Soy does not tunnel because soy is bad wax. It tunnels because the pool is cooler and the memory ring is stronger — and the first burn sets both.

Candle Troubleshooting · Soy Wax
Soy is softer, melts lower and burns with a cooler pool than paraffin — and it holds a far stronger memory of its first burn. That combination is why the undersized wick paraffin quietly forgives will tunnel a soy candle for its entire life.
117 g
wax stranded in a 200 g candle by a 45 mm tunnel in a 70 mm jar — about ₹70.08 at ₹599/kg · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Why does soy tunnel more than paraffin? The pool runs cooler, so less stored heat pushes the melt front out to the glass, and soy's re-solidified ring is a real thermal barrier. Paraffin's hotter pool eventually chews through an undersized ring. Soy's does not.

Is it really the first burn? In most reported cases, yes. Soy sets its memory ring on burn one and repeats it forever after.

Am I using the wrong wax? Only if you put a pillar grade in a jar. Soy Pillar Wax is made to be hard and to shrink away from a mould; both tunnel in a container.

What do I change first? The wick, then the label — not the wax. A C1/C2 test spread is ₹247.80; a care sticker is ₹0.83.
The short answer
The mechanism: soy's pool is cooler, so the melt front stalls before it reaches the glass. Where it stops on burn one is where it stops forever. That is the memory ring.
The three soy-specific causes, by frequency: a short first burn; a wick sized as if the wax were paraffin; a pillar-grade soy poured into a container.
Three things that make it worse: fragrance at the stated ceiling (13% on Luxury Soy Chunks, 10% on CSI 464), a heavy dye load, and a cold winter room.
The memory ring in soy — four burns, one pool width BURN 1 BURN 2 BURN 3 BURN 4 short first burn same column re-melts ring wall thickens flame sunk in the well Pool width is identical in all four panels. The tunnel only ever goes down.
One soy jar on four consecutive burns. Black is solid wax, white the re-frozen column; the tick bar marks the pool width, unchanged from burn one. Each burn deepens the well and drops the flame below the rim of the unmelted ring, cutting the heat reaching the wall.
Straight answer
Why is my soy candle tunnelling when the same jar and wick worked in paraffin?
Because soy gives you less heat to work with and remembers what you did with it. Soy is a soft, low-melting wax that burns with a cooler melt pool than paraffin, and the melt front only advances while the pool holds more heat than it loses to the glass and the air. In soy that balance tips early, the front stalls short of the wall, and the ring left behind re-solidifies harder than the wax around it. On the next burn the flame re-melts the same column and stops in the same place. That is the memory ring, and soy holds it far more stubbornly. Three causes account for nearly everything customers report: a first burn ended before the pool reached the glass, a wick sized from a paraffin chart, and Soy Pillar Wax poured into a jar it was never made for. The general diagnosis for any wax is in why is my candle tunnelling, and the rescue procedure in how to fix candle tunnelling. This page is only about what soy does differently.
One line: soy's pool is cooler and its memory ring is stronger, so the first burn writes the pool width and every later burn copies it.
Before you replace a kilogram of wax, replace the wick. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) from ₹59 for 10 at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) from ₹188.80 for 20 at ₹9.44 each — the spread is ₹247.80 and settles it in three burns.

Why soy tunnels and paraffin forgives

Paraffin lets you get the wick wrong. Soy does not, and it will not let you get it wrong quietly.

Tunnelling is a heat-balance problem. A flame puts a fixed amount of energy into the top of the candle; some melts wax, the rest escapes through the glass and the air. The melt front advances only while the pool takes in more heat than it sheds, and when those rates match it stops. Whether it stops at the glass or 12 mm short is the whole question. Three properties of soy pull that point inwards.

One: soy melts lower and burns with a cooler pool. A cooler pool is a smaller reservoir of stored heat. Paraffin's hotter liquid works as a heat battery, radiating sideways into the solid wax long after the flame has passed; soy's holds less. Two: soy conducts heat poorly, so wax a few millimetres out is warmed mainly by radiation.

Three, and this decides it: soy re-solidifies differently from how it was poured. Wax melted by a flame and cooled in the jar does not return to the crystal structure it had when poured at a controlled temperature. The band just outside the pool — warmed but never fully liquid — sets harder and denser, and becomes a barrier the flame must attack from a standing start on every burn. That is the memory ring.

The forgiveness gap. An undersized wick in paraffin often still gives a full pool, just slowly, because the hotter pool keeps grinding outward. The same wick in the same jar in soy stalls at, say, 45 mm in a 70 mm jar and stops. There is no "eventually". A soy candle either reaches the wall on burn one or it never does. Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets at ₹354/kg are not better wax, only more tolerant of a wicking mistake.

So the fix is almost never a wax change. Dropping Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 for paraffin hides the symptom and leaves the untested wick where it is. Fix the heat balance; keep the wax — and if you are still choosing one, see how to verify wax quality before you buy.

The memory ring, burn by burn

Every maker has heard "the first burn sets the memory". Few are told what is actually happening, which is why the advice gets ignored.

1
Burn one — the only burn where the wax is uniformThe wax has been melted once at a controlled temperature and cooled once, slowly. Given a correct wick and enough time the pool reaches the glass. Blown out after 45 minutes at 45 mm in a 70 mm jar, it stops there, leaving a 12.5 mm wall of never-melted wax at full height.
2
Between burns — the barrier formsThe centre re-freezes into a shallow bowl below the top of the untouched ring, and the band outside it sets harder and denser than the poured wax. The candle now holds two waxes: a soft centre and a tough ring. That is the memory ring — a material boundary, not a habit.
3
Burn two — the geometry turns against youRadiation travels in straight lines, so the standing rim shields the outer wax from part of the flame's heat, and the well restricts airflow, lowering flame height. Less heat, aimed worse, at a harder ring. It re-melts the same column and stops in the same place.
4
Burns three, four and after — the loop tightensEvery burn drops the pool floor without moving the wall out, so wall height over flame height climbs each time. Eventually the wick drowns in its own well.

The arithmetic is worse than it looks, because pool area goes with the square of the radius. In a 70 mm jar a full pool is π × 3.5² = 38.48 cm²; a 45 mm pool is π × 2.25² = 15.90 cm², just 41% of the surface. The same holds for the wax: the unmelted ring is 1 − (45 ÷ 70)² = 58.7% of the fill, so a 200 g candle strands about 117 g — ₹70.08 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599/kg.

Why a short first burn is close to unrecoverable in soy
In paraffin you can often burn a tunnelled candle out of trouble. In soy the pool never gets hot enough to attack a ring that is harder than the wax around it. Recovery means intervening physically — a foil collar, or a hot air gun at ₹531: see how to fix candle tunnelling. Prevention is not the cheaper option here. It is the only one that scales.

Which is why a short first burn is the commonest cause of soy tunnelling customers report. Not carelessness — a new candle rarely gets its two to three hours. It is lit while dinner cooks and put out when the moment ends, and by the time the photograph reaches you the wax decided long ago.

The CSI principle
In soy, the first burn is not the first burn. It is the manufacturing instruction for every burn after it — and you are handing that instruction to a stranger.
Which makes the label part of the product, not the packaging.

Grade: container soy is not the same product as pillar soy

"Soy wax" is a category, not a specification. A container grade is formulated to stay soft, cling to glass and melt across a wide surface at a low temperature. A pillar grade is formulated to stand unsupported and to shrink away from the mould so the candle releases — the two properties you least want in a jar. Harder wax needs more heat to advance the front; shrink-away gives poor adhesion and a ring that separates from the wall instead of melting into it.

Soy Pillar Wax Pillar — moulds only. Not for jars. Standard ₹300 / 500g · ₹600 / 1kg · ₹3,000 / 5kg · ₹6,000 / 10kg
Without hedging: using Soy Pillar Wax in a container is a tunnelling recipe. It is excellent wax, and exactly right for pillars and moulded designs. In a jar it stalls the melt front early and pulls away from the glass. If you bought one bag of soy for everything, this is very likely your problem.

Price does not decide between the container grades — at 1 kg they run ₹399 for Eco Soy CSI 400 to ₹599 for Luxury Soy Chunks, about ₹37 a candle across 184 g of wax. Change wax for a different finish, ceiling or cost base, not to fix tunnelling — and re-test after any change, because a wick validated in Coconut Soy CSI 468 is not validated in the next wax you pour.

Wick sizing in soy specifically

The cooler the pool, the more wick it takes to open it. That is the whole soy wicking adjustment in one sentence.

The rule that fixes most soy tunnelling: soy usually needs a larger wick than the same jar would need in paraffin. Not always — usually. The cooler pool stores less heat, so you need more input to reach the same width in the same time; if you sized from a paraffin chart you are probably one size under. Treat that as a starting point to test, not an answer — grade, load, dye and the room all move it. A table can only tell you what a full pool has to cover, and what a stalled one costs.

Target full-pool area by jar diameter · πr²
What the wick has to melt, and what a stalled pool costs
Internal diameter Full pool (πr²) Pool stalling 12.5 mm short Surface lost
55 mm 23.76 cm² 30 mm = 7.07 cm² 70.2%
60 mm 28.27 cm² 35 mm = 9.62 cm² 66.0%
65 mm 33.18 cm² 40 mm = 12.57 cm² 62.1%
70 mm 38.48 cm² 45 mm = 15.90 cm² 58.7%
75 mm 44.18 cm² 50 mm = 19.63 cm² 55.6%
80 mm 50.27 cm² 55 mm = 23.76 cm² 52.7%
1
Pour three identical jars per candidate wickSame wax, load, dye, jar, pour temperature and cure. Change the wick and nothing else, then burn each straight through and time the pool.
2
Target the glass in two to three hours on burn oneUnder two hours, probably over-wicked; not there by three, that jar will tunnel in a customer's hands.
3
Check the flame, not just the clockReject any wick that soots, mushrooms heavily or flickers hard. Over-wicking overheats the pool and flashes off lighter notes.
4
Write the winner down against the jar and the wax"Eco C2, 70 mm jar, CSI 464, 10% load, no dye, full pool 2h 20m." That line, plus the ambient temperature, is the specification.

On cost: Eco Candle Wicks come in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), which makes the soy step-up easy to test. C1 is ₹59 for 10 (₹5.90 each); the C2 entry pack on this pull is ₹188.80 for 20 (₹9.44 each), the C2 ten-pack being out of stock. The full spread is ₹247.80 and the per-candle difference between sizes is ₹3.54 — against ₹70.08 of stranded wax in one tunnelled jar. Reference: best wick for candle making by diameter.

Fragrance, dye, the Indian room and the customer's first burn

Fragrance load at the top of the stated range. Oil is not wax; past a point it changes how the blend melts and how the wick draws fuel. The ceilings are wax-maker formulation limits, not regulatory limits: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. Maximums the wax will hold, not targets. Wick-test at 6% and ship at 13% and you have not tested the candle you sell.

Dye is the factor makers forget. Pigment does not burn; it accumulates in the wick, so a heavily dyed candle can draw less cleanly, with a shorter flame and a smaller pool. CSI liquid dyes start at ₹236 for the 15 ml/15 g size across every shade, with ₹472 at 50 and ₹900 at 100 on the main range. They are concentrated, and the usual failure is overdosing because the wax looked pale while hot. Dose light and judge it cold.

Indian ambient temperature. The melt front runs on heat kept versus heat lost to the glass, the air and the surface under the jar. A cold room raises the loss side, and soy has the least margin to give: a candle validated in May can tunnel in December on exactly the same wick. The wax has not changed; the room has. Cold glass at the pour also pulls heat out on contact, which is where wet spots come from. Warm the jars in winter, record ambient temperature with a pen thermometer at ₹354, and ship a larger wick on winter batches if one size cannot cover both.

And the customer's first burn — the factor you cannot control and must therefore instruct. Print the rule: burn until the pool reaches the edge of the jar on the first burn, about one hour per 25 mm of diameter, so two to three hours for a 70 mm jar. Candle Care Stickers Roll is ₹413 for 500 one-inch stickers, ₹0.83 each, or ₹699 per 1,000 at 1.5 inch — the highest-return ₹0.83 in the accessories range.

Nobody ever fixed a soy tunnel by buying a different soy. They fixed it with one wick size and one sentence on the label.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

Now the argument against our own interest. Tunnelling in soy is almost always a first-burn or a wick problem, and very rarely a reason to change wax. We list six soy waxes here, and it would be easy to say the one in your cupboard is wrong and the ₹599/kg one will fix it. That would usually be false. The one exception is Soy Pillar Wax in jars, which is a grade error. Everyone else should spend ₹247.80 on wicks and ₹413 on care stickers, run three burn tests and keep the wax they have — then cost the stranded wax in properly, as in how to price candles in India 2026.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The convenient advice here is "your wax is wrong, buy ours". We have written the opposite: this is nearly always a first-burn or wick problem, and a ₹0.83 care sticker fixes more of it than any wax upgrade.

Every price, pack size and ceiling comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing takes precedence. The 13% and 10% figures are the stated loads for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464 — formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Melt-pool areas are πr² from nominal internal diameters, not measurements of any listed jar.

Frequently asked questions

Why does soy tunnel more than paraffin?
Soy burns with a cooler melt pool, so less stored heat drives the melt front outwards and it stalls earlier. It also forms a stronger memory ring: the band just outside the pool sets harder and denser than the poured wax. Paraffin's hotter pool often grinds through an undersized ring; soy's does not. All-wax diagnosis: why is my candle tunnelling.
Can a tunnelled soy candle be saved?
Only by physical intervention, not by burning it longer: the pool cannot get hot enough to attack a ring harder than the wax around it. A foil collar or a hot air gun at ₹531 re-levels the surface, but neither is something to ask of a customer. Procedure: how to fix candle tunnelling.
Does soy need a bigger wick than paraffin?
Usually yes — the cooler pool needs more heat input to reach the same width in the same time. Treat it as a starting point to test, not a rule: grade, load, dye and the room all move it. Eco Candle Wicks ship in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each; the step-up test is ₹247.80. Target a full pool in two to three hours.
Can I use Soy Pillar Wax in a jar?
No — the one case where the wax genuinely is the problem. Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to stand unsupported and shrink away from a mould; in a jar that stalls the melt front and pulls wax off the glass. Use a container grade — CSI 464 from ₹260/500g, Luxury Soy Chunks from ₹299/500g, Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399/1kg or Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹450/1kg — and keep pillar wax for moulds.
Why do my soy candles tunnel in winter but not in summer?
Because the melt front depends on heat kept versus heat lost, and a cold room increases the losses. A candle validated in May can tunnel in December on the same wick. Soy has the least margin of the common container waxes, so it shows the difference first. Validate the wick in your hottest and coldest trading months.
