Quick answers — read this first
Why does my candle smell strong cold and weak lit? Three reasons, in order of likelihood: the melt pool is too small or too shallow, so only a sliver of your oil is ever in play; the blend's character sits in the top notes, which a cool jar flatters and a warm pool spends early; and you judged the burn with a nose that had been in the room for an hour.

Is the oil at fault? Rarely, and it is the dearest thing to blame. An oil that scents a closed jar is clearly in the wax; the question is whether the candle can deliver it.

What is the free fix? Re-light the same candle and log it at minute 15, hour 1 and hour 3, then measure the pool with a steel rule. If the pool has not reached the glass by hour three, you have a wick problem wearing a fragrance costume.

What is the paid fix? One wick size up at ₹5.90 to ₹9.44 a wick, or a heavier anchor in the blend — a base-led oil such as Santal Noir or Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) at ₹87.55 and ₹86.02 of oil per 120 g candle.
The short answer
The pool is the bottleneck, not the bottle: fragrance leaves a lit candle only from molten wax. In a 6 cm jar with a 5.5 cm wax column, a 5 mm pool is 9.09% of the wax — so roughly 0.87 g of a 9.6 g dose is available at any moment.
Read your own pyramid: the stated top notes are what sold the cold jar. The stated heart and base are what have to carry hours two and three. If the page describes a thin base, the gap you are seeing is designed in.
Log the burn before you change anything: minute 15, hour 1, hour 3, plus a pool measurement. Four data points cost nothing and they rule out the two dearest suspects.

Bar length is grams of fragrance oil sitting in molten wax at one moment, on the geometric assumption of a uniform cross-section: pool depth ÷ wax-column height × 9.6 g. The top bar is what you bought. The bars below are what the room is being offered. Deepening the pool from 3 mm to 12 mm multiplies the available dose four times without adding a rupee of oil.
Straight answer
Why can I smell my candle clearly when it is cold, but barely at all when it is burning?
Because the two sniffs are produced by two different physical arrangements, and your candle is good at one of them. Cold throw is slow accumulation: a solid surface at room temperature releases its most volatile materials into the small, still, lid-covered volume above it, with days or weeks to build a concentration. Hot throw is fast delivery into a large moving volume: only fragrance dissolved in molten wax can leave, and in a 6 cm jar with a 5.5 cm wax column a 5 mm pool is 9.09% of the column — about 0.87 g of a 9.6 g dose. That sliver has to scent a room against open doors and fans. Three things produce the gap, and only one is the oil. First, a pool that never reaches the glass: measure it, because a pool 40 mm across in a 60 mm jar has lost more than half its releasing surface. Second, a top-heavy blend — the stated top notes are what a cold jar shows off and what a warm pool spends first; Zesty Lemon states a base of "Clean Musk (very subtle)", which is honest and also tells you what carries hour two. Third, your nose, which stops reporting a smell it is sitting in. Fix in that order: the wick costs ₹5.90 to ₹9.44, the cure costs nothing, and changing the oil costs ₹32.64 to ₹87.55 a candle forever.
One line: a cold jar reports what is in the wax; a lit candle reports what the pool can get out of it — so widen and deepen the pool, check where your pyramid puts its weight, and only then suspect the bottle.
Everything in the diagnosis above is a wick-and-pool question first. Two machines, one jar

Nobody complains that a kettle is bad at refrigeration. Makers routinely complain that a candle designed for a shelf is bad at filling a room.

Describe what physically happens. Unlit: the top of the candle is solid wax at whatever your room is — high twenties for most of the Indian year. Molecules volatile enough at that temperature leave the surface, and with a lid on they have nowhere to go, so over days they build up in the trapped air. A customer lifting that lid receives the accumulated headspace in one breath: impressive, and not a measurement of what the candle delivers per hour.

Lit: a flame melts a shallow bowl of wax around the wick. Fragrance dissolved in that molten layer evaporates from its surface; fragrance still held in the solid wax below cannot. The releasing surface is the pool, the temperature is the pool's, and the destination is a room with thousands of litres of moving air rather than a few millilitres of headspace. A candle can be excellent at the first job and mediocre at the second without anything having gone wrong in the pour.

So "it smelled amazing in the jar" is not evidence in an argument about hot throw. The two tests differ in every variable that matters — surface, temperature, air volume, air movement and time — and the useful question is never "does this oil smell strong?" but "which of those five is letting me down?"

What this page is not saying
This guide describes a mechanism and gives you protocols to run. It reports no burn-test results, claims no figure for how much fragrance a candle releases per hour, and ranks no oil by measured throw — nobody has published that for the CSI range and we will not invent it. Every percentage here is geometry you can repeat; every quoted note, load and temperature comes from the product page it belongs to.

The thin layer, in grams and rupees

You bought 9.6 grams. At the moment of judgement, less than one of them is in the room's service.

Take a 120 g candle at an 8% load: 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil, distributed evenly if you added at the stated temperature and stirred properly. Pour it into a Purple Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid, whose page states 120 gm capacity, 6 cm diameter and 6.5 cm height. Allow headspace and the wax column is roughly 5.5 cm deep.

Now light it. The pool that forms is a few millimetres deep. Because the jar has a constant cross-section, the fraction of the candle's oil inside that pool is simply the fraction of the column's height that the pool occupies. A 5 mm pool is 0.5 ÷ 5.5 = 9.09% of the column, so it holds 9.09% × 9.6 g = 0.87 g of fragrance. Everything else — 8.73 g, or 91% of what you paid for — is still solid and not participating.

That is not a fault — it is why a candle burns for hours instead of gassing off in one. But it reframes the complaint. When a candle "does not smell", the interesting number is rarely the 9.6 g on the recipe card; it is the fraction of that 9.6 g the pool can present. The two levers on that fraction are pool width and pool depth, and both belong to the wick, the jar and the burn duration. Neither belongs to the bottle.

The mistake this arithmetic exposes. A maker with a quiet burn raises the load from 8% to 10%, taking the 120 g candle from 9.6 g to 12 g of oil. At a 5 mm pool that moves the fragrance in play from 0.87 g to 1.09 g — a fifth more, at full price, on every candle for the rest of the product's life. Deepening the same pool from 5 mm to 8 mm by fitting the correct wick moves it from 0.87 g to 1.40 g — 61% more, for the price difference between one wick and another. The load is the dose. Reading your own pyramid for the gap

Most of the answer is already printed on the page you bought from. It is just printed as poetry rather than as a warning.

A fragrance oil is a blend of materials with different volatilities. Perfumery calls that structure a pyramid — top, heart, base — and while the labels are commercial rather than scientific, they are a useful proxy for "leaves quickly", "leaves next" and "leaves slowly". 88 of the 107 CSI fragrance-oil pages state a full three-tier pyramid and 14 more state a single-note profile. That published structure predicts the shape of your problem better than any adjective on the same page.

The logic runs one way. A cool solid surface preferentially releases the lightest materials — the top — so a blend whose character lives there produces a cold jar that punches above its weight. A warm pool spends those same materials faster; what carries hours two and three is the heart and base. A page that calls its base very subtle is describing a design decision, and telling you where your candle will run out of things to say.

Read the quotes below as forecasts. They are verbatim from the product pages and the right-hand column is the expectation they set up — not a measured result, but the reasoning a maker should do before buying a kilo.

A pyramid is a direction of travel, not a dose
"Heavier base" never means "use more". Every one of these oils is capped by the wax you pour it into: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (page states 8–13% of total wax weight, 10% recommended), up to 10% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, up to 13% on Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. Where an oil page states its own narrower range, work to the lower of the two numbers. These are wax formulation limits, not regulatory limits.

One honest caveat about the pages themselves: five of the 107 oil pages state no note or profile block at all, and 14 more state a profile without splitting it into tiers. If your oil is one of those you cannot run the forecast above, which makes the burn log below your only evidence rather than an optional extra.

The four-reading burn log

"It doesn't smell" is a verdict delivered at an unknown time by an unknown nose. Replace it with four timestamps and a ruler.

This complaint persists because it almost always rests on one unstructured impression. Run the following instead, on a candle you have already made, before buying anything. Score smell on a blunt scale — 0 absent, 1 faint at arm's length, 2 obvious at arm's length, 3 obvious across the room, 4 obvious from the doorway — and write the number down as you smell it, not afterwards.

Control your own nose — it is the least reliable instrument in the room. Olfactory adaptation is real and fast: your reported intensity falls while the physical concentration is unchanged. Score from the doorway on arrival, leave the room for ten minutes between readings, and get a fresh nose to score blind, because a candle that "changes" during a burn is sometimes the candle and sometimes the nose.

A Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 makes the 9.6 g real, because load is a weight percentage and oils differ in density. Without both, "8%" is a guess.

The fix path, cheapest first

The wick is not a volume knob. Going up one size is the right first paid move; going up two is a different failure, because a flame too large for the diameter soots, mushrooms, overheats the pool and can make the scent read thin rather than full. Aim for a pool that reaches the glass and stays clean. The CSI principle
A cold jar measures how much fragrance is in the wax. A lit candle measures how much of it the pool can hand over per hour. Those are different questions, and only the second one is the product.
Which is why the first move on a quiet burn is a ruler, and the last move is a new bottle. One of them costs nothing and is right most of the time; the other costs money on every candle you ever pour again.
Testing an anchor before you commit? Most CSI oils list a 15 g trial, which is roughly one and a half 120 g candles at 8% — enough to pour a jar and score it against the blend you have. These three span the structure question rather than being ranked. Per-candle oil cost assumes a 120 g candle at 8% — 9.6 g of oil, 110.4 g of wax — at 1 kg rates. Quoted notes, loads and flash points are verbatim; where a page states nothing, this guide says so instead of filling the gap.

Write the gap down or argue about it forever

The last step is administrative, and it decides whether you solve this once or every quarter. Keep one sheet per scent per jar diameter: the wax and pack, the measured load as a share of the finished candle, the add temperature and stir time, the wick code, the jar's stated diameter, the pour date, the cold score, and the four burn scores with pool measurements beside them. Fourteen fields. It fits on a postcard.

The reason to bother is that this fault has three causes with three different fixes, and without a sheet you will apply them in combination. A maker who changes the wick, extends the cure and swaps the oil in the same month and finds the candle improved has learned nothing purchasable. One variable per batch, recorded at the bench, is the whole method.

Why does my candle smell amazing in the jar but not when lit?
Because the unlit jar has been accumulating vapour under a lid for days, while the lit candle must supply a room from a thin pool. In a 6 cm jar with a 5.5 cm wax column, a 5 mm pool holds about 0.87 g of a 9.6 g dose — 9.09% of what you paid for. Check the pool first: if it has not reached the glass by hour three, delivery is the problem. Then check where your oil page puts its base notes, because a top-led blend flatters a cold jar by design.
Does a strong cold throw mean the oil is good quality?
It means the oil contains volatile material that leaves a cool surface readily — one real property among several. It does not predict hour three, because a warm pool depletes those light materials quickly. A cold sniff is useful: it proves the oil is in the wax and dissolved. But it is a different measurement, so judge the two separately on the same candle and never let a lid test stand in for a burn. What "quality" can and cannot be judged from is a longer answer.
How long should I burn a candle before deciding the hot throw is weak?
Take four readings in one evening — minute 15, hour 1, hour 3, and the pool measurement at each of the last two — and score from the doorway rather than from the sofa. Judging at minute 5 measures the top notes only; judging at hour 4 with a saturated nose measures nothing.
