Quick answers — read this first
Which one is usually to blame? Ranked by how often it is worth suspecting and how little it costs to rule out: the cure, then the wick, then the wax, then the oil. The oil is last not because oils are always innocent, but because convicting the oil is the most expensive verdict you can reach — about ₹4,581 per 100 candles if it moves you to a dearer bottle.

How do I actually find out? Pour four pairs of jars in one session from one recipe. Pair one is the control. Each other pair changes exactly one thing: the wax, the wick, or the oil. Cure them together, burn them on the same day, score them blind.

Why not compare everything at once? Because three waxes × three wicks × three oils is 27 combinations, or 54 jars at two per combination — roughly ₹10,199 of materials and a month of burning. Four arms answer the same question with eight jars.

What if two arms both improve? Then you have two real levers and a ranking problem, and you rank them by permanent cost per candle: ₹0 for cure, ₹3.54 for a thicker wick, ₹4.19 for a richer wax, ₹45.81 for a dearer oil on a 120 g candle.
The short answer
One difference per jar, or no conclusion: a jar that differs from the control in two ways cannot tell you which of the two mattered. That is not pedantry — it is the whole reason most makers have been "fixing throw" for a year without a repeatable recipe.
Attribute in the order of what the verdict costs: the cure costs nothing to fix, the wick costs paise, the wax costs a few rupees, the oil costs tens of rupees per candle forever. Test in that order and you will often stop before you reach the invoice.
The wax arm is never perfectly clean: change the wax and you change the pool, which changes what the wick is doing. Re-test the wick inside the new wax before you accept a wax verdict.

The same evidence costs very different amounts depending on which variable it convicts, so the standard of proof should rise with the bill. A cure verdict needs a sister jar. A wick verdict needs two jars and ₹3.54 a candle. An oil verdict asks you to add ₹45.81 to every candle you will ever pour — and that deserves eight jars, a blind panel and a repeat.
Straight answer
How do you find out whether the wax, the wick or the fragrance oil is causing weak hot throw?
By pouring one batch that contains four versions of the same candle, each differing from the control in exactly one respect. Arm C is your current recipe. Arm W swaps the wax — for instance Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599/kg for Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399/kg. Arm K swaps the wick, Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 for Thick (C2) at ₹9.44. Arm O swaps the oil, holding the load identical. Two jars per arm, eight jars, one pour, one jar diameter, one load, one cure, one burning session, scores taken blind on entry to the room. Materials come to ₹2,772.40 including the glass, and every arm you do not need afterwards leaves usable stock behind. What makes this worth doing rather than guessing is the cost asymmetry: on a 120 g candle at 8% the cure verdict costs ₹0, the wick verdict ₹3.54, the wax verdict about ₹4.19, and the oil verdict ₹45.81 — every candle, forever. Three of the four fixes are cheap enough to adopt on modest evidence. The fourth is not, which is exactly why it should be the last suspect you interview rather than the first. One line: four jars that differ in one thing each will name your cause in a fortnight; thirty jars that differ in several will not name it at all.

Why "I changed a few things and it got better" proves nothing

A candle that improved after you changed three variables has taught you one fact: that some combination of three things works. Good luck buying that again.

Weak hot throw has a short list of plausible causes and a long history of being fixed by accident. The accident is the problem. If you switch wax, step up a wick size and try a new oil in the same batch, and the candle is better, you now own a recipe you cannot economise on, cannot reproduce if one item goes out of stock, and cannot explain to anyone. You have bought an outcome without buying the knowledge.

The maths of comparing everything is worth seeing once, because it explains why nobody does it properly. Three waxes, three wicks and three oils is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 combinations. At the minimum two jars per combination — one jar is an anecdote — that is 54 jars. Using the control recipe below at ₹188.87 of materials per 120 g candle, that is ₹10,198.98 of wax, oil, glass and wick, plus 54 curing slots and something like 54 burn sessions of two to three hours. No small Indian candle business is going to do that, which is why the industry runs on folklore instead.

The alternative is not a smaller version of the same idea. It is a different idea: do not compare options, compare against a control. You are not trying to find the best wax, the best wick and the best oil. You are trying to find out which one is currently costing you throw. That question needs one arm per suspect, and it needs the arms to be otherwise identical — same jar diameter, same load to the gram, same add temperature, same stir time, same pour day, same cure length, same burning room, same scorer.

Before any of this, rule out the free suspect
Cure is not one of the four arms, because it is not a material — it is a delay, and it costs nothing to rule out. Burn a sister jar from the batch you already poured at day 14 or later and compare it with the impression that started this investigation. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests". Read the symptom before you pick a suspect

Before you pour anything, spend an evening observing the candle you already have. Different causes leave different fingerprints, and two of them are visible without a single new purchase. This is triage, not proof: it tells you which arm to run first, and occasionally it makes an arm unnecessary.

Two rows above end the investigation for free. A surface film means the candle is carrying more oil than the wax will hold in solution, and no wax, wick or oil swap fixes that — re-pour at the load your wax page states and start again. And a candle that everyone but you can smell is a nose problem: olfactory adaptation is real, fast and unbiased scoring is the only cure. Both cost ₹0 to establish, and both are commonly mistaken for a materials problem.

Score blind, on entry, by somebody who did not pour.The scorer leaves the room for ten minutes, walks back in, and rates 1–5 within five seconds of entering. Repeat at 30 and 120 minutes of burn. Then, and only then, unmask the labels. Keep the second jar of each arm unburned: it is your repeat, and a result that does not survive the repeat is not a result.
Why two jars per arm, not one
Pour-to-pour variation is real: a wick sits slightly off-centre, one jar cools nearer a window, one gets a millimetre more wax. With one jar per arm you cannot tell that noise from a finding. With two, a difference that shows up in both jars of an arm and in neither jar of the control is worth acting on. Eight jars is the smallest honest version of this test, and that is why the basket below has eight.

Two separate numbers, and makers routinely confuse them. The first is what the investigation costs once. The second is what living with its answer costs every month. The second is always larger, and it is the one that should set your standard of proof.

That table is the real argument of this page. The oil verdict is roughly thirteen times the wick verdict per candle, and it is the one makers reach for first, because a new bottle feels like progress in a way that waiting a fortnight does not. Work up the table, not down it. And notice the load row: raising load from 8% to 10% on a 120 g candle adds ₹15.04 of oil net of the wax it displaces — real money, but legitimate if you are currently below the range your wax page states. Every wax states its own number, and more oil is not automatically more throw.

The cleanest swap available to a small maker, because the two variants are the same product in two sizes: C1 at ₹5.90 each and C2 at ₹9.44 each, flat at every pack size from 10 to 1,000. The page states nothing about jar diameter — "Thin (C1)" and "Thick (C2)" are variant names, not sizing guidance — so which one suits your glass is exactly what this arm establishes. The control oil · a stated structure to argue with
Saffron Cedarwood
A useful control precisely because its page publishes a full pyramid: "Top: Citrus, Cardamom Middle: Palo Santo, Saffron, Violet Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber". That base is the part a burning candle relies on in hour two, so if this oil is quiet in a full pool the explanation is unlikely to be "nothing left to release". The page states no flash point and no IFRA wording — ask for the SDS figure on WhatsApp rather than assuming one — and describes it as "ideal for crafting wellness-focused candles, wax melts, bath bombs, soaps, scrubs, and lotions".

A warm woody direction at ₹4,885.20 per 1,000 gm, which is ₹4.885 per gram — cheaper per gram than the control, so this arm can win on both throw and cost. Its page is candid by omission: it states no note pyramid, no flash point, no IFRA wording and no usage percentage, saying only that it is "Ideal for creating soft and inviting candles, reed diffusers, soaps, lotions, and body care products". When a page states nothing, your burn test is the only evidence that will ever exist — which is a good reason to put such an oil in a controlled arm rather than straight into production.

The CSI principle
Attribution is not a matter of opinion about candles. It is a matter of how many things you changed at once.
Which is why the discipline is worth more than the shopping. A maker who can name the cause of a weak candle can fix the next one in a week. A maker who only knows which combination happened to work is hostage to a stock list.

Why the wax arm is never a perfectly clean swap

Change the wax and you have changed two things, whether you meant to or not.

A wick is not a fixed object; it is a fixed object in a specific wax. Move the same wick into a different wax and its behaviour changes, because the wax decides how much heat is needed and how the liquid feeds the flame. The stated figures make this concrete. Eco Soy CSI 400 states a "Melt Point 100°F (37.8°C)". Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a "Melting Point 80°C – 90°C" — its page gives the same band for melting and pouring, which is unusually high for a soy wax and worth confirming with the page before you rely on it. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C" and a pour of 58–60°C. Those are different working ranges, and a wick that opened the pool in one of them is not assured of opening it in another.

So a wax verdict needs a second round. If arm W improves the candle, do not conclude "this wax throws better" and reorder. Run C1 against C2 inside the new wax before you commit — two more jars, ₹3.54 a candle at stake — because the honest reading of a winning wax arm is often "this wax suits my current wick", which is a different and more useful sentence. The same caution applies in reverse: a wax that loses may simply have been mis-wicked.

There is a second confound worth naming. Waxes differ in what load they state they will hold: Chunks state "8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended"; CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"; CSI 468 states "Up to 13%"; Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl state nothing at all. If you run your wax arm at 8%, every wax in the comparison is inside its own stated range and the comparison is fair. If you run the arm at 12%, you are comparing one wax inside its range with another outside it, and any difference you see is contaminated. Hold the load at a figure every arm is allowed to carry.

Reading the four scores

You will end up with four numbers per scoring point and a lot of temptation. Read the pattern, not the highest single score. There are only five patterns that matter, and each one has a different next step.

Write the conclusion down in one line per arm, with the numbers attached: wax, oil, load, wick, jar diameter, add temperature, pour temperature, cure days, pool width at 2 hours, pool area, score at 30 and 120 minutes. That single line is what turns an evening of burning into an asset. Without it you will run this test again next year, because a result you cannot find is a result you do not have.

Frequently asked questions

Is weak hot throw usually the wax, the wick or the fragrance oil?
The honest answer is that it is usually none of the three: it is most often the cure, the load or the pool, all of which cost nothing or almost nothing to correct. Among the three materials, suspect in order of what a verdict costs — wick at +₹3.54 per 120 g candle, wax at about +₹4.19, oil at +₹45.81. Test in that order and you will frequently stop before the bottle.
How many test candles do I need to identify the cause?
Eight — four arms with two jars each: a control, a wax swap, a wick swap and an oil swap. One jar per arm cannot separate a finding from pour-to-pour noise, and a design with more than one difference per arm cannot attribute anything at all. Materials for the eight, including the glass, come to ₹2,772.40 at listed September 2026 prices, and the leftovers — wax, oil, wicks and stickers — go straight into your next batch.
Can I just change the wax and the wick at the same time to save time?
You can, and you will lose the ability to say why the candle changed. That matters commercially: if the wax goes out of stock, or the wick price moves, you will not know which half of the improvement you can drop. One difference per jar is the whole method. The only shortcut worth taking is the free one — burn a sister jar at day 14 before you pour anything, because a short cure imitates every fault on this page.
Does a cheaper fragrance oil mean weaker hot throw?
Price is not evidence. On the CSI range a gram of Mahogany Shea is ₹4.885 at 1,000 gm and a gram of Amber Oud Royal is ₹11.64 at 1 kg, and nothing on either page tells you how they behave in your wax at your load in your jar. What the pages do tell you is structure — Amber Oud Royal states "Base: Amber, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Musk" — and structure is a better clue than price. The test settles it.
My candle improved when I switched wax. Is the wax the answer?
Probably not on its own. A different wax has a different working range — Eco Soy CSI 400 states a melt point of "100°F (37.8°C)", CSI 468 states "50°C – 53°C" — so the wick you kept is doing a different job in the new wax. Before you reorder, run C1 against C2 inside the winning wax. Very often the accurate conclusion is "this wax suits my current wick", which also tells you the wick was the lever all along.
What should I write down during the test?
One line per jar, filled in at the bench: arm and jar code, wax, oil, load in grams, wick, jar stated diameter, actual add temperature, actual pour temperature, pour date, burn date, pool width in millimetres at 60, 120 and 180 minutes, pool area calculated with π × (width ÷ 2)², flame height, soot or mushrooming, and a blind score on entry at 30 and 120 minutes. The temperatures and the dates are the two columns makers skip and later wish they had.
