I Wicked Down to Increase Burn Time but Now My Hot Throw Is Weak and Wax Remains Around the Jar — How Do I Increase Candle Life Without Under-Wicking?
Aktie
What is the exchange rate? In the bracket below, going from an 11 mm wall to a 3 mm wall cost 6.5 hours across 8 mm — about 0.81 hours per millimetre. Your figures will differ. The point is that you can measure the trade instead of guessing at it.
So how do I add hours honestly? Three levers, in this order: more grams in the same footprint (a deeper jar of the same diameter), a diameter that suits the wick you can actually buy, and only then the smallest wick candidate that still clears your wall. Care instructions are a fourth thing and not a formulation gain.
Can I just go one wick size down? Often there is nowhere to go. CSI lists two Eco cotton sizes (Thin C1 and Thick C2), plus cotton braided and wooden wicks. Below C1 there is no rung, so "one size down" is not a move you can make — you change type, count or jar.
What wicking down actually did
A smaller wick draws less molten wax per hour, so the clock runs longer. Nothing else about the candle improved, and two things got worse at once. The first is the wall — wax outside the pool is not fuel, so the candle's usable fill dropped while its label weight stayed the same. The second is throw, and the reason is geometric rather than mysterious.
Fragrance leaves a candle from the surface of the molten pool. That surface is a disc, and the area of a disc goes with the square of its radius. So a pool that looks like it covers two thirds of the jar covers much less than that. In the worked example, a 22 mm pool radius in a 33 mm jar is 44% of the available surface — less than half. Push the pool out to 30 mm and the same jar gives you 83%. That is not a throw measurement and we are not claiming a percentage change in throw; it is arithmetic about how much surface exists. But it is the mechanism behind the complaint in the title.
| Pool radius | Unmelted wall | Share of the jar's surface the pool covers | What the maker sees |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 mm | 11 mm | 44% | An obvious collar; throw fades after the first sessions |
| 27 mm | 6 mm | 67% | A visible rim; throw present but inconsistent |
| 29 mm | 4 mm | 77% | A thin rim many buyers forgive |
| 30 mm | 3 mm | 83% | Essentially a full pool to the eye |
| 32 mm | 1 mm | 94% | Edge to edge |
Measuring the wall in millimetres
"Some wax remains around the jar" is not a measurement, and it cannot be compared across candidates. A millimetre figure can. Take it the same way every time and it becomes the most useful single number in a slow-burn investigation, because it tells you directly how far short of the glass your wick is falling.
The exchange rate: hours per millimetre
Once wall and hours sit in the same table you can price the trade. Every candidate below is the same 150 g fill of Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at 8% with Woody Oud, in the same jar, cured together, burned on the same schedule. Only the wick changed.
| Candidate | Wall | Pool area share | Burn rate | Residue | Stranded value | Usable hours | Hours per mm cleared vs C1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C1 single (where you are now) | 11 mm | 44% | 3.4 g/h | 34 g | ₹32.66 | 34.1 | — |
| Performance Wooden single | 6 mm | 67% | 4.4 g/h | 19 g | ₹18.25 | 29.8 | 0.87 h/mm |
| Cotton Braided single | 4 mm | 77% | 4.9 g/h | 13 g | ₹12.49 | 28.0 | 0.88 h/mm |
| Eco C2 single | 3 mm | 83% | 5.1 g/h | 9 g | ₹8.64 | 27.6 | 0.81 h/mm |
| Eco C1 double | 1 mm | 94% | 6.0 g/h | 7 g | ₹6.72 | 23.8 | 1.03 h/mm |
Three readings from that table. First, the exchange rate is remarkably steady at roughly 0.8 to 1.0 hours per millimetre across four quite different candidates, which is what you would expect if hours are mostly a function of how much surface is molten. Second, the candidate that clears the most wall gives up the most hours — there is no free lunch inside the wick column. Third, and most usefully: the hours you lose clearing the wall are smaller than the wax you recover. Going from C1 to C2 cost 6.5 hours and converted 25 g of stranded wax and oil (₹24.02 of material) back into usable fuel.
Four ways to add hours that are not the wick
If 0.8 hours per millimetre is the price of clearing the wall, the sensible response is to get your hours from somewhere that does not charge in wall thickness. There are four places to look, and the first two are almost always better value than anything in the wick column.
| Lever | The arithmetic | What it costs | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| More grams, same diameter | At a constant 3.4 g/h, +10 g = +2.9 hours. A 130 g fill in a 6 cm jar against a 120 g fill in the same diameter: 36.5 h against 33.5 h | A deeper vessel. The Shot Glass Jar states 130 g fill, 8 cm height, 6 cm diameter at ₹288 for the listed pack; the Amber Shiny jar states 120 gm, 6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height at ₹47.20 each | Depth is not free forever — a very deep jar can weaken a wick further down. Measure the bottom third separately |
| Narrower diameter, same wick | C1's 22 mm pool is a 11 mm wall in a 33 mm jar and about a 2 mm wall in a 28 mm one — 86% pool area instead of 44% | A different jar; ₹47.20 each for the stated 6 cm Amber Shiny | Changing the vessel changes the rate as well as the wall, so the 3.4 g/h figure must be re-measured, not carried over |
| The smallest wick that still clears | Pick the lowest-power candidate whose wall meets your line — in the table, C2 at 3 mm rather than C1 double at 1 mm, keeping 3.8 hours | ₹3.54 to move from C1 to C2; ₹957.80 for a five-candidate bracket in the smallest packs | It is a formulation change, so the burn-time claim and the throw score are retested from scratch |
| Care instructions | Session length and trimming genuinely move total hours in a customer's hands | Printing | This is not a formulation gain and cannot be claimed as burn time. State it as a variable, not a feature |
The first lever deserves emphasis because it is so often overlooked. At a fixed burn rate, hours are directly proportional to usable fill. That makes a deeper jar of the same diameter the only change on this page that adds hours without touching the pool, the throw or the wall. It is also the one lever where carrying your measured rate across is defensible, because the wick is seeing the same diameter and the same wax — all that changed is how long the supply lasts.
What to buy for the retest
Three lines: the wicks to bracket with, a narrower jar to prove the diameter point, and a wax whose page publishes enough numbers to hold the rest of the test still.

The bracket CSI's range actually allows
This is the part most wick advice gets wrong, so here it is plainly. There is no graded ladder of cotton sizes to walk up or down. CSI's wick range is six listings, and only two of them say anything numeric about jar size.
| Wick | Stated size guidance | Listed packs | Per piece | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks · Thin (C1) | None stated | 10 → 1,000 | ₹5.90 flat | The bottom of the cotton range — nothing below it |
| Eco Candle Wicks · Thick (C2) | None stated | 20 → 1,000 (10-pack sold out) | ₹9.44 flat | One step up, and the only cotton step there is |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | "Engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; wick height 10.16 cm | 10 → 1,000 | ₹12 flat | Built for wider jars than the example |
| Performance Wooden Wicks (imported) | None stated; "one pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs" | 10, 50, 100 | ₹59 → ₹47.20 → ₹41.30 | A different burn character, not a size step |
| Eco Candle Wicks Loose | "Designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" | 5 m ₹413 · 10 m ₹708 | Cut to your own height | The only listing with a numeric target diameter |
| Eco Braided Wicks | "The perfect solution for large diameter container jars" — no number | 5 m ₹472 · 10 m ₹826 | Cut to your own height | Wide-jar candidate, cut to length |
So the moves available to you are: up one cotton rung (C1 to C2), across to a different type (wooden, braided), or up in count (two wicks). Down from C1 there is nothing, which is worth knowing before you plan a programme around stepping down. If you are on C1 in a 6.6 cm jar with an 11 mm wall, your bracket is C2 single, wooden single, braided single and C1 double — four candidates, in duplicate, eight jars. If you are on C2 and still walling, cotton has run out and your candidates are count and type. The selection logic by diameter is in best wick for candle making by diameter, the type comparison in cotton wick vs wooden wick, and the eco range in best eco-friendly candle wicks.
The six-jar trade-off test
Here is the test that answers the title in one fortnight. Six jars, two variables, one melt. Four of them bracket the wick in your current diameter; two of them test whether the diameter was the problem all along.
| Jar | Vessel | Wick | Fill | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Current, 33 mm radius | Eco C1 (control) | 150 g | What am I actually shipping? Wall, rate, throw, residue |
| 2 | Current, 33 mm radius | Eco C2 | 150 g | Does one cotton rung clear the wall, and at what cost in hours? |
| 3 | Current, 33 mm radius | Performance Wooden single | 150 g | Does a different wick type behave better at the same wall target? |
| 4 | Current, 33 mm radius | Eco C1 double | 150 g | Does count beat size — and does it stay safe? |
| 5 | Amber Shiny, 6 cm | Eco C1 (unchanged) | 120 g | Was my wall a diameter problem rather than a wick problem? |
| 6 | Shot Glass, 6 cm × 8 cm | Eco C1 (unchanged) | 130 g | Does depth at the same diameter buy hours cleanly? (+10 g = +2.9 h) |
Pour all six from one melt of CSI 468 at 8% so the wax, the oil and the load are identical, follow the page's stated 58–60°C pour, cure them together, and burn them on the same four-hour schedule in the same room. Then fill in the nine-field log. In the worked example, jars 5 and 6 are the interesting ones: the wall collapsed from 11 mm to about 2 mm with no change of wick at all, and jar 6 returned the hours that jar 2 had given up — because it added grams instead of restricting the flame.
One more honest note on the Shot Glass Jar. Its page states a 130 gram fill capacity, 8 cm height and 6 cm diameter at ₹288 for the listed pack — but the title says "Pack of 6" while the body text describes a pack of five, so count what arrives before you build a cost per jar on it. It is a good illustration of why the depth lever needs a scale: the page tells you the capacity, and only your own filled-jar weighing tells you the fill.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Two of the three levers on this page cost us money: a candle that clears its wall uses more of its own fill per hour, and a maker who fixes the diameter buys cheaper jars rather than more wax. We publish it because the alternative — a range of under-wicked candles with weak throw and wax welded to the glass — is how makers lose repeat customers and stop ordering.
Every price, pack and stated specification here is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which is always authoritative. Wick diameters are quoted only where a page states one: Eco Candle Wicks Loose ("2 inch diameters") and Cotton Braided ("exceeding 8 cm", height 10.16 cm). The C1/C2 page states none, and we do not invent one. All walls, pool radii, burn rates, residues, hours and throw scores are a maker's own measurements shown to demonstrate the arithmetic — no CSI wax, wick or jar page publishes a burn time, a burn rate or hours per gram.

Woody Oud Fragrance Oil 15 gm ₹93.22, 50 gm ₹271.40, 100 gm ₹453.12, 500 gm ₹2,265.60 (₹4.5312/g), 1 kg ₹4,531.20. Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid ₹47.20 / pack of 1, ₹236 / pack of 5 — ₹47.20 each; page states 120 gm capacity, 6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height, and its body text inconsistently describes a black jar with a golden lid. Shot Glass Jar ₹288 for the listed pack; page states 130 gram fill capacity, height 8 cm, diameter 6 cm — title says "Pack of 6" while the body text says five, so verify the count before costing per jar. Black Matte Glass Jar ₹354 / pack of 5, ₹708 / pack of 10; page states a fill weight of 200 ml (a volume, not a weight) and no hot-pour ceiling. Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid 500 gm ₹212.40, 700 gm ₹250; page states approximately 10 cm diameter and safe for hot-pour up to 85°C. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599 / 1 kg; stated load 8–13% of total wax weight with 10% recommended. Premium Candle Wicking Needle ₹472; Bamboo Wick Holder ₹118 for a set of 5. Assumptions stated: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle, so a 150 g candle at 8% is 138 g wax + 12 g oil and a 120 g candle at 8% is 110.4 g wax + 9.6 g oil (the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page phrases its range as a share of total wax weight; this series keeps the finished-candle convention); internal radius is taken as the measured inside of the jar at the wax line, not the stated outer diameter; pool area share = (pool radius ÷ internal radius)²; residue is assumed to carry the candle's own 92/8 wax-to-oil split; allow 3–5% wax loss for spills and top-ups as a planning allowance. All walls, pool radii, burn rates, residues, usable hours, throw scores and hours-per-millimetre figures are a maker's own measurements used to demonstrate the arithmetic — no CSI wax, wick or jar page publishes a burn time, a burn rate or hours per gram, and none is estimated here. Stated loads are wax formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
