CSI 468, and that is a container wax (50–53°C), not a pillar wax. Do not borrow that figure, and do not quote any temperature your pillars will survive. You can describe what you tested; you cannot promise what the weather will do.

Why oil content sits second

Paraffin is refined from oil, and less refined grades keep more of it. Semi refined paraffin's stated oil content of 6–10% is the reason it is the cheapest CSI wax at ₹220.00 per kg, and also why it is worth testing carefully: free oil generally makes a pillar feel softer and can bead on the surface in heat. Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, at ₹354.00 per kg, are the grade most makers start with for pillars.

Why proportion sits fourth

A short, broad pillar carries its own weight easily; a tall, slim one puts the same softening wax under far more leverage. If a design must survive hot shelves, a slightly wider pillar or a shorter height can achieve what no additive will. The tall 11.2 × 6.3 cm and short 8.6 × 6.5 cm Pillar Candle Moulds are a useful pair for seeing this, because the diameters are close and the heights are not.

Why the load comes before additives

Fragrance oil is liquid in the wax. A pillar carrying a high load has more liquid to soften it and more to sweat out in heat. Dropping from your usual load to a suggested 4% often does more for rigidity than adding another few per cent of micro, and it costs less.

A worked pillar build

The worked example uses CSI's tall Pillar Candle Mould (11.2 × 6.3 cm, ₹942.82) and a real wax fill of 300 g, which is the reader's own figure to weigh. A suggested 4% load of Sandalwood (page: up to 6% for paraffin and pillars) is 12 g oil, leaving 288 g wax.

In paraffin pellets with 5% micro, the 288 g of wax is 273.6 g paraffin and 14.4 g micro. Costs: 273.6 × ₹0.354 = ₹96.85; 14.4 × ₹0.299 = ₹4.31; oil 12 × ₹5.0268 = ₹60.32; Eco C2 wick ₹9.44. Total ₹96.85 + ₹4.31 + ₹60.32 + ₹9.44 = ₹170.92.

The same pillar in Soy Pillar Wax is 288 × ₹0.60 = ₹172.80 of wax, giving ₹172.80 + ₹60.32 + ₹9.44 = ₹242.56. In semi refined paraffin it is 288 × ₹0.22 = ₹63.36, giving ₹133.12. These are raw materials only, before packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

Wick candidates for 6.3 cm
For a 6.3 cm pillar, test Eco C1 (₹5.90) and Eco C2 (₹9.44). The Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are listed for diameters over 8 cm, so they are not the starting candidate here. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart; the burn test decides.

A sag test you can run at home

Pour one pillar of each build in the same mould: paraffin pellets, paraffin with 5% micro, Soy Pillar Wax, and semi refined paraffin. Pour a second set if you can, so each build has one upright and one horizontal piece.

1
Cure equally.Leave every pillar at room temperature for the same period, a suggested 48 hours, before testing.
2
Stand one upright.Place one pillar of each build upright in your hottest room, beside your own room thermometer, away from direct sun at first.
3
Support one horizontally.Lay one pillar of each across two blocks, supported only at the ends. Any softening shows as a sag in the middle long before an upright pillar leans; it exaggerates the weakness so you can compare.
4
Check at 24 and 72 hours.Measure the sag against a straight edge and note surface oil or tackiness. Record the room reading as your observation.
5
Burn the survivors.Light the best two builds with each wick candidate on a heat-safe tray, away from draughts, never unattended. Watch for softened walls and lean during the burn, and stop any test that smokes or flares.
The pillar passes the shelf but leans when lit. That is a wick or draught problem, not a wax one. Step down from Eco C2 to Eco C1, check the wick is centred, and move the test away from fans or open windows.

When you compare results, look for the gap between builds rather than an absolute pass. If paraffin with micro sags half as much as straight paraffin under the same conditions, that is a real difference worth paying ₹4.31 per pillar for. If the two sag equally, the micro is not earning its place and you can leave it out.

Every build sags in the horizontal test. Your hottest room may simply be too hot for any candle you can make. Change storage and packing, and tell buyers to keep pillars out of sun, rather than chasing an additive.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

Buy this to test: Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets 1 kg ₹354.00, Semi Refined Paraffin Wax 1 kg ₹220.00, Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹600.00, Microcrystalline Wax Slab 500 g ₹149.00, the tall Pillar Candle Mould ₹942.82, Eco C2 pack of 10 ₹94.40 and Sandalwood 15 g ₹93.22 for one scented check. Total: ₹2,453.44. Run the sag test unscented first, then pour the winning build once at 4% from the 15 g pack.

Buy this once validated: only the winning wax, and enough moulds for your production rate. Paraffin pellets are listed in 1 kg and 500 g packs; Soy Pillar Wax is ₹600.00 per kg from 500 g to 10 kg; micro comes in 500 g and 1 kg. For fifty 300 g pillars in the paraffin and micro build you need 50 × 273.6 g = 13.68 kg paraffin and 50 × 14.4 g = 720 g micro, so fourteen 1 kg paraffin packs (₹4,956.00) and one 1 kg micro slab (₹299.00), plus Sandalwood 50 × 12 g = 600 g, which means the 1 kg pack at ₹5,026.80.

Argue against interest
Cut the fragrance load before you buy an additive.
Lowering the load costs nothing and often helps more than another blend ingredient we could sell you. Try the cheaper fix first and add micro only if the sag test still fails.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wax for pillar candles in hot weather?
No wax is heat-proof. Start with Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets or Soy Pillar Wax, try a 5% microcrystalline blend, and keep whichever passes a sag test in your hottest room at the load you plan to sell.
What is the melting point of CSI Soy Pillar Wax?
CSI does not publish a melt point or hardness for Soy Pillar Wax. Judge it by pouring and testing in your own conditions, and do not quote a temperature figure to customers.
Does fragrance oil make pillar candles soft?
Fragrance oil is liquid held in the wax, so higher loads generally soften a pillar and can cause sweating in heat. A suggested 4% load for hot months is a reasonable place to start testing.
Why does my pillar candle lean when it burns?
Usually the wick is too strong for the diameter, so the walls soften faster than the pool consumes them, or a draught pushes the flame to one side. Test a gentler wick and a still spot.
Is semi refined paraffin wax good for pillar candles?
It is the cheapest CSI wax at ₹220.00 per kg, but its stated oil content is 6–10%, which generally means a softer, oilier pillar. Test it beside fully refined pellets before choosing it for summer.
How do I test if my pillar candles will bend in summer?
Stand one pillar of each build upright and support another horizontally across two blocks in your hottest room. Check for sag and surface oil at 24 and 72 hours, then burn-test the survivors.
