My Silicone Mould Holds 240 g of Water — How Do I Estimate How Much Pillar Wax Is Required for Each Finished Candle?
Aktie
Why not 240 g of wax? Water is about 1 g per ml, and solid soy wax is lighter. Wax also contracts as it cools, which is why pillars sink around the wick and need a top-up pour. The water figure is volume. The wax figure is weight.
What does the wax cost per candle? At ₹0.60 a gram for Soy Pillar Wax, about ₹123.84–₹129.60 per unscented candle. For our illustrative weighed candle of 209 g, ₹125.40. A scented candle uses less wax, because oil takes part of the weight.
How much wax for 60 of them? On the weighed 209 g with 2 test candles and 5% loss: 13,605.90 g unscented (1 × 10 kg + 4 × 1 kg, ₹8,400.00), or 12,789.55 g of wax + 816.35 g of oil at a 6% labelled test load.
Water to wax: the conversion
Weighing water is the right way to measure a mould you have never used. It is cheap, repeatable and does not waste wax. The number it gives you is a volume: 240 g of water is about 240 ml of space inside the mould up to the line you filled to. What you need for the wax order is a weight of set wax. Two physical facts sit between the two. Solid wax weighs less per millilitre than water, and liquid wax contracts as it cools, which is why pillars sink around the wick. Both push the wax figure below the water figure.
The same logic applies to melt containers, glass jars and every other vessel measured with water. I Want to Make 1,000 Wax Melt Clamshells but Don't Know Their Actual Fill Weight — How Should I Measure Capacity Before Calculating Wax Requirements? applies it to a thousand melt containers, and My Jar Holds 180 g of Water — How Do I Estimate the Wax Fill Weight Before Buying Wax for 500 Jars? applies it to a jar that holds 180 g of water. What changes for a pillar is the top-up and the trimming. A jar candle is finished when it sets, but a pillar is not finished until it is topped up, unmoulded and levelled.
How much the factor matters
It is tempting to pick a factor and move on. Here is what each value in the working range means for one candle and for a 60-candle order. The last column compares each with the illustrative weighed candle of 209 g.
| Factor (g wax per ml) | Wax per candle | Wax cost per candle | Wax for 60 candles | vs weighed candle × 60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.85 | 204 g | ₹122.40 | 12,240 g | −300 g |
| 0.86 | 206.40 g | ₹123.84 | 12,384 g | −156 g |
| 0.87 | 208.80 g | ₹125.28 | 12,528 g | −12 g |
| 0.88 | 211.20 g | ₹126.72 | 12,672 g | +132 g |
| 0.89 | 213.60 g | ₹128.16 | 12,816 g | +276 g |
| 0.90 | 216 g | ₹129.60 | 12,960 g | +420 g |
Across the table the estimate moves by 12 g a candle, from 204 g to 216 g. On one candle that is ₹7.20 of wax and nothing to worry about. On sixty candles it is 720 g, the difference between two bag combinations. On six hundred it is 7,200 g. That is why the factor is only for planning a test. Once you have poured and weighed one real candle, the factor has done its job. The weighed figure replaces it.
The test pour that settles it
Pour the test candle exactly as you will pour production: the same wax, load, temperature and fill line. Temperatures are the wax maker's instruction, so follow the Soy Pillar Wax product page. Weigh the jug before and after each pour to record what went in. Our illustrative test went like this:
| Stage | Weight | Running total | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| First pour | 197 g | 197 g | Poured to the line, left to set; a sinkhole forms around the wick |
| Top-up pour | 18 g | 215 g | Fills the sinkhole and any cavity that opened as the wax shrank |
| Trimmed off | −6 g | 209 g | Levelled base, excess wick-end wax, seam flash |
| Finished candle | 209 g | — | Measured factor 209 ÷ 240 = 0.871 |
| Wax consumed | 215 g | — | Of which 6 g comes off as trimmings (remeltable) |
Two numbers come out of this, and you need both. The finished weight (209 g) is what you quote, label and cost against. The wax consumed (215 g) is what the candle actually takes from the bag. The 6 g of trimmings can usually be remelted into the next batch, which is why most makers plan on the finished weight and cover the rest with a loss allowance. If your trimmings go in the bin, for example because they carry dust from the bench, plan on the consumed figure instead. I Need 1,000 Fragranced Mould Candles — How Do I Calculate Wax and Fragrance When Each Candle Loses a Small Amount During Trimming and Finishing? builds trimming loss explicitly into a thousand-candle order.
| Load | Finished candle | Fragrance oil | Pillar wax | Wax cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unscented | 209 g | 0 g | 209 g | ₹125.40 |
| 6% | 209 g | 12.54 g | 196.46 g | ₹117.88 |
| 8% | 209 g | 16.72 g | 192.28 g | ₹115.37 |
The scented rows use less wax, because the oil takes part of the finished weight. That is CSI's convention throughout this series: oil = weight × load, wax = weight − oil. The 6% and 8% loads are labelled test values. No fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax is published in our data. Check the product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. In general practice freestanding candles are more sensitive to load than jar candles, because any oil that seeps out ends up on the surface of the candle. Test a scented pillar before committing a batch.
From one candle to sixty
Take the weighed 209 g as the per-candle figure and run the usual stack. Here we use sixty candles for a small corporate or festive order, two extra test candles (a second test after any adjustment, plus a retained sample), and a 5% loss allowance for jug residue, drips and the occasional failed unmould. The allowances are working assumptions.
| Version | Finished weight to plan | Oil | Pillar wax | Wax bags | Wax cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unscented | 13,605.90 g | — | 13,605.90 g | 1 × 10 kg + 4 × 1 kg | ₹8,400.00 |
| Scented at 6% (labelled test load) | 13,605.90 g | 816.35 g | 12,789.55 g | 1 × 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg | ₹7,800.00 |
The mould count matters too. A single mould makes one candle per pour-set-unmould cycle. How many cycles you get in a day depends on the wax, the room temperature and the pillar's size, and none of that is published. Time a test candle from pour to clean release and plan from that. If sixty candles must be ready in a week, you may need several moulds. I'm Producing Several Different Mould Candle Designs — How Do I Calculate the Combined Wax Requirement When Every Mould Has a Different Fill Weight? works through mould cycles for several designs, and I Need 500 Bubble Candles for Wedding Favours — How Much Pillar Wax Should I Purchase After Accounting for Failed Unmoulding and Broken Candles? does it for a 500-piece bubble-candle order.

If you want a sweeter profile, Vanilla Bean covers the same 816.35 g with 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g for ₹6,470.00. Wick size for a pillar of this weight is not published, and a pillar that tunnels or drowns its wick is a failed product whatever it weighs. Burn-test the test candle before the run. Moulds you do not already own, labels, boxes and freight are extra and are not in these totals.
Once you know the per-candle figure for each mould, the rest of the cluster takes over. I Need 100 Silicone-Mould Candles but Each Finished Shape Has a Different Weight — How Do I Calculate Wax Requirements Accurately Before Buying Bulk Wax? combines several shapes in one order. I Need 1,000 Decorative Mould Candles with No Fragrance — How Much Pillar Wax Should I Buy if Each Finished Candle Weighs 120 g? scales an unscented design to a thousand pieces, and I Have 25 Kg of Pillar Wax — How Many 150 g Mould Candles Can I Realistically Produce After Accounting for Spills and Trimming Waste? works the other way, from a fixed 25 kg of wax to a number of candles you can promise.
For jars rather than moulds, I Ordered 100 × 200 ml Candle Jars — How Do I Calculate How Much Wax They Actually Need When 200 ml Does Not Mean 200 g of Candle Wax? explains why a printed 200 ml is not 200 g of wax. The conversion logic is the same, but there is no top-up or trim.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not publish fill weights for our moulds, and we do not publish a wax density as a specification. The factor on this page is a labelled working range, and the page tells you to replace it with your own weighed candle before you order.
Wax, mould, sealer, wick and oil prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes are marked, never offered. The test-pour figures (first pour, top-up, trimmings, finished weight) are illustrative, not measurements of any CSI mould. Every per-candle and total figure is arithmetic on them, shown to two decimals.
The 0.86–0.90 g per ml factor, the 2 test candles, the 5% loss and the 6% and 8% loads are labelled working assumptions. No fragrance ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax is published in our data, and neither are wick sizes per pillar. For help with your own figures, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
