Quick answers — read this first
What is glass adhesion? How completely the set wax stays in contact with the inside of the jar, across the whole wall, at every temperature the candle will see. It is not a single pass/fail — it is a property that degrades in three distinct ways.

What are the three symptoms? Wet spots (patches of lost contact mid-wall), a gap at the top edge (a wedge of air where the wax meets the rim), and slump (the whole wax mass sliding or sagging when the room gets warm). Different causes, different fixes.

What is the single biggest cause? Using the wrong grade of wax. Pillar wax is formulated to release from a mould. Put it in a jar and it will do exactly what it was designed to do: let go.

What is the highest-return free fix? Warming the jar to roughly the pour temperature before you pour, so the wax nearest the glass sets last instead of first.
The short answer
Check the grade first. A container grade like Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹260 / 500g) or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹299 / 500g) is formulated to adhere. Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to release. No pouring technique overrides that.
Then the free steps: wipe the inside wall clean and dry, warm the jar to roughly pour temperature, pour into the warm jar, and let it cool slowly at a steady room temperature with nothing blowing on it.
Then judge it correctly: a candle can look perfectly bonded cold and open a gap at 30°C. That is thermal expansion, not a manufacturing fault, and it usually closes again.

The same property failing three different ways. Wet spots are patchy and set at the moment of pouring; a top-edge gap is continuous and set during cooling; slump appears only when the room warms up and points at the wax grade itself. Diagnosing which one you have is the whole job — the three do not share a fix.

Why does my candle have poor glass adhesion?
Because something stopped the wax from staying pressed against the glass as it set, or because the wax was never formulated to stay there at all. Check the grade first. A container grade like Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is blended to hold onto a vessel wall; Soy Pillar Wax is blended to shrink away from a mould so the candle drops out, and it will do that in a jar too. After grade, the order is: vessel temperature at pour (a cold jar chills the outer skin instantly and locks in wet spots), pour temperature, cooling rate, how clean the inside wall is, and vessel shape. Then judge the result honestly: adhesion has three separate symptoms — patchy pull-away mid-wall, a continuous gap at the top edge, and slump when the room warms — and only the first two are usually pour faults. Warming the jar and using a container grade removes most of the problem and costs nothing extra.
One line: poor adhesion is usually a pillar-grade wax in a jar, or a container-grade wax poured into a cold, dusty one — grade first, warm clean glass second, everything else after that.

What adhesion actually is, and the three ways it fails

Most makers do not have an adhesion problem. They have one of three different problems that all look like an adhesion problem from the outside.

Glass adhesion is how well the set wax stays in contact with the inside of the vessel — across the whole wall, through temperature changes, and through the burn. Three separate tests are hiding in that sentence. The whole wall is a spatial test: is any part of it showing air behind? Through temperature changes is a thermal test: does it hold at 22°C in January and 34°C in May? Through the burn is a dynamic test: does it hold when a melt pool has softened the top two centimetres?

A candle can pass one and fail the others, which is why "poor adhesion" is a useless diagnosis on its own, and why advice in maker groups contradicts itself — two people describing different faults with the same phrase. Name which of the three you have before you change anything.

Symptom one — wet spots. Irregular pale patches on the wall, usually mid-height, with clear wax around them, visible within hours of the pour. The wax there never made intimate contact with the glass, so you are looking at a thin film of air refracting light differently from the bonded areas around it. Symptom two — a gap at the top edge. A continuous wedge of air where the wax meets the rim, running all the way round the jar, deepest at the glass and tapering to nothing a few millimetres inward. Not patchy, not random: it is shrinkage. The wax contracted as it solidified, the top surface was the last part free to move, and it pulled inward and away from the wall. Symptom three — slump or slide when warm. The candle looked bonded at 24°C. At 33°C, or after two days in a courier van, the whole mass has sagged or slid down one side, leaving a crescent of empty glass at the top of that wall. Nothing is patchy: the wax lost enough rigidity to stop supporting itself, and its grip on the glass was not enough to hold it. This one is almost always a wax grade problem, and it is the only one of the three that no pouring technique will fix.

Two of these are set in the first hour after the pour. The third is set at the moment you decide which sack of wax to open. That ordering matters, because it tells you where to spend your attention: a maker fighting slump by adjusting pour temperature is solving the wrong problem with the wrong tool, and will keep failing for as long as the wrong wax is in the jar.

A quick triage question
Take a failing candle out of the display and put it somewhere at a steady 30°C for four hours. If the fault is worse afterwards, it is symptom three and you have a grade problem. If it is unchanged, it is symptom one or two and you have a process problem. That single test takes an afternoon and points you at the right half of this page.

Everything that determines whether wax grips glass falls into six variables. They are not equal. The first accounts for more failures than the other five combined, and the last two are the ones makers most often blame first.

One mechanism sits behind that ranking. Adhesion is decided in the last few seconds of the liquid state at the wax–glass boundary. A hot jar keeps that boundary liquid a little longer, letting the wax flow into the microscopic texture of the glass before it locks up. A cold jar freezes a skin against the wall immediately, and that skin then shrinks as the rest of the candle cools, peeling itself off a surface it never properly wetted. That explains driver two, most of driver three and much of driver five.

Driver one outranks all of it because it changes what the wax is trying to do. Container blends are built so the set wax stays soft and tacky enough to keep contact with a wall. Pillar blends are built the opposite way: harder and more contractile, so the candle pulls in from the mould and slides out. Both are correctly formulated. Only one is trying to stick.

Vessel shape sits at six because it concentrates adhesion failure rather than causing it. A shoulder, an internal step, a heavy moulded base or a visible seam gives the wax somewhere to bridge across instead of press into, so a wax that behaves in a straight-sided jar shows a repeatable mark at the shoulder of a curved one. If the fault lands in the identical position on every unit, stop adjusting temperatures and look at the vessel. Grade is the first thing to check, and usually the last thing you need to change

If you take one thing from this page: open the sack and read what it was made for. The wax names on the CSI store are not marketing decoration, they are the specification. Two of the three below are container grades. The third is not, and putting it in a jar is the most common cause of the slump symptom in the diagram above.

The other container grade, and the one to pick for fragrance headroom: stated ceiling up to 13%, the highest published figure in the CSI soy range, again a formulation limit rather than a regulatory one. Adhesion behaviour is comparable to CSI 464 — both are made for vessels — so choose on load and form, not on stickiness. Soy Pillar Wax (for Pillar & Designer Candles)
A good wax doing a different job. It is formulated for pillars, moulds and designer shapes that must release cleanly, so it is built to contract away from the surface it was cast against. In a glass jar it contracts away from the glass in exactly the same way — it will never adhere well, because it is designed not to. No pour temperature, warmed vessel or cooling schedule changes that; you would be asking the wax to fail at the one thing it was engineered to do. The other two container options, for completeness. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650.00/kg is a softer, premium-tier container flake, and softer generally means more forgiving against a wall. Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.00/kg is the cheapest soy in the range and a sensible one-pour wax for small batches and testing. Both are container waxes. Neither is a pillar wax. If you are only ever going to remember one rule, remember that the word "pillar" in a product name is a specification, not a style.
The CSI principle
A pillar wax that pulls away from glass is not a defective wax. It is a wax doing precisely what you bought it to do, in the wrong container.
Release and adhesion are opposite specifications. Every hour spent tuning pour temperature to make a mould wax stick to a jar is an hour spent arguing with a formulation. Change the sack, not the schedule.

Clean glass and a warm jar — the two steps nobody mentions

Everyone talks about pour temperature. Almost nobody talks about what is already on the inside of the jar when the wax arrives.

Wax does not bond chemically to glass. It grips by settling into the microscopic texture of the surface while still liquid, then freezing in place. Anything sitting between the wax and that texture is a release layer. Packing dust, a smear of factory oil, a fingerprint from whoever unpacked the carton — each gives the wax something smooth and slightly greasy to sit on instead of glass.

This is the most under-discussed cause of adhesion faults, and it has a tell: randomly positioned, sharply-bounded marks that do not repeat between units. Cold-glass wet spots are diffuse and cluster. Contamination marks are discrete, sometimes arc-shaped, and appear on one jar in a tray while its neighbour is perfect. If your failures are scattered rather than systematic, wash before you re-engineer.

Warm the jars, and pour into them warmThe highest-return step on this page. Bring the vessels up to roughly your pour temperature so the wax touching the glass stays liquid a few seconds longer and settles into the surface before it locks. Method below.

On warming: the target is not precision, it is the absence of a cold shock. A jar merely warm to the hand beats a jar at room temperature in a December workshop, and a jar near pour temperature is better again. The practical methods:

Dry the rim, always
The water-bath method fails when a bead of water is left on the rim or the outside and runs into the jar as you pour. Whichever method you use, the inside of the jar must be dry at the moment the wax goes in. A 600 ml steel pouring pitcher at ₹708 helps here too, because a controlled pour down the inside wall disturbs the warm layer far less than a splash into the centre.

Cooling is the other half of the same idea: having kept the boundary liquid, do not then chill it. Pour onto wood or cardboard rather than a cold steel bench, leave a hand's width between jars so they share warmth, and keep the tray away from fans, AC vents, open windows and doorways. Never refrigerate to speed setting — rapid cooling maximises the shrinkage stress that produces the top-edge gap. Cover the tray loosely with a carton in a draughty room. The seasonal swing is real: the same recipe poured on a 34°C May afternoon and a 16°C January morning is not the same process, and January is the batch that shows the fault.

Pour temperature sits fourth because it does less for wall contact than makers assume, but it is not nothing. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Work to the figure stated for your wax, read it off a pen thermometer at ₹354 rather than judging by eye, and change it in small steps. Pouring hotter buys longer at the boundary but deepens shrinkage and worsens the top — a real trade-off, not a single best number. Adhesion during the burn — and why a warm gap is usually not a fault

This is the situation that generates the most unnecessary customer emails. A candle leaves your workshop with a flawless wall. The customer lights it, and an hour later there is a visible gap around the melt pool, or the wall looks cloudy and detached halfway down. Nothing has gone wrong.

Wax has a far higher coefficient of thermal expansion than glass. As the candle warms — from the flame, a hot room, a courier van in the sun — the wax expands considerably and the glass barely at all, and on the way down the wax contracts more. Each cycle works the boundary a little, so a candle perfectly bonded on day one can show separation after a few burns. It is normal, common to every container candle in every wax, and the appearance usually improves again as the candle cools.

Normal versus not normal, during the burn. Normal: a gap or cloudiness that appears when the candle is warm and largely closes or fades as it cools; separation that develops gradually over several burns; a ring of changed appearance around the melt pool level. Not normal: the wax mass sliding down one wall as a unit; a gap that appears cold, on the shelf, and gets worse each week without being lit; a candle whose whole plug loosens and can be rocked in the jar. The first list is physics. The second list is a grade or a process fault, and the pull-away guide covers the diagnosis.

Put that distinction in front of customers before they find it themselves. One line on a candle care sticker — ₹413 for 500, or ₹0.83 a unit — saying natural soy may pull slightly away from the glass as it warms and that this does not affect the burn turns a complaint into a mark of authenticity. Same logic as explaining frosting: an expected characteristic named in advance stops being a defect.

Which raises the fair question: how much does any of this actually matter? Honestly, less than the effort makers put into it — with one exception worth checking.

That last row is why you keep a standard rather than shrugging the whole thing off. It is also rare, and it belongs to the slump category — which means it belongs to the grade question at the top of this page. Fix the grade and the safety-adjacent case largely goes with the cosmetic ones. For everything else, set a written accept/reject line, apply it consistently at packing, and stop re-pouring units that would have sold perfectly well.

Testing adhesion properly — the two-jar method

Opinions about adhesion are worthless because everyone is comparing different candles poured on different days in different weather. The only useful evidence is two jars poured from the same pitcher, differing in exactly one variable. Here is that test for the highest-value variable on this page: the warmed vessel.

The same method answers the grade question in an afternoon: pour CSI 464 into one warmed jar and Soy Pillar Wax into an identical warmed jar, cool them side by side, warm both to 30°C at 48 hours. The difference is not subtle. At 200g a jar the experiment costs about ₹101 of CSI 464 and ₹120 of pillar wax, plus two jars.

One last argument, and it runs against our own interest. Nothing on this page needs you to spend money. The two changes that fix most adhesion complaints are using a container-grade wax — at ₹507.40 per kilogram, CSI 464 is cheaper than the pillar wax many makers are wrongly using — and warming a clean jar before you pour, which costs an oven that is already on. What is glass adhesion in a candle, exactly?
It is how well the set wax stays in contact with the inside of the vessel across the whole wall, through temperature changes and through the burn. It is a property with degrees, not a pass or a fail, and it degrades in three ways: patchy wet spots mid-wall, a continuous gap at the top edge, and slump or slide when the candle gets warm. Each has a different dominant cause, so the first job is deciding which of the three you have.
Can I use pillar wax in a glass jar?
You can pour it, but it will not adhere well and no technique will make it. Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to contract away from the surface it is cast against so pillars and moulded shapes release cleanly — that is the product working correctly, and glass is just another surface to let go of. For jars use a container grade: CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg or Luxury Soy Chunks at ₹599.00/kg — both cheaper per kilogram than the pillar wax at ₹600.00.
Does warming the jar really make a difference?
It is the highest-return free step available. A cold jar chills the wax touching it almost instantly, freezing a skin against the glass before it has settled into the surface texture; that skin then shrinks and lifts. A warm jar keeps the boundary liquid a few seconds longer, which is all it needs. Run the two-jar test above and you will have your own evidence in 48 hours rather than someone else's opinion.
My candle looked perfect, then a gap appeared when the weather got hot. Is it faulty?
Usually not. Wax expands and contracts far more than glass, so every warming cycle works the boundary a little, and a gap that appears warm and largely closes as the candle cools is normal for a container candle. What is not normal is the whole mass sagging or sliding down one wall, or a gap widening week after week on a cold shelf without the candle being lit. Is poor adhesion a safety problem?
Mostly no. Ordinary wet spots and a shallow cosmetic gap at the rim do not change burn time, throw, wick behaviour or melt-pool formation, and are not a hazard in a sound vessel. The one case worth checking is a large continuous gap — wide enough for liquid wax from the pool to run down behind the wax body, carrying heat below the level you designed for. Reject those units rather than ship them, and treat them as a signal to re-check the wax grade.
Do wet spots and poor adhesion mean water got into my wax?
No. The name is misleading — the pale patch is a very thin film of air between wax and glass, refracting light differently from the bonded wall around it. Genuine trapped water is a different and much worse fault, and it comes from jars washed and not dried completely.
