10 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as 2 × 5 kg — ₹9.00 less than the 10 kg bag · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
5 kg or 10 kg trial? 10 kg for most workshops — two batches on two days with two oils. 5 kg only if one 5 kg batch already is your production day and repeatability can wait.

How many candles does a 5 kg batch make? About 25 candles of 200 g at 8% with a 5% allowance.

What does the trial really cost? The candles burned or held back: about ₹4,804.49 of materials for 10 kg, ₹2,402.24 for 5 kg. The rest are saleable if it passes.

Should I buy the 10 kg Chunks bag? No — 2 × 5 kg is ₹5,990.00, the 10 kg bag ₹5,999.00.
The short answer
Answer: Run at least one full production batch; ideally two on different days. For a 5 kg batch, that is a 10 kg trial.
What it proves: Batch-scale process (heat-up, stirring, first-vs-last jar), day-to-day repeatability, and a second oil at scale.
Allocation: Per 25-candle batch: first, middle, last and one full-life candle burned beside controls; one shelf candle; 20 saleable.
Where the trial candles go: 5 kg versus 10 kg 200 g candles at 8% (184 g wax) + 5% allowance → 25 candles per 5 kg batch · each burned candle has a control beside it 5 kg trial — one batch Batch A · 25 candles · Cherry Blossom · day 1 10 kg trial — two batches, two days Batch A · 25 candles · Cherry Blossom · day 1 Batch B · 25 candles · Peach Melon Berry · day 2 burned: first, middle, last + full-life shelf candle (kept back) saleable if the trial passes 5 kg: 4 burned, 1 shelf, 20 saleable 10 kg: 8 burned, 2 shelf, 40 saleable The 10 kg trial adds what the 5 kg cannot: a second day (repeatability) and a second oil at production scale. The 5 kg trial is enough only if one 5 kg batch is already your normal production batch.
Each square is one 200 g candle. A 5 kg trial is one batch of 25: four burned beside controls (first, middle, last and a full-life candle), one kept on the shelf, the rest saleable. A 10 kg trial repeats that on a second day with a second oil — the only way to see whether your process is repeatable before a 100 kg order.
Straight answer
Should I run a 5 kg or 10 kg production trial before committing to a 100 kg soy wax purchase?
Usually 10 kg — poured as two production batches on two different days. A production trial has to prove your process, not the wax on the bench, so it must be at least one full batch at your real size, in your real equipment. One batch can be a good afternoon; two that match are a process. If your normal batch is about 5 kg, a 5 kg trial is one batch and cannot show repeatability; 10 kg gives you two, and a second oil at scale. If your batch is already 10 kg, a 5 kg trial does not test your process at all. At 200 g candles and 8% load each 5 kg batch makes about 25 candles: burn the first, middle and last plus one full-life candle beside controls, keep one on the shelf, and the other 20 are saleable if it passes. The trial's real cost is about ₹4,804.49 of materials for 10 kg. In Luxury Soy Wax Chunks buy the 10 kg as 2 × 5 kg (₹5,990.00, ₹9.00 less than the 10 kg bag); in CSI 468 the 10 kg bag is ₹6,370.00 at the production rate of ₹637.00 a kilo.
One line: trial at the size you pour, repeat it on a different day, then buy the hundred.
For most workshops the answer is 10 kg, poured as two batches on two different days. In Luxury Soy Wax Chunks buy it as 2 × 5 kg (₹5,990.00), not the 10 kg bag (₹5,999.00, ₹9.00 more). In Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 the 10 kg bag is ₹6,370.00 at the same ₹637.00 a kilo as 5 kg. Either way, about 40 of the trial candles are saleable if the trial passes.

The short answer: size the trial to your batch, then double it

A production trial is not a bigger bench test. It is your normal day, done once and watched closely.

By the time you ask this question you have already shown the wax works on the bench — the step after a successful kilo sets that out. What a production trial must prove is different: that your process, at your real batch size, makes the same candle every time. That gives a simple sizing rule. The trial must be at least one full production batch, because a smaller melt does not test heat-up, stirring or the temperature of the last jars poured. And it should ideally be two batches on two different days, because one good batch can be luck; two that match are a process.

So the choice between 5 kg and 10 kg depends on how much you melt at once. If your normal batch is about 5 kg or less, a 5 kg trial is one batch and a 10 kg trial is two — choose 10 kg. If your normal batch is already 10 kg (for example in a 10 kg electric melter), a 5 kg trial cannot test your process at all — choose 10 kg as your minimum, and consider 20 kg for a second day. Only if you pour very small batches and have little time would a single 5 kg trial be a reasonable floor. At 200 g candles and 8% load, one 5 kg batch makes about 25 candles with a 5% allowance.

Price is not the deciding factor here, and that is worth saying plainly. On CSI's list the trial wax costs the same per kilo as the 100 kg order you are preparing for: Chunks ₹599.00 a kilo in 5 kg bags, CSI 468 ₹637.00 a kilo at 5 kg and 10 kg. And most trial candles are not a cost at all — if the trial passes, they go on sale. The real cost is the handful of candles you burn and the few days you wait.

The CSI principle
One batch shows what your process can do. Two batches on two days show what it will do.
Size the trial to at least your real production batch, then repeat it — that is the evidence a 100 kg order deserves.

5 kg and 10 kg trials, side by side

The table compares the two trial sizes for a maker preparing a 100 kg order, using 200 g candles at 8% and a 5% allowance. Burned candles are the first, middle and last poured plus one full-life candle per batch, each beside a control from your retained, qualified wax. One candle per batch is kept back for the shelf. Everything else is saleable once the trial passes.

CSI 468 wax 1 × 5 kg ₹3,185.00 1 × 10 kg ₹6,370.00

The extra five kilos buy the two things a 100 kg order most needs. The first is repeatability: if batch B on day two matches batch A on day one, your process is stable across the things that change day to day — room temperature, the time you start, who pours. The second is breadth: a second oil at production scale. This example pours Japanese Cherry Blossom on day one and Peach Melon Berry on day two. If your range leans on a heavier oil — a vanilla or a gourmand — use that as the second, because it is the one most likely to behave differently. When a wax works with one oil but not another explains why.

Running the trial in a smaller pot than production. A maker who melts 10 kg at a time in production runs a 5 kg trial in a 1-litre melter because it is easier. Every process question the trial was meant to answer — heat-up, stirring, last-jar temperature — is now untested. Fix: run the trial in your production equipment at your production batch size. If your batch is 10 kg, the 5 kg trial is not a smaller version of the right test; it is a different test.

Matching the trial to how you actually melt

The right trial size is written on your melter, not on the wax bag.

Most small workshops melt in one of three ways: a pot or jug on a double boiler, a small electric melter, or a larger electric melter. CSI lists a 1-litre Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) and an Electric Wax Melter in 10 kg (₹21,240.00) and 20 kg (₹25,960.00) capacities; melter throughput per hour is not published, so time your own. Whatever you use, your trial batch should be the size you will pour on a normal production day.

Batch size is yours · CSI melter prices from the 3001–3100 catalogue pull · throughput not published
Trial size by production batch
Your normal batch Typical equipment Trial Why
Up to about 2–3 kg Pot / jug or 1-litre melter, several melts a day 5 kg as two half-days, or 10 kg as two days Several small melts already test repeatability; 10 kg adds a second oil
About 5 kg Several jugs or a mid-size melter 10 kg = two 5 kg batches on two days One batch per day; two days show repeatability
About 10 kg 10 kg electric melter 10 kg minimum; 20 kg for a second day A 5 kg trial would not fill your melter
About 20 kg 20 kg electric melter 20 kg, ideally twice The trial must match the batch

If the last line applies to you, the trial is a bigger share of the 100 kg order — 20 kg is a fifth of it — and that is fine, because the trial candles are saleable. Process tolerance as a wax criterion and precise versus forgiving pour temperatures cover what to watch in the batch itself, and testing at your real workshop temperature covers the room.

The trial protocol, day by day

1
Before day one: set the control and write tolerancesKeep retained, qualified wax for 8 control candles (1,472 g). Write your quality tolerances on the sheet now — for example a maximum difference in time to full melt pool — and note that safety lines have none.
2
Day one: batch A, oil oneMelt 5 kg in your production equipment. Add 16 g per candle of Japanese Cherry Blossom at your recipe temperature (follow the product page — CSI 468's page states pour 58–60°C; the Chunks page states fragrance addition at 80–90°C). Pour 25 jars, numbered in pour order; log wax temperature at the first and last pour.
3
Day two: batch B, oil twoRepeat with Peach Melon Berry. Same equipment, same timings, ideally the same person — or deliberately a different one, if more than one person pours in production.
4
Pour controls alongsideOn each day pour 4 control candles in your retained wax with the same oil lot, wick and jar.
5
Cure everything togetherSame room, same checkpoint (48 hours, 7 days or 14 days are labelled examples).
6
Burn pulls beside controlsJars 1, 13 and 25 from each batch beside a control, 3–4 hour cycles; jar 7 goes to the end of its life. Keep jar 19 on the shelf.
7
Compare A with BBatch A against its controls, batch B against its controls, and A against B. A difference that appears only on day two is a repeatability finding.

What each trial costs — and what it gives back

Here are both trials priced in full with CSI packs: wax, the oils for trial and control candles from the same lot, wicks and jars. Control wax comes from your retained stock. The more useful number is the last one in each column: the material value of the candles that are burned or held back, which is the trial's real cost if it passes.

At ₹266.92 of materials per candle (Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, Cherry Blossom at its 500 g rate, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar — before labour, packaging, freight and GST), the 10 kg trial's true cost is about ₹4,804.49, against ₹2,402.24 for 5 kg. The difference — ₹2,402.24 — is what repeatability and a second oil cost you. Set against a 100 kg order of Chunks (₹59,900.00) or CSI 468 (₹63,700.00), that is the cheapest insurance in the whole purchase.

Oils come in 500 g for a trial this size
Each trial batch needs about 487.2 g of oil for its candles and controls. For Japanese Cherry Blossom a 500 g bottle (₹2,500.00) costs less than building the same quantity from 100 g bottles, and its per-gram price equals the 100 g rate. If the trial passes, the leftover goes into production.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the 10 kg Chunks bag, and for this trial we are telling you not to buy it: two 5 kg bags cost ₹9.00 less for the same 10 kg. We would also rather sell you 100 kg today than 10 kg now and 90 kg in three weeks. We publish no burn or lot data that makes a trial unnecessary, so the 10 kg trial is what we recommend.

The waxes priced for a trial and the order after it

Both are candidates you might be scaling up, not ranked choices. CSI publishes no data that makes one perform better than the other; your trial decides it for your candle.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Here we advise against our own 10 kg Chunks bag (two 5 kg bags are cheaper) and against ordering 100 kg before a trial, because we publish no burn or lot data that could replace one.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing re-checked on 1 October 2026; oil prices were pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026; melter prices are from CSI's catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026. Candle counts, trial totals and per-candle costs are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

The 200 g candle at 8%, the 5% allowance, the allocation of pulled, full-life and shelf candles, 3–4 hour burn cycles and cure checkpoints are labelled working practices. Melter throughput is not published. For trial planning, quotes above 10 kg, GST invoicing or MSDS, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a candle production trial be?
At least one full batch at your normal production size, in your production equipment — ideally two batches on different days so you can see repeatability.
How many candles does 5 kg of soy wax make?
About 27.17 candles of 200 g at 8% fragrance load, or 25 with a 5% allowance for pour loss.
Can I sell candles from a production trial?
Yes, once the trial has passed — that is why a larger trial costs less than it looks. Keep back the candles you burn and a shelf candle per batch.
Which candles should I burn from a trial batch?
The first, middle and last poured, plus one taken to the end of its life, each beside a control. Pour-order differences show up in the last jars.
Is a 10 kg bag of CSI soy wax cheaper than two 5 kg bags?
Not for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: 2 × 5 kg is ₹5,990.00, the 10 kg bag ₹5,999.00. CSI 464, CSI 468 and Natural Soy Pearl are the same per kilo at 5 kg and 10 kg.
Do I need a trial if my bench tests passed?
Yes, before a large order. Bench tests prove the wax; a production trial proves your process at scale. The 1 kg evidence post covers the bench step.
Trial at your batch size
