CSI Wick Buying · Catch-Up Tunnels
A tunnel on burn 1 that closes by burn 3 and passes full life is a first-burn problem, not a wick-size problem. Keep the wick, set the first-burn wording, and buy labels instead of a bigger rung.
₹0.83
a care sticker per candle on the 500 roll, against ₹3.54 a candle to move from C1 to C2 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle tunnels on the first burn but catches up later. Is the wick too small? Not necessarily. If all three test candles reach the glass by burn 2 or 3 and then pass a full-life burn, the wick is doing its job. The first burn is the weak point, and the fix is usually the customer's first burn, not your wick.

What should I buy, then? Usually no new wick. Buy care labels and set your first-burn wording. The Candle Care Stickers Roll of 500 is ₹413.00, ₹0.83 a candle. Moving every candle up a rung from C1 to C2 costs ₹3.54 a candle, about 4.3 times as much.

When does catching up still mean a bigger wick? When it only works after a long first burn and a short first burn leaves a ring for good, or when the candle doesn't catch up by burn 3 at all. The first is tested with twins (see the short-first-burn stress test). The second is a different symptom with its own evidence threshold.

How much does each fix cost over a month? At 200 candles: stickers ₹165.20, the rung-up ₹708.00. The rung-up also needs its own full-life test before you can sell it.
The short answer
Verdict: a tunnel on burn 1 that closes by burn 2–3 is not, on its own, proof of an undersized wick. The full-life burn decides.
If full life passes: keep the wick (here Eco C1, ₹5.90 a wick), buy care labels (₹413.00 for 500) and print a first-burn instruction. No C2.
If a short first burn leaves a permanent ring: stronger first-burn wording or one rung up. Compare ₹0.83 a candle with ₹3.54 a candle plus a three-candle C2 test (₹610.69 in materials).
Don't buy yet: a C2 pack before the full life, or the 1,000-sticker roll before you know the 1.5-inch size fits your jar.
A first-burn tunnel that catches up: what each fix costs a month Extra cost over a C1 candle with no label, by monthly volume. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Straight lines because the C1, C2 and sticker prices are flat per unit. Excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST. Worked example. 0 300 600 900 1,200 1,500 1,800 0 100 200 300 400 500 candles made per month extra per month (₹) ₹708.00 ₹165.20 C1 → C2 ₹3.54 a candle 1-inch sticker ₹0.83 each 1.5-inch sticker ₹0.70 each At 200 candles a month the rung-up costs ₹542.80 more than labelling, for a wick you do not need if the full-life test passes.
Extra monthly cost of two fixes for a first-burn tunnel, drawn to scale against volume. Moving every candle from C1 to C2 (solid line) adds ₹3.54 a candle. A 1-inch care sticker (dashed) adds ₹0.83; the 1.5-inch sticker from the 1,000 roll (dotted) adds ₹0.70. All three are straight lines because CSI prices C1, C2 and both stickers flat per unit. At 200 candles a month the gap is ₹542.80, and only one of the two fixes needs a new full-life test before you can sell it.
Straight answer
My candle tunnels during the first burn but catches up during later burns. Does that necessarily mean the wick is too small?
No. A wick that leaves a thin ring on burn 1, reaches the glass by burn 2 or 3, and then takes all three test candles through a clean full-life burn is a wick that fits the jar. What it tells you is that the first burn is the fragile one. Soy commonly melts more slowly on a fresh, fully set surface than on a surface that has already melted once, and a first burn that is cut short can leave a ring that later burns have to work against. The purchase consequence is therefore usually not a new rung. It is a first-burn instruction your customer will actually read: a care sticker or label line telling them to let the first burn reach the edge, which for a jar about 6.3 cm inside is roughly 2.5 hours on a common rule of thumb. In our worked example (a White Matte Glass Jar, 8% Citrus Lemon in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco C1), labelling costs ₹0.83 a candle on CSI's 500-sticker roll; moving up to C2 costs ₹3.54 a candle and a new full-life test. Change the wick only if a short first burn leaves a ring that never closes, or if the candle doesn't catch up by burn 3 at all.
One line: if it catches up and passes full life, buy labels, not a bigger wick.
The catch-up order: one Candle Care Stickers Roll of 500 (₹413.00, in stock on 1 October 2026) after the full life passes, and your approved Eco C1 for production. Ask us for a photo of the sticker wording first.
Care Stickers 500 — ₹413.00

What to order when the candle catches up

The tunnel happened once. Don't let it write a purchase order you'll repeat every month.

The worked example: three candles in CSI's White Matte Glass Jar, 150 g each at 8% Citrus Lemon (12 g of oil + 138 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, load as a percentage of total weight), each on an Eco C1. On burn 1 all three leave a ring about 0.5 cm wide, 29.2% of the surface unmelted. By burn 2 the pool touches the glass on two of them; by burn 3, on all three. Before you buy anything, two questions have to be answered: does the candle pass the full life, and does it still catch up if the first burn is short, the way many customers burn? The buy list follows from that order of questions.

The twins are three extra candles poured exactly like the first three, for the short-first-burn stress test. From nothing, they cost ₹823.00 (oil, wax and a pack of jars; wicks from your C1 pack), or ₹941.00 with a fresh C1 20-pack. The care stickers come after the full life passes, because the full life is what tells you the label is the fix. Each test candle is ₹129.22 in materials before its jar, ₹200.02 with it.

Don't buy yet: a C2 pack "just in case". A wick that catches up and passes the full life is approved, and a C2 bought now is a wick you will either never use or, worse, use and discover runs hot in the final third of a jar C1 was already handling. Argued against our own interest: we sell C2. For this candle, if the tests pass, you don't need it.

The release rule: what makes the tunnel acceptable

Catching up is a promise. The full life is where you check it was kept.

"It catches up" is not yet an approval. Our rule, labelled as judgement and in line with the series rule in the 8 cm ladder hub: the tunnel is acceptable, and the wick stays, when all three of these hold.

Release rule · keep the wick and buy labels when…
Three candles, same pour, centred, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, still air · thresholds are our judgement, labelled
Condition What you check If it fails
1 · Catch-up on every candle All three reach the glass all round by burn 3, and the ring shrinks burn over burn Not this post: a ring that won't shrink needs the evidence threshold for sizing up
2 · Clean full life All three burn to about 1 cm left with no heat, soot, mushrooming or flame problems in the final third A wick that catches up but runs hot low down is not too small; see tunnels early but too hot later
3 · Survives a short first burn Twins whose first burn is stopped early still recover by burn 3 (the method is in the short-first-burn stress test) Label wording has to carry more weight, or test one rung up

Condition 3 is the one that decides whether a label is enough. Many customers light a new candle for an hour, not three. If your twins recover anyway, an ordinary first-burn line on the label is plenty. If they keep a ring for good, the label is now holding up the product, and you have to decide whether you trust a sticker to do that. The ring itself can be costed: scrape and weigh what is left at the end of life, as the ring-acceptance post sets out. This page takes those results and turns them into an order.

On this jar the geometry is modest: about 31.17 cm² inside, and a rough rule of thumb of about 2.5 hours to the edge. A common benchmark puts a full first pool at about 3–4 hours. A first burn that falls a little short of the glass at three hours in this jar is borderline, which is exactly why the twins matter more than the first burn.

Why a citrus is a fair test case
Heavy, dense oils such as vanilla, coffee and resinous woods are commonly linked to needing a larger wick or to carbon on the wick. A bright citrus like Citrus Lemon isn't usually in that group, so a first-burn tunnel here points more at the first burn itself than at the oil. That is a tendency, not a rule, and CSI has no measured wick data for any oil. If your oil is heavy, run the same release rule; it holds for any oil.

Label or rung up: the money across a production month

One fix costs ₹0.83 a candle. The other costs ₹3.54 a candle and a retest.

Both fixes are flat per unit at CSI, so the comparison is a straight line: cost per candle × candles a month. The diagram above draws it to scale; the table below gives the numbers.

Two fixes compared · worked example at CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Extra over a C1 candle with no label · monthly at 100, 200 and 500 candles · all figures declared
Fix Per candle 100 a month 200 a month 500 a month One-off before selling
Care sticker, 500 roll (1 inch) ₹0.83 ₹82.60 ₹165.20 ₹413.00 None, once the full life has passed
Care sticker, 1,000 roll (1.5 inch) ₹0.70 — ₹139.80 ₹349.50 Check the bigger sticker fits
Rung up: C1 → C2 ₹3.54 ₹354.00 ₹708.00 ₹1,770.00 A C2 arm to full life: ₹610.69 in materials

Over twelve months at 200 candles, the rung-up premium comes to ₹8,496.00 against ₹1,982.40 of stickers. The sticker is 0.41% of a C1 candle with its jar (₹200.85 with the sticker, against ₹203.56 on C2 with no sticker). Money is not the main argument, though. The rung-up changes how the candle burns for its whole life, and a wick that only needed help on burn 1 can carry too much heat into the final third. A label changes nothing about the burn except the first one.

The C2 confirmation arm, if you ever need it, costs ₹610.69 in materials including jars (three candles to full life), or ₹917.40 in cash from nothing (a C2 10-pack, a 50 g bottle, a 500 g bag and a pack of five jars). That spend is the honest price of the rung-up route, and it buys nothing if the twins recover.

Mistake: moving up a rung to "cover" customers who burn for an hour. Why it fails: it treats one burn as if it were the whole candle. A bigger wick reaches the glass sooner on burn 1, but it keeps putting out more heat on burns 2 to the end, when the smaller wick was already managing. Fix: let the twin test decide. If short-first-burn twins recover, label it. If they don't, test C2 as a full configuration, through full life, before it touches production.

Setting the first-burn wording

The label is part of the candle. Write it from your test data, not from habit.

"Set first-burn wording" means writing one instruction your test supports. Our suggested wording, labelled as judgement and adjusted to your own results: "First burn: let the wax melt all the way to the edge, about 3 hours. Trim the wick to 5–6 mm before each burn. Never burn for more than 4 hours. Burn within sight." The three hours comes from your own log, not ours: use the time your three candles took to reach the glass on burn 1, rounded up.

1
Take the time from your logThe longest time any of the three candles took to reach the glass on burn 1, rounded up to the half hour. That is your first-burn figure.
2
Check it against the twinsIf short-first-burn twins recovered, a plain instruction is enough. If they didn't, the wording must be firmer ("do not blow out before the wax reaches the edge"), and you should decide whether you are comfortable relying on it.
3
See the sticker before you buyThe Candle Care Stickers page, in the text we captured, does not give the printed wording. Ask us for a photo. If it lacks a first-burn line, print your own label; a generic sticker that says nothing about the first burn does not fix this symptom.
4
Match sticker size to the jarThe 500 roll is 1 inch and the 1,000 roll 1.5 inch. Measure the flat area on your jar or lid before choosing the roll that is cheaper per sticker.
5
Keep the trim lineOne CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn". A long, untrimmed wick on burn 2 makes a tunnel look worse and smoke more, and the smoke has its own post: the long-wick smoke post.

Labelling and net-quantity rules for packaged goods change, and a care sticker is not a substitute for whatever your label must legally carry. Check current requirements; this is not legal advice. If you sell through a retailer, ask what they require on the base.

Don't buy the big roll yet: the 1,000 roll (₹699.00) is cheaper per sticker than the 500 (₹0.13 less each), but at 210 candles a month it is 4.8 months of stickers, at a size you haven't fitted, with wording you haven't seen. Argued against our own interest: buy the 500 roll first, or print your own if ours doesn't say what your candle needs.

Four catch-up patterns, four purchases

The same burn-1 tunnel can end in four different orders. The later burns decide which.
Catch-up pattern → purchase
Three candles plus three short-first-burn twins · readings are our judgement, labelled · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
What the candles and twins show Reading Purchase Cost per candle
Catch up by burn 2–3, clean full life, twins recover too Wick approved; ordinary first burn C1 for production + care stickers ₹5.90 + ₹0.83
Catch up only after a full first burn; twins keep a ring Wick on the edge for short burners Firm first-burn label, or a C2 arm (10-pack ₹94.40) through full life ₹0.83, or ₹3.54 more on C2
Catch up, but run hot in the final third Not undersized; possibly already at the top for this jar No rung up; see the late-heat post —
Don't catch up by burn 3; ring not shrinking A different symptom The next rung at test counts (the cluster hub) ₹3.54 more on C2

Only one row in four ends in a new wick, and even that row offers a label as the first option. That isn't us trying to sell fewer wicks. It is how this symptom tends to resolve: the later burns already show the wick can do the work, and what's left to fix is the first burn. The hub of this cluster, the narrow-pool-after-three-hours post, gives the short version for all twenty symptoms.

Production: C1 and labels, ordered together

The approved wick and its label are one line item. Order them on the same formula.

Once the release rule holds, size the order from your own production: wicks to buy = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), and the same count of labels. 5% is our worked-example allowance for rejects and retests.

Production worked example · 200 candles a month · White Matte jar · C1 + care sticker
Wicks and stickers = 200 × 1.05 · flat per-unit prices · all figures declared
Line Monthly need Cost at the per-unit price Packs that cover it
Eco C1 210 ₹1,239.00 two 100 + one 20 = 220 wicks, ₹1,298.00
Care stickers 210 ₹173.46 one 500 roll (₹413.00), 2.4 months
For comparison: Eco C2 instead 210 ₹1,982.40 not needed if the release rule holds

Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock. At 210 wicks a month, about 7 a day; with a 7-day lead time and five days of safety stock (both your figures; CSI publishes no lead times or stock depth), reorder C1 at about 84 wicks. A 500 roll lasts 2.4 months at this rate, so stickers can ride along with every second wick order. Keep 3–5 unused C1 from each pack as retained samples (judgement); if a later batch starts tunnelling for longer, you can burn a retained wick beside a new one.

Don't jump to the 1,000-pack: a C1 1,000-pack (₹5,900.00) is ₹5.90 a wick, the same as the 20-pack, and at 210 a month it is nearly five months of stock. A new jar batch or a switch from Citrus Lemon to a heavier oil can change how the first burn behaves, and you would want to retest before using a thousand of anything. Buy a month plus safety stock.

Candle Care Stickers Roll
The item a first-burn tunnel that catches up usually calls for: a printed instruction that gets the customer's first burn long enough. The listing sells a roll of 500 stickers at 1 inch and a roll of 1,000 at 1.5 inch, and describes "Candle Care Stickers to keep your candles burning clean and strong". What the page does not say: in the text we captured it does not give the printed wording, so we cannot tell you whether it includes a first-burn instruction. Ask us for a photo before you rely on it. Honest note: unlike the wicks, the bigger roll is cheaper per sticker (₹0.70 against ₹0.83), but it is a bigger sticker; buy the size that fits your jar, not the cheaper one.

The oil this page is costed on. The page states "candles (6-10%)" and, in its FAQ, "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing - citrus fragrances benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw." Notes, as listed: "zesty lemon and lime top notes, bright grapefruit and orange heart, and a tangy mandarin finish". A bright citrus is a useful case because it is not one of the heavy oils commonly linked to needing a bigger wick; a first-burn tunnel here is less likely to be the oil's fault. The page also calls it "Strong throw"; that is the page's claim, not a measurement. Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026. Per gram it falls from ₹5.43 to ₹2.83.

The page also says the wax gives "smooth tops and minimal frosting or wet spots when used correctly", the page's own claim. White Matte Glass Jar
A CSI jar, used so the geometry isn't invented. The page gives "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" and "a fill weight of 200 ml", and says it can "withstand high heat" with no temperature figure. We read 7 cm as the outside (about 6.3 cm inside on our labelled 0.35 cm wall); 200 ml of water is about 200 g, and a common rule of thumb puts wax at roughly 172 g–180 g to the brim, so a 150 g fill with headspace is a labelled worked example. Weigh your own fill line. Limitation: the page gives no heat rating, so pour at the low end of your wax's range and pre-warm the jars (judgement).

The CSI principle
Fix the burn that failed, not the burns that passed.
A tunnel on burn 1 that closes by burn 3 and passes full life is a first-burn problem. A ₹0.83 label fixes the first burn; a ₹3.54 rung-up changes every burn.
"If the candle catches up, the wick has already answered the question. Make sure the customer gives it the chance."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, stickers, oil, wax and jars named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy our next wick size for a candle that catches up, to see our sticker wording before you order it, to print your own label if ours doesn't fit the need, and not to buy the bigger sticker roll just because it is cheaper per sticker.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, such as the sticker's printed wording or the jar's heat rating, we say so.

The 150 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the burn-1 ring, the release rule, the suggested label wording, the 200-candle month and the 5% allowance are our judgement or worked examples. Melt-pool times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data, and CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a soy candle to tunnel on the first burn?
It is common for a first burn to leave a thin ring, especially if it is stopped early. What matters is whether the candle reaches the glass by burn 2 or 3 and then burns cleanly to the end on all your test candles.
Does tunnelling mean my wick is too small?
Not if it catches up and passes the full life. Persistent tunnelling, a ring that does not shrink over three burns on three candles, is what points to a wick that is too small.
How long should the first burn of a candle be?
Until the wax melts to the edge. A rough rule of thumb is about one hour per 2.5 cm of jar width, about 2.5 hours for a 6.3 cm inside diameter. Use the time your own test candles took, rounded up, on your label.
What should a candle care label say?
At minimum: let the first burn reach the edge (with your tested time), trim the wick to about 5–6 mm before each burn, don't burn more than about 4 hours at a time, and burn within sight. Check what the law requires on your label separately.
How much do candle care stickers cost per candle?
CSI's Candle Care Stickers Roll is ₹413.00 for 500 at 1 inch (₹0.83 each) or ₹699.00 for 1,000 at 1.5 inch (₹0.70 each). Ask for a photo of the wording before you buy.
Is a bigger wick or a care label cheaper to fix tunnelling?
For a candle that catches up, the label: ₹0.83 a candle against ₹3.54 for moving from C1 to C2, plus the C2 full-life test. At 200 candles a month that is ₹165.20 against ₹708.00.
Tunnels once, then catches up
Keep the wick, label the first burn: ₹0.83 a candle, not ₹3.54.
Burn your three candles through full life, run three short-first-burn twins, and if they recover, order C1 and a 500 sticker roll together. Ask us for a photo of the sticker wording before you buy.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on wick symptoms → purchase decisions (5541–5560). It covers the purchase consequence of a first-burn tunnel that catches up: no new rung if the full life passes, care labels and first-burn wording instead, the label-versus-rung-up money across a production month, four catch-up patterns and their purchases, and the production order for the approved wick and its label.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The jar page gives "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" and "a fill weight of 200 ml"; reading 7 cm as the outside with a labelled 0.35 cm wall gives about 6.3 cm inside; the 150 g fill is a worked example (wax at roughly 0.86–0.9 times water weight is a rule of thumb). Ceilings are as the pages state (Chunks up to 13%, its FAQ "of total wax weight"; Citrus Lemon 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times are commonly cited rules of thumb. The burn-1 ring, the release rule, the label wording, the 200-candle month, the lead time and the 5% allowance are worked examples and editorial judgement. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
