Should I Manufacture My Most Volatile Citrus Fragrances Closer to Diwali Than My Woody Fragrances or Rely on Tested Shelf-Life Data?
Aktie
Is sequencing enough on its own? No. A family tendency is not a measurement of your candle. One woody blend may lose its opening quickly; one citrus blend may hold well in your wax and jar.
What counts as tested shelf-life data? Your own real-time results: dated candles of that exact formula, held where your stock sits, compared blind with a fresh reference at set checkpoints.
Does CSI publish how long each oil lasts? No. CSI oil pages publish no shelf life or storage conditions. Ask on WhatsApp for written guidance for the oil and lot you are buying.
Sequencing is a hedge, not a fact
There is a sound reason behind the instinct to pour citrus late. Fragrance oils are blends, and the lighter, more volatile materials — common in lemon, orange, bergamot and other fresh openings — tend to evaporate and oxidise more readily than heavy woods, resins, musks and vanillic notes. CSI’s Citrus Lemon page puts it in its own words: citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, so cure the full 48–72 hours and work at the upper end of the range.
But notice what that sentence is. It is a tendency across a family, not a measurement of your lemon candle in your wax, jar and warehouse. Woody Oud, for example, opens with citrus and spice before its oud, patchouli and woods; its opening can recede too. Bergamot Amber opens bright and settles into amber and musk. A neat “woody early, citrus late” split hides blends that cross the line. Lemongrass and Lime carries cedarwood and soft musk beneath its citrus; Zesty Lemon has a soft floral heart and a clean musk base. Each will age in its own way, and only a pilot of each says how.
So the honest answer to your question is not either-or. Sequence when you lack data, and collect the data that lets you stop guessing.
What the two families cost you to make
A worked example makes the stakes concrete. Say your Diwali plan (your figures) is 450 lemon candles and 450 oud candles, each 200 g at 8% of total candle weight, so 16 g of oil per candle.
| Line | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Oil per scent | 450 × 16 g | 7,200 g = 7.2 kg |
| Citrus Lemon: seven 1 kg packs plus one 500 g | 7 × ₹2,832.00 + ₹1,420.00 | ₹21,244.00 |
| Woody Oud: seven 1 kg packs plus one 500 g | 7 × ₹4,531.20 + ₹2,265.60 | ₹33,984.00 |
| Citrus Lemon oil per candle | 16 × ₹2.832 | ₹45.31 |
| Woody Oud oil per candle | 16 × ₹4.5312 | ₹72.50 |
That buys 7.5 kg of each oil, leaving 300 g spare for pilots and retained samples. The figures exclude wax, jars, wicks, packaging, labour, shipping and GST. Note that the cheaper oil is the one at higher risk of fading in a long hold; if a third of the lemon candles end up too flat to sell proudly, the cheap oil was not cheap.
A sequenced production calendar
If Diwali dispatch is fixed and your melter can only do so many pours a day, order the work by risk. The table below is an example for a maker with a six-week production window; replace each week with your own.
| Week | What to pour | Why it sits here | Check before moving on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Woody Oud, Dark Vanilla | Heavier base notes; vanillin may warm wax colour over time | Retained candles labelled, colour noted |
| 2 | Woody Oud, Dark Vanilla (balance) | Finish the long-hold group early | Pilot day-30 sniff if one exists |
| 3 | Lavender, Bergamot Amber | Fresh openings over softer bases — middle risk | Lids on, cartons dated |
| 4 | Bergamot Amber (balance) | Keeps week 5–6 clear | Melter and thermometer check |
| 5 | Citrus Lemon | Most volatile opening, shortest wait | Full 48–72 h cure before packing |
| 6 | Citrus Lemon (balance), spares | Last in, first dispatched | Fresh reference poured for comparison |
Turning the hedge into tested windows
Sequencing tells you the order. Testing tells you how much room each scent actually needs. Here is a pilot design that produces scheduling data you can use this year and next.
You may find surprises. A lemon that passes 60 days in a lidded jar can be poured in week 2. A woody blend whose bright opening collapses by day 40 needs to move later, or needs a different oil. The family label got you started; the window finishes the job.
Keep the pilot records from year to year. Two seasons of windows for the same formula, from different oil lots, are far stronger evidence than one, and they let you plan the next Diwali calendar weeks earlier.
Handling a late citrus push without hurting quality
Late pouring only protects the citrus scent if the late pours are done as carefully as the early ones. Rushed final weeks produce their own faults: short cures, hot pours, skipped weighing. Any of those can make a citrus candle smell weaker on day one, and then you will blame ageing for a production problem.
If the melter cannot handle the late peak, it is better to move one woody batch earlier than to squeeze citrus into fewer, hotter, faster pours. The calendar exists to serve quality, not the other way round.
How to choose between the two approaches
Whatever you choose, do not order more citrus oil than the batches you will pour soon. CSI lists no oil pack above 1 kg; buy the 1 kg packs you need for each pour, or ask for a quote on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926), and request the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any storage guidance for that lot in writing. Oil that waits on a shelf for a late pour is itself on a clock.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%). CSI fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data; the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages refers to the wax. Accelerated heat or cycling tests compare options and do not predict an exact shelf life. Every test day, temperature, candle count, reject rate, lead time and cost of money is a suggested starting point or the reader's own figure. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed; larger quantities are shown at the 1 kg price and quoted on WhatsApp. Fragrance-oil prices re-checked 8 October 2026, wax prices 7 October 2026; product pages are authoritative.
