Temperature drift · holding time
Hold time is a variable your small test never measured. A simple ladder of retained candles tells you whether it matters for each oil.
4 rungs
retained candles at 0, 1, 2 and 3 hours reveal any hold-time effect
Quick answers — read this first
Can long holding change a candle? Yes. Lighter, more volatile parts of a fragrance can leave a warm, open surface over time, and some oils warm in colour. Whether it matters for your oil must be tested.

How do I test it? Pour three retained candles at 0, 1, 2 and 3 hours of hold from one batch, cure together and rank blind, beside a fresh 1 kg control.

What if later candles are weaker? Shorten the scented hold, for example by holding wax unscented and scenting in portions. Do not raise the fragrance load.

Are all oils equally affected? Unlikely. Citrus Lemon's page notes volatile top notes, so test per fragrance family and set hold limits per family.
The short answer
Direct answer: Yes, prolonged heat can change a scented candle, especially bright, volatile oils. Your 1 kg test never measured it, so test before assuming.
Test: A hold-time ladder: retained candles at fixed hold times from one batch, cured together and ranked blind against a fresh control.
Control: A validated maximum scented hold per fragrance family, portion scenting where needed, lowest workable hold temperature and lid on.

Straight answer
My 1 Kg Batch Has Very Little Holding Time but My 25 Kg Batch Stays Melted for Hours — Can Prolonged Heat Exposure Affect the Finished Candle?
It can, and your 1 kg test never measured it, because small batches are poured within minutes. In a long hold, the lighter, more volatile parts of a fragrance can leave a warm open surface, and some oils warm in colour. Whether that changes your candles depends on the oil, temperature and time. Test it with a hold-time ladder: retain three candles at 0, 1, 2 and 3 hours from one batch, cure them together and rank them blind beside a fresh 1 kg control. If the ladder slopes, shorten the scented hold, for example by scenting in portions, rather than raising the load.
One line: hold time is new at scale, so measure it with a ladder and shorten scented holds if it matters.
Citrus Lemon's page notes that citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, which makes it the natural first oil for a hold-time ladder.

Your test never measured the thing production now does

Your 1 kg test approved the formula for minutes of heat. Production is asking it to survive hours.

A 1 kg batch is usually poured within minutes of the oil going in. The approved candle therefore tells you how the formula behaves with almost no holding time. A 25 kg batch can stay melted and scented for two or three hours while it is poured. That holding time is a new variable, introduced by scale, that your test never covered. So the honest answer to the title is: yes, prolonged heat exposure can affect the finished candle, and you do not yet know whether it affects yours.

What changes during a long hold is fairly well understood in principle. Fragrance oils are blends of materials with different volatility. The lighter, brighter parts of a blend can leave an open, warm surface over time, and they leave faster the warmer the wax and the larger the exposed surface. Some oils also warm in colour; the Dark Vanilla page, for instance, says its vanillin will yellow white or light wax, and states that this does not affect performance. Wax held unscented is generally a much lower concern than wax held with oil in it.

What you cannot do is predict the size of the effect for your oil, your temperature and your hold time from a general rule. That has to be tested, and it is cheaper to test than to guess.

Worked example: 25 kg of Citrus Lemon held for three hours

The batch is 25 kg of scented wax at 8% of total weight: 23 kg of CSI 464 and 2 kg of Citrus Lemon, for 125 candles of 200 g before losses. The wax costs 23 × ₹507.40 = ₹11,670.20. The oil is two 1 kg bottles at ₹2,832.00 each, ₹5,664.00. That is ₹17,334.20 of wax and oil, about ₹138.67 per candle (₹17,334.20 ÷ 125). CSI's largest listed melter is the 20 kg model, so a 25 kg batch is either split across vessels or held in a larger vessel of your own; either way, weigh one real fill.

Citrus Lemon's page states that citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, and advises the full 48–72 h cure and the upper end of the load range. If any oil in your range is sensitive to a long hold, a citrus like this is where you should expect to see it first. A warm, woody oil held the same way may show no difference at all. That contrast is exactly why the test should be run per fragrance family, not once for the whole range.

Test it with a hold-time ladder

The cleanest test uses the production batch itself. Pour a small set of candles at fixed points in the hold and compare them after the same cure. The only thing that changes between the sets is how long the wax had been held.

Hold-time ladder
Retained candles pulled from one scented batch at fixed hold times
Rung Time since oil added Candles retained Wax temperature, own thermometer Blind rank after cure
0 Within 10 minutes 3 Record Record
1 1 hour 3 Record Record
2 2 hours 3 Record Record
3 3 hours 3 Record Record

Three candles per rung and hourly rungs are suggested starting points to validate; they are enough to see a trend without holding back much stock. Twelve retained candles out of 125 is under 10% of the batch, and those candles are not lost if they pass: they go back to stock after the comparison.

1
Label every retained candle.Rung number, time poured and batch number on the base, so no one mixes them up during cure.
2
Keep the hold conditions fixed.Same melter setting, lid position and stirring routine all the way through, recorded on the sheet.
3
Cure them together.Same shelf and room, for the Citrus Lemon page's stated 48–72 h, then again at a later point you choose, such as day 7.
4
Rank them blind.Cold throw first, then hot throw in the same room. Two or three people who do not know which rung is which.
5
Add a fresh control.A 1 kg batch from the same lots, poured straight after mixing, is your reference for 'no hold'. If rung 0 matches it, the ladder is trustworthy.

Hold temperature is the second dial

Time is only half of exposure. The same three hours at a gentle hold temperature and at a much hotter one are not the same test. If the ladder slopes, run it once more with the hold set lower, still inside a range where the wax stays pourable, and checked with your own thermometer at every rung. A slope that flattens at the lower hold tells you temperature, not time alone, was driving the loss, and the fix may be as simple as a lower setting. A slope that stays tells you time is the main factor and the workflow has to change. Either way, you have learned something about your oil that no general rule could have told you, and you have learned it from candles you can still sell if they pass.

Read the ladder, not a single rung
A steady slope from rung 0 to rung 3 means hold time matters for this oil. A flat line means it does not. A single odd rung usually means something else happened at that moment, such as a refill or a lid left open.

If the ladder shows a slope: change the workflow, not the formula

A slope tells you to shorten how long scented wax is held. It does not tell you to raise the load. More oil in a batch that loses scent with time still loses scent with time; you just pay more for it.

The most effective change is to hold the wax unscented and scent it in portions. With 25 kg of scented output, five portions of 5 kg each would be 4.6 kg of wax and 400 g of Citrus Lemon apiece. Each portion is scented, stirred, poured and finished before the next one is started, so no candle sees more than the hold time of one portion. The cost is more weighing: five weighings of 400 g instead of one of 2 kg, which needs a scale you trust at that size and a sheet that tracks each portion.

Workflow choice
Two ways to run the same 25 kg batch
One scented batch Five scented portions
Oil weighings 1 × 2 kg 5 × 400 g
Longest scented hold The whole run About one fifth of the run
Risk if a weighing is wrong Whole batch One portion
Extra work None Four more weigh-and-stir cycles

What to do with candles already made from long holds

Sort by pour time. If jars were numbered or trays dated, separate the candles poured in the last part of the hold.
Compare, then decide. Burn a late candle beside an early one after full cure, in the same room, never unattended. Stop any test that smokes or flares.
Release if they match. No difference means holding did not matter at those conditions, and the stock is fine.
Downgrade honestly if they do not. Weaker but sound candles can go to samples or a lower-priced line. Do not add oil to them.

The controls that follow

Record the time the oil went in and the time of the last pour on every batch sheet. Set a maximum scented hold time for each fragrance family from its ladder, labelled as validated for that oil, wax and temperature. Hold at the lowest temperature that keeps the wax pourable and inside your pour window, checked with a separate thermometer, since the imported melter's display carries a stated ±10°C deviation. Keep the lid on between draws. Never let a long hold creep up to the melter's maximum setting, and keep the melter on its own socket through a long day. When a new oil joins the range, it earns its hold limit through a ladder, not by assumption.

Argue against interest
Do not fix a hold-time loss with more oil.
A batch that loses scent with time still loses it at a higher load, and you pay for every extra gram. Shorten the scented hold instead.
Your test approved minutes of heat. Production has to earn its hours.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general process physics from what CSI's own product pages state, and labels every mixing time, temperature window, hold limit, loss allowance or sample count as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from September 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as the scale's capacity or the thermometer's range — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Does keeping scented wax hot for hours reduce fragrance?
It can, especially for bright, volatile oils such as citrus, whose lighter components leave a warm open surface over time. Test your own oil with a hold-time ladder before assuming.
How long can scented candle wax stay in a melter?
There is no universal figure. Run a ladder of retained candles at hourly hold points, and set a maximum hold per fragrance family from the result, labelled as validated. Hold at the lowest pourable temperature to make the most of that limit.
Is it better to keep wax unscented until I need it?
For long runs, often yes. Holding unscented wax and scenting in portions means no candle sees more than one portion's hold time. It adds weighing work, so check your scale before relying on it for the smaller oil amounts.
Can heat change the colour of candle wax with fragrance?
Some oils warm in colour. The Dark Vanilla page, for example, says its vanillin will yellow white or light wax and that this does not affect performance. Treat any colour change as a separate question from scent and test both.
Why does my small test candle smell stronger than production?
One reason is hold time: the test was poured within minutes, while production candles may sit in heated wax for hours. A hold-time ladder shows whether that explains it. Retained candles from early and late in the run will tell you.
Should I increase fragrance load if large batches smell weaker?
Not until you know why. If the cause is hold time or mixing, more oil costs more and still leaves the late candles weaker than the early ones. Find the cause with a controlled test first.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%; a 25 kg batch at 8% = 23 kg wax + 2 kg oil). Melted soy wax is taken as roughly 0.9 g per ml for volume conversions, so the melter's stated 9.5 litres is about 8.5 kg — weigh one real fill.
