₹66.95
materials for a 45 g mini-jar Lavender candle, 33.64% of a ₹199 price
Quick answers — read this first
What do materials cost for a ₹199 mini candle? About ₹66.95 for a 45 g Mini Glass Jar candle in CSI 464 with Lavender at 8% and an Eco C1, excluding packaging, labour, shipping and GST.

Which raw material saves the most money in a mini? Usually the vessel or the oil, not the wax. Switching to a cheaper tested wax saves about ₹4.48 per 45 g mini; changing jars moves cost by ₹25.96.

Can I use a premium oud in a ₹299 mini? In a 120 g candle the oud alone costs ₹77.79 and materials reach ₹186.91, 62.51% of ₹299. Keep premium oils for higher-priced or smaller candles.

What makes a cheap candle look cheap? Underfilled jars, rough or frosted tops, a mismatched label and a weak scent. Those depend on vessel, process and oil choice more than on the wax price.
The short answer
Cost basis: CSI 464 at ₹0.5074 per g from the 10 kg pack, 8% load, Eco C1 at ₹5.90; packaging excluded.
Cheaper wax option: Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹0.3992 per g from 5 kg; no load published, so test first.
Spend priority: Vessel and fragrance change perception; wax specification is invisible to customers.
Material cost per mini buildB · 45 g mini, Lavender₹67A · 70 g votive, Lemon₹86D · 120 g, Eucalyptus₹139C · 120 g, White Royal Oud₹187
Oil choice alone moves a 120 g candle's material cost by ₹186.91 − ₹138.57 = ₹48.34.
Straight answer
I Want to Sell Mini Candles at ₹199–₹299 — How Do I Choose Raw Materials That Keep COGS Controlled Without Making the Product Feel Cheap?
Work from your price (₹199–₹299) downwards. In the worked builds, a 45 g Mini Glass Jar candle with Lavender costs ₹66.95 in materials (33.64% of ₹199), a 70 g votive with Citrus Lemon ₹86.30, and a 120 g lidded jar ₹138.57 with Eucalyptus Spearmint or ₹186.91 with White Royal Oud. Spend on what customers notice: the jar, a generous consistent fill, a clean top and a well-chosen oil. Save where they cannot tell, for instance by testing a cheaper container wax, which saves about ₹4.48 per mini. Add your own packaging quote before fixing the price.
One line: in a ₹199–₹299 mini, the jar and the oil carry the perception and the cost, so choose them first and test the wax for savings.
Mini Glass Jars fall from ₹25.96 each in the 5-pack to ₹21.24 each in the 100-pack, the biggest per-unit saving in a mini build.

Start from your price, not from our catalogue

At ₹199 to ₹299, the materials you choose are a visible share of the price, so every rupee should go where the customer can see or smell it.

A mini candle at ₹199 or ₹299 has very little room for waste. Your selling price (your figure) has to cover materials, the box or sleeve, a label, your time, platform or shop fees, shipping where you pay it, GST and a margin. CSI can only help with the first of those. This page works out what the materials cost for four realistic mini builds, then shows which choices change how the product feels and which only change the invoice.

Every figure below excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. Packaging in particular is your own number, because CSI does not sell it; at this price point it can easily rival the cost of the candle inside it, so put a real quote against it before you set a price.

Four mini builds, costed with CSI prices

Each build uses CSI 464 soy wax (₹0.5074 per g from the 10 kg pack: ₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g), a fragrance load of 8% of total weight as a suggested starting point, and an Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90 as the first wick to test. Fill weights are illustrations; weigh your own.

1
Build A: 70 g votive jar, Citrus Lemon. Wax 64.4 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹32.68; oil 5.6 g × ₹2.832 (₹2,832.00 ÷ 1,000 g) = ₹15.86; jar ₹318.60 ÷ 10 = ₹31.86; wick ₹5.90. Total ₹86.30.
2
Build B: Mini Glass Jar at a weighed 45 g, Lavender. Wax 41.4 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹21.01; oil 3.6 g × ₹5.221 = ₹18.80; jar ₹2,124.00 ÷ 100 = ₹21.24; wick ₹5.90. Total ₹66.95.
3
Build C: 120 g shiny jar with lid, White Royal Oud. Wax 110.4 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹56.02; oil 9.6 g × ₹8.103 = ₹77.79; jar ₹47.20; wick ₹5.90. Total ₹186.91.
4
Build D: 120 g shiny jar with lid, Eucalyptus Spearmint. Wax ₹56.02; oil 9.6 g × ₹3.068 = ₹29.45; jar ₹47.20; wick ₹5.90. Total ₹138.57.
Material cost against your price
Share of a ₹199 and a ₹299 retail price (your figures)
Build Materials % of ₹199 % of ₹299 Left from ₹299 for everything else
A · 70 g votive, Citrus Lemon ₹86.30 43.37% 28.86% ₹212.70
B · 45 g mini jar, Lavender ₹66.95 33.64% 22.39% ₹232.05
C · 120 g lidded, White Royal Oud ₹186.91 93.92% 62.51% ₹112.09
D · 120 g lidded, Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹138.57 69.63% 46.34% ₹160.43

The percentages are simple division: ₹86.30 ÷ ₹199 = 43.37%, and so on. The column on the right is ₹299 minus the material cost, and it is what remains to pay for the box, label, labour, fees, shipping, GST and profit. Your own target margin decides which builds survive.

Build C is the instructive one. Putting a premium oud in a 120 g candle costs more in fragrance alone (₹77.79) than the whole of Build B. At ₹199 it is not viable, and at ₹299 it leaves only ₹112.09 for everything else. A premium oil belongs in a full-size, higher-priced candle, or in a much smaller mini.

What makes a mini feel cheap, and what does not

Customers do not see your wax invoice. They see the vessel, the fill level, the surface, the label and the box, and they smell the candle before and after lighting. Spend on those, and economise where nobody notices.

Spend or save
Where rupees change perception in a ₹199–₹299 mini
Choice Customer notices? Rupee effect in Build B Verdict
Jar: mini jar vs 120 g lidded jar Yes, strongly ₹47.20 − ₹21.24 = ₹25.96 more Spend if the price can carry it
Oil: Lavender vs Citrus Lemon Yes, by scent preference 3.6 g × (₹5.221 − ₹2.832) = ₹8.60 Choose by appeal, not price alone
Wax: CSI 464 vs Eco Soy CSI 400 (5 kg) Rarely, if both pass testing 41.4 g × (₹0.5074 − ₹0.3992) = ₹4.48 saved Test the cheaper wax; switch only if it performs
Fill level Yes, an underfilled jar looks mean Grams of wax, a few rupees Fill consistently to a generous line
Smooth, clean top Yes, immediately Process, not material Worth the extra care

The wax line is the honest one. Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹1,996.00 per 5 kg, which is ₹0.3992 per g, against ₹0.5074 for CSI 464, and the saving on a 45 g mini is ₹4.48. That is real money over hundreds of units, but only if CSI 400 gives you the same finish and throw in your jar; CSI publishes no fragrance load for it, so test it at your intended load before switching. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is another lower-cost container option at ₹4,248.00 per 10 kg (₹0.4248 per g), again with no published load. If a cheaper wax looks worse on the top, the saving is false.

A rule for this price band
If the wax is the same across your range, the extra rupees should go into the fragrance and the vessel, not into a dearer wax. Customers notice the jar and the scent; they cannot see the wax specification.

A lean specification that still feels considered

For most makers at ₹199, Build B is the starting template: a Mini Glass Jar in Black or Golden, CSI 464 filled to a consistent weighed line, one well-chosen oil at a tested load, and an Eco C1 wick if it passes. At ₹299, the extra headroom can go into the 120 g lidded jar with a mid-priced oil such as Eucalyptus Spearmint (Build D), or into better packaging around Build B. Which one sells better is a question for your customers, not for us.

Remember that the material cost is only the start of the arithmetic. Platform fees, returns and breakages, free samples and the occasional remake all come out of the same gap between price and material cost. If Build B leaves ₹132.05 from ₹199, that figure has to absorb every one of those before any profit appears, which is why the cheapest sound build is the right default at this price.

Avoid three traps. Do not add mica to make a burning mini sparkle; it can clog the wick and belongs in melts and surfaces. Do not push the fragrance load up to compensate for a cheap oil; it can affect the burn and rarely fixes a weak profile. And do not cut the wick test, because a mini that tunnels or soots undoes everything the jar and box achieved.

Two price points, two different products

If you plan to sell at both ₹199 and ₹299, make the difference visible rather than incremental. A customer comparing the two should see a reason for the extra ₹299 − ₹199 = ₹100 at a glance: a larger lidded jar, a different oil family, or a gift-ready presentation. Adding a few grams of wax to the same jar does not create that reason, and it erodes the margin on the product that sells more. Many makers find that a clear small-and-larger pair sells better than two near-identical minis, but that is a hypothesis to test with your own customers, not a rule.

Argue against interest
Our dearer wax will not make your mini feel dearer.
If two waxes both pass your test, the cheaper one is the right one at ₹199. Spend the difference on the jar, the scent or the box.
At ₹199, the customer pays for what they see and smell.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

what should a mini candle cost to make
It depends on your jar, fill and oil. In the worked builds, materials ranged from ₹66.95 for a 45 g mini jar to ₹186.91 for a 120 g jar with a premium oud, excluding packaging, labour, shipping and GST.
how much margin on a 199 rupee candle
That is your own target. In Build B, materials are ₹66.95, leaving ₹132.05 from ₹199 for packaging, labels, labour, fees, shipping, GST and profit. Put a real packaging quote into that figure first.
is cheaper soy wax ok for mini candles
It can be, if it passes your test. Eco Soy CSI 400 costs ₹0.3992 per g from 5 kg against ₹0.5074 for CSI 464, but no fragrance load is published, so test finish and throw before switching.
which jar is cheapest for mini candles
Among CSI's small vessels, the Mini Glass Jars at ₹21.24 each in the 100-pack. The 70 g votive jar is ₹31.86 each in a 10-pack, and the 120 g lidded jar ₹47.20 each.
can I use expensive fragrance oil in small candles
Yes, but match it to the price. White Royal Oud at 8% of a 120 g candle costs ₹77.79 in oil alone. In a smaller mini or a higher-priced product it can work; at ₹199 in 120 g it cannot.
how do I make a cheap candle look premium
Fill consistently to a generous line, get a smooth clean top, choose a jar that suits the brand and an oil customers like, and keep the label and box tidy. These matter more than the wax specification.
