Wick change · Master checklist
All eight. Every line in the question happens only when the candle is lit, and the wick is what burns — so none of them survives a wick change untested. The kind of change decides the depth: CONFIRM for the identical wick from a new stockist, REPEAT for anything different, NEW lines for new wick types. Unlit results stay KEEP.
8 of 8
combustion lines retested after a wick-supplier change · REPEAT kit ₹2,566.52, CONFIRM kit ₹1,472.20 in CSI materials · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What should I retest when changing wick supplier? All eight combustion lines: flame height, melt pool, mushrooming, soot, hot throw, jar temperature, consumption rate and end of life — at REPEAT depth for any different wick.

What can I keep? Everything unlit: fragrance load, cold throw, surface, frosting, sweating and colour in storage. The wick does not affect them.

When is a short CONFIRM enough? When it is exactly the same wick product bought from a different stockist, or for the upper burns after a tab-only change. Any disagreement promotes it to REPEAT.

How many test candles? CONFIRM: 1 new, 1 control, 1 retained (₹1,472.20). REPEAT: 3 new, 3 control, 1 retained (₹2,566.52 with Eco Thin C1). See the counts.
The short answer
Answer: Retest all eight combustion lines; KEEP unlit results. Depth by change type: CONFIRM (same wick, new stockist; tab-only upper burns), REPEAT (different wick, size or type), NEW (wooden-wick and two-wick lines).
Rule: Safety lines are a gate against the control; then pool; then throw; then consumption and label; cost last.
Kits: REPEAT ₹2,566.52–₹3,097.52 depending on wick type; CONFIRM ₹1,472.20. The eight-fragrance post scales it to a range.
The eight lines × five kinds of wick change — the master verdicts KEEP = result stands · CONFIRM = short side-by-side · REPEAT = full retest · NEW = a test you never needed before Same wick, new stockist Same type, new supplier One size up / down Cotton → wooden Tab only Flame height CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT CONFIRM Melt pool CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT CONFIRM Mushrooming CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT NEW CONFIRM Soot CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT CONFIRM Hot throw CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT CONFIRM Jar temperature CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT Consumption rate CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT CONFIRM End of life CONFIRM REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT Unlit results — fragrance load, cold throw, frosting, sweating, colour in storage — are KEEP in every column. Cotton → wooden adds NEW lines (crackle, ember after extinguishing); two wicks instead of one adds NEW spacing and pool-merge lines.
The master grid for this cluster. Rows are the eight lines in the question; columns are five common kinds of wick change. Light cells need a short side-by-side against the control, dark cells a full retest, black a test that never applied before. Unlit results are KEEP throughout; wooden wicks and two-wick jars add lines of their own. Verdicts are a working framework, not a published standard.
Straight answer
When changing wick supplier, what should I retest: flame height, melt pool, mushrooming, soot, hot throw, jar temperature, consumption rate and end-of-life behaviour?
All eight — at a depth set by the kind of change. Every line in the question happens only when the candle is lit, and the wick is the part that burns, so none of them can be kept from your old approval. What you can keep is everything unlit: fragrance load, cold throw, surface, frosting, sweating and colour in storage. Then set the depth. CONFIRM — a short side-by-side against a control — is enough only when you are buying exactly the same wick product from a different stockist, or for the upper burns after a tab-only change. REPEAT — three new-wick candles against controls, burned to the end, every line logged — is needed for any different supplier's wick, any size change and any type change, however similar it looks. NEW lines appear when the wick type changes (a wooden wick's crackle and ember) or one wick becomes two. Judge every line against the control: CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit. A REPEAT kit is ₹2,566.52 in CSI materials; a CONFIRM kit ₹1,472.20.
One line: the wick changes nothing before the candle is lit and everything after — keep the unlit results, retest all eight combustion lines to the right depth.
One kit for any wick change. The standard REPEAT kit on this page — three new-wick candles, three controls and one retained, 200 g each in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Neroli — is ₹2,566.52 in CSI materials with Eco Thin C1 as the new wick, up to ₹3,097.52 with Performance Wooden Wicks. A two-candle CONFIRM kit is ₹1,472.20.

The short answer: all eight — but how hard depends on the change

Every line in the title is a combustion line. The wick is the part of the candle that burns. So none of them is a KEEP.

The title lists eight things: flame height, melt pool, mushrooming, soot, hot throw, jar temperature, consumption rate and end-of-life behaviour. All eight happen only when the candle is lit, and the wick is the component that turns wax and fragrance into flame, so a wick-supplier change puts every one of them in question. What varies is the depth of the retest. Buying exactly the same wick from a different stockist needs a short CONFIRM on each line. A different supplier's "same" wick, a size change or a type change needs a full REPEAT. A tab-only change needs a CONFIRM on the upper burns and a REPEAT at the end. And some changes bring lines you have never tested before — the NEW verdict.

What stays is everything that happens before the candle is lit. The fragrance load, how the oil binds, cold throw, surface finish, frosting, sweating and colour in storage are properties of the wax, the oil, the dye and the jar. The wick does not touch them, so they are KEEP for every wick change on this page. That is where this checklist saves you time: it tells you exactly which results survive, so the effort goes to the eight that do not.

Two changes are not in the grid because they add lines rather than change verdicts. Moving from cotton to wooden wicks puts every combustion line at REPEAT and adds NEW lines — the crackle, how the flame sits on a flat wick, any ember or afterglow after extinguishing, relighting — and mushrooming is replaced by the way carbon builds on a wooden wick; the cotton-to-wooden post covers them. Moving from one wick to two in a wide jar puts everything at REPEAT and adds NEW lines for wick spacing, when the two pools merge and heat between the flames; the one-to-two-wicks post covers those.

The CSI principle
The wick never changes what the candle is before it is lit. It changes everything after.
KEEP the unlit results. CONFIRM, REPEAT or add NEW tests for the eight combustion lines, by the kind of change you made.

The eight lines: how to measure each one

Each line is measured on the new-wick candle and on a control candle made with the approved wick, burned side by side in the same room at the same time. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit and no burn data for its wicks, so the pass condition is always relative: no worse than the control, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US candle fire-safety specification; read it yourself if your market uses it).

Working practice — not a standard · measure at fixed points in every burn
Measurement guide
Line How to measure When Pass vs control Common trap
Flame height mm against a ruler held behind the flame Fixed minute, every burn No taller Measuring right after a trim — measure at the same minute
Melt pool Diameter across widest point; depth with a clean skewer; minutes to full pool 1 h, 2 h, end Full pool within the burn; depth recorded Calling 'nearly to the edge' full — see the smaller-flame post
Mushrooming Photograph the wick head at the end of the burn Every burn No worse Judging only early burns; carbon builds up
Soot Rim of the jar; white card held above the flame Fixed minute No more Draughts make any wick soot — control the room
Hot throw Blind 1–5 score in a fixed room Fixed minute, after cure checkpoint Scored only after the safety lines pass Letting throw excuse a hotter burn — see the hotter-jar post
Jar temperature Same instrument, spot and minute; or cooler / same / warmer by hand Every burn — especially late No warmer Reading at a different height each time
Consumption rate (weight before − weight after) ÷ hours Every burn Recorded; drives burn time Forgetting the tare, so leftover cannot be known
End of life Extinction, leftover (final − tare), base check, tab holding Last burn No worse; leftover within tolerance Stopping the test early — see the tab-change post
Checking the lines that are easy, skipping the lines that decide. Flame height, pool and throw are visible on the first evening, so they get tested. Consumption and end of life need a scale and patience, so they get assumed. They are the two lines most likely to surprise you after a wick change — a faster burn shortens the candle; a different tab changes how it ends — and the tab-height post shows how many grams a single millimetre can cost.

How many candles each verdict needs

The verdict decides the size of the test. The counts below are labelled working practice for one fragrance in one jar — the series convention of at least three candles per variant for a full retest, a control made with the approved wick, and a retained unburned control for later production checks. Burn cycles of about 3–4 hours with full cool-down between are a commonly used cycle, also labelled.

Working practice for one SKU · add NEW-line candles only where a NEW verdict appears
Candle counts by verdict
Verdict New-wick candles Controls Retained Burned to Used for
CONFIRM 1 1 1 Full life; compared at burns 1–3 and the last burn Same wick from a new stockist; tab-only upper burns
REPEAT 3 3 1 Full life, every burn logged Any different wick, size or type
NEW — short-burn line +1 +1 — Full life on short sessions Checking tunnelling on customer-length burns
NEW — shallow-pour end of life +2 to +3 +2 to +3 — Extinction Tab and neck changes; fast end-of-life screen
NEW — type-specific lines Within the REPEAT candles — — As the line needs Wooden-wick crackle and ember; two-wick spacing

For a range of fragrances on the same wick, multiply sensibly rather than blindly: every fragrance needs its own comparison with a control, but full lives can be concentrated on a bracket of the highest-risk fragrances from your records — the eight-fragrance post prices that plan — and if the wick behaves differently by fragrance type, the lavender-and-vanilla post shows how to screen for it.

The master scoring sheet

One copy per candle per burn. Header: SKU, fragrance and load, wax bag and order date, jar and its measured internal diameter, wick (supplier, product, pack, order date, tab measurements), candle number, arm (new / control), tare weight, cure checkpoint, room, start time.

Write the tolerances before you start
Where you use a tolerance — "within 2 mm of the control flame", "leftover within 2 g" — write it at the top of the sheet before the first candle is lit, and never change it after seeing results. These are your working tolerances, not CSI figures and not safety limits.

The decision rule, in order

Safety lines are a gate. Performance lines are a score. Cost is last.
Apply after every candle has reached the end of its usable wax
Approve, escalate or reject
Order Check If it fails
1 Flame height, soot, mushrooming, jar temperature, end of life: no worse than control on any burn Reject — nothing below is scored
2 Melt pool: full pool within the burn on every burn; no growing wall ring Reject, or test the next size with its own full life
3 Hot throw: not clearly weaker than control (blind) Commercial decision — a weaker, safer candle may still be acceptable; a stronger, hotter one never is
4 Consumption: recorded; label burn time recalculated Relabel from measured figures
5 Cost and supply: saving (if any) survives; wick buyable in your quantities See the ₹2-per-candle post for payback

The rule does not average across lines or burns. A wick that is better on seven burns and warmer than the control on the ninth fails line 1. A wick that throws more because it burns hotter fails line 1 before throw is scored. And a CONFIRM that disagrees with its control at any checkpoint is promoted to a REPEAT at once — the short check has done its job by finding the difference.

The priced kits

Both kits use listed, in-stock CSI sizes on the pull dates, with a 5% pour-loss allowance (working assumption), 200 g candles at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (rated up to 13% by the wax maker) and White Matte Glass Jars (fill weight not published — weigh a test pour). Controls use your approved wick from stock. The new wick is priced four ways so you can see what the wick itself adds.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If you are changing to a CSI wick, the easiest thing for us to say is that a CONFIRM will do. It won't: a different product is a REPEAT on all eight lines, however similar it looks, and we publish no data that would let you skip it. The CONFIRM verdict is only for the identical product bought from somewhere new — and even then, it means a real side-by-side, not a glance.

Eight lines, every time the wick changes. The only question is how deep — and the checklist answers that before you pour.

If the wick change is one of several changes at once — a new wax as well, say — stop and separate them, testing one change at a time. And the wick-only post covers why storage testing is not normally repeated for a wick change while combustion testing is.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This checklist applies to our wicks exactly as to anyone else's: a change to any CSI wick is a REPEAT on all eight lines, and we publish no burn data, tab dimensions or equivalence claims that would let you skip it.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. Kit quantities use CSI's load convention (oil = candle weight × load) with a 5% allowance; totals are arithmetic.

The verdict grid, candle counts, 3–4 hour cycles, cure checkpoints and tolerances are labelled working practices for small businesses, not a published standard; ASTM F2417 is named as a commonly cited standard with no figures quoted. Frequently asked questions

What tests should I do when changing candle wicks?
Flame height, melt pool, mushrooming, soot, hot throw, jar temperature, consumption rate and end-of-life behaviour — each against a control candle on the approved wick, through the full life of the candle.
Do I need to retest fragrance load when I change wicks?
No. Fragrance load, cold throw and storage appearance are unlit properties the wick does not affect — KEEP them. Change the load only as a separate, one-variable test.
Is the same wick from a different seller safe to use without testing?
If it is genuinely the identical product, a CONFIRM — one new-wick candle beside a control, compared at the early burns and the last burn — is enough. A different product needs a full REPEAT.
How many candles do I need to test a new wick?
As a working practice, three on the new wick, three controls and one retained candle for a full retest; one, one and one for a confirm.
What is a safe flame height for a candle?
CSI publishes no numeric flame-height limit. Judge against your approved control, your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to, such as ASTM F2417.
Do I need to repeat storage tests after a wick change?
Normally not — storage behaviour belongs to the wax, oil, dye and jar. The wick-only post explains the exceptions.
