My Citrus Candle Smells Fresh When Cold but the Top Notes Disappear Quickly While Burning — Why Are Some Fragrance Notes Harder to Retain in Candles?
Aktie
Is some of the citrus lost before the candle is lit? Commonly, yes — while wax is held hot after the oil goes in, and during an open, uncovered cure. Those are the losses you control. See the five places.
Does a more expensive citrus oil last longer? Price does not tell you. In a 200 g candle at 8%, Citrus Lemon costs ₹45.31 of oil and Tangerine ₹191.98 at 1 kg rates. Only a time-series burn tells you which holds its opening in your wax.
How do I test citrus retention? Cure lidded and open jars side by side, then score the burn every 15–30 minutes across three sessions. For two citrus oils in Salsa jars the set costs ₹1,267.00. See the time-series test.
Why top notes leave first
Perfumers build fragrances in three tiers. Top notes are the lightest and most volatile, the first impression. Heart notes carry the main character. Base notes are heavy, slow and long-lasting. Citrus-type materials are classic top notes: fresh, sparkling and quick to go. A citrus fragrance oil therefore has much of its identity in the tier that evaporates fastest. The individual composition of any CSI oil is not published; this is general perfumery.
In a candle, heat speeds everything up. The hot melt pool drives off the lightest materials first, so the opening minutes of a burn are rich in citrus and the later part is carried by whatever heavier materials the formula contains. From one burn to the next, the same thing happens to the pool as a whole: the surface layer that was richest in top notes has already given them up. That is why a citrus candle can seem a little less bright on its third burn than its first. The cold vs hot character page covers the general version of this shift.
The five places citrus is lost
Top-note loss is not one event. It happens at five stages between the jug and the customer's room, and three of them are in your production process. The table sets out each, the mechanism commonly described, and what helps. CSI has no measurements of how much is lost at any stage, so none are given; the order of the list is about control, not size.
| Stage | What happens | Who controls it | What helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Holding hot wax after adding oil | Light materials evaporate from a hot open jug | You | Add oil within the wax maker's range and pour promptly; do not reheat scented wax repeatedly |
| 2 · Pouring and setting | Surface of the hot jar gives off top notes as it cools | You | Pour at the wax maker's recommended point; cover once set |
| 3 · Cure | An uncovered surface keeps losing the lightest materials | You | Cap or cover during cure and storage |
| 4 · The first minutes of each burn | Pool drives off the lightest materials first | The candle | Judge at 30 and 90 minutes, not only at lighting |
| 5 · Later burns | The pool's lightest materials have already been spent | The formula | A heavier anchor in the blend; honest burn-time expectations |
The first stage is the one makers underestimate. Adding oil and then leaving the jug on the heat while you wick jars, answer the phone or reheat a batch that set too soon gives the lightest materials the longest time to escape. For Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, CSI's own guidance is 80–90°C melt and pour — confirm on the product page. For other waxes, follow the wax maker's instructions; CSI has no temperatures on record for them. Flash point is a transport and safety property on the oil's MSDS, not an addition temperature. Adding oil to very hot wax and how much fragrance evaporates in production go deeper.
Does paying more buy retention?
CSI's citrus oils span one of the widest price ranges in the catalogue. The table prices the oil in a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g) at each oil's 1 kg rate. CSI publishes no throw or retention data for any of them, so the table is about cost, not performance. A dearer citrus may or may not hold its opening better; the only way to know is the test below.
| Oil | 1 kg price | Per gram | Oil per candle | Material cost per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2,832.00 | ₹2.83 | ₹45.31 | ₹232.23 |
| Lemongrass and Lime | ₹5,200.00 | ₹5.20 | ₹83.20 | ₹270.12 |
| Juicy Orange | ₹7,499.00 | ₹7.50 | ₹119.98 | ₹306.90 |
| Tangerine | ₹11,999.00 | ₹12.00 | ₹191.98 | ₹378.90 |
Material cost is oil plus 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹110.22), an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. The spread is more than fourfold: ₹146.67 a candle between the cheapest and dearest citrus. If a time-series test shows a dearer citrus holds its opening meaningfully longer in your candle, it may earn that. If it fades at the same rate, the cheaper oil is the better buy. Lemongrass and Lime's 1 kg is 11.9% cheaper per gram than its 100 g and Citrus Lemon's 5.6%, two of the catalogue's real price breaks; Tangerine and Juicy Orange are priced flat per gram.
The lidded-cure and time-series test
This test separates the losses you control (stage 3, the cure) from the losses you do not (stages 4 and 5, the burn). It uses 200 ml Salsa Glass Jars because they come with a golden lug cap, so lidded and open jars are otherwise identical. The jar's fill weight is not published; the maths uses an example 150 g fill — weigh one jar filled to your line and replace it. The wax is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 because CSI has temperature guidance on record for it, which lets you control stage 1.

Anchoring citrus without losing it
If the test shows a fast in-burn fade in every citrus you try, the lever is the formula. A share of a heavier oil — woody, musky or amber types are the common choices — gives the later burn something to stand on, while the citrus still leads the opening. Total load stays at 8% and applies to the combined blend: component grams = total oil × share.
| Formula | Citrus Lemon | Woody Oud | Oil cost per candle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon alone | 16.00 g | — | ₹48.00 |
| 70:30 citrus : wood | 11.20 g | 4.80 g | ₹55.35 |
| Citrus Lemon at 10% (the tempting 'fix') | 20.00 g | — | ₹60.00 |
The anchor costs ₹7.35 more per candle than lemon alone at these rates, similar to simply raising the lemon to 10%. The difference is what each buys. More lemon mostly buys a brighter opening that fades the same way, and it moves the candle towards the wax's ceiling. An anchor changes the shape of the curve. It also changes the fragrance, so approve the blend cold and hot as a new scent. Formulating citrus-woody blends for hot-throw balance covers ratios and testing in depth.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A fading citrus is an easy moment to sell a dearer citrus. This page shows the cheapest oil beside the dearest, says plainly that price does not predict retention, and puts free process fixes first.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; the Salsa jar is from the 24–25 September container pull; wicks, thermometer and White Matte Glass Jar are Blog 760's figures, verified 10 September 2026. The Salsa jar's fill weight is not published, so 150 g is a labelled example. The CSI 464 80–90°C range is CSI's own earlier guidance — confirm on the product page.
Top-note volatility, the five loss stages and the anchor effect are general perfumery and candle-making knowledge, not CSI measurements; no loss percentages are given because none are measured. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is the share of finished candle weight (oil = W × L). Example Salsa fill of 150 g is an assumption — the fill weight is not published; at 8% = 12.00 g oil + 138.00 g wax. 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil. Per-candle material cost = oil + ₹110.22 Chunks wax + ₹5.90 wick + ₹70.80 jar, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. Blend: 70:30 of 16 g = 11.20 g + 4.80 g.
