Mould collections · test before bulk
A collection multiplies every decision by the number of designs, scents and colours in it. Testing small first is not caution; it is the only way to know which of those combinations deserve a 10 kg order.
₹6,001.10
a complete CSI test kit for a three-design, four-scent mould collection
Quick answers — read this first
What should I test before buying wholesale? Wax release and firmness, fragrance load per oil, colour stability, wick performance and, if you ship, a real parcel. Test them in that order, one variable at a time.

How much does a mould-collection test kit cost? The worked kit on this page, two waxes, two additives, four oils, two dyes, three wick types, three moulds and basic tools, comes to ₹6,001.10 at CSI's October 2026 prices.

Which wax should a mould collection test? CSI Soy Pillar Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, with microcrystalline wax and Vybar on hand for blends. Container waxes are not suited to free-standing shapes.

Which oil pack size suits testing? 15 g packs. At 5% of an 80 g piece, each piece takes 4 g, so 15 g covers three test pieces per scent.
The short answer
Test kit: ₹6,001.10: wax ₹1,259.00, oils ₹397.66, dye ₹500.00, wicks ₹919.22, moulds ₹1,509.22, tools ₹1,416.00.
Order of tests: Wax and release, then fragrance load, then colour, then wick, then shipping.
Wholesale gate: Buy in bulk only the combinations that passed every phase.

Straight answer
I Want to Start a Commercial Mould-Candle Collection — What Wax, Fragrance, Dye, Wick and Silicone-Mould Materials Should I Test Before Buying Wholesale Quantities?
Test each layer of the collection in order, at small pack sizes, before buying any bulk. Start with wax and release in your chosen moulds (CSI Soy Pillar Wax against paraffin pellets, with microcrystalline wax and Vybar for blends), then fragrance load per oil from 15 g packs, then colour with dye chips, then wicks (Eco C1, Eco C2 and braided roll), and finally a real parcel if you ship. The full kit for three designs and four scents costs ₹6,001.10 at CSI's October 2026 prices. Only the combinations that pass every phase go on the wholesale order, which starts with Pillar Wax 10 kg at ₹6,000.00.
One line: buy a ₹6,001.10 test kit, pass each combination through five gates, and order wholesale only what passed.
CSI's silicone moulds include the Lotus Flower at ₹295.00, the 15 Cavity Rose at ₹153.40 and ribbed pillars from ₹1,060.82, enough to test three collection formats.

Why a collection needs testing before bulk

One candle has one recipe; a collection of three designs in four scents and two colours has twenty-four.

A single product can be tested in a weekend. A collection cannot, because each combination of design, scent, colour and wick is its own candle. A rose oil that sits well in a small rose cavity may soften a ribbed pillar. A dye that looks right in soy may look different in paraffin. A wick that suits the lotus may drown in the pillar. If you buy wholesale quantities before you know which combinations work, you end up holding kilos of material for products you cannot sell.

The answer is not to test everything against everything. It is to test in a fixed order, so each phase narrows the options for the next. Wax first, because nothing else matters if the shape does not release or hold. Then fragrance, because it changes firmness. Then colour, because dye shifts with oil and wax. Then wick, last, because dye and fragrance both affect the burn. Shipping, if you sell online, sits at the end because it judges the finished product.

The test kit, line by line

This kit is built for a three-design collection, a ribbed pillar, a lotus flower and small roses, in four scents and two colours. Swap items to suit your own designs; the structure stays the same.

Test kit

Category Items Prices Subtotal
Wax Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg; paraffin pellets 1 kg; microcrystalline 500 g; Vybar 50 g ₹600.00 + ₹354.00 + ₹149.00 + ₹156.00 ₹1,259.00
Fragrance Sandalwood, British Rose, Bergamot Amber, Lavender, 15 g each ₹93.22 + ₹94.40 + ₹105.02 + ₹105.02 ₹397.66
Dye Dye chips, Red and Blue ₹250.00 + ₹250.00 ₹500.00
Wicks Eco C1 20; Eco C2 10; Braided Wick Roll 61 m ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 + ₹706.82 ₹919.22
Moulds Ribbed Pillar 5 × 10 cm; Lotus Flower; 15 Cavity Rose ₹1,060.82 + ₹295.00 + ₹153.40 ₹1,509.22
Tools Weighing scale; pen thermometer; large pouring pitcher ₹354.00 + ₹354.00 + ₹708.00 ₹1,416.00
Total ₹6,001.10

A few notes on the choices. Sandalwood is the 15 g pack because its 50 g and 100 g packs were out of stock on the October 2026 pull. British Rose and Sandalwood both state 0% vanillin, which matters for pale colours. The scale's capacity and resolution are not published, so check that it repeats a reading before relying on it. If you already own tools, the kit drops to ₹6,001.10 − ₹1,416.00 = ₹4,585.10.

Why only 15 g of each oil
At 5% of an 80 g lotus piece, the oil is 4 g, so 15 g covers three pieces per scent with a little spare. You are testing which oils behave in your wax, not making stock.

The five gates every combination must pass

1
Gate one: wax and release. Pour each design unscented in Soy Pillar Wax and in paraffin pellets. Check clean release, sharp detail and firmness after setting. If a design fails in both, try a blend with microcrystalline wax at its stated 1–10% or Vybar at 0.5–2%, as your own formula.
2
Gate two: fragrance load. In the winning wax, pour each scent at your intended load, 5% of total weight as a starting point. After the product pages' stated 48 to 72 hours of cure for soy, check firmness, weeping on paper and cold throw. Smell again at a week.
3
Gate three: colour. Make a weighed master batch from each dye pack and settle each shade. CSI publishes no dosage per kg, so the master-batch grams per kilo you record become your colour specification.
4
Gate four: wick. With wax, oil and colour fixed, test Eco C1 against Eco C2 in each design, and braid from the roll where you need to thread through a mould tip. Every test burn sits on a heat-resistant plate under your eye, and any piece that smokes or flares is put out and noted.
5
Gate five: shipping. If you sell online, send one finished, packaged piece of each design through a real courier and back, and compare it with one kept at home.
A scent passes gate two but changes the colour at gate three. Some oils tint wax. Either adjust the shade for that scent, record it separately, or pair that oil with a colour that hides the change.
A design passes everything except the wick. Sell it as décor-first with a clear label, or change the design so its core is more even. Do not ship a burnable candle that failed its burn test.

How many pieces the kit makes

Plan the pours before you start so the kit is not used up in gate one. Three designs poured unscented in two waxes, two pieces each, is twelve pieces. Four scents in the winning wax, three pieces each in the lotus, is twelve more. Colour and wick tests reuse pieces from the fragrance gate where possible, by re-melting rejects into master batches. In practice, a kilo of each wax covers the early gates for a three-design collection, and the remaining Pillar Wax carries the later ones. If you run short, buy another 1 kg pack; it costs the same per kg as the 10 kg pack.

Narrow the collection as you go

Expect some combinations to drop out at every gate, and treat that as the kit doing its job. A collection that starts as three designs in four scents and two colours might end as two designs in three scents and one colour, and that smaller range is the one worth launching. It is easier to add a fourth scent in six months, once the first three are selling, than to clear unsold stock of a combination that only half worked. Write down why each one dropped out, because the same reason will apply to future designs.

Costing one collection piece

Once gates one to four are passed, cost each piece. Take the lotus in Soy Pillar Wax at 5% British Rose with an Eco C1 wick. The reader weighs the lotus cavity and finds about 80 g, their own figure. At 5% that is 4 g oil and 76 g wax.

Cost build-up
One 80 g lotus at 5% British Rose
Item Working Cost
Soy Pillar Wax 76 g × ₹0.60 ₹45.60
British Rose 4 g × (₹3,068.00 ÷ 1,000 g) = 4 × ₹3.068 ₹12.27
Eco C1 wick One wick ₹5.90
Total materials ₹45.60 + ₹12.27 + ₹5.90 ₹63.77

That excludes the mould, dye, packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. The oil is costed at the 1 kg price you would pay once validated, not the 15 g test price, which works out higher per gram. Run the same build-up for each design and scent, and keep the sheet with the test results: it becomes your product specification.

Buy this once validated

Now order wholesale, but only for the combinations that passed. The table is an example for a collection where Soy Pillar Wax, British Rose, Sandalwood and Eco C1 all passed.

Shopping list
Buy this to test / buy this once validated
Material Test pack Validated pack
Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg, ₹600.00 10 kg, ₹6,000.00
British Rose 15 g, ₹94.40 1 kg, ₹3,068.00
Sandalwood 15 g, ₹93.22 1 kg, ₹5,026.80
Eco C1 wicks 20, ₹118.00 500, ₹2,950.00
Moulds One of each design Count from your measured cycle time
Dye chips One pack per colour Packs by master batches needed

Two honest points. Pillar Wax costs the same per kg at every pack size, so the 10 kg pack is about convenience, not a cheaper rate; buy it when your volume needs it. And for quantities beyond the listed packs, no 25 kg or 100 kg pack is listed, so ask for a quote on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926). Order extra moulds only after timing a real production cycle, because the number you need depends on how many times each cavity can be filled in a day, not on how many designs you have.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
