I Want to Make Soy Candles, Wax Melts and Mould Candles — Can I Use the Same Fragrance Oils for All Three?
Aktie
What changes between the three? The wax (container soy for jars and melts, pillar wax for moulds), the load (8% jars, 10% melts, 7% moulds in this plan) and the ceiling (Chunks up to 13%; pillar wax not published). See what differs.
How do I test one oil in all three? One 50 g bottle: 16 g for a 200 g jar, 6 g for a 60 g melt pack and 17.5 g for a 250 g pillar — 39.5 g, with 10.5 g spare. Four oils cost ₹1,301.60 at 50 g.
How much oil per month for all three? For 30 jars, 40 melt packs and 20 pillars per scent: 1,070 g per oil. Four core oils: ₹26,048.44. See the inventory.
Why the same oils work
Candle fragrance oils are formulated to be mixed into hot wax. That is equally true for a container candle, a wax melt and a moulded candle. Nothing in CSI's catalogue marks an oil as suitable for only one of them, and the oils in the Fragrance Oils collection are the same whichever product you pour. For a small business this is useful: one stock of oils, one set of scent names, and a customer who likes your Pumpkin Spice jar can buy Pumpkin Spice melts and a Pumpkin Spice pillar.
What is not the same is the wax, and the wax decides how much oil a product can carry and how the oil behaves. A container soy is soft and made to cling to glass. A pillar wax is harder and made to release from a mould. The same oil can be comfortable in one and strained in the other. That is why "can I use the same oils?" is really two questions: yes to the oil, and "test it" to the combination.
What differs by product
Here are the three products as this page plans them. The jar and melt sizes follow this series' conventions; the melt pack and pillar are illustrative, so replace them with your own weighed fills. Loads are working figures. The ceilings column is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum where one is published in our data — only Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (13%) and CSI 464 (10%) have one.
| Product | Format | Wax | Stated ceiling | Working load | Oil | Wax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jar candle | 200 g in a White Matte Glass Jar | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Up to 13% | 8% | 16 g | 184 g |
| Wax melt | 60 g pack (illustrative) in a melt container | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Up to 13% | 10% | 6 g | 54 g |
| Mould candle | 250 g pillar (illustrative) | Soy Pillar Wax | Not published — ask | 7% (test 6–10%) | 17.5 g | 232.5 g |
Why these loads? Jars at 8% is the default working load across this series, well inside the Chunks ceiling. Melts at 10% reflects the common practice of running melts higher than candles, because a melt has no flame and sells almost only scent; it stays below the 13% Chunks ceiling. Pillars at 7% is a cautious start inside a 6–10% test range, because Soy Pillar Wax has no published ceiling and moulded candles are the most structurally demanding of the three. If you use CSI 464 instead of Chunks for jars and melts, its ceiling is 10%, so your melts would sit at its maximum. For a wax melt range in depth see I'm Starting a Wax Melt Business — Which Wax, Fragrance Oils, Dyes and Moulds Do I Need?.
The three-product test
Test each oil once in each product before it joins the range. At the sizes above, one oil needs 16 g for a jar, 6 g for a melt pack and 17.5 g for a pillar — 39.5 g, which fits in a 50 g bottle with 10.5 g to spare. That is why this plan tests from 50 g rather than 15 g: a 15 g tester cannot cover a full-size pillar.
| Item | Quantity | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Four 50 g oils | Lemongrass and Lime, Pumpkin Spice, Spicy Raspberry, Neroli | ₹1,301.60 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1 kg (952 g needed for 4 jars + 4 packs) | ₹599.00 |
| Soy Pillar Wax | 1 kg (930 g needed for 4 pillars) | ₹600.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | pack of 5 | ₹354.00 |
| Wax Melts Containers | pack of 5 | ₹147.50 |
| Pillar Candle Mould | 1 | ₹942.82 |
| Eco Thin C1 + Cotton Braided wicks | 10 + 10 | ₹179.00 |
| Total | ₹4,123.92 |
What one oil costs in each product
Because the grams differ, one oil lands in each product at a different cost. The table prices the four core oils at their 1 kg rate, the size a three-product maker reaches quickly.
| Oil | Family | Per gram at 1 kg | Per 200 g jar | Per 60 g melt pack | Per 250 g pillar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lemongrass and Lime | Fresh citrus-herb | ₹5.20/g | ₹83.20 | ₹31.20 | ₹91.00 |
| Pumpkin Spice | Warm spice | ₹5.31/g | ₹84.96 | ₹31.86 | ₹92.92 |
| Spicy Raspberry | Fruity | ₹6.00/g | ₹95.98 | ₹35.99 | ₹104.98 |
| Neroli | Floral-citrus | ₹6.66/g | ₹106.48 | ₹39.93 | ₹116.47 |
A melt pack uses the least oil per unit but the most per gram of product (10% against 8% and 7%). A pillar uses the most per unit. Across a month, which product drives your oil bill depends on how many of each you sell. Two of the four core oils have a real kilo saving — Lemongrass and Lime (11.9%) and Pumpkin Spice (10.0%). Neroli and Spicy Raspberry are priced flat, so their kilo is about convenience.

The oil is 36% of the monthly materials. The same four bottles supply all three products, so a slow month for jars and a busy month for melts does not strand oil in the wrong product — it is the same stock. Material cost excludes labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST. Wick sizes are not published in our data, so both wick lines assume your burn tests confirmed them. Two pillar moulds let you pour 80 pillars a month in rounds; weigh your mould's fill, because the 250 g pillar is illustrative.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Oil = product weight × load. The 200 g jar follows this series' default; the 60 g melt pack and 250 g pillar are illustrative. Loads of 8% (jars), 10% (melts) and 7% (pillars), monthly quantities and the 3% allowance are working assumptions. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums; no ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax is published in our data.
