Fragrance Load · Weak Candle Triage
Raising the load is the most expensive fix for a weak candle and often not the right one. Before you spend another 8 g of oil on every jar, check five things that cost nothing: whether your 6% was really 6%, whether the candle had cured, whether the pool reached the glass, where you smelled it, and whether the wick was doing its job. Then step up by two points, not four.
6 → 8, not 6 → 10
after the free checks, step the load one rung at a time · each 2-point step adds 4 g of oil to a 200 g candle
Quick answers — read this first
Should I jump from 6% to 10% fragrance? Not first. Rule out the free causes — load maths, cure, melt pool, room — then try one wick size up, then step to 8%. Go to 10% only if 8% still falls short in a fair test.

Why does my 6% candle smell weak? Commonly: the load was really lower (12 g in 200 g of wax is 5.66%), it was tested before it cured, the pool never reached the glass, the room was large or draughty, or the wick is under-sized. Oil strength is only one of the causes.

What does going from 6% to 10% cost? In a 200 g candle, 8 g more oil. With Fresh Strawberries at its 1 kg rate that is ₹28.32 a candle, ₹3,398.40 a month at 120 candles. Stepping to 8% costs half that.

What is the maximum fragrance load for Natural Soy Pearl Wax? No ceiling is published for it in our data. Check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp before testing above 10%. The 6–10% range here is a labelled test range, not a spec.
The short answer
Short answer: Troubleshoot first. Most weak candles are a cure, pool, wick or maths problem before they are a load problem.
Order: 1 maths · 2 cure · 3 pool · 4 room and nose · 5 wick up · 6 load to 8% · then 10% if needed.
Cost: 6→8% adds ₹14.16 per 200 g candle; 6→10% adds ₹28.32 (Fresh Strawberries, 1 kg rate).
A weak 6% candle: check in this order, cheapest first 1 Is the 6% really 6%? weigh against the finished 200 g ₹0 2 Is the candle cured? same-age comparison, labelled checkpoints ₹0 3 Does the pool reach the glass? measure at 1 h, 2 h, 3 h ₹0 4 Room, draught, tired nose? same room, rest between smells ₹0 5 Wick one size up at 6% Thin C1 → Thick C2 +₹3.54 a candle 6 Step load to 8%, not 10% then 10% only if 8% falls short +₹14.16 a candle
Six checks in order of cost. The first four are free and use the candles you already have. The fifth adds the price difference between an Eco Thin C1 and a Thick C2 wick. The sixth adds oil to every candle you will ever pour. Work down the ladder and stop at the first rung that fixes the candle.
Straight answer
My candle smells weak at 6% — should I immediately increase it to 10% or troubleshoot the wick and wax first?
Troubleshoot first. Raising the load is the most expensive fix, because it adds oil to every candle you pour from now on, and it is often not the cause. Work through the checks in order of cost. 1. Maths: was the 6% a share of the finished weight? 12 g into 200 g of wax is only 5.66% (the base convention). 2. Cure: compare candles at the same labelled checkpoint, not one poured yesterday. 3. Pool: if the melt pool does not reach the glass within a few hours, the candle cannot release its scent from the full surface. 4. Room and nose: a large or draughty room and a tired nose both read as “weak”. 5. Wick: try one size up at the same 6%. Only then 6. step the load to 8%, and to 10% only if 8% still falls short in a fair test. Jumping straight to 10% can even make things worse (I Tested My Fragrance at 6%, 8% and 10% in Soy Wax but the 8% Candle Smells Stronger than the 10% Candle — Why Can Adding More Fragrance Reduce Performance?). The jump also costs: with Fresh Strawberries at its 1 kg rate, 6% → 10% adds ₹28.32 to every 200 g candle — ₹3,398.40 a month at 120 candles. And Natural Soy Pearl Wax, the wax in this example, has no published ceiling in our data, so ask before you go above 10%.
One line: Four free checks, one cheap wick swap, then two points of oil — in that order.
The staged test on this page is Fresh Strawberries in Natural Soy Pearl Wax: twelve 200 g candles that test the wick before the load. Two 100 g bottles (₹755.20) and three 1 kg bags of wax (₹1,350.00) cover it with a 5% allowance.

The free checks

A weak candle is a symptom. Oil strength is one possible cause among several, and it is the one that costs money to change.

The first four checks use the candles you already have. They take a day or two of observation and no purchase. Skipping them is how makers end up with a 10% candle that still smells weak, because the problem was never the load.

General candle-making practice · no CSI measurements
Free checks for a weak 6% candle
Check What to look for If this is the cause
Load maths Did you weigh 12 g oil + 188 g wax, or 12 g into 200 g wax (5.66%)? Re-pour at a true 6% before judging
Cure age Was it tested within a day or two of pouring? Re-test at a labelled checkpoint (e.g. 7 or 14 days) — My Candle Smells Weak One Day After Pouring but Much Stronger After Two Weeks — Why Does Curing Affect Fragrance Performance?
Melt pool At 2–3 h, does the liquid pool reach the glass? How deep? Wick is likely under-sized for the jar — go to the wick step
Room Large room, open windows, ceiling fan, AC? Re-test in a smaller, still room — My Candle Fills a Small Bedroom but Disappears in a Large Living Room — How Should Room Size Influence How I Judge Hot Throw?
Your nose Did you smell it after an hour in the same room, or after other candles? Leave and re-enter; ask someone who has not been in the room — My Candle Smells Strong for the First Hour and Then I Stop Noticing It — How Do I Distinguish Fragrance Fatigue from Genuinely Weak Hot Throw?
Comparison Is “weak” compared with a commercial candle of unknown load and wax? Compare against your own candles, blind

The melt pool check is the one that most often points to the real cause. Hot throw comes from the surface of the pool. If a 200 g candle's pool covers two-thirds of the surface after three hours, a third of the wax is not releasing scent at all, and more oil will not change that. A wick that reaches a full pool will. If the pool is full and even, and the candle still reads weak in a fair test, the load becomes a reasonable suspect.

Write the observations down
For each burn, record the date poured, date burned, pool diameter at 1, 2 and 3 hours, pool depth, flame height, any soot, and a 1–5 scent score from the doorway. It takes two minutes and turns “it smells weak” into a pattern you can act on.
The one-day test. A candle poured on Monday and burned on Tuesday is being compared with the memory of a commercial candle that was weeks old. Makers commonly find soy candles smell noticeably different after curing, though no cure time is a spec. Burn the test candle again at a later labelled checkpoint before changing anything.

The cheapest paid fix: the wick

If the pool falls short, the wick is the first thing to change, and it is cheap. On CSI's Eco Candle Wicks, the step from Thin C1 (₹5.90) to Thick C2 (₹9.44) adds ₹3.54 to a candle. Moving from 6% to 8% Fresh Strawberries adds ₹14.16; to 10%, ₹28.32.

200 g candle · Fresh Strawberries at the 1 kg rate ₹3.54/g · Natural Soy Pearl ₹450.00 / kg · jar ₹70.80
What each fix adds to one candle
Fix Change Added cost per candle Material cost per candle
None (6%, Thin C1) — — ₹203.78
Wick up (6%, Thick C2) Thin C1 → Thick C2 ₹3.54 ₹207.32
Load to 8% (Thin C1) +4 g oil ₹14.16 ₹216.14
Load to 10% (Thin C1) +8 g oil ₹28.32 ₹228.50

Two caveats. A bigger wick is not automatically right: too large and the candle can soot, tunnel the other way or overheat the jar. And no table can tell you the correct wick for a jar diameter — that is a burn test. What the table shows is order: if the wick fixes the pool, you have solved the problem for a few rupees, and the load can stay at 6%. If the flame looked fine and the pool was full, skip this step and move to the load.

The CSI principle
Fix the burn before you feed it more oil.
Oil only becomes scent in the air through a working melt pool. A candle with a short pool at 6% will usually still have a short pool at 10%, with more oil trapped in wax that never melts. Make the pool right, then decide whether the oil needs to go up.

Then step the load, one rung

If the wick is right and the candle is still weak, add two points. Not four.

A two-point step is a fair test of whether the oil is the limiting factor. If 8% fixes it, you have saved 4 g of oil on every candle compared with 10%. If 8% helps but not enough, 10% is the next rung — and you now know the direction. Jumping straight to 10% skips that information, and in some wax-oil-wick combinations the higher load performs worse, for reasons set out in I Tested My Fragrance at 6%, 8% and 10% in Soy Wax but the 8% Candle Smells Stronger than the 10% Candle — Why Can Adding More Fragrance Reduce Performance? and I Reduced My Fragrance Load from 10% to 8% and the Candle Suddenly Burns Better — How Can Less Fragrance Sometimes Produce Better Overall Performance?.

8% 16 g 184 g ₹60.42 ₹56.64

Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no published fragrance ceiling in our data. The 6–10% range here is a labelled test range for a wax without a published maximum, not a specification. Before testing above 10%, check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. If you want a wax with a published ceiling and more headroom, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% — though, as My Soy Wax Supplier Says the Wax Can Hold 12% Fragrance Oil — Does That Mean I Should Actually Use 12% for the Strongest Hot Throw? explains, a ceiling is not a target.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The simplest thing for us to say is “use more oil”. We sell it. But if the wick or the cure was the problem, a 10% candle is just a more expensive weak candle. Spend the ₹3.54 on a wick test before you spend ₹28.32 a candle on oil.

What a jump to 10% costs

A single candle hides the cost. A month of production shows it. At 120 candles a month, here is what each rung adds with Fresh Strawberries at its 1 kg rate — one of the oils where the kilo is cheaper per gram than 100 g (₹3.54 against ₹3.78).

120 × 200 g candles a month · oil at ₹3.54/g (1 kg rate)
The monthly cost of each load
Load Oil per month Oil cost per month Extra over 6%
6% 1,440 g ₹5,097.60 ₹0.00
8% 1,920 g ₹6,796.80 ₹1,699.20
10% 2,400 g ₹8,496.00 ₹3,398.40

Going to 10% without cause adds ₹3,398.40 a month, and 960 g more oil to buy and store. If a wick change had fixed it, the same month's extra would have been ₹424.80. That is the whole argument for troubleshooting first, in one pair of numbers.

Four free checks, a three-rupee wick, then two points of oil. Most weak candles are fixed before the oil bill changes.

The staged test, priced

If the free checks do not find the cause, run this twelve-candle test. It tests the wick at 6% first, then the load on the better wick. Pour all twelve in one session so they cure together.

1
Stage 1 — free checks on existing candles Work through the table above. If one of them explains the weak scent, fix that and stop.
2
Stage 2 — wick at 6% Pour six candles at a true 6% (12 g oil + 188 g wax): three on Eco Thin C1, three on Eco Thick C2. Code the bases.
3
Stage 3 — load on the same pour day Pour three at 8% (16 + 184 g) and three at 10% (20 + 180 g). Wick them with the size you expect to win; if you are unsure, pour a few spare jars with each wick. Follow the wax maker's instructions for temperatures.
4
Cure together, burn blind Test all candles at the same labelled checkpoint. Burn in rotation in the same room, measure the pool at 1, 2 and 3 hours, and score scent 1–5 from the doorway.
5
Decide in order If Thick C2 at 6% reaches a full pool and scores well, keep 6%. If not, choose the lowest load that scores well with a clean flame. My Candle Smells Strong at 10% Fragrance Load but the Wick Struggles — How Do I Determine Whether Reducing Fragrance or Increasing Wick Size Is the Better Solution? covers the case where 10% smells strong but the wick struggles.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. “Add more oil” is the answer that sells the most oil. This page puts it sixth, behind four free checks and a wick swap, because that is the order that fixes most weak candles.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are from this series' catalogue (Thin C1 and jars verified 10 September 2026; Thick C2 10-pack per the 25 September pull). Every rupee and gram figure is arithmetic on those prices.

The troubleshooting order reflects general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements; we publish no throw, cure or dosage data for any oil. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no published fragrance ceiling in our data. For the wax maker's stated maximum, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my soy candle not smell when burning?
Common causes are an under-sized wick (the pool never reaches the glass), testing before the candle has cured, a large or draughty room, fragrance fatigue, or a load lower than you think. Check those before adding oil.
Should I increase fragrance oil if my candle is weak?
Only after the free checks and a wick test. Then step up two points (6% to 8%), not four. More oil does not fix a short melt pool.
Is 6% fragrance load enough for a candle?
It can be, depending on the oil, wax, wick and jar. Many makers test 6–10%. Decide on a fair, blind test at equal cure, not on one early burn.
Can the wick make a candle smell weak?
Yes, in general practice. A wick too small for the jar gives a narrow pool, so less surface releases scent. Try one size up at the same load and compare pools.
How much does it cost to increase fragrance load from 6% to 10%?
8 g more oil per 200 g candle. With Fresh Strawberries at ₹3.54 a gram, ₹28.32 a candle, or ₹3,398.40 a month at 120 candles.
What is the fragrance load for Natural Soy Pearl Wax?
No maximum is published for it in our data. Check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. Use 6–10% as a labelled test range.
