Quick answers — read this first
I am at 10% fragrance and the candle is weak — is it the oil or the wax? Audit the load first: measurement, convention and a plain-wax top-up move a nominal 10% between 8.86% and 11.11% without anyone making a mistake. If the 10% is real, the question is whether your oil page allows more than 10%. If it does not, the wax cannot help you and the oil has to change. If it does, a wax stating 13% unlocks it for ₹45.65 more per candle.

Will changing to a 13% wax make my candle smell stronger? Only if the oil also allows more than 10%. Two ceilings apply and the lower one governs: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states up to 13%, but an oil page stating up to 10% still caps you at 10% in either of them. Buying a 13% wax for a 10% oil buys you nothing but a new pour temperature.

Which CSI oils publish a candle load above 10%? On the pages, a small number: Cinnamon Vanilla states up to 13% of total wax weight, Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13%, and Autumn states 7–11%. Most state 6–10%, up to 10% or 8–10%, and a few stop lower — Fresh Strawberries states 6–9% and Mahogany Teakwood 7–9%, which means a 10% batch of those is already past the page.

What does going from 10% to 13% cost? Six more grams of oil on a 200 g candle — ₹27.33 on Cinnamon Vanilla at ₹4.55/g — plus the wax change it requires. 200 g of CSI 464 is ₹101.48; 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹119.80 and 200 g of CSI 468 is ₹130.00. The full move is ₹45.65 a candle, or ₹4,564.88 across a hundred.
The short answer
First, prove the 10%: weigh the wax and the oil separately on a scale that reads to 0.1 g, work the percentage on wax weight rather than finished weight, and count any plain-wax top-up as dilution. A nominal 10% lands anywhere from 8.86% to 11.11% depending on which of those you did.
Then read the oil's ceiling, not the wax's: if your oil page states up to 10% or 6–10%, you are already at the top of it and a new wax changes nothing. Change the oil instead — the ones that publish more are Cinnamon Vanilla at up to 13%, Japanese Cherry Blossom at 6–13% and Autumn at 7–11%.
Change the wax only when the oil allows more: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo states up to 13% with 8% as a starting point, 10% recommended and thorough test burning at 13%; CSI 468 at ₹650.00 also states up to 13%. Expect to re-test the wick and the pour temperature when you move.

Five arithmetic routes to a load that is not the 10% you wrote on the recipe card, on a candle intended as 200 g of wax with 20 g of oil. Four of the five are measurement and convention rather than anybody's error, and none of them is a property of any fragrance oil. The 9.00% row is an illustrative figure for the spread between the first and last jar poured from an under-stirred pitcher, not a measured value.
Straight answer
At 10% fragrance and still weak — should you change the oil or the wax?
Answer three questions in order and the fork resolves itself. One: is the 10% real? The same recipe card produces effective loads from 8.86% to 11.11% depending on whether you took the percentage on wax weight or finished weight, whether your scale reads to 1 g or 0.1 g, whether the pitcher was stirred before the last jar, and whether you topped up sink holes with unscented wax afterwards. A 20 g dose read as 20 on a 1 g scale and then diluted by a 20 g plain-wax top-up is 8.86% in the finished candle. Fix the measurement before you spend anything, because three of those four cost nothing. Two: does your oil's own page allow more than 10%? Two ceilings apply — your wax grade's stated maximum and the oil page's stated range — and the lower governs. Most CSI oil pages state 6–10%, up to 10% or 8–10%; a handful state less, such as Fresh Strawberries at 6–9% and Mahogany Teakwood at 7–9%, in which case a 10% batch is already outside the page and going higher is the wrong direction entirely. If your oil caps at 10%, no wax on the shelf can give you more of it: the wax cannot override the oil, and the change you need is a different oil. Three: if the oil does allow more, can your wax hold it? Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%, so at 10% you are at its ceiling and have no headroom left in that grade. And the honest fourth answer: if the load is genuinely 10%, the melt pool reaches the glass, and the candle has had fourteen days, then this is not a load problem at all and neither purchase will fix it — the composition is what it is, and a different oil is the only change that will register.

Shop candle wax
You have done the obvious thing. You raised the load to 10%, waited, burned a jar, and it is still not filling the room. So the next purchase is either a different fragrance oil or a different wax, and they cost different amounts of money and different amounts of time. This page decides which, in the order that costs least: prove the load, read the oil's ceiling, read the wax's ceiling, then spend.

First: is your 10% actually 10%?

Four of the five rows in the diagram above are arithmetic, not anybody's mistake. Together they move a nominal 10% by more than two full percentage points.

Before you accept the premise of your own question, audit it. In this series a load is a percentage of wax weight, because that is how CSI's product pages state it — a 200 g candle at 10% is 200 g of wax plus 20 g of oil, 220 g in the jar. Here are the five things that quietly move that number, in the order they occur in a pour.

1. The convention: wax weight or finished weight

If you want a 200 g finished candle and you take 10% of 200 g, you get 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax — which is 11.11% of wax weight, not 10%. If instead you weigh 200 g of wax and add 10% of that, you have 20 g of oil in a 220 g candle, which is 9.09% of the finished weight. Neither is wrong, but they are two different candles and they have different relationships to a ceiling. Use the same convention your wax and oil pages use — percentage of wax weight — and write which one you used on the recipe card. A maker working on finished weight against a wax stating a 10% maximum has quietly been at 11.11% of the wax all along, which is a different conversation entirely.

2. The scale

A 1 g resolution kitchen scale reading 20 could be anywhere from 19.5 to 20.4, and that is before drift or a tare error. Half a gram on a 20 g dose is 0.25 percentage points of a 200 g candle — and 2.5 points on a 40 g dose in a votive, which is where this really bites. Weigh oil in grams on a scale that reads to 0.1 g, never in spoons or millilitres, and tare the pitcher rather than doing the subtraction in your head. CSI lists a candle-making weighing scale at ₹354.00, though stock on it is low as of September 2026; any 0.1 g jeweller's or kitchen scale does the same job.

3. The stir, and which jar you poured first

Fragrance oil and molten soy do not stay mixed by themselves. The published process for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is to add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes; Eco Soy CSI 400 states adding at 85°C within an 80–90°C window and stirring gently for two minutes. Skip that and the pitcher is stratified: the jar you poured first and the jar you poured last are not the same candle. If you tested the first jar of an under-stirred batch you may be testing an 8–9% candle while believing you tested 10%. A CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349.00 or Steel Pouring Pitcher at ₹708.00 for the 600 ml makes the two minutes practical rather than aspirational.

4. The plain-wax top-up

This is the one nobody counts. A sink hole around the wick gets topped up with plain melted wax, or a short-filled jar gets levelled from the leftovers of an unscented melt. Add 20 g of unscented wax to a 200 g candle carrying 20 g of oil and the candle is now 8.86%, not 10% — and the top of the candle, which is what burns first and what the customer smells first, is weaker still. Top up with fragranced wax from the same batch, kept warm, or re-level the surface with a heat gun instead of adding wax at all.

5. Losses that are not load errors

Two things feel like losses and are not. Oil left clinging to the pitcher walls reduces the wax and the oil in the same proportion, so the load in the jar is unchanged — you simply poured a smaller candle. And fragrance is not meaningfully lost to evaporation at an 80–90°C add temperature: flash point is a transport and storage property, not the temperature at which a fragrance burns off, and the published flash points on CSI's oils that state one run from 85°C to 206°C. Adding hot enough to be in the wax page's window is correct, not wasteful.

Raising the load again without re-checking the arithmetic. The usual sequence is 8% felt weak, so 10%, and 10% feels weak, so 12% — on a wax and an oil that may both stop at 10%. Past the lower ceiling the wax stops dissolving the oil and you get a greasy film, beads at the top, a guttering flame and a candle that smells no stronger. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% and explicitly tells you to test-burn thoroughly at 13%; CSI 464 states up to 10% and that is the end of that grade. Prove the load, then move the ceiling properly or change the oil.
THE FIVE-LINE RECIPE CARD
Wax grade and wax weight in grams. Oil name and oil weight in grams. Load as a percentage of wax weight, written out. Add temperature, stir minutes, pour temperature. Top-up method. Cure days. Five lines, and it converts every conversation about a weak candle from an argument into a comparison. Without it, you cannot tell whether batch nine differed from batch four in the oil, the wax, the scale or the stir.

The ceiling that decides this is the oil's, not the wax's

A wax that allows 13% does nothing for an oil whose page stops at 10%. That one sentence answers most versions of this question.

Two numbers apply to every candle: the maximum your wax grade's page states, and the range your oil's page states for candles. The lower of the two governs. That is not a compromise or a safety margin, it is simply what the two manufacturers have each said their material will do. Which means the useful question is not which wax holds the most oil, but which of your two ceilings you are currently sitting on.

Read the middle two rows again, because between them they cover most makers asking this question. If your oil states 6–10% and you are at 10%, buying Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo to get access to 13% gives you a wax you cannot legitimately fill. You would be paying ₹18.32 more per 200 g candle — ₹1,832.00 across a hundred — for headroom your oil page does not let you use. That is the single most common way money gets spent on this problem without anything changing.

There is also a case where the answer is neither. If the load is genuinely 10%, the pool reaches the glass within about two hours, and the candle has had fourteen days rather than three, then the load is not what is limiting you. Soy hot throw keeps developing past the 48–72 hours oil pages state as the earliest test point — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself says ideally one to two weeks — and a small melt pool caps your releasing surface no matter what is dissolved in the wax. Check those two before you buy either a wax or an oil, and use the live wick guide by diameter for the pool question, since CSI does not publish a wick size chart per wick.

The CSI principle
The wax sets how much oil can dissolve. The oil sets how much is worth dissolving. Whichever number is smaller is the one you are living with.
At 10% on CSI 464 with a 6–10% oil, both numbers are 10% and there is nothing left to buy but a different oil.

The fork: change the oil, or change the wax

One of these costs a bottle. The other costs a bottle, a process and a wick test.

Change the oil when

Your oil page caps at 10% or below; or it allows more and 12–13% on a 13% wax still reads flat; or the composition is the problem rather than the quantity — an oil weighted to bright top notes with nothing published in the base will not improve much with three more grams of itself. Changing the oil is the cheaper experiment because nothing else in your process moves: same wax, same wick, same pour temperature, same cure, same jar. A 20 g dose of Woody Oud at ₹4.53/g is ₹90.62 against ₹91.10 for Cinnamon Vanilla at ₹4.55/g — ₹0.47 a candle less, and you learn something in a fortnight.

If you want to stay in the same scent territory and gain headroom at the same time, the oils that publish more than 10% are the place to look: Cinnamon Vanilla states up to 13% of total wax weight with 8–10% as the suggested starting band, 2.5% vanillin and a 132°C flash point; Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13% with a published intensity guide — 6–8% light and airy, 9–11% balanced, 12–13% rich and pronounced; Autumn states 7–11% with IFRA certification. Those three are the only straightforward way to run a legitimate 11–13% candle at all, and two of them will tone pale wax warmer over time.

Change the wax when

Your oil publishes more than 10% and your wax does not. Then the wax is genuinely the bottleneck and moving is the right call — but price the whole move, not just the flakes. 200 g of CSI 464 is ₹101.48; 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹119.80 and 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is ₹130.00, so the wax line rises by ₹18.32 or ₹28.52 a candle before you add a gram of extra oil.

The process moves too, and this is the part that costs time rather than money. The Chunks page gives a melt of approximately 80–85°C, fragrance at 80–90°C with two minutes of slow stirring and a pour at 75–80°C, with a cure of at least 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks. CSI 468 is a different animal: a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, which is a genuinely different pour to learn, along with a different surface finish and a different burn profile. Both changes mean re-testing your wick, because a wax swap changes how the pool forms even at the same diameter. Budget a fortnight and a round of three jars for that, not an evening.

Changing the oil and the wax in the same batch. If the new candle is better you will not know which purchase to repeat, and if it is worse you will not know which one to undo. It also hides an interaction: a new wax at a new load with a new oil can throw superbly and sweat in a week. Change one variable, cure it fourteen days, burn it in the same room, log it. The four-jar design in the next section exists precisely so that you only pay for this fortnight once.

Cure fourteen days, then burn them in the same room on four eveningsSame room, same fan setting, four hours each, one jar per evening, judged from the doorway twenty minutes after lighting rather than from the sofa. Log strength out of five at 20, 60, 120 and 240 minutes and measure the melt pool at 120. Then read the four together: if B beats A, the wax was doing something other than holding oil; if C beats B, the load was the limit and the wax change was justified; if D beats all of them, you were buying the wrong oil and no amount of it would have helped.

Two things to hold constant that makers routinely forget. Cure every jar for the same number of days — comparing a day-7 jar with a day-21 jar tells you about time, not about wax. And use the same wick in all four, accepting that the wick may be wrong for one of them; the point of the round is not to produce a finished product but to isolate variables. Once you know which direction to go, re-test the wick properly in three jars at the winning recipe.

The last row is the one to notice. Swapping the oil at the same load and the same wax moves the candle cost by ₹0.47 — a rounding error against the ₹45.65 the full wax-and-load move costs, and it requires no new pour temperature, no new cure schedule and no wick re-test. That is why the oil change is the first experiment even when the wax change is the eventual answer: it is nearly free to run and it removes the largest unknown.

Scale it and the decision sharpens. A hundred candles at 13% on the Chunks instead of 10% on CSI 464 is ₹4,564.88 more in raw materials, of which ₹2,732.88 is the extra oil and ₹1,832.00 the dearer wax. If that buys a candle your customers describe differently, it is trivially worth it on a product selling above ₹600.00. If it buys a candle nobody notices, it is a permanent margin cut you have to take on every unit you ever pour. The four-jar test costs ₹875.72 once and tells you which of those two you are buying.

One more option that costs nothing to consider: sell a smaller candle. The same fragrance in a smaller room is the cheapest throw improvement available, and a 70 g votive at 10% needs 7 g of oil rather than 20 g. If your 200 g jar in a hall is the problem, a votive in a bathroom may be the product.

What a 13% candle does in an Indian summer

Every extra point of fragrance is a point of something the wax has to keep holding at 40°C in a courier van.

Loads near a wax's stated maximum behave differently in Indian conditions than in the climates most candle-making advice is written for. Soy at 13% is holding as much oil as its manufacturer says it will hold, with no margin — and margin is exactly what a stockroom at 38–40°C in Ahmedabad or Nagpur, or two days in an unventilated delivery van in May, takes away from you. The failure looks like beads of oil on the surface, a greasy film on the glass, a dull or mottled top, and occasionally a wick that will not stay lit. None of that is a fragrance fault; it is a load that was fine in a 24°C test and is not fine at 40°C.

So treat a high load as a seasonal and logistical decision, not only a scent one. If you are pouring for a festive quarter where stock sits in a warehouse through October, or shipping to Rajasthan in May, the sensible number is a point or two below the ceiling even when the pages allow more. If you sell locally, hand to hand, in a Bengaluru or Pune winter, you have more room. Test a high-load candle at the temperature it will actually live at: leave one jar in the hottest place in your house for a week before you decide the recipe works.

Monsoon adds a second problem that gets blamed on load. Damp air and a humid stockroom leave condensation on glass and can dull a surface, and a candle stored at 30°C and 85% humidity for three weeks is not the candle you poured. Keep finished stock and fragrance oil sealed, cool and out of direct sunlight, and store oil bottles closed rather than half-open on a sunny shelf — the materials that hold a scent through hour three are not the ones you lose first, but you do lose the top notes that made the jar smell right.

Finally, the festive calendar. Diwali 2026 is 8 November 2026. With a 14–21 day cure plus courier time in both directions, festive stock wants to be poured by about mid-October, which means a load and wax decision made in September and a four-jar test started this week rather than in the last week of October. Frequently asked questions

I am using 10% fragrance oil and my candles still smell weak — why?
Three likely reasons in order. The load may not be 10%: taking the percentage on finished weight, a 1 g scale, an unstirred pitcher or a plain-wax top-up move a nominal 10% between 8.86% and 11.11%. The oil may already be at its published ceiling, in which case more of it is not available and the composition has to change. Or the limit may not be the load at all — a melt pool that never reaches the glass and a candle judged at day three both cap throw regardless of what is dissolved in the wax.
Should I change the fragrance oil or the wax?
Read both ceilings. If your oil page states 6–10% or up to 10%, change the oil — no wax can give you more of an oil that stops at 10%. If your oil page states more than 10% and your wax stops at 10%, change the wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 both state up to 13%. The oil swap is the cheaper experiment: on these two oils it moves the candle cost by ₹0.47 against ₹45.65 for the wax-and-load move.
Can I use more than 10% fragrance oil in soy wax?
Only where both pages allow it. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% of total wax weight and tells you to test-burn thoroughly at 13%, and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 also states up to 13% — but the oil page must state more than 10% as well, and most do not. Cinnamon Vanilla states up to 13%, Japanese Cherry Blossom 6–13% and Autumn 7–11%. The lower of the two numbers always governs.
How much does going from 10% to 13% cost per candle?
On a 200 g candle it is six more grams of oil — ₹27.33 on Cinnamon Vanilla at ₹4.55/g — plus the wax you have to move to in order to use it. 200 g of CSI 464 is ₹101.48 against ₹119.80 for the Chunks, so the complete move is ₹45.65 a candle, ₹4,564.88 across a hundred. Of that, ₹2,732.88 is the extra fragrance and ₹1,832.00 the dearer wax.
Is 10% of wax weight the same as 10% of the finished candle?
No, and the gap matters when you are near a ceiling. 200 g of wax plus 20 g of oil is 10% of wax weight and 9.09% of the 220 g finished candle. If you instead aim for a 200 g finished candle and put in 20 g of oil, you are using 180 g of wax and the load is 11.11% of wax weight — above a grade that states 10%. CSI's pages state loads as a percentage of total wax weight, so use that convention and write it on the recipe card.
Will a coconut soy wax throw better than soy at the same load?
The pages make throw claims for several grades, so treat that as a claim to test rather than a settled ranking: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states hot and cold throw along with an ultra-smooth finish and up to 13% load, and CSI 464 states strong cold and hot throw at up to 10%. What is certain is the arithmetic: 468 is ₹130.00 per 200 g against ₹101.48, its melting point is 50–53°C with a 58–60°C pour rather than the higher soy window, and any wax change means re-testing your wick. Run it as jar B in a four-jar round rather than switching a whole range on a page claim.
