I'm Starting a Candle Business but Don't Know Which Jar Size Will Sell — Should I Test Several Containers or Standardise One Jar First?
Aktie
Which jar size sells best? We have no sales data by jar size, and it depends on your price point and customer. What we can price is the cost per candle in each container, from ₹94.04 to ₹249.26. See the comparison.
How much do candle jars cost at CSI? White Matte ₹70.80 each (5 for ₹354.00), Salsa 200 ml with lug cap ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100, Yankee 130 ml with cap ₹47.20, golden 85 g tins ₹30.00 each in twelves, Heart velvet jars ₹45.00.
What does standardising one jar save? For 60 candles, one Salsa jar costs ₹1,876.20 in containers; spreading 20 each across three jars costs ₹2,938.40, before the extra labels and wick sizes. See standardise vs spread.
Five containers, costed
CSI's container range includes five that suit a starting brand. Only two publish a fill weight: the Golden Aluminium Tin at 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at 50 g of wax. The White Matte Glass Jar uses this series' 200 g default. The 200 ml Salsa jar and Yankee 130 ml jar are sold by volume, and their wax fill is not published. We use 170 g and 110 g as illustrative placeholders so the maths can run. Do not rely on them. Fill your jar with water to the level you will pour, weigh it, and use that.
| Container | Fill | Unit price, smallest pack | Unit price, largest pack | Lid | Material cost per candle | Per 100 g of candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte Glass Jar | 200 g (series default) | ₹70.80 | ₹70.80 | Not included | ₹249.26 | ₹124.63 |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap | 170 g (illustrative — weigh yours) | ₹40.12 | ₹29.50 | Included | ₹192.70 | ₹113.35 |
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml, clear cap | 110 g (illustrative — weigh yours) | ₹47.20 | ₹47.20 | Included | ₹148.01 | ₹134.55 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin | 85 g (published 85 g fill) | ₹30.00 | ₹30.00 | Tin | ₹109.24 | ₹128.52 |
| Heart Cutout Velvet Jar, Red | 50 g (published 50 g wax capacity) | ₹45.00 | ₹45.00 | Not included | ₹94.04 | ₹188.08 |
Read the last column. Small containers cost more per gram of candle, because the container and wick are fixed costs that do not shrink with the fill. The 50 g Heart jar costs about ₹188.08 per 100 g of candle; the White Matte about ₹124.63. That does not make small candles a bad idea. It means their selling price has to carry a larger share of packaging per gram, which introducing a smaller affordable candle and why a 100 g candle costs more per gram than a 300 g work through.
Lids, caps and pack sizes
Two containers come with a closure: the Salsa jar's golden lug cap and the Yankee jar's clear cap. For the others, a lid is a separate purchase from your own supplier. CSI's data has no lid prices, so as an example only, a lid at ₹25.00 (replace with a real quote) would lift the White Matte candle to ₹274.26. That is the kind of difference a container test should surface before you commit. Material cost here excludes labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST.
Pack sizes matter just as much. The White Matte jar is listed only in fives and the golden tin only in twelves, so their unit price never falls. The Heart velvet jar is ₹45.00 whether you buy one or ten. The Salsa jar is the exception: ₹40.12 each in fives, ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100. That break is only available to a maker who commits to one jar in quantity, which is the practical case for standardising early. Oil works the other way round from containers: for most oils the per-gram price above 100 g is flat, while this one container has a real break at 50.
The container test
A good container test changes one thing at a time. Use one scent in every container, so differences come from the container, not the fragrance. Use two wick options per container, because wick sizing for jar diameters is not published in this data and the right wick for a 50 g heart jar is unlikely to be the right one for a 200 g jar. Ten candles is enough: five containers, two wicks each.
| Item | Quantity | Price | Used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roasted Coconut | 100 g | ₹495.00 | 98.4 g |
| CSI 464 wax | 1 kg + 500 g | ₹767.40 | 1,131.6 g (+5% = 1,188 g) |
| White Matte Glass Jars | 5 | ₹354.00 | 2 |
| 200 ml Salsa jars | 5 | ₹200.60 | 2 |
| Yankee 130 ml jars | 2 | ₹94.40 | 2 |
| Golden tins | 12 | ₹360.00 | 2 |
| Heart velvet jars | 2 | ₹90.00 | 2 |
| Eco Thin C1 + Thick C2 | 10 + 10 | ₹153.40 | 5 + 5 |
| Test total | ₹2,514.80 | Tools assumed owned |
The spare containers are not wasted. Three White Matte jars, three Salsa jars and ten tins remain; whichever container wins, its spares are the first few candles of the launch. Wax is bought as 1 kg plus 500 g of CSI 464, rated up to 10% fragrance by the wax maker, so the 8% load is inside that formulation ceiling. The fill weights for Salsa and Yankee are placeholders; if your weighed fills differ, re-run the oil and wax lines before you order.
Standardise vs spread
Suppose the test is done and you plan a launch of 60 candles. You can put all 60 in one container, or spread them across three sizes, 20 each, "to see which sells". The container bill alone already differs, and that is before the costs that multiply with each size.
| Plan | Containers bought | Container cost | Wick sizes to stock | Label designs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One jar: Salsa 200 ml | 50-pack + 2 × 5-pack = 60 | ₹1,876.20 | 1 | 1 |
| Three jars × 20 | White Matte 4 × 5 · Salsa 4 × 5 · golden tins 2 × 12 | ₹2,938.40 | Up to 3 | 3 |
The single-jar plan reaches the Salsa jar's 50-pack, where the unit price falls from ₹40.12 to ₹29.50, a 26.5% saving that is one of the few genuine pack breaks in CSI's container range. Spread across three sizes, no jar gets past its smallest pack. Part of the gap is simply that the White Matte jar costs more per unit than the other two; the rest is pack price. The per-size costs outside CSI's catalogue multiply too. As an example only, if a label design and first print cost ₹500.00 per jar size (replace with your printer's quote), three sizes cost ₹1,500.00 against ₹500.00 for one. Wick stock multiplies with size, and so does the burn testing each new size needs.
Spreading also muddies the result you wanted. If the 85 g tin outsells the 200 g jar, is that the size, the price, the look, or the fact that it was cheaper? With 20 candles each, you cannot tell. A launch in one jar tells you whether the scents sell. A second size added later, against a known baseline, tells you whether the size sells. How jar size affects cost, shipping weight and margin at ₹499, ₹799 and ₹1,199 is the pricing side of that later decision.
| Pack | Price | Per jar | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | ₹200.60 | ₹40.12 | For testing |
| 50 | ₹1,475.00 | ₹29.50 | Pack break |
| 100 | ₹2,950.00 | ₹29.50 | Same unit price as 50 |
| Pack | Price | Per tin | Fill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | ₹360.00 | ₹30.00 | 85 g (published) |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 200 g candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.00 | ₹6.20 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹247.00 | ₹4.94 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹495.00 | ₹4.95 | 6.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,999.00 | ₹4.00 | 62.50 |
Choosing the one
We have no sales data by jar size, so this page will not tell you which size sells. What it can do is list the questions that decide it, all of which your test answers.
| Question | Why it matters | Where the answer comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Did it burn cleanly with one of the two wicks? | No clean burn, no product | Your test |
| What does a candle cost in it, with your lid, label and box? | Sets your minimum price | The table above + your quotes |
| Does it fit the price you want to charge? | A ₹399 candle and a ₹1,199 candle need different jars | The ₹399 cost ceiling · ₹799 premium |
| Does it reach a pack price at your volume? | Salsa drops to ₹29.50 at 50 | CSI listing |
| Can you ship it safely? | Glass breaks; tins do not | Your courier's advice |
Once the jar is settled, every other purchase gets simpler. The 100-candle bill of materials, buying for 50 candles or the next batch and the ₹10,000 plan all assume one standard jar, because that is what makes a shopping list repeatable.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell all five containers on this page, and we are advising you to launch in one. That is because every extra size costs you wick stock, labels and small-pack prices, not because any one of them is better.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco Thin C1 wicks are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. Salsa, Yankee, golden tin and Heart jar prices and the Eco Thick C2 10-pack are from CSI's container and wick pull of 24–25 September 2026. Fill weights are published for the golden tin (85 g) and Heart jar (50 g of wax) only.
The 170 g Salsa and 110 g Yankee fills are illustrative placeholders, not CSI figures; weigh your own. The 200 g White Matte fill is this series' default. The 8% load, one-week cure and ₹25.00 lid and ₹500.00 label examples are working assumptions or examples to replace. We publish no sales data by jar size.
