Fragrance-Specific Adhesion Testing
Adhesion is a property of the whole candle — jar, wax, oil and load. Screen every oil once in your production jar beside an unscented control, then investigate only the oils the jars flag. The cost scales with your problems, not your catalogue.
₹395.25
CSI materials per oil in an example 12-oil screen (Yankee jars, Soy Pearl, wicks, stickers), your own oils · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should adhesion testing be fragrance-specific? Yes, proportionately. A small screen for every oil in the production jar; a full test only for flagged oils.

Does oud cause more wet spots than citrus? No general rule. CSI publishes no adhesion data for any oil. Your jars can show it for your oud and your citrus.

Can I screen in a cheaper test jar? No. Adhesion depends on the jar. Screen in the exact jar you sell — fewer jars per oil if you must, never a different jar.

What does a screen cost? About ₹395.25 per oil in CSI materials for an example 12-oil screen, with your own oils. See the kits.
The short answer
Answer: Yes — screen every oil for adhesion in the production jar and wax, but investigate fully only the oils the screen flags.
Why: Each oil is a different mixture and is commonly described as changing how soy wax crystallises and contracts; a wax approved with one oil has not been approved with the next.
Method: 4 oils plus an unscented control per pour day, three numbered jars each, one melt and cooling row, house scale at 7 days and after a cycle; flagged oils go to a replicated pour and load ladder.
Fragrance-specific, but proportionate: screen every oil, test hard only the flagged ones Production jar and wax only · 3 jars per oil · an unscented control on every pour day · example: 12-oil collection 1. Every oil in the collection 12 oils · 3 jars each in the production jar 45 jars incl. controls 2. Screen read at 7 days + after a cycle house scale · same sheet for every oil pass or flag 3. Flagged oils only replicated pour (2 days, order reversed) oil-specific? 4. Confirmed oil-specific load ladder for that oil alone highest clean load 5. Approved per SKU jar · wax lot · load · date on the SKU record retain 3 candles Oud, citrus, vanilla: the family name does not decide. Every oil gets the same small screen in the same jar and wax; only the jars decide which oils need more. No CSI data ranks any oil for adhesion.
A proportionate, fragrance-specific adhesion policy: every oil gets the same small screen in the production jar and wax; only flagged oils go on to a replicated pour and a load ladder; approvals are recorded per SKU against jar, wax, load and date.
Straight answer
My oud candle pulls away from the glass more than my citrus candle — should adhesion testing be fragrance-specific?
Yes — but proportionately. Adhesion is a property of the whole candle: jar, wax, oil and load together. Each fragrance oil is a different mixture and is commonly described as changing how soy wax crystallises and contracts, so a wax approved with your citrus has not been approved with your oud. First confirm the difference: unscented, oud and citrus from one melt, three numbered jars each, in your production jar, cooled in one row. If the oud spots and the others do not, give every oil in the collection the same small screen — three jars at its production load beside an unscented control poured the same day — and investigate fully only the oils the screen flags. Never screen in a cheaper test jar; the result will not transfer. CSI publishes no adhesion data for any oil, so family names (oud, citrus, vanilla) decide nothing. In an example 12-oil screen in Yankee 130 ml jars with Natural Soy Pearl, CSI materials come to ₹395.25 per oil, with your own oils.
One line: screen every oil once in the production jar; investigate only the flagged ones; record each approval.
Start with the production jar, not a test jar: nine Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml jars at ₹47.20 each — ₹424.80 — for an unscented, oud and citrus pour from one melt. A result in any other jar would not transfer to the candle you sell.

Should adhesion testing be fragrance-specific? The short answer

Yes — every oil should be screened in your jar and wax. No — not every oil needs a full test.

Your oud pulling away from the glass more than your citrus is a useful warning, not a verdict. Fragrance oil dissolved in soy wax is commonly described as changing how the wax crystallises and contracts as it cools, and each oil is a different mixture, so two oils can set differently against the same glass. That alone is a reason to treat adhesion as a property of the candle — jar, wax, oil and load together — rather than of the wax. A wax approved with one fragrance has not been approved with the next one.

But a fragrance-specific policy does not mean a full replicated test for every SKU. It means a small, identical screen for every oil — three jars in the production jar and wax, beside an unscented control poured the same day — and a full investigation only for the oils the screen flags. That way the cost scales with the number of problems, not the number of fragrances. Nothing on CSI's product pages ranks oils for adhesion: we publish no adhesion, composition or contraction data for any of them. So a family name — oud, citrus, vanilla — is not a reason to skip or to fear an oil; the screen is.

Before screening a collection, confirm the oud-versus-citrus difference on its own: unscented, Woody Oud and Citrus Lemon from one melt, three jars each, in your production jar. This page works the example in CSI's Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with Natural Soy Pearl Wax, at an illustrative 110 g fill and 8% load — 8.8 g of oil per jar. The Yankee jar's fill weight is not published (130 ml is its volume), so weigh your own test pour and replace the figure.

The CSI principle
Adhesion belongs to the candle, not to the wax.
Jar, wax, oil and load together. Change any one and you have a new candle to screen.

Why an oud and a citrus can set differently

Treat what follows as general candle-making knowledge, not CSI measurement. Molten soy wax organises into crystals and shrinks as it cools; where it grips the glass it stays attached, and where it lets go it leaves the thin air gap that reads as a wet spot through clear glass. Fragrance oils are mixtures of many aromatic materials. Some oils are commonly described as lighter and more volatile in character, others as heavier and more resinous, and makers often report that different oils change the set of the same wax in different ways. That is a reason to test each oil, not a rule that heavy oils spot and light ones do not. Your oud spotting more than your citrus in your jar is a fact about your candles; it does not tell you how a different oud or a different citrus will behave.

There are also non-oil reasons an oud SKU can look worse. Oud candles are often sold as the darker, more premium line and poured in deeper-coloured wax, which makes every gap more visible — the dark-candle post covers that. They may be poured at a higher load because the maker wants more depth. They may be poured in smaller, less frequent batches, at a different time of day. Before you write "oud = problem" into your records, rule those out. The two-day replicated pour is the stronger version of the confirmation test below if one pour day does not settle it.

Write every oil's load as grams per jar
Fragrance-specific records only work if the load is recorded the same way for every SKU. Use CSI's convention — oil as a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L) — and write grams per jar: 8.8 g in a 110 g candle at 8%. If one SKU's recipe says "80 g per kilo of wax", convert it: that is 7.41% of the finished weight, not 8%.

Step one: confirm the oud–citrus difference in your production jar

Nine jars, one melt, one afternoon — and the unscented arm decides whether either oil is to blame.

Pour unscented, oud and citrus side by side, three numbered jars each, from one melt of one wax lot into one delivery of jars. CSI publishes no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or adhesion statement for Natural Soy Pearl Wax, so follow the wax maker's instructions (ask CSI on WhatsApp for what is available), choose one pour temperature, measure it with the pen thermometer for every arm and write it down. The Yankee jar's page publishes no hot-pour limit either — check your jar supplier's guidance before pouring hot. The 8% load here is a labelled test setting, not a ceiling or a recommendation for this wax.

1
Clean and number nine jarsU1–U3, O1–O3, C1–C3 on the bases, four side marks each. Clean every jar the same way — a light mist of isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe — and let them dry completely away from heat; isopropyl alcohol is flammable.
2
Melt once and divideWeigh 330 g of wax for the unscented arm and 303.6 g each for oud and citrus. Add 26.4 g of each oil by weight. Stir all three portions — the unscented one too — for the same time.
3
Pour at one measured temperatureRead the pen thermometer immediately before each arm and pour all three within a few minutes. Write the readings on the sheet.
4
Cool in one alternating rowU1, O1, C1, U2, O2, C2, U3, O3, C3, evenly spaced on one surface, away from the AC vent, the window and any cold stone. Note the room temperature.
5
Photograph on scheduleFour marked sides of each jar, same background and distance, at pour day, 48 hours, 7 days, after a temperature cycle and 30 days — labelled example checkpoints.

If the oud jars spot and the citrus and unscented jars do not, you have confirmed an oil difference in this jar and wax — and, more importantly, you have proved that a fragrance-specific screen catches something a wax-level approval would have missed. If all three arms spot, fragrance is not your main problem: go to glass, cleaning, temperature and cooling. The full process diagnosis walks that ladder.

The common mistake: screening oils in a cheaper test jar. A maker screens twelve oils in small jars to save money, approves them all, then pours the first batch of the 130 ml production candle and finds spots. Glass, shape, wall and fill height can all change adhesion. Fix: screen in the exact jar you sell. If the production jar is expensive, screen fewer jars per oil — never a different jar. Why all 200 g jars do not behave alike explains why.

Step two: the collection screen

Once you accept that adhesion is oil-specific, run every oil in the collection through the same screen, in batches small enough to pour carefully. A practical rhythm is 4 oils plus one unscented control per pour day: 15 jars, one melt, one cooling row. For the example 12-oil collection that is 3 pour days and 45 jars. Every oil gets three jars at its own production load, every pour day has its own unscented control, and every jar is scored on the same house sheet. Oils that pass go straight onto the approved list for that jar and wax; oils that are flagged go on to a replicated pour and a load ladder.

Copy one row per oil per pour day · house scale (example, yours to set): 0 none · 1 under 5% of glass · 2 5–15% · 3 15–30% · 4 over 30% — not an industry standard
Collection screen sheet — Yankee 130 ml, Natural Soy Pearl
Pour day Oil Load (g per jar) Pour °C Jar 1 at 7 d Jar 2 at 7 d Jar 3 at 7 d After cycle (worst jar) Control same day (worst jar) Pass / flag
1 Unscented control 0 ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ — Day valid? Y/N
1 Oud (your oil) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
1 Citrus (your oil) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
1 Oil 3 … 4 ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
2, 3 … Repeat with a fresh control each day

Set the flag rule before the first pour. A working rule you might adopt: an oil is flagged if two of its three jars grade 2 or higher at 7 days or after the cycle while the same day's control grades 1 or lower. If the control itself spots, the whole pour day is invalid — the problem is the day, the glass or the cooling, and no oil from that day is judged. There is no industry threshold for any of this; it is your house standard. What to record when comparing adhesion helps you set it, and the temperature-cycle test gives the cycle step its detail. An example cycle is 8 hours warm and 16 hours at room temperature, three to five times, using your own logged storeroom or courier figures and keeping the warm phase well below CSI 468's stated 50–53°C melting point — the only soy-wax melting point CSI publishes.

Screen every oil once. Investigate only the ones the jars point at. Record every approval against the jar and wax it was earned in.

The Yankee jar is listed as a single jar at ₹47.20; no pack price is published, so ask on WhatsApp for larger quantities.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Screening twelve oils sounds like a reason to buy twelve new oils. It is not. The screen tests the oils you already sell, in the jar and wax you already use; the only CSI materials it needs are jars, wax and wicks. And when an oil is flagged, the first fix is a lower load of that oil — which sells less fragrance — not a replacement oil and not a new wax. The 15 g sizes in Kit 1 exist only so you can repeat this page's example; your own bottles are better evidence.

What a fragrance-specific policy is worth

Put the screen against the risk it removes. At production rates — Natural Soy Pearl at the 5 kg rate, oils at the 1 kg rate, the Yankee jar at ₹47.20 and an Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90 as the example wick line — an oud candle in this example costs ₹135.96 in materials and a citrus ₹121.01. A 100-jar oud batch is ₹13,596.43 of materials. If an untested oil spots in an example 20% of that batch, ₹2,719.29 of materials sits in jars you must hide, discount or re-pour — before labour, labels or complaints. The screen for that oil cost ₹395.25 in CSI materials.

Citrus ₹24.92 ₹42.99 ₹53.10 ₹121.01 ₹12,101.14 ₹2,420.23

The spotted share is an example to show the arithmetic, not a CSI result — use your own counts. The jar is the largest single line in both candles, which is why spotted clear jars are so costly: the glass you bought to show off the wax is the thing the defect spoils. Calculating the cost of cosmetic rejects carries this further.

The decision rule: what to test, and when

Apply it to the confirmation pour first, then to the collection screen. Stop at the first line that is true.

Keep the approved list as a simple table: SKU, oil, grams per jar, jar, wax and lot, pour temperature, screen date, result. A jar or wax change voids the approvals that depend on it — the jar-supplier change post and the supplier-change test policy cover that — and a new oil adds a row. Three retained, unlit candles from each approved screen make the best reference when a future batch looks worse.

Where to go next

This post owns the policy question: whether adhesion approval must be per fragrance, and how to make that affordable. The section hub separates any oil from the scented routine; the load post and the one-difficult-fragrance post deal with an oil once it is flagged; the dye post adds colour as a second variable. When you later compare waxes, change one variable at a time.

Different jar or wax? The screen does not change; only the grams and prices do. Oils are in Fragrance Oils, container waxes in Candle Wax, clear jars in Glass Jars and the IPA spray in Candle Accessories.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A fragrance supplier could use this question to sell replacement oils. This page tests the oils you already own in the jar you already sell, needs only jars, wax and wicks from us, puts a lower load before any new purchase and says plainly that we publish no adhesion data for any oil.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 7 October 2026. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 are CSI live pricing, re-checked 7 October 2026; Natural Soy Pearl was re-checked 1 October 2026. Jar, Isopropyl Alcohol Spray and jar-range prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 7 October 2026; wicks were re-checked 4 October 2026, including the Eco Thin C1 10-pack being out of stock. Every candle split, kit total, per-jar and per-candle figure on this page is arithmetic on those listed prices, shown to two decimals so you can check it.

Jar counts per arm, photo checkpoints, the scoring scale, glass-warming and temperature-cycle settings, fill weights for jars without a published fill, and the pour-loss allowance are labelled working practices or examples, not industry standards — no industry figure exists for an acceptable amount of wet spotting. The 110 g Yankee fill, the 12-oil collection, the 100-jar batch and the 20% spotted share are examples the reader replaces. Frequently asked questions

Do different fragrance oils affect candle glass adhesion?
They can. Each oil is a different mixture and is commonly described as changing how soy wax sets. Screen each oil in your production jar beside an unscented control.
Do woody or oud fragrances cause wet spots?
No general rule can be stated and CSI publishes no adhesion data for any oil. Your oud may spot in your jar and wax; a nine-jar confirmation pour shows whether it does.
Do I need to test every fragrance in my candle range?
Screen every one, briefly: three jars at its production load beside a same-day unscented control. Test fully only the oils that are flagged.
Can I test candle adhesion in a smaller jar to save money?
No. Glass, shape, wall and fill height can all change adhesion. Screen in the jar you sell. The container-shape post explains why.
How many test jars per fragrance oil?
A labelled working practice: three per oil as a screen, plus three unscented controls per pour day. Flagged oils get more.
What should I record for each fragrance's adhesion approval?
SKU, oil, grams per jar, jar, wax and lot, pour temperature, date, scores at each checkpoint and the result. A jar or wax change voids approvals that depend on it.
Screen every oil, once
Approve each fragrance in the jar you sell — and only investigate the ones that fail.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Worked example: illustrative 110 g fill in the Yankee 130 ml jar (fill not published; weigh yours), Natural Soy Pearl (no fragrance ceiling, temperature or adhesion statement published; 8% is a labelled test setting), Woody Oud and Citrus Lemon. Working practices: 3 jars per oil, an unscented control of 3 jars per pour day, 4 oils per pour day, 5% pour loss, photo checkpoints at pour day, 48 hours, 7 days, after a temperature cycle and 30 days; example cycle 8 hours warm / 16 hours room for 3–5 cycles. The 12-oil collection, the 100-jar batch and the 20% spotted share are examples. Production-rate costs use Soy Pearl at the 5 kg rate, oils at the 1 kg rate, the Yankee jar at ₹47.20 and Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90 as the example wick line (wick size for this jar is not published). What CSI's product pages state (quoted as claims, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — fragrance load up to 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), stir 2 minutes, cure at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, and "excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces reduces wet spots and pull-away"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range, "excellent glass adhesion", single-pour, low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, "formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish"; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperature, cure or adhesion statement published. All three adhesion claims are the same claim, so they rank nothing. Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — fill approximately 150 g, "safe for hot pour up to 85°C"; glass thickness not published. CSI publishes no adhesion, wet-spot, shrinkage or contraction data for any wax, oil, dye or jar; no glass thickness or internal diameter for any jar; no dye dose per kg; no wick size for any jar; and no industry acceptance threshold for wet spots exists — every acceptance line on this page is a labelled house standard the reader sets. Wet spots are described as commonly understood in candle making: areas where wax has separated from the glass, leaving a thin air gap that looks darker through clear glass. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
