Starting Budget · 50 Candles
The honest answer is neither "exactly 50" nor "the next batch too". Wax, jars and wicks are shared by every scent and can sensibly cover two batches. Fragrance is locked to one scent and should cover one. This page prices all three ways to buy.
₹10,583.00
extra spend to hold wax, jars and wicks for a second batch of 50 while buying fragrance for one · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I buy raw materials for exactly 50 candles? For fragrance, yes. For wax, jars and wicks, buy for two batches if your jar and wick have passed testing. That hybrid costs ₹29,101.02, against ₹18,518.02 for exactly 50 and ₹34,262.02 for two full batches.

Why not buy fragrance for the next batch too? Because the next batch may not use the same scents. After 50 candles you know which scent sold; buying its oil then costs no more per gram for most oils, and stuck oil cannot move to another scent. Here, doubling the oil would add ₹5,161.00.

Does buying exactly 50 leave nothing over? No. Pack sizes force some extra. Buying for 50 already leaves 693 g of wax (before pour loss), 4 jars and 4 wicks, a small start on batch 2. See pack rounding.

What is the cost of reordering small? Each extra order has costs CSI does not publish, such as your delivery charge. As an example only, ₹150.00 an order (replace with your real figure). That friction applies to wax and jars far more than to oil.
The short answer
Option A: Exactly 50 (53 pours + 3 tests): testers ₹661.02 · oil ₹6,466.00 · wax 11 kg ₹6,589.00 · 60 jars ₹4,248.00 · wicks ₹354.00 · stickers ₹200.00 = ₹18,518.02.
Option C (recommended): Fragrance for batch 1, shared materials for batches 1 and 2 = ₹29,101.02.
Option B: Everything for two batches = ₹34,262.02; adds ₹5,161.00 of scent-specific oil. The 100-candle bill of materials covers the full-run case.
50 candles — buy for one batch, two, or split the difference by material A · exactly 50₹18,518.02shared ₹11,391.00 · fragrance ₹7,127.02C · shared ×2, oil ×1₹29,101.02shared ₹21,974.00 · fragrance ₹7,127.02B · two batches₹34,262.02shared ₹21,974.00 · fragrance ₹12,288.02 Grey = wax, jars, wicks, stickers (shared by every scent). Black = fragrance (locked to one scent). Option C doubles only the grey.
All three options are at CSI's listed prices for the same three scents. Option A buys for 50 candles and rounds up to packs. Option B buys everything for 100. Option C, the recommendation, buys wax, jars, wicks and stickers for 100 but fragrance for 50, because fragrance is the only material that cannot move between scents if the second batch changes.
Straight answer
I want to start a candle business with 50 finished candles. Is it better to buy raw materials for exactly 50, or enough for the next production batch too?
Split the decision by material. Buy fragrance for exactly this batch, and buy wax, jars, wicks and stickers for two batches, provided the jar and wick have already passed a burn test. Fragrance is the only material locked to one scent: if Mahogany Teakwood sells out and Spicy Cinnamon does not, the second batch should not be a copy of the first, and any oil bought for it is stuck. Wax, jars and wicks go into whatever you pour next. At CSI's prices, exactly 50 candles in three scents (53 pours plus 3 test candles, with 5% pour loss) costs ₹18,518.02. Buying everything for two batches costs ₹34,262.02, of which ₹5,161.00 is extra fragrance. The hybrid costs ₹29,101.02, ₹10,583.00 more than exactly 50. It removes a wax and jar reorder from the middle of your second batch, and adds nothing that can go stale in the wrong scent. Pack sizes mean even "exactly 50" leaves some wax and jars over, which is a head start on batch two either way.
One line: shared materials for two batches, fragrance for one.
Wax for two batches of 50 is 22 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, ₹13,178.00, bought as 5 kg packs plus 1 kg. The 5 kg is exactly ₹599.00 a kilo; the 10 kg (₹5,999.00) is ₹9.00 dearer than two 5 kg packs, so it is not used here.

Shared vs scent-specific

Buying ahead is only risky for the materials that cannot change their mind.

The question "exactly 50 or the next batch too?" usually gets one answer for everything. It deserves two. Some materials are shared: every candle uses 184 g of wax, a wick and a jar, whatever it smells of. If batch two is a different mix of scents, those materials still fit. Other materials are scent-specific: the oil in a Spicy Cinnamon bottle only ever makes Spicy Cinnamon candles. Buying ahead on shared materials carries little risk. Buying ahead on fragrance is a bet that batch two will look like batch one.

The rule, material by material
What can safely cover two batches
Material Type Buy for two batches? Condition
Wax Shared Yes Store it cool and dry; check the product page for storage guidance
Jars Shared Yes Only once one jar is settled — test or standardise?
Wicks Shared Yes Only once the wick has passed a full burn test in that jar
Wick stickers Shared Yes Cheap and compact
Fragrance Scent-specific No Reorder the scents that sold, in the quantities they sold
Labels, boxes (your suppliers) Scent- or jar-specific Usually no Depends on your printer's minimums

Two conditions sit under the shared materials. The jar must be the one you will keep using, and the wick must have passed a burn test in it. If either is still being tested, those items become scent-like: buying a second batch of an untested jar is a bet on the jar. The smallest practical test quantities covers getting to that point.

Three ways to buy, priced

The worked example is three scents: Orchard Pear (17 candles), Spicy Cinnamon (17) and Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) (16). Each gets one extra pour to cover a reject and one test candle before production. Wax and oil get 5% for pour loss, a working assumption at the top of this series' 3–5% range. Candles are 200 g at an 8% load in White Matte Glass Jars with Eco Thin C1 wicks. Batch two, where it is bought, is assumed to repeat batch one.

Exactly 50 vs two batches vs the hybrid

Total ₹18,518.02 ₹34,262.02 ₹29,101.02

Option C costs ₹10,583.00 more than A and ₹5,161.00 less than B. The extra over A is almost all wax and jars, which will be used whatever sells. The saving against B is entirely fragrance, which may not be. Tools are assumed owned; the standard set is ₹1,475.00 at CSI's prices if not.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Option B is the bigger order, and "buy for the next batch too" is advice suppliers like to give. For wax and jars we agree. For fragrance we do not: on our own listed prices, most oils cost the same per gram at 100 g as at 500 g, so buying the second batch's oil now saves you nothing and risks ₹5,161.00 on scents that may not be reordered.

Pack rounding already buys part of batch 2

You cannot buy exactly 50 candles' worth of anything. The packs decide how much extra you already hold.

Even Option A leaves material over, because wax comes in 1 kg and 5 kg steps, jars in fives, wicks in tens and twenties, and oil in 50 g, 100 g and larger packs. The table shows what a strict "exactly 50" order leaves behind before any pour loss. It is a small but real start on the next batch, and it slightly reduces what Option C has to add.

Option A leftovers · before pour loss
What "exactly 50" already leaves over
Material Bought Used for 53 pours + 3 tests Left over Worth in batch 2
Wax 11 kg 10,307 g 693 g about 3 candles' wax before pour loss
Jars 60 56 4 4 candles
Wicks 60 56 4 4 candles
Orchard Pear 50 g + 3 × 100 g 288 g 62 g 3 candles, if the scent is repeated
Spicy Cinnamon 50 g + 3 × 100 g 288 g 62 g 3 candles, if the scent is repeated
Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) 3 × 100 g + 50 g tester 272 g 63 g 3 candles, if the scent is repeated

The oil leftovers are useful only if the scent is repeated, which is the point of the whole page. The wax, jar and wick leftovers are useful whatever happens. Moving from A to C simply tops the shared materials up to a full second batch.

The fragrance side

Orchard Pear and Spicy Cinnamon each need 18 pours × 16 g = 288 g, plus 5% for pour loss, 302.4 g; Mahogany Teakwood needs 17 pours, 272 g, or 285.6 g with loss. Mahogany Teakwood has no 15 g listing, so its 50 g serves as the tester and the 35 g left after the test candle is credited to production. The table shows the cheapest in-stock mix for one batch and for two.

Per scent · 18 pours × 16 g + 5% per batch · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Fragrance for one batch vs two

Total ₹661.02 ₹6,466.00 ₹11,627.00 ₹5,161.00

For Orchard Pear, the second batch's oil is slightly cheaper per gram because the bigger need reaches the 500 g, ₹3.74 a gram against ₹3.80 at 100 g. For Spicy Cinnamon the 500 g is ₹6.50 against ₹6.99 at 100 g, a real 7.0% break. For Mahogany Teakwood the price is ₹8.80 a gram at every size, so buying ahead saves nothing at all. In every case the saving is small next to the risk: if one of the three scents is not repeated, its whole second-batch oil is stuck.

When to buy the whole next batch

There are cases where Option B is right. They all share one feature: you already know what batch two will be. The walkthrough is the decision in order.

1
Is the jar settled and the wick proven? If not, buy shared materials for one batch only. Everything becomes scent-like until the jar and wick pass.
2
Is batch two already sold?A confirmed order, a pre-sale or a repeat gifting client means batch two is known. Buy everything for it, including fragrance. Calculating materials before quoting 100 candles covers order-led buying.
3
Is one scent a clear leader already? If one scent sold out in the first days, buy its batch-two oil now. For the others, wait.
4
Does a reorder cost you real money or time?If your delivery charge is significant (as an example, ₹150.00 an order; use your own figure) or delivery takes long enough to stall production, lean towards C for wax and jars. Oil is light and cheap to add to the next order.
5
Otherwise, buy CShared materials for two batches, fragrance for one. Reorder oil by what sold.
The CSI principle
Buy ahead on what every candle needs. Buy just-in-time on what only one scent needs.
Wax, jars and wicks will be poured whatever sells. Fragrance will only be poured if its scent sells. Treat the two differently and the question of how far ahead to buy mostly answers itself.
The false saving of the second batch. Makers often buy two batches of everything "to save on shipping". The shipping saving is real but small, and CSI does not publish a delivery threshold to aim for. The oil for a scent that does not sell is a larger, permanent loss. If you want to consolidate orders, consolidate the shared materials. Whether larger orders really save on shipping does that maths properly.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026. If your first 50 are for the festive window, a batch-two reorder of the leading scent will likely be needed in October. Tell us your three scents on WhatsApp and we will confirm stock of the 100 g and 500 g sizes, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation on request.
Check stock for my reorder on WhatsApp

After the first 50 sell, the same logic scales. A lean inventory for three months sets a pace, how much wax to hold before marketing sets the wax buffer, and one, two or three months of wax takes the shared-materials question to a monthly rhythm.

Wax for two batches is a convenience. Fragrance for two batches is a forecast.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Recommending two full batches would double the fragrance order. This page recommends against it, shows that Mahogany Teakwood is priced flat at every size so buying ahead cannot save money, and names the one oil in the set, Spicy Cinnamon, where a bigger pack genuinely does.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco wicks are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026; the 20-wick pack and wick stickers are from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Pack mixes are the cheapest in-stock combinations covering each need; totals and leftovers are arithmetic on those prices and quantities.

The split of 17, 17 and 16 candles, one reject pour per scent, 5% pour loss, and the assumption that batch two repeats batch one are working assumptions. The ₹150.00 delivery charge is an example, not a CSI figure. For a stock check, a consolidated quote, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need for 50 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%: 50 × 184 g = 9.2 kg net. With 3 reject pours, 3 test candles and 5% pour loss it is 10,822 g, so 11 kg. For two batches, 22 kg.
Should I stock up on candle supplies before I have orders?
On shared materials — wax, jars, wicks — a second batch is reasonable once the jar and wick have passed testing. On fragrance, buy for the batch in front of you and reorder by what sells.
Is it cheaper to buy candle wax in bulk?
Not for these waxes at CSI's listed prices. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg and slightly more at 10 kg; CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at every size. Natural Soy Pearl is the exception, ₹450.00 at 1 kg and ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg.
How much fragrance oil for 50 candles?
About 800 g net at 16 g per 200 g candle. With a reject pour per scent and 5% loss, about 286 g to 302 g per scent for three scents. At CSI's prices here that is ₹6,466.00 plus ₹661.02 for testers.
What if my second batch uses different scents?
That is exactly why fragrance should be bought one batch at a time. Wax, jars and wicks bought for batch two still fit; oil bought for a scent you drop does not.
How many candles should my first batch be?
Enough for each scent to show whether it sells. Fifty across three scents gives 16 or 17 each, a readable result. The ₹10,000 plan starts with 24, and the 100-candle list with 100.
Shared ahead, scent just in time
