The tape measure says nothing changed. Inside, the pool is smaller, the wick sits closer to the glass, and the wall holds more glass. Keep your formulation. Treat the wick-and-jar system as new, and burn it to the end.
−10.0%
melt-pool area when a 3 mm wall becomes 5 mm on an 8.4 cm jar (illustrative) · glass per cm of wall +63%
Quick answers — read this first
Is a thicker-glass jar with the same outside a new candle system? Partly. The formulation is unchanged — keep it. The burn system (wick + pool + glass) has changed on two counts, so repeat every wick-and-jar test, including full-life burns.

How much does the inside shrink? By twice the wall change. Illustration: 8.4 cm outside, 3 → 5 mm wall = 7.8 → 7.4 cm inside, melt pool 47.78 cm² → 43.01 cm² (−10.0%), 200 g stands 5.3 mm taller.

Which way does the wick risk go? Toward too strong: a wick sized for a bigger pool can run deeper and hotter in a smaller one, closer to a heavier wall. Bracket down, not up.

How many candles and what cost? Nine — 3 old jar, 3 new jar on the approved wick, 3 new jar on a smaller bracket — with at least one of each burned to the end. CSI materials: ₹2,153.50. See the kit.
The short answer
Geometry: Inside = outside − 2 × wall. 8.4 cm outside: 3 mm wall → 7.8 cm (47.78 cm²); 5 mm wall → 7.4 cm (43.01 cm²), −10.0%. Glass annulus 7.63 cm² → 12.41 cm² per cm.
Verdict: KEEP formula tests; REPEAT all wick-and-jar lines and full-life burns; add a NEW jar reading after snuffing.
Decision: No worse than the control on every safety line. If both wicks run hotter, the jar fails, not the wick. General list: if you change only the jar.

Illustrative cross-sections drawn to scale: both jars measure 8.4 cm outside; the dark bands are the glass wall. A 5 mm wall instead of 3 mm leaves a 7.4 cm inside instead of 7.8 cm, so the same 200 g (labelled 0.88 g/ml) stands taller over a 10.0% smaller pool, inside 63% more glass per centimetre. Geometry only — no thermal or burn result is implied.
Straight answer
My replacement jar has the same external diameter but thicker glass and a smaller internal diameter — should I treat it as a new candle system?
Partly — treat the burn system as new, keep the formulation. Thicker glass with the same outside diameter comes entirely out of the inside, and because the wall is on both sides the internal diameter falls by twice the wall change. In our illustration — 8.4 cm outside, wall 3 mm → 5 mm — the inside drops from 7.8 to 7.4 cm and the melt pool from 47.78 cm² to 43.01 cm², −10.0%. The same 200 g stands 5.3 mm taller, the wick sits 2 mm closer to the glass all round, and the wall contains 63% more glass per centimetre. Your wax, oil, load and cure have not changed, so compatibility, cure and cold-throw results stay valid. Everything the wick does in the jar should be repeated: pool, flame, soot, jar readings (add one after snuffing), throw, consumption, and a full-life burn on every set. Because the pool is smaller, test for a wick that is now too strong: bracket with a smaller wick. Nine candles cost ₹2,153.50 in CSI materials.
One line: the tape measure reads the outside; the wick reads the inside — thicker glass shrinks the pool by twice the wall change.
Treating the thicker-glass jar as a new candle system means a wick comparison with full-life burns. Nine 200 g candles at 8% need about 151.2 g of oil and 1,738.8 g of wax with a 5% allowance: Sandalwood 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g (₹867.30) and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 2 × 1 kg (₹1,014.80) in CSI stock. If your approved formula uses a different oil or wax, pour it instead — only the jar should differ.

Why the outside measurement misleads

Customers see the outside of the jar. The wick only ever sees the inside.

A replacement jar with the same external diameter looks like a like-for-like swap: it fits the same lid, the same box, the same shelf and the same label. That is exactly why this change slips through. If the glass is thicker, all of the extra thickness comes out of the inside, and the internal diameter — the one that sets the size of the melt pool — shrinks by twice the wall change, because the wall is on both sides. Your title gives no numbers, so this page uses a labelled illustration: both jars 8.4 cm outside, the old with a 3 mm wall and the new with a 5 mm wall.

Candle weight if filled to the old line 200.0 g 180.0 g −20.0 g

Two things move at once, and they are the reason this is a bigger question than a simple width change. The melt pool gets 10.0% smaller, so the approved wick now has less surface to melt and sits 2 mm closer to the glass all round. And the wall itself contains 63% more glass per centimetre of height — the ring of glass in cross-section grows from 7.63 cm² to 12.41 cm². That is geometry, not a thermal measurement: CSI publishes no thermal data for any jar, and how much heat a particular glass holds depends on the glass itself. But in general practice a heavier wall is commonly described as warming up more slowly and holding heat for longer, which is why the jar-side lines of your test deserve more attention here than in a simple width change.

6 mm 7.2 cm 40.72 cm² −14.8% 5.58 cm 14.70 cm² +93%

Each extra millimetre of wall takes about 5% off the melt-pool area in a jar this size and adds roughly a third more glass to the wall. So a supplier who says "same size, just a sturdier glass" may be describing a candle with a noticeably smaller pool. The mirror image — same inside, thinner glass — changes only the wall term. For a change that is purely internal diameter, the 7.6 → 7.9 cm hub post has the sensitivity table.

How to measure wall thickness without cutting a jar
Measure the outside diameter with a caliper at the fill-line height, then the inside diameter at the same height with the caliper's inside jaws. Wall = (outside − inside) ÷ 2. Do it at two positions at right angles, on five jars from the lot, and write down the range. Moulded glass is rarely uniform, and a jar that is 5 mm on one side and 3 mm on the other will also push the melt pool off-centre.
The CSI principle
Same outside, thicker glass: the pool shrinks by twice the wall change, and the wall gains mass.
Two variables, both in the wick-and-jar system. That is what makes this a new candle system for testing purposes, even though the formula has not changed.

Is it a new candle system? The answer, split

It helps to separate two meanings of "system". The formulation — wax, oil, load, dye, cure — has not changed and does not need to be redeveloped. The burn system — the wick in that formula in that jar — has changed on two counts: a smaller pool and a heavier wall. So the honest answer is: treat the burn system as new, keep the formulation. In practice that means repeating every wick-and-jar test, including the full-life burn, rather than just confirming the early burns as you might for a 3 mm diameter change.

Retest matrix · same outside diameter · thicker glass · smaller inside · formula unchanged
Formula tests stay; burn-system tests start again
Test Verdict Why
Oil–wax compatibility at your load KEEP Formula unchanged
Cure schedule, cold throw KEEP Formula unchanged
Appearance after cure (tops, glass adhesion) CONFIRM Heavier glass cools differently after pouring
Time to full melt pool REPEAT Pool −10.0% — a smaller pool can reach the wall sooner
Melt-pool depth REPEAT Smaller pool, same wick: depth can change
Flame height, mushrooming, soot REPEAT Wick may be relatively over-sized for the pool
Jar-side reading, every burn REPEAT Wick closer to glass; heavier wall
Jar-side reading after the burn ends NEW How long the heavier wall stays warm after the flame is out
Hot throw, fixed room REPEAT Pool size changes release
Consumption, g per hour REPEAT New label burn time
Full-life burn to end of usable wax REPEAT, every set Late burns are where a heavier wall and a closer flame combine

The NEW line is specific to this jar. A thicker wall is commonly described as holding heat after the flame is out, which matters for how the jar feels to a customer who picks it up after snuffing it. You never needed to measure that before because your old jar and your old test were matched. Add one reading five minutes after extinguishing, at the same point on the glass, with the same thermometer. Compare it with the control; there is no absolute number to hit, and CSI does not publish one.

"The pool is smaller, so the wick has an easier job — nothing can go wrong." An easier job for the wick is not the same thing as a safer candle. A wick sized to melt a 47.78 cm² surface, dropped into a 43.01 cm² surface, can deliver more heat than that pool needs: a deeper pool, a taller flame, more carbon on the wick, and a flame 2 mm closer to glass that now holds more heat. Some candles will be fine. The only way to know which yours is, is to burn it next to the old jar, all the way down.

The test: nine candles, full-life on every set

With a smaller pool, the question is not "is the wick strong enough?" but "is it now too strong?"

Because the pool is smaller, the sensible bracket goes down, not up. In the worked example the approved wick is Eco Thick C2 and the bracket is Eco Thin C1 — the only two Eco sizes CSI lists. We do not claim either is right for this jar or that they are one step apart for your wax; if your wick comes from a range with more sizes, bracket with the next size down in that range. All three sets go to the end of life, because the late burns are where this particular change is most likely to show.

1
Measure the lot, not the sampleRecord outside and inside diameters and wall thickness on five new jars and five old. Use the thickest-walled new jars for the test candles; they are the worst case for this change.
2
Pour nine from one melt3 × old jar, approved wick (control) · 3 × new jar, approved wick · 3 × new jar, bracket wick. 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per 200 g candle at 8%. In CSI 464, CSI's guidance is to melt and pour at 80–90°C — confirm on the product page.
3
Cure on one shelfYour usual cure for the formula, for example 7 days as a labelled checkpoint. Check tops and glass adhesion before the first burn; heavier glass sometimes pulls away differently as it cools.
4
Burn in cycles with two jar readingsAbout 3–4 hours per burn (a commonly used cycle; label it), full cool-down between. Record the jar-side reading during the burn and five minutes after extinguishing, same point, same thermometer.
5
Take every set to the endContinue at least one candle from each set to the end of usable wax, in cycles. Watch the last third closely: flame, pool depth, the glass near the base.
6
Score against the control, then decideEvery safety line must be no worse than the old jar. Apply the rule below and write the result onto the product record.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A thicker-glass jar does not call for a new wax, a new oil or a stronger fragrance, and it is not a reason to buy a wholesale quantity of anything from us. If you have approved stock of your own formula, pour the test from it. What this change does call for is patience: nine candles burned to the end take longer than a weekend, and that time is the real cost.

Decision rule

CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit. The rule is relative: no worse than the approved control on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one). Set tolerances for the performance lines before you read the data.

Decision rule · "tolerance" = the figure you wrote down before testing
Reading a thicker-glass test
What the new jar shows Decision Next step
Approved wick: every safety line no worse than control, performance within tolerance, clean to the end PASS — same wick Release; record wall thickness and inside diameter as part of the jar spec
Approved wick runs deeper or hotter; bracket wick matches control on every safety line PASS — bracket wick Release on the bracket wick after its full-life candle passes
Both wicks run hotter than control after snuffing, or near the base FAIL — jar The wall, not the wick, is the difference; reject the jar or ask the supplier for the old glass
Results vary widely between new jars ESCALATE Wall thickness varies within the lot; measure more jars before deciding
A smaller pool is not a smaller risk. Test a thicker jar for the wick being too strong, not just too weak.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

A FAIL on the jar line is a legitimate result, not a failure of your testing. If both wicks leave the glass warmer than the control, a third wick is unlikely to fix a wall problem, and the right conversation is with the jar supplier. The alternative-container post shows how to score other candidates quickly so that conversation does not stall production.

Record the jar as a specification, not a name

This change happened because the jar was specified by its outside and its name. Close that gap now. Your jar record should carry the outside diameter, the inside diameter at the fill line, the wall thickness range, the base thickness, the internal height and the fill weight — all measured by you, with the date and supplier. The reproducibility-record post shows the format, and the approved-supplier list post explains how to stop purchasing from accepting a "same size" jar without those numbers.

Jar specification · example entries from this page's illustration
The six numbers that define a jar for your candle
Field Old jar New jar Who measures
Outside diameter at fill line 8.4 cm 8.4 cm You, caliper
Inside diameter at fill line 7.8 cm 7.4 cm You, caliper inside jaws
Wall thickness (range over 5 jars) 3 mm 5 mm Calculated
Base thickness measure measure You — see the thick-base post
Internal height measure measure You, depth gauge
Fill weight at your line 200 g weigh a test pour You, scale

Base thickness is on that list for a reason: jars made with heavier walls are often heavier at the base too. If yours is, the end-of-life part of the test carries even more weight — the thicker-base post covers that directly. For the general list of what to retest after any jar change, see the only-the-jar post.

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. A thicker-glass jar that arrived with the festive stock needs full-life burns before release, so start now. Send us the outside and inside measurements and your formula on WhatsApp and we will help you build the test kit from listed stock. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
Plan the thicker-glass test

If your new jar is thicker-walled and tapers inward toward the base, the smaller pool gets smaller still as it burns down — the narrowing-jar post works that case. If the glass is the same thickness but frosted or coated, the geometry is unchanged and the test changes shape instead: the frosted-glass post. And if the new jar is simply narrower inside with the same wall, the maths on the same-weight post runs in reverse.

Measuring CSI jars as candidates? The White Matte Glass Jar (₹354.00 for 5), 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (₹200.60 for 5) and Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml (₹47.20 each) are listed, but CSI does not publish their glass thickness, base thickness, internal diameters or fill weights. Measure a sample with the table above before comparing it with your jar. See all glass jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not jars or thermal data. This page says plainly that a thicker-glass jar needs no new wax or oil from anyone, and that the right result of a test can be "reject the jar" rather than "buy a different wick".

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, rechecked 25 September 2026. Diameters and wall thicknesses are illustrations; internal diameter, melt-pool area, glass annulus and fill height are plain geometry from them. The glass figures are areas, not heat measurements.

The 200 g fill comes from the pattern of this series; the 8% load, 0.88 g/ml wax factor, 5% allowance, three-candle sets, 3–4 hour cycles, 7-day cure and five-minute after-snuff reading are labelled working practices. CSI does not publish jar dimensions, glass thickness, thermal behaviour, wick charts or numeric safety limits. WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for help, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Does thicker glass affect how a candle burns?
It can, in two ways: if the outside stays the same, the inside and the melt pool get smaller; and a heavier wall is commonly described as warming and cooling more slowly. Neither is predictable enough to skip a side-by-side.
How do I find the internal diameter of a candle jar?
Measure it directly with the inside jaws of a caliper at the fill line, or subtract twice the wall thickness from the outside diameter. Check five jars; moulded glass varies.
Should I use a smaller wick in a jar with thicker glass?
If the inside diameter is smaller, test a smaller bracket wick alongside your approved one — do not switch on instinct. Approve whichever matches the control on every safety line.
Why is my candle jar getting hotter with the new container?
A common cause is a smaller inside diameter with the same wick, which puts the flame closer to the glass over a smaller pool. Compare against the old jar and see the decision rule above.
Do I need to redo fragrance testing for a thicker jar?
No for compatibility, load and cold throw; yes for hot throw, which changes with pool size. The only-the-jar post lists every line.
How do I compare two candle jars that look the same size?
Measure the inside, not the outside: inside diameter at the fill line, wall thickness, base thickness, internal height and fill weight. The 1,000-candle post has a full measurement sheet.

Same outside is not the same candle. Measure the wall, keep the formula, and burn the new system to the end.
