Sculptural candles · courier shipping
No CSI wax has a published temperature it will survive in a parcel. So the right wax for courier shipping is the one that comes back from your own hot-parcel test with its detail intact.
5 bases
plain and blended CSI waxes, three test pieces each
Quick answers — read this first
Which CSI wax resists deformation best in shipping? CSI publishes no hardness or heat limit for any wax, so test. Compare Soy Pillar Wax, paraffin pellets and blends with microcrystalline wax or Vybar in a real parcel.

Can I use container soy wax for shipped sculptures? Not as the main wax. CSI 464, Chunks, 468, Pearl and 400 are container waxes meant to stay soft; sculptures need a free-standing base.

What should I look for after a test parcel? Softened detail, lean or sag, flattened contact points, scuffs, fragrance weeping onto wrapping and any surface bloom, compared against a piece kept indoors.

Does packaging matter as much as wax? Often more. Rigid inserts, air space and a light-coloured outer box help. Packaging is your own cost; CSI does not sell it.
The short answer
Bases to test: Soy Pillar Wax; paraffin pellets; Pillar + 5% micro; Pillar + 1% Vybar; paraffin + 5% micro.
Method: Three pieces per base: indoor control, warm sealed box, and a real return parcel.
Test buy: Pillar 1 kg, paraffin 1 kg, micro 500 g, Vybar 50 g: ₹1,259.00.
Wax cost per 100 g test piece, unscentedSoy Pillar Wax₹60Paraffin pellets₹35Pillar + 5% micro₹58Pillar + 1% Vybar₹63Paraffin + 5% micro₹35
The five bases differ by at most ₹27.39 per 100 g piece, so the shipping test, not the price, should decide.
Straight answer
I Want to Sell Sculptural Candles Online Across India — Which Wax Should I Test for Resistance to Deformation During Courier Shipping?
Test, because CSI publishes no temperature that any of its waxes will survive in a hot parcel, and no hardness figures. Pour the same small sculpture in five bases: Soy Pillar Wax, Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, Pillar Wax with 5% microcrystalline wax, Pillar Wax with 1% Vybar, and paraffin with 5% microcrystalline. Make three of each. Keep one indoors as a control, leave one sealed in a box in your hottest spot for a day, and send one as a real parcel to a friend in another city and back. The base whose detail, stance and surface come back unchanged is your shipping wax. The four test packs cost ₹1,259.00.
One line: pour five bases, ship one of each through a real courier, and choose the wax that returns unchanged.
Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets are sold for pillars and containers at ₹354.00 per kg, and belong in any shipping test alongside soy.

What a courier journey does to a sculpture

A sculpture that survives your shelf has passed only the easiest test it will face.

A parcel moving across India spends time in places you never see: a sorting hub, the back of a delivery van parked in the afternoon sun, a porch or a stairwell. Heat softens the wax. At the same time, the parcel is stacked, dropped and vibrated. A sculpture can come through with no visible melting and still arrive with a nose flattened where it pressed against the box, a lean in a tall figure, or a cloudy sheen where fragrance moved to the surface.

There is no number we can give you that makes this go away. No CSI wax has a published temperature it will survive, and CSI publishes no hardness or melt point for Soy Pillar Wax. A temperature quoted for a wax in general has never been measured inside your box, on your route, in your month. What you can do is compare bases under the conditions your parcels actually meet, and choose the one with the most margin.

Notice what kind of damage you are guarding against. Fine, thin detail, such as fingers, petals, hair or sharp ridges, softens first. Points of contact with packaging deform under pressure when warm. Tall, narrow forms lean. And fragrance oil, which stays liquid, can weep out of a warm piece and stain wrapping. Each base you test should be judged on all four.

Five bases worth testing

Container waxes are off the list. CSI 464, Chunks, CSI 468, Pearl and CSI 400 are made to stay soft and grip glass, which is the opposite of what a free-standing shape needs in a hot van. The five bases below use CSI's free-standing wax, CSI's paraffin and CSI's two additives at their stated ranges. CSI sells no ready-made hard wax blend, so the three blends are your own formulation.

Test bases
Five bases for a 100 g test sculpture, unscented
Base Recipe per 100 g Working Wax cost
A. Soy Pillar Wax 100 g Pillar Wax 100 × ₹0.60 ₹60.00
B. Paraffin pellets 100 g pellets 100 × ₹0.354 ₹35.40
C. Pillar + micro 95 g Pillar + 5 g micro ₹57.00 + 5 × ₹0.299 = ₹57.00 + ₹1.50 ₹58.50
D. Pillar + Vybar 99 g Pillar + 1 g Vybar ₹59.40 + 1 × ₹3.12 ₹62.52
E. Paraffin + micro 95 g pellets + 5 g micro 95 × ₹0.354 + ₹1.50 = ₹33.63 + ₹1.50 ₹35.13

Microcrystalline wax is costed at ₹299.00 per kg and states a 1–10% blend; 5% sits mid-range as a starting point. Vybar is costed at ₹312.00 per 100 g and states 0.5–2%; 1% is the starting point here. The costs exclude fragrance, wick, packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

Two things are worth saying plainly. Paraffin bases are the cheapest per piece, but they make a paraffin product, which matters if your listing says soy. And the spread across all five is small, ₹62.52 at the top against ₹35.13 at the bottom, so do not let a few rupees of wax decide a product whose returns will cost far more.

The three-piece shipping test

Choose one sculpture design, ideally your most delicate one, and pour three pieces in each base. That is fifteen pieces. Use the same mould, the same pour and the same fragrance load you intend to sell, because fragrance softens the wax and an unscented test will flatter every base. Cure them all together for at least the product pages' stated 48 to 72 hours for soy, and a week if you can.

1
Piece one: indoor control. Keep it on a shelf in your workshop. It is your reference for what unchanged looks like.
2
Piece two: warm sealed box. Pack it exactly as you would ship it and leave the box in the hottest place you have access to, a closed car in the sun or a top-floor room, for a full day as a starting point. Do not place it directly on a hot surface; you are simulating a parcel, not a stove.
3
Piece three: real parcel. Ship it through your normal courier to a friend or family member in another city and ask them to send it straight back unopened. This is the only part of the test that includes the handling, stacking and vans you cannot imitate.
4
Compare all three side by side. Look at fine detail under raking light, stand them on a flat surface to check for lean, look for flattened contact points and scuffs, and check the wrapping for oil marks.
Scoring sheet
Mark each base after the parcel returns
Check Pass Borderline Fail
Fine detail Same as control Slightly softened edges Detail rounded or lost
Stance Stands straight Slight lean Visible sag or bend
Contact points No marks Faint flattening Dents or deformed areas
Surface Same as control Light bloom Greasy or oil-marked wrap
Test in the worst month
A parcel test in December tells you little about May. If you can, repeat the warm-box and real-parcel pieces in the hottest weeks you plan to ship through, or pause shipping sculptures in those weeks.
Every base fails the real parcel. The packaging is likely the bigger problem. Re-test the best base with a rigid insert that holds the sculpture by its strongest areas, more air space, and a light-coloured outer box, before blaming the wax.

Reading the results

Rank the bases by how close the parcel piece is to its indoor control, not by how good it looks on its own. A base that scores borderline on detail but passes everything else may still be the right choice for a chunky geometric design, while the same score would rule it out for a delicate face. If two bases tie, prefer the one with the smaller change between the warm-box piece and the control, because it has more margin for a worse journey than your test parcel had.

Then burn-test the winner. A firmer blend may melt less readily, so the wick that suited plain Pillar Wax might under-perform in it. Test Eco C1 or Eco C2 in a cured piece of the winning base, on a heat-resistant plate, never unattended, before you commit to the blend for your range.

What helps besides the wax

Wax is only one part of survival. A modest fragrance load helps, because each extra gram of liquid oil softens the shape. If your best base passes at 5% but softens at 8%, ship at 5%. Dark colours absorb more heat than pale ones in direct sun, so a black sculpture may need more care than a cream one in the same box. Design matters too: thick bases, short projections and rounded rather than needle-thin detail all travel better.

Packaging is your own cost, since CSI does not sell boxes or inserts. Think about what holds the piece: it should be supported at its strongest, thickest points, with nothing pressing on thin detail. Leave the customer a note to let the candle rest at room temperature before unwrapping if it feels warm, and to keep it out of direct sun.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

The test needs one pack of each base material: Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg at ₹600.00, Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets 1 kg at ₹354.00, Microcrystalline Wax Slab 500 g at ₹149.00 and Vybar 50 g at ₹156.00. That is ₹600.00 + ₹354.00 + ₹149.00 + ₹156.00 = ₹1,259.00. Fifteen 100 g pieces use 1.5 kg in total, which these packs cover: 882 g of Pillar Wax across bases A, C and D, 585 g of paraffin across B and E, 30 g of microcrystalline and 3 g of Vybar.

Once one base wins, buy only that base in volume. If it is Pillar Wax with 5% microcrystalline, a 10 kg pack of Pillar Wax at ₹6,000.00 pairs with about 526 g of microcrystalline, because 10,000 g is 95% of a 10,526 g batch; buy the 1 kg slab at ₹299.00. Then repeat one real-parcel test with the scented, wicked, packaged product before your first large dispatch.

Argue against interest
We cannot tell you a temperature our wax will survive, and you should distrust anyone who does.
No such figure is published for any CSI wax. A ₹1,259.00 test and one return parcel give you real evidence for your own route.
The right shipping wax is the one that comes home looking like the one that stayed home.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

best wax for shipping sculptural candles in india
There is no published answer, because no CSI wax has a stated heat limit. Test Soy Pillar Wax, paraffin pellets and blends with microcrystalline wax or Vybar in a real return parcel, and choose the one that arrives unchanged.
how to stop candles melting during courier delivery
No wax comes with a promised heat limit. Choose a free-standing base that passed your parcel test, keep the fragrance load modest, use rigid packaging that supports the strongest points, and avoid shipping in the hottest weeks if your tests fail.
is paraffin better than soy for shipping candles
CSI publishes no hardness for either, so compare them in a parcel test. Paraffin pellets cost less per gram, but they make a paraffin product, which matters if you sell on soy.
does microcrystalline wax help candles survive heat
Makers add it to firm a base. Its CSI listing gives a 1–10% blend range. It is your own formula, so judge it against plain wax in the same parcel test rather than assuming it helps.
how to test candles for summer shipping
Pour three pieces per wax. Keep one indoors, leave one packed in a hot car or room for a day, and send one through a real courier and back. Compare detail, stance, contact points and surface.
why did my candle arrive with flattened detail
Warm wax deforms where it presses against packaging. A firmer base helps, but so does packaging that supports the candle at thick points and keeps thin detail clear of the box walls.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
