My Candle Looks Profitable Before Packaging but the Final Boxed Product Becomes Expensive — How Should I Calculate Packaging Cost per Order?
Aktie
Why does my boxed candle cost so much? Because packaging adds up to more than the fragrance. Per-candle packaging here is ₹93.25 (example figures) against ₹80.43 of Sandalwood oil. Add the mailer and per-order items and a single-candle order costs ₹132.75 to pack, 48.0% of the candle's material cost.
Does packaging get cheaper for bigger orders? Only the shipping part. Per candle, packaging falls from ₹132.75 in a 1-candle order to ₹117.00 in a 2-candle order and ₹111.75 in a 3-candle order. The per-candle product packaging never moves. See order size.
What figure should I use in my pricing? The weighted figure for your real order mix. With 60% single, 30% double and 10% triple orders, packaging averages ₹122.25 a candle. Work out your own mix.
The packaging bill of materials
A bill of materials is simply every item that goes into the finished parcel, with a quantity and a unit cost. Most makers never write one for packaging. They buy boxes and labels in separate orders, pay for them from the same account as wax, and never see the per-candle figure. Writing it down takes ten minutes and is the only way to answer the question in the title.
| Item | Paid per | Unit cost | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lid (White Matte jar has none listed) | candle | ₹18.00 | Example |
| Front label | candle | ₹9.00 | Example |
| Base / warning label | candle | ₹3.00 | Example |
| Product box | candle | ₹45.00 | Example |
| Box insert | candle | ₹8.00 | Example |
| Tissue wrap, half a sheet | candle | ₹3.25 | CSI: ₹650.00 / 100 sheets |
| Bubble wrap round the jar | candle | ₹7.00 | Example |
| Mailer carton (1 / 2 / 3 candles) | order | ₹24.00 / ₹32.00 / ₹40.00 | Example |
| Void fill | order | ₹5.00 | Example |
| Tape | order | ₹2.00 | Example |
| Thank-you card | order | ₹6.00 | Example |
| Fragile sticker | order | ₹1.50 | Example |
| Printed invoice / slip | order | ₹1.00 | Example |
| Per-candle total | ₹93.25 | ||
| Per-order total (excl. mailer) | ₹15.50 |
Two things jump out. First, per-candle packaging at ₹93.25 already costs more than the ₹80.43 of fragrance inside the jar. Second, the box and insert alone (₹53.00) cost 65.9% as much as the oil. Makers spend weeks choosing an oil to save ₹10 a candle and minutes choosing a box that costs five times that. The lid is on the per-candle list because CSI lists no lid for the White Matte Glass Jar; if you use a jar sold with its cap, such as the 200 ml Salsa jar or the Yankee 130 ml jar, that line disappears.
Cost per order, by order size
With the list split, the per-order figure is arithmetic. Multiply the per-candle total by the candles in the order, then add the mailer for that size and the per-order items once.
| Order | Per-candle items | Mailer | Other per-order items | Packaging per order | Per candle | Share of ₹799 per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 candle | ₹93.25 | ₹24.00 | ₹15.50 | ₹132.75 | ₹132.75 | 16.6% |
| 2 candles | ₹186.50 | ₹32.00 | ₹15.50 | ₹234.00 | ₹117.00 | 14.6% |
| 3 candles | ₹279.75 | ₹40.00 | ₹15.50 | ₹335.25 | ₹111.75 | 14.0% |
From one candle to three, packaging per candle falls by ₹21.00. That is the per-order part being shared. The per-candle part, ₹93.25, stays exactly where it is. This is why "packaging gets cheaper at volume" is only half true. Volume in the sense of more candles per parcel helps; volume in the sense of more single-candle orders does not help at all.
It is also why bundles, "add a second candle" prompts and gift sets can lift margins without any change to the candle. The gift-set margin post shows how to allocate costs when the same materials go into singles and sets. Courier behaves the same way as the mailer, only more so, and the free-shipping post deals with it separately.
Your order mix decides the real figure
To price a candle you need one packaging figure per candle, and the right one is weighted by how your customers actually buy. Look at last month's orders and count how many had one, two and three or more candles. Then weight each order size by the candles it contains.
| Order size | Share of orders | Packaging per order | Candles per 100 orders | Packaging per 100 orders |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 candle | 60% | ₹132.75 | 60 | ₹7,965.00 |
| 2 candles | 30% | ₹234.00 | 60 | ₹7,020.00 |
| 3 candles | 10% | ₹335.25 | 30 | ₹3,352.50 |
| Total | 100% | 150 | ₹18,337.50 |
One hundred orders in this mix carry 150 candles and cost ₹18,337.50 to pack, so ₹122.25 a candle. That is the packaging figure to put in your cost sheet next to materials. An average of 1.5 candles an order is typical of a shop where most customers buy one candle; if your mix shifts towards bundles, the figure falls, and you should recalculate.
Which box your price can carry
Here is the same single-candle order with four levels of product box. The candle and every other packaging line stay the same; only the box (and its insert) changes. The last two columns show what is left from ₹799 after the candle's materials and all packaging, before courier, fees, labour and fixed costs.
| Box option | Box (example) | Packaging per order | Materials + packaging | Left from ₹799 | Share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No product box — tissue, label and bubble wrap only | ₹0.00 | ₹79.75 | ₹356.48 | ₹442.52 | 55.4% |
| Kraft sleeve | ₹15.00 | ₹94.75 | ₹371.48 | ₹427.52 | 53.5% |
| Folding carton (as worked) | ₹45.00 | ₹132.75 | ₹409.48 | ₹389.52 | 48.8% |
| Rigid box with insert | ₹85.00 | ₹164.75 | ₹441.48 | ₹357.52 | 44.7% |
The spread between the plainest and the most premium option is ₹85.00 an order. At ₹799 the rigid box is affordable on paper, but it takes a large bite of what is left for every other cost. Whether it is worth it depends on your customer. A gifting customer may expect a box and pay for it; a customer buying for their own shelf often throws it away. If you sell both, offer the box as a paid gift-wrap option rather than building it into every candle.
Quantity, quotes and cash
Printed boxes and labels usually get cheaper per unit with quantity, and suppliers often have minimum runs. That creates the same trade-off as bulk wax: a lower unit price in exchange for cash tied up in stock. The difference is that a printed box is specific to one product and one design. If you change the candle, the name or the look, unused boxes are waste.
| Quantity | Unit price (example) | Order total | Months of stock at 150 candles a month | Saving per candle vs 100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | ₹75.00 | ₹7,500.00 | 0.7 | ₹0.00 |
| 500 | ₹45.00 | ₹22,500.00 | 3.3 | ₹30.00 |
| 1,000 | ₹38.00 | ₹38,000.00 | 6.7 | ₹37.00 |
Moving from 100 to 500 boxes saves ₹30.00 a box in this example but ties up ₹22,500.00 in stock that lasts more than three months. Going to 1,000 saves another ₹7.00 a box and ties up ₹38,000.00 for more than six months. Buy the quantity you are confident of using before you next change the design. For a new product that is usually the smaller run, even though the unit cost is higher. The dead-stock post covers the same decision for raw materials.
The candle inside the box
The worked candle is a 200 g container candle at an 8% load: 16 g of Sandalwood (₹80.43), 184 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (₹119.60), an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte jar (₹70.80): ₹276.73. No fragrance ceiling for CSI 468 is quoted in this series, so 8% is a working load; check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before you push higher.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹502.68 | ₹5.03 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹2,513.40 | ₹5.03 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,026.80 | ₹5.03 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | 200 g candles at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹325.00 | ₹650.00 | 2.72 |
| 1 kg | ₹650.00 | ₹650.00 | 5.43 |
| 5 kg | ₹3,185.00 | ₹637.00 | 27.17 |
| 10 kg | ₹6,370.00 | ₹637.00 | 54.35 |
For the rest of the costing, the forgotten-costs post lists everything beyond materials and the profit post puts packaging on the right line of the profit ladder. If the packaging maths makes a small candle look impossible, the affordable-candle post tests it properly, and the ₹1,499 allocation post shows how a luxury price splits between fragrance and outer packaging.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Of everything in this packaging list, CSI sells only the tissue paper and the jars. We have written the page anyway, because packaging is where many profitable-looking candles quietly lose their margin, and a customer who understands that buys raw materials with more confidence.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tissue paper and capped-jar prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Per-order and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals.
