The arithmetic, done plainly

Start with the headline number, because it is the one that sells rolls. The Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs is ₹706.82 for 61 metres, which the catalogue computes at ₹11.59 per metre. The next cheapest wick sold by length is Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch diameter) at ₹708 for 10 metres, which is ₹70.80 per metre. That is a little over six times the price. Against Eco Braided Wicks at ₹472 for 5 metres — ₹94.40 per metre — the roll is about eight times cheaper per metre. On that comparison alone the roll looks like an obvious buy, and a great many supplier pages will let you stop there.

Do not stop there. You do not sell metres. You sell candles, and a container candle needs a wick that has been cut to length, threaded into a metal tab, crimped, stuck down and centred. The roll gives you the first ingredient of that and one of the fittings. It does not give you the finished item, and it does not give you the labour.

₹706.82 divided by 100 tabs is ₹7.0682. Round it to ₹7.07. A ready-made Eco C1 is ₹5.90. The roll is ₹1.17 more expensive per finished container wick than the ready-made equivalent, and that is before you have picked up a pair of scissors. On a hundred candles that is ₹117 of extra cash and roughly forty extra minutes of your evening. There is no rate at which that trade makes sense, because it loses on both axes at once — you are paying more money in order to do more work.

There is one pre-tabbed comparison the roll wins on price, and it deserves stating because it cuts against the argument this page is making. If the braid on the roll turns out to suit a jar that would otherwise need the heavier Thick (C2) wick at ₹9.44, then ₹7.07 from the roll is ₹2.37 cheaper per wick — ₹237 saved on a hundred, against about 42 minutes of extra work, which implies an hourly rate of roughly ₹339. That is a real saving if and only if the roll's braid genuinely burns the way your vessel needs. It is not a like-for-like product swap. Braided cotton on a roll and an Eco braided wick are different constructions, and the only way to know which one opens your melt pool properly is to burn three identical jars side by side. Custom lengths: the real reason to buy a roll

Here is where the roll stops losing. A hundred tabs at a typical container length of about 12 cm per wick consumes roughly 12 metres of the 61. That leaves about 49 metres on the spool with no tabs to attach it to — which sounds like waste until you remember that an entire category of candle does not use tabs at all.

Pillars, moulded shapes, taper candles and sculptural work are wicked by threading a length of wick through the mould and knotting or sealing it at the base, not by sticking a tab to a jar bottom. There is no tab in that process, so pre-tabbed wick is actively the wrong product: you would be paying for a metal fitting you then have to cut off. What a roll needs on the bench, and what that costs

A roll on its own is not a working system. You are taking on a manufacturing step the supplier used to do for you, and that step needs equipment. None of it is expensive, but it is real, it is one-off, and it sits on top of the ₹706.82.

When cutting your own genuinely pays

Two conditions, and both have to hold. Fail either one and the roll is the wrong purchase.

The scale argument points the opposite way to the one makers expect: as volume rises the roll gets less attractive, not more. At 100 candles a month, 42 minutes of cutting is an annoyance. At 1,000 a month it is seven hours of bench time that could be pouring, and the cash penalty is ₹1,170 rather than ₹117. Storing and handling a roll

Sixty-one metres of braided cotton is a year or more of stock for most makers, which means the roll will spend far longer in storage than in use. Three things ruin it, and all three are avoidable.

Braided cotton is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air, and a damp wick burns badly. It lights reluctantly, gutters, and gives an inconsistent melt pool you will spend a fortnight blaming on the wax. In a coastal monsoon this is not theoretical. Keep the roll in a sealed bag or box with the lid actually closed, off the floor, away from an outside wall. If a batch of wicks starts behaving differently from the last one and nothing else in your recipe has changed, the roll's storage is the first thing to check.

The braid's structure is what sets how fast it draws wax. Flatten it under a 5 kg bag of wax for three months and you have changed the capillary behaviour of the wick without changing the product code on your cost sheet — which is exactly the sort of invisible variable that makes a maker think their wax has changed. Keep the roll on its core, standing or hanging, with nothing stacked on it. When you pull a length, unwind it rather than yanking it off the side of the spool; yanking both stretches the braid and leaves the rest of the roll in a tangle you will fight for months.

Dust and wax swarf settle into an exposed braid and do not come out. Keep the roll away from open fragrance oil and the bench where you decant it. Wick that has absorbed stray oil burns unpredictably and inconsistently along its length, and you will not be able to see which section is affected. A zip bag costs nothing and removes the whole problem. Cut with a clean blade or a proper trimmer rather than blunt household scissors — a frayed end is harder to thread through a tab and harder to feed through a mould with a wicking needle.
