Wax and oil scale with the candle. Jars, wicks, lids, labels and boxes do not. That single fact explains every small-candle costing.

Cost per candle · Size and cost per gram
A 100 g candle is not a third of a 300 g candle. It has the same wick, a jar that costs about half as much rather than a third, the same label and a box nearly as big. Only the wax and oil shrink, so every gram of a small candle carries more fixed cost.
₹1.69/g
cost per gram of a 100 g candle in a Yankee 130 ml jar with packaging, against ₹1.44/g for a 300 g candle · CSI prices plus labelled examples
Quick answers — read this first
Is it normal for a 100 g candle to cost more per gram than a 300 g one? Yes. In our worked comparison the 100 g candle costs ₹1.69 a gram and the 300 g candle ₹1.44, about 1.2 times as much. Oil and wax cost the same per gram at any size; the fixed items do not.

Which costs don't scale? The wick, the container, the lid, the label and the box. On the 100 g candle they are ₹79.10, 46.8% of its cost. On the 300 g candle they are ₹160.90, only 37.4%.

What is the lowest cost per gram possible? The oil-and-wax floor: ₹0.90 a gram for 8% Lavender in CSI 464. Every candle sits above it by its fixed cost ÷ its fill weight. See the formula.

How should I price small candles? At a higher price per gram than large ones. To keep a 60% margin on materials and packaging, the 100 g candle needs at least ₹422.45 and the 300 g ₹1,076.35. Pricing by size.
The short answer
Why: Cost per gram = oil-and-wax cost per gram (₹0.90) + fixed cost per candle ÷ fill weight. Fixed cost barely changes with size, so dividing it by fewer grams raises the per-gram figure.
Worked range: 85 g ₹1.59/g · 100 g ₹1.69/g · 160 g ₹1.37/g · 200 g ₹1.54/g · 300 g ₹1.44/g. Lavender at 8% in CSI 464; containers at CSI prices; lid, label and box partly examples.
What to do: Price per gram higher on small sizes, cut fixed costs on small candles first (jars with caps, smaller boxes), and do not judge a small candle by the large candle's per-gram price. The affordable-candle post tests a small candle's viability.
Cost per gram of finished candle falls as the fill rises — because fixed costs are shared floor: oil + wax only, ₹0.90/g 85 g · ₹1.59/g100 g · ₹1.69/g160 g · ₹1.37/g200 g · ₹1.54/g300 g · ₹1.44/g fill weight of the candle (g) Grey line: same ₹127.70 of fixed cost at every size. Dots: the five worked containers. Lids, labels and boxes are partly example figures.
The dashed line is the floor: oil and wax alone cost ₹0.90 per gram of candle at any size. The grey curve adds the same ₹127.70 of fixed cost (White Matte jar, wick, example lid, label and box) spread over a growing fill. The dots are the five worked containers; they do not all sit on the curve because each container carries its own fixed cost. Fills for the Yankee and Salsa jars are illustrative, and the 300 g jar is an example, not a CSI listing.
Straight answer
My 100 g candle has a higher cost per gram than my 300 g candle — is that normal when jar, wick and packaging costs don't scale proportionally?
Yes, completely normal, and it is exactly the reason you give. Split the candle's cost into two parts. Variable cost — oil and wax — scales with the fill: at 8% Lavender in CSI 464 it is ₹0.90 per gram at any size. Fixed cost — wick, container, lid, label and box — is paid once per candle and barely changes with size. So cost per gram = ₹0.90 + fixed cost ÷ fill weight. A 100 g candle in a Yankee 130 ml jar carries ₹79.10 of fixed cost over 100 g, so it costs ₹1.69 a gram. A 300 g candle in an example 300 g jar carries ₹160.90 over 300 g: ₹1.44 a gram. The small candle is about 1.2 times dearer per gram, and nothing is wrong with your costing. What it means is that small candles must be priced at a higher price per gram, and that cutting fixed cost matters most on your smallest size. Lid, label and box figures here are partly examples.
One line: small candles share their fixed costs with fewer grams — price them per gram accordingly.
Small containers that include their lid remove one fixed cost entirely. The Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap is ₹47.20 each, and the 200 ml Salsa jar with golden lug cap ₹200.60 for 5 or ₹2,950.00 for 100. The Golden Aluminium Tin has a published 85 g fill at ₹360.00 for 12.
Buy the Yankee 130 ml jar

The formula behind the curve

Every candle is two costs wearing one label: a cost that grows with the wax, and a cost that does not.

Oil and wax are bought by weight and used by weight, so their cost per gram of finished candle is fixed by the recipe. At an 8% load, each gram of candle holds 0.08 g of Lavender at ₹5.40 a gram (₹0.4320) and 0.92 g of CSI 464 at ₹0.5074 a gram (₹0.4668). Together that is ₹0.8988 per gram of candle, whether the candle weighs 85 g or 300 g. Everything else — the wick, the container, its lid, the label and the box — is counted per candle.

So the cost per gram of any candle is: ₹0.90 + (fixed cost per candle ÷ fill weight). Double the fill and the second part halves. That is the whole explanation. A 100 g candle with ₹79.10 of fixed cost adds ₹0.79 a gram on top of the floor. A 300 g candle with ₹160.90 adds ₹0.54. The floor is identical; the fixed cost per gram is not.

Oil price per gram does not change with candle size — but pack size can
The floor assumes you buy the same oil at the same pack size for every candle. If you buy for small candles in 15 g testers, the oil line rises: Lavender is ₹7.00 a gram at 15 g against ₹5.40 at 100 g. That is a buying decision, not a size effect. Cost every size at the pack you really buy.

Five containers, costed

Here is the same recipe poured into five containers. Four are CSI listings with real prices. Only the golden tin has a published fill weight (85 g); the Yankee and Salsa fills are illustrative, so weigh one of yours filled to your line. The White Matte jar uses this series' 200 g working fill. The 300 g jar is an example, not a CSI listing, included because the question is about 300 g. Lid, label and box figures are examples except where the lid comes with the jar.

Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g (published 85 g fill) ₹76.40 ₹30.00 ₹0.00 (not stated — check listing) ₹28.90 ₹135.30 ₹1.59
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml 100 g (illustrative 100 g — weigh yours) ₹89.88 ₹47.20 ₹0.00 (clear cap included) ₹31.90 ₹168.98 ₹1.69
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar 160 g (illustrative 160 g — weigh yours) ₹143.81 ₹40.12 ₹0.00 (golden lug cap included) ₹35.90 ₹219.83 ₹1.37
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g (series working fill 200 g) ₹179.76 ₹70.80 ₹18.00 (not listed — example ₹18.00) ₹38.90 ₹307.46 ₹1.54
300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) 300 g (example jar and price) ₹269.64 ₹95.00 ₹20.00 (example ₹20.00) ₹45.90 ₹430.54 ₹1.44

The per-gram column falls from ₹1.59 for the tin to ₹1.44 for the 300 g jar. Notice that it does not fall smoothly. The Salsa jar at 160 g costs ₹1.37 a gram, less than the White Matte at 200 g (₹1.54), because the Salsa jar is cheaper and brings its own lid. Container choice can beat size. That is why choosing a jar before scaling is a costing decision as well as a design one.

Where each candle's cost goes
Fixed cost as a share of the candle
Container Fill Fixed cost Oil + wax Fixed share
Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g ₹58.90 ₹76.40 43.5%
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml 100 g ₹79.10 ₹89.88 46.8%
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar 160 g ₹76.02 ₹143.81 34.6%
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g ₹127.70 ₹179.76 41.5%
300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) 300 g ₹160.90 ₹269.64 37.4%

On the tin and the Yankee jar, fixed cost is close to half the candle (43.5% and 46.8%). On the 300 g example jar it is 37.4%. Oil is the opposite case: it scales, so a fragrance upgrade costs the same per gram of candle at every size. An oil ₹2 a gram dearer adds ₹16.00 to a 100 g candle and ₹48.00 to a 300 g one — ₹0.16 per gram of candle either way. The fragrance-load post and the dosage comparison cover oil choices in depth.

100 g against 300 g

Three times the wax, not three times the cost: the 300 g candle costs ₹430.54 against ₹168.98.

Per gram ₹1.69 ₹1.44 0.85×
Materials only (no label or box), per gram ₹1.43 ₹1.30 0.91×

The oil and wax lines triple exactly, as they must. The wick and label do not move at all. The container and box rise, but by far less than three times. The result is a 300 g candle that costs 2.55 times as much as the 100 g for three times the candle. Even stripping out the label and box, the materials alone still cost more per gram in the small candle, because the jar and wick are fixed too.

Pricing the small candle by the gram of the large one. A maker who sells the 300 g at ₹1,199 sometimes prices the 100 g at a third of that, about ₹400, because "it's a third of the candle". On these costs the 100 g needs at least ₹422.45 to keep the same 60% margin on materials and packaging, and even more once per-order packing and courier are added. A third of the price is not a third of the cost.
The CSI principle
Fixed costs are paid per candle, not per gram.
The wick, container, lid, label and box are bought once for every candle whatever it weighs. Spread over fewer grams they cost more per gram. A costing that ignores this will always underprice the smallest size.

The 300 g wick question

The comparison uses one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 in every size to keep it fair. A wider 300 g jar may need a thicker wick or two wicks to melt fully; CSI does not publish wick sizing by jar diameter, so a burn test decides. The costing effect is small but real. With one Eco Thick C2 at ₹9.44 the 300 g candle costs ₹434.08 (₹1.45 a gram). With two Thin C1 wicks it costs ₹436.44 (₹1.45 a gram). Either way it stays well below the 100 g per gram.

Two wicks also add a second wick sticker and more setting time, so a two-wick design is a labour cost as well as a materials one. The 200 g true-cost post shows how to include those small lines. If you move to a larger or multi-wick jar, test before you print a price, and cost it at the wick you actually end up using.

Pricing by size

The practical answer to a higher cost per gram is a higher price per gram. Here is the minimum price each size needs to keep 60% of its price after materials and packaging. That target is illustrative; choose your own, and remember that courier, fees and labour still have to come out of what remains.

Minimum price for a 60% gross margin on materials + packaging · illustrative target
What each size must charge per gram
Container Fill Cost Minimum price at 60% Minimum ₹ per gram Markup at that price
Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g ₹135.30 ₹338.25 ₹3.98 150.0%
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml 100 g ₹168.98 ₹422.45 ₹4.22 150.0%
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar 160 g ₹219.83 ₹549.58 ₹3.43 150.0%
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g ₹307.46 ₹768.65 ₹3.84 150.0%
300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) 300 g ₹430.54 ₹1,076.35 ₹3.59 150.0%

A 60% gross margin is a 150% markup on cost; the two numbers describe the same price from different ends. Look at the fifth column. The 100 g candle needs ₹4.22 a gram against ₹3.59 for the 300 g, 18% more per gram just to keep the same margin — and that is before per-order packing and courier, which weigh far more heavily on a small, cheap candle. A higher price per gram is usually easier to justify on a small size sold as a taster, gift or add-on than on a large candle. The risk is a small candle that looks expensive for what it is, which is where cutting fixed cost comes in. The affordable-candle post tests whether a small size still makes sense once its fixed costs are counted, and the ₹499/₹799/₹1,199 post compares whole tiers.

The wax scales with the candle. The jar, the wick, the label and the box do not. Price for both.

Lowering the fixed cost on small candles

1
Use a container that includes its lidThe Yankee 130 ml and Salsa 200 ml come with caps. On a small candle an example ₹18.00 lid is a big share of the cost.
2
Give small sizes a smaller box or noneA small candle sold as an add-on often ships inside the main order's box. A sleeve or a tissue wrap can replace the product box.
3
Share one label design across sizesA single label that fits several containers lets you print a longer run at a lower unit price.
4
Buy the container in its larger packThe Salsa jar is ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 in hundreds — once the size is proven, that saving goes straight to the fixed cost.
5
Keep the same oil pack as your big candlesPour small candles from the 100 g or 1 kg bottle you already use, not from separate testers. The floor stays at the bulk rate.
6
Recalculate the per-gram price after every changeEach rupee off the fixed cost is worth three times as much per gram on a 100 g candle as on a 300 g one.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easy thing for a jar supplier to say is "add more sizes". Every size you add carries its own fixed costs, its own box and label, and its own stock. Small sizes in particular earn little per candle. Add a small size when it does a job — a lower entry price, a gift add-on, a sampler — and cost it with its fixed costs in full. Do not add it because the jar is cheap.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell every container on this page, and a longer size range means more jar orders. This page still tells you that small sizes carry heavy fixed costs and should be added only when they do a job, because a range of underpriced small candles hurts the businesses that buy from us.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tin, Yankee and Salsa jar prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Per-gram figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

The 85 g tin fill is published; the Yankee (100 g) and Salsa (160 g) fills are illustrative, and the 300 g jar, its price and its lid are examples, not CSI listings. Labels, boxes and the White Matte lid are example figures. Whether the golden tin's listing includes a lid is not stated in our data. Wick sizing is not published; test burn every size. Frequently asked questions

Why do smaller candles cost more per gram?
Because the wick, container, lid, label and box are paid once per candle and hardly shrink with size, while wax and oil do. Spread over fewer grams, fixed costs add more per gram. In our example, ₹1.69 a gram at 100 g against ₹1.44 at 300 g.
How do I calculate candle cost per gram?
Total cost of the finished candle ÷ fill weight. Or split it: oil-and-wax cost per gram (₹0.90 for 8% Lavender in CSI 464) plus fixed cost ÷ fill weight.
How much should a 100 g candle cost compared to a 300 g candle?
More per gram. To keep the same 60% margin on materials and packaging, our 100 g candle needs at least ₹422.45 and the 300 g at least ₹1,076.35 — the small one at ₹4.22 a gram against ₹3.59.
What is the fill weight of CSI's jars?
Only the Golden Aluminium Tin lists a fill weight: 85 g. For the Yankee 130 ml, Salsa 200 ml and White Matte jars, fill one to your line with wax or water and weigh it. Do not rely on the ml figure alone.
Does a bigger candle need a bigger wick?
Often a wider jar needs a thicker wick or more than one. CSI does not publish wick sizes by jar diameter, so burn test each size. Cost it at the wick you end up using; the difference per candle is a few rupees.
Which small candle container is cheapest per candle?
Of the worked options, the Golden Aluminium Tin at ₹30.00 and the Salsa jar at ₹29.50 in packs of 100. The Salsa and Yankee jars include caps, which removes a separate lid cost.
Cost every size on its own
