Wick change · Is it worth it?
Only if the ₹2 survives testing and repays it well inside the time you will use the new wick. Payback in candles is the one-off revalidation cost divided by the net saving per candle — about two thousand candles for one SKU on this page's figures, several thousand for a wick shared across a range.
1,998
candles to repay a one-SKU revalidation (₹3,995.56, CSI materials plus example labour) at ₹2 a candle · CSI prices, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate if a cheaper wick is worth it? Payback in candles = one-off revalidation cost ÷ net saving per candle. Compare it with the candles you will make on that wick before the next change.

What does revalidation cost? On this page: ₹3,995.56 for one SKU, ₹12,564.48 for eight SKUs bracketed, ₹18,012.46 for eight in full — CSI materials plus example labour of ₹250.00 per test candle.

Can the ₹2 disappear? Easily. Half a point more fragrance to recover throw costs ₹3.58 a candle with Peach Melon Berry; an example one-in-200 return rate at ₹400.00 costs ₹2.00.

What do CSI wicks cost per wick? Eco Thin C1 ₹5.90, Eco Thick C2 ₹9.44, Cotton Braided ₹12.00 (flat across packs), Wooden ₹59.00 / ₹47.20 / ₹41.30 by pack. They are different products, not equivalents. See the comparison.
The short answer
Formula: Payback (candles) = revalidation cost ÷ net saving per candle; months = payback ÷ monthly volume on that wick.
Numbers: At ₹2: 1,998 candles (1 SKU), 6,283 (8 bracketed), 9,007 (8 full). At a ₹0.50 net saving the one-SKU payback is 7,992.
Rule: Safety first, then net saving, then payback against your written threshold, then supply reliability. The 5,000-wick post covers stock already bought.
Payback = one-off revalidation cost ÷ ₹2 saved per candle Cumulative saving rises ₹2 a candle; the switch has paid for itself where the line crosses your test cost 0 2,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 10,000 ₹0 ₹5,000 ₹10,000 ₹15,000 ₹20,000 candles made after the switch ₹2.00 a candle ₹0.50 net (example) 1 SKU, full side-by-side: ₹3,995.56 → 1,998 candles 8 SKUs, bracketed: ₹12,564.48 → 6,283 candles 8 SKUs, all full life: ₹18,012.46 → 9,007 candles
The solid line is the cumulative saving at ₹2 a candle; the dashed line is the same switch if hidden costs cut the net saving to an example ₹0.50. Each horizontal line is a one-off revalidation cost from this page (CSI materials plus example labour of ₹250.00 per test candle), and each dot marks where the ₹2 line has repaid it. The candle counts are arithmetic, not forecasts; your own costs and saving move every line.
Straight answer
My new wick is cheaper by ₹2 per candle but requires more testing — how do I calculate whether changing suppliers is financially worthwhile?
Divide the one-off revalidation cost by the net saving per candle, and compare the answer with how many candles you will make on the new wick. A wick change voids your combustion results, so the ₹2 only starts after you have paid for a proper side-by-side. On this page's figures — real CSI test materials plus an example ₹250.00 of labour per test candle — revalidating one SKU costs ₹3,995.56, which takes 1,998 candles to repay at ₹2. A wick shared across eight fragrances costs ₹12,564.48 with a bracketed plan (6,283 candles) or ₹18,012.46 in full (9,007). Then check that the ₹2 survives: half a point more fragrance to recover throw costs ₹3.58 a candle with Peach Melon Berry, and a modest return rate can cost the rest. If the net saving drops to ₹0.50, one SKU needs 7,992 candles. Switch only if the wick passes every safety line, the net saving holds, payback fits inside a threshold you set in advance, and you can keep buying the new wick.
One line: payback = revalidation cost ÷ net saving — and the net saving is ₹2 only if the new wick changes nothing else.
Price the switch before you make it. A one-SKU side-by-side on this page is 7 test candles in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Peach Melon Berry: ₹2,245.56 in CSI materials. With example labour it is ₹3,995.56 — 1,998 candles at your ₹2 saving before the change pays for itself.

The one formula that answers the title

A ₹2 saving is not a saving until it has paid for the tests that make it safe.

Your figure is ₹2 per candle — the new wick costs ₹2 less than the one you use now. That is a real saving, but it starts only after you have spent money proving the new wick works, because a wick change voids most of your burn results and you cannot ship on an unproven wick. So the question is a payback question, and it has a simple form:

The CSI principle
Payback in candles = one-off revalidation cost ÷ saving per candle.
Then compare that number with how many candles you will actually make on the new wick before something changes again. If payback is a small fraction of that, switch. If it is most of it, don't.

Both halves of the formula need honest inputs. The top — revalidation cost — is not just test materials; it includes the time to pour, burn and log, and it scales with how many fragrances run on that wick. The bottom — saving per candle — is ₹2 only if nothing else changes. If the new wick needs a slightly higher fragrance load, or produces even a few more returns, the ₹2 shrinks, and a smaller divisor makes payback much longer. The rest of this page builds both halves with real CSI prices and labelled example figures, and shows where each one usually goes wrong.

The two halves of the formula · what belongs in each
What to count
Half Include Leave out Where it goes wrong
Revalidation cost (top) Test materials, labour for pouring, burning and logging, retained samples, a second round if the first fails The wicks you would buy anyway for production Counting only materials; testing one fragrance when eight use the wick
Saving per candle (bottom) Wick price difference, minus any per-candle cost the new wick adds One-off costs (they belong on top) Assuming ₹2 survives unchanged: load changes, returns, burn-time claims
Horizon (the comparison) Candles you expect to make on the new wick before the next change Wishful volume Planning years ahead on a supplier you have used for a month

The top half: what revalidation actually costs

A wick change needs the same evidence however cheap the wick is. The matrix is the one used throughout this cluster: combustion results are REPEAT (flame, pool, soot, mushrooming, jar-side reading, throw, consumption, end of life), unlit results are KEEP (load, cold throw, storage appearance), and the label burn time is CONFIRM. The wick master checklist lists every line. Here we only need to price it.

Three scenarios cover most small businesses. The labour is an example ₹250.00 per test candle — pouring, curing, burning over several sessions, logging and weighing — which you replace with your own figure. Controls use your current wick from stock, so they add no wick cost; the new wicks are priced here as Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 10-packs purely to give the kit a real price.

8 SKUs, all full life 32 ₹10,012.46 ₹8,000.00 ₹18,012.46 9,007 candles

The one-SKU case is a thorough side-by-side: three candles on the current wick, three on the new, one retained, all burned to the end. The eight-SKU cases use the bracketing approach from the eight-fragrance post: every fragrance goes in front of a control, and only a bracket of three chosen from your records gets a full life (22 candles), against running a full life on all eight (32 candles). Notice how much the scope matters. A wick used across eight fragrances takes 6,283 to 9,007 candles to pay back at ₹2, against 1,998 for a single SKU.

Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 3 wicks 1 × 10 ₹59.00
White Matte Glass Jar 7 jars 2 × pack of 5 ₹708.00
Total 7 test candles ₹2,245.56
The top half people leave out. "The test only costs a few candles." The materials for one SKU are about two thousand rupees; the burning is the expensive part. A full-life test on a 200 g candle is many hours of attended burning per candle, and seven candles is a lot of evenings. Put a number on your time — even a low one — or payback will always look faster than it is.

The bottom half: does the ₹2 survive?

A saving of ₹2 is fragile. Anything the new wick adds per candle comes straight off it.

The wick price difference is only the starting point. If the new wick burns a little differently, the fix often costs money per candle, and at ₹2 there is very little room. Two examples, both labelled and both yours to replace. First, if testing shows you need half a percentage point more fragrance to match the old throw, a 200 g candle takes 1 g more oil and 1 g less wax. With Peach Melon Berry at the 1 kg rate (₹4.18 a gram) and Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, that is ₹3.58 a candle — more than the whole saving; you would be ₹1.58 a candle worse off. Second, returns: if an example one candle in 200 comes back and each return costs you an example ₹400.00 in replacement and postage, that is ₹2.00 a candle — the entire saving, gone.

Per 200 g candle · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · return figures are examples
What can come off the ₹2
Hidden per-candle cost Example Per candle Saving left
None — new wick behaves identically — ₹0.00 ₹2.00
+0.5 point fragrance load to recover throw 1 g Peach Melon Berry net of 1 g wax ₹3.58 −₹1.58
More returns 1 in 200 at ₹400.00 (example) ₹2.00 ₹0.00
Faster consumption, shorter label claim Relabel or reposition Hard to price Check before switching
Slower consumption, longer burn time Possible benefit — May support a better claim

That is why the net saving matters more than the headline. If the ₹2 turns into ₹0.50 once everything is counted, the one-SKU payback goes from 1,998 candles to 7,992. Only your own side-by-side can tell you whether the new wick adds anything per candle, which is one more reason the test is not optional — it measures the divisor as well as the safety.

The real CSI wick prices, compared

If you are weighing a switch within CSI's own range, here are the listed prices per wick. The differences are real; the wicks are not interchangeable. Each is a different product, and CSI publishes no construction details, burn data or size-equivalence for any of them. Moving between them is a full wick change with the full revalidation cost above, never a like-for-like swap. The equivalent-size post explains why.

Performance Wooden Wicks 10 ₹590.00 · 50 ₹2,360.00 · 100 ₹4,130.00 ₹59.00 · ₹47.20 · ₹41.30

Two things stand out. Every CSI cotton-type wick is priced flat per wick across its packs, so buying 1,000 instead of 10 buys stock security, not a lower rate. The one real pack discount is on the Wooden wicks, where the 100-pack is ₹41.30 a wick against ₹59.00 in a 10-pack — but even at the best rate a wooden wick costs several times a cotton one, so a move to wood is an aesthetic and product decision, never a cost saving. The cotton-to-wooden post covers what that move invalidates.

Payback against your volume

Payback in candles only means something next to your production rate. The table converts it to months at three example monthly volumes. Compare the result with how long you realistically expect to stay on the new wick before another change — a new jar, a supplier stock-out, a range refresh.

Months to pay back = payback candles ÷ candles made per month on that wick · volumes are examples
How long the ₹2 takes to repay the tests
Scenario Payback (candles) 300 a month 1,000 a month 3,000 a month
1 SKU, full side-by-side 1,998 6.7 months 2.0 months 0.7 months
8 SKUs, bracketed 6,283 20.9 months 6.3 months 2.1 months
8 SKUs, all full life 9,007 30.0 months 9.0 months 3.0 months
1 SKU, if the net saving is ₹0.50 7,992 26.6 months 8.0 months 2.7 months

At 300 candles a month on one SKU, a clean ₹2 saving repays the tests in about 6.7 months; at 3,000 a month, in under one. For a wick shared across eight fragrances at 300 candles a month in total, the bracketed plan takes about 20.9 months — and if the net saving slips to ₹0.50, the single SKU alone takes 26.6. Small makers switching wick for ₹2 often discover that the saving would take longer to earn than the supplier relationship lasts.

A rule of thumb you set yourself
Many businesses use a simple threshold such as "switch only if payback is under three months of that wick's volume". The number is yours — it reflects how stable your suppliers are and how much you trust the saving. Write it down before you run the numbers, so the numbers cannot talk you into it.

The decision rule

Apply in order · the switch must pass all four
Is the cheaper wick worth it?
Check Pass Fail
1 · Safety and performance No worse than the current wick on every line, full life, every fragrance in scope Stop — no saving justifies it
2 · Net saving Still clearly positive after any load change, returns or relabelling Stop, or renegotiate price
3 · Payback Payback candles ÷ monthly volume is under your written threshold Stay on the current wick
4 · Supply You can buy the new wick reliably in the quantities you need A saving you cannot buy next month is not a saving

Check 1 comes first even though this is a money page, because a cheaper wick that fails is not cheaper — it is a recall. The hotter-jar post explains why better throw never justifies a hotter burn, and the same logic applies to a lower price. Check 4 is the one people forget: a new supplier offering ₹2 less is also a new supplier, and if they cannot deliver next month, you face another change and another round of tests.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If you are switching to a CSI wick to save money, we would like the order. But at ₹2 a candle, a single SKU needs about two thousand candles to repay a thorough test, and a wick shared across a range needs several thousand. If your volume is small or your range is wide, the cheapest wick for you may be the one you already have. And if the saving depends on moving to our Wooden wicks, it isn't a saving at all.

If it passes: release and record the saving

1
Record the business caseRevalidation cost, net saving per candle, payback in candles and months, and the threshold you set. This is the part of the file that justifies the change later.
2
Record the evidenceEvery side-by-side sheet, for every fragrance in scope, with the control.
3
Update the formula cardsNew wick — supplier, product name, pack, order date — on each SKU that passed. SKUs not tested stay on the old wick.
4
Track the real savingAfter three months, compare actual wick spend, returns and any load change with the forecast. If the net saving is smaller than planned, you will know before the next decision.
5

The same arithmetic runs through the series whenever a cheaper material appears: the ₹15-per-candle wax post applies it to a wax change, and the ₹5,000-versus-₹3,500 fragrance post to oils at different loads. If you have already bought the cheaper wicks, the question has changed — the 5,000-wick post deals with stock that is already on the shelf.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A switch to our cheaper wicks would be good business for us. This page still shows that a ₹2 saving can take thousands of candles to repay, that hidden costs can wipe it out, and that our Wooden wicks never save money over cotton.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. Test kits, per-candle costs, payback candles and months are plain arithmetic you can check.

The ₹2 saving is the reader's figure. The ₹250.00 labour per test candle, one-in-200 returns at ₹400.00, the ₹0.50 net saving, the +0.5 point load change and the 300 / 1,000 / 3,000 monthly volumes are labelled examples to replace. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate payback on a cheaper candle material?
Payback in candles = one-off revalidation cost ÷ net saving per candle. Divide by your monthly volume on that material to get months, and compare with how long you expect to use it.
Is it worth changing wick supplier to save money?
Only if the net saving survives testing and repays it quickly. At ₹2 a candle, a one-SKU revalidation of ₹3,995.56 (example labour included) takes 1,998 candles; a range takes several thousand.
Which CSI wick is cheapest per wick?
Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90, then Eco Thick C2 at ₹9.44, Cotton Braided at ₹12.00 and Wooden from ₹41.30 (100-pack). They are different products, not substitutes — any switch needs full testing.
Are bigger wick packs cheaper per wick at CSI?
Not for Eco or Cotton Braided wicks — the price per wick is the same at every pack. Performance Wooden Wicks are the exception: ₹59.00 each in a 10-pack, ₹47.20 in a 50-pack and ₹41.30 in a 100-pack.
What hidden costs can cancel a wick saving?
A higher fragrance load to recover throw, more returns or complaints, relabelling a shorter burn time, and a second test round if the first fails. Each comes straight off the per-candle saving.
How much testing does a wick change need?
A side-by-side against your current wick, full life, for every fragrance that uses it — bracketed if the range is large. The eight-fragrance post shows how.
Payback before price
Price the tests, check the ₹2 survives, then compare payback with your volume.
