Start with a palette, not a shopping cart

A bulk colour order only saves money if the colours get used. So before the order comes the palette: the fixed set of shades your brand sells, each with a written recipe. Many candle ranges can be built from five core liquid colours — blue, green, purple, red and yellow — mixed and diluted into pastels and seasonal shades, plus a few extras where a range genuinely needs them. Fewer bottles also means fewer reference samples to keep, fewer recipe cards to maintain and fewer half-used bottles ageing on a shelf.

Two notes on the extras. Brown is available as Brown Candle Dye Liquid in 15, 50 and 100 ml (₹236, ₹590, ₹1,062) and as Candle Dye Liquid Brown in 15 and 50 gm (₹236, ₹472); the gram listing's 50 gm bottle is the cheaper way to buy 50. Pink is listed as a single ₹236 liquid dye with no size stated, so for a pink-heavy range either confirm the quantity on WhatsApp or build pink from red at a low dose and record the recipe. How much of each colour to order

The order quantity for any colour is one line of arithmetic: candles in that colour this season × wax per candle × your tested dose. Because no CSI dye page states a dosage, the table uses illustrative doses — 0.1%, 0.25% and 0.5% of wax weight — on a 200 g candle at 8% fragrance, which holds 184 g of wax. Replace the dose with the one your shade ladder produced before you order.

The table corrects a common instinct. A business making 1,000 candles in a season does not need a kilo of each colour: spread evenly across five colours at 0.1%, each colour is in 200 candles and needs 36.8 g, so five 50 gm bottles (₹2,360) cover the whole season with room to spare. Add a small buffer for the shade ladder, reference samples and the occasional re-pour, and round up to whole bottles.

Consistent colour comes from the scale, not the bottle

Many bench scales read in whole grams or tenths of a gram; CSI's Candle Making Weighing Scale page says it is for "accurately measuring wax, dye, fragrance oils" and shows grams or ounces, but does not state its smallest increment, so check yours. Even dosing a ten-candle batch (1,840 g of wax) needs only 1.84 g of dye at 0.1% — and on a scale that reads in whole grams, a half-gram reading error is 27% of the dose. That is the difference between two visibly different blues from the same recipe. Counting drops is worse, because drop size changes with the bottle, the temperature and how full it is.

The fix is a colour concentrate: dye dissolved into a known weight of your production wax at a round percentage, set into a slab and weighed out in grams. A 1% concentrate carries 1 g of dye in every 100 g, so the same ten-candle batch needs 184 g of concentrate — and a half-gram error on 184 g is 0.27%, invisible in the finished candle.

The bottles a bulk palette is built from

What buying bigger saves per candle

Here is the honest size of the bulk saving on colour, per 200 g candle at the illustrative 0.1% dose and in bottles for a 1,000-candle, single-colour season (184 g of dye).

Buying 15 g bottles for a real season costs ₹1,268 more than two 100 gm bottles, and 13 bottles to open, track and finish. Beyond 50 gm the saving is modest — ₹88 across the season on the gram line — so the case for 100 gm is as much about one bottle and one batch of concentrate per colour as it is about rupees. Colour stays a small line in any case: at 0.1% it is under ₹3 a candle even in 15 g bottles, against ₹110.22 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks in the same 200 g candle.

Mica in a bulk colour order

Mica belongs in a bulk colour order, but in its own column. It is commonly used for surface decoration — dusted tops, brushed edges, highlighted embeds — and in wax melts, where there is no wick. Inside a wicked candle it should go only after your own burn test in that wax, wick and size, because it is a powder rather than a dissolving dye. CSI's mica pages describe shimmer and a pearly glow and give no numeric dosage.

Because no dose is stated, size a mica order the way you size a dye order — by weighing what one piece actually uses. Weigh the mica pot, decorate ten candles or ten wax melts, weigh the pot again, and divide by ten. That grams-per-piece figure, multiplied by the season's count, is the order. Storing and reordering colour stock

No CSI dye page states a shelf life, and we are not going to invent one. What a bulk buyer can control is how the stock is kept and when it is reordered. Keep bottles tightly capped, upright, away from heat and direct sunlight, and write the date opened on each label. Keep concentrate slabs wrapped and labelled with their percentage and date. Use the oldest bottle of a colour first. And pour a reference sample from each new bottle before it goes into production, comparing it with the sample you kept from the last one.

Reordering is simplest as a reorder point: when a colour's remaining grams fall to the amount you use in the time a reorder takes to arrive and be checked, reorder. A colour using 36.8 g a season can safely run from one 50 gm bottle; a colour using 184 g needs the second 100 gm bottle ordered while the first still has plenty left. For palettes reordered on a regular cycle, one WhatsApp message with the colour list is quicker than seven separate carts — and it is where recurring pricing and GST invoicing are handled.
