Does Wick Size Affect Hot Throw in Soy Candles?

Does a bigger wick always mean stronger scent? No. A bigger wick helps only until the pool reaches the glass. Past that it adds flame height, soot, mushrooming and heat without adding surface — and it burns the candle down faster, so the same ₹152.69 of materials buys you fewer scented hours.
Which Eco wick should I start with? CSI sells Eco Candle Wicks in two grades: Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each, both in packs from 10 to 1000. Wick sizes by jar diameter are not published per wick, so start at C1 for jars around 6 cm, ladder to C2 if the pool stalls, and test-burn.
What about jars wider than 8 cm? The Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page states they are engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm, at ₹12.00 each and 10.16 cm tall. Above roughly 9 cm, two smaller wicks often beat one large one — two 55 mm pools give 47.52 cm² against 78.54 cm² for a full single pool.
Where the wick actually touches the fragrance
A lit candle is a small, self-regulating fuel system. Capillary action draws liquid wax up the wick, the flame vaporises and burns it, and the heat radiating down and outwards melts more wax at the surface. Everything that makes a room smell happens in the shallow dish of liquid wax that heat creates — fragrance dissolved in that wax warms, evaporates and drifts. The flame itself contributes almost nothing to scent; what goes up the wick is burnt.
So the wick controls throw through two levers, and only two. The first is how wide the pool gets, which sets the area available for evaporation. The second is how warm the pool runs, which sets how fast molecules leave that area. A wick one step too small loses on both at once: a narrow pool is also a cooler pool, because the heat is spread over less wax and the cold glass wall is never reached. That is why an under-wicked soy candle so often reads as “no smell at all” rather than “slightly less smell”.
The numbers are unkind to guesswork because area follows the square of the width. In a jar 6 cm across inside, a pool 45 mm wide covers 15.90 cm² of 28.27 cm² — 56%. In a 7 cm jar, a 50 mm pool covers 19.63 cm² of 38.48 cm² — 51%. In both cases the pool looks nearly right to the eye and delivers about half the surface. Half the surface is roughly half the evaporation, and no amount of fragrance oil recovers geometry.
Pool area by jar diameter — the arithmetic that decides everything
Every jar has one number that matters for wicking: the inside diameter at the wax surface. Glass is thick, and a 7 cm outer rim can be 6.4 cm inside, which is one wick step's worth of difference. Measure with a steel ruler laid across the empty jar, or drop a paper strip in and mark where it meets. Then use the table: full pool area is π × radius², and the coverage columns show what a short pool actually delivers.

Read down the “10 mm short” column and the point of the page appears. In the 6 cm jar, a pool 10 mm short still delivers 69% of the surface. In the 10 cm jar, a pool 10 mm short delivers 81% — proportionally much less is lost, because the missing ring is a smaller fraction of a bigger circle. Small jars are punished hardest by a slightly-too-small wick, which is exactly the situation most Indian gifting brands are in with 100–150 g votives and jars.
What CSI stocks, and which wick belongs on which jar
Here is the honest framing before the table: CSI does not publish a wick size chart by jar diameter, because the right wick depends on your wax grade, your fragrance load, your dye and your jar's wall thickness as well as its width. What the pages do state is the construction and the intended use, and that is enough to narrow the ladder to two candidates. Everything after that is a test burn. Two accessories make a ladder test repeatable rather than approximate. A Wick Centering Device at ₹118.00 for five, or a Steel Wick Holder at ₹50.00 each in tens with a three-hole layout for single, double or triple wicks, keeps the wick upright while the wax sets — an off-centre wick makes a lopsided pool and a meaningless reading. Candle Wick Stickers at ₹100.00 for forty hold the tab to the base through the pour. A reviewer of the bamboo holder makes the point that matters: it does not exert pressure on the wick, so the wick sets straight.
The three-jar ladder, run so the answer is trustworthy
The test costs ₹514.72 at the series unit: three jars, each 200 g of CSI 464 (₹101.48) with 16 g of Citrus Lemon at 8% of wax weight (₹45.31), and one wick each — C1 at ₹5.90, C2 at ₹9.44 and a wooden wick at ₹59.00. Everything except the wick stays identical: same melt, same addition temperature, same jar, same cure, same room.
The decision rule is deliberately conservative: take the smallest wick that reaches the glass by about the third hour without a deep, hot pool. If C1 reaches the wall, keep C1 and put the ₹354.00 you would have spent on C2 across a hundred candles into better packaging. If C1 stalls at 51% and C2 reaches the wall, you have bought roughly double the evaporating surface for ₹3.54 a candle, which is the best-value change available anywhere in a soy candle. If both stall, the jar is wider than this ladder covers and the braided wick is the next test.
Over-wicking: what a louder candle actually costs
Once the pool touches the wall, the evaporating area is fixed at the jar's full area — 38.48 cm² in a 7 cm jar, and not one square centimetre more, whatever wick you fit. A larger wick from that point adds heat and flame height. Some of that heat does raise pool temperature, which does raise evaporation rate, and that is the grain of truth behind “bigger wick, stronger smell”. The rest of it is cost: soot on the glass, a mushroomed wick tip, a jar too hot to hold, and a candle that is gone sooner.

There is a second cost that rarely gets counted: burn hours. Take the same ₹152.69 of materials in a 200 g candle. Illustratively, if the C1 version consumes wax at about 5 g an hour it gives roughly 40 hours of burn, which is ₹3.82 an hour of materials; if an over-sized wick takes it to about 7 g an hour, the same candle gives roughly 28.6 hours, or ₹5.46 an hour. Those consumption rates are illustrative — weigh your own jar before and after a three-hour burn and you will have your real number in one session — but the direction is not in doubt. A customer who paid for a candle that lasted three weeks instead of five will notice, and will say so in a review long before they say anything about pool area.
Soy adds one more wrinkle. Because soy is a soft wax with a low melt point, an over-sized wick can liquefy the whole surface within the first hour and keep it molten and hot for the rest of the session. A hot, deep pool accelerates the loss of the lighter fragrance molecules, so an over-wicked soy candle can smell impressive in its first two burns and noticeably flat by its fifth. Under-wicking loses you scent immediately and visibly; over-wicking loses it slowly, which is why it survives so much longer in a product line.
Wide jars: two small wicks or one big one
A single wick heats the surface radially outwards from one point. The further the glass is from that point, the more wick you need to reach it, and the hotter the centre has to run to get there. Somewhere around 8–9 cm that trade stops paying, which is why the Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page names 8 cm as the threshold for its heavy braided construction, and why multi-wicking exists.
The arithmetic for two wicks is easy to get wrong, because two pools in one jar overlap and merge rather than staying separate discs. Treat it as an upper bound instead: in a 10 cm jar with 78.54 cm² of surface, two wicks each capable of a 55 mm pool bound the covered area at 47.52 cm² — about 60% of the jar, before overlap — and they get there with two modest flames instead of one tall one. That is the real advantage: full coverage at a lower peak temperature, less soot, and a flame height that suits a 500 g jar visually.
Practically, the sequence for a wide jar is: try one braided wick at ₹12.00 first because it is one variable and one flame; if the pool still stalls or the flame runs tall to reach the glass, test two C2s at ₹9.44 each (₹18.88 a candle) spaced about halfway between centre and wall on opposite sides. A Steel Wick Holder with its three-hole layout is designed for exactly this and fits jars up to about 9 cm per its page. Double-wicking a jar that a single wick already closes is the most expensive form of over-wicking there is: ₹11.80 a candle in C1s alone, ₹1,180.00 across a hundred, plus double the soot risk.
The same wick behaves differently in different soy grades
A wick that closes a 7 cm jar in one soy grade may stall or overshoot in another, because the grades differ in how readily they melt and how they hold heat at the surface. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a soft, low-melting blend that a given wick will liquefy more easily. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as its working range for melting and pouring. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a melting point, and its page recommends Eco Wicks specifically. Those are different working conditions for the same piece of cotton.
So treat the wick and the wax as one specification. If you move from CSI 464 to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or to CSI 468 for a new line, re-run the ladder on the new grade before committing — it is three jars and ₹514.72, against a festive run that pools badly. The same applies to a big change in fragrance load or to adding dye: both change how the wax draws and burns. This is also why a wick chart copied from an overseas blog written around a different wax will mislead you here, and why CSI does not publish one.
What the wick line costs across a real batch
At the series unit a candle is ₹101.48 of wax, ₹45.31 of fragrance oil and one wick. The wick is between ₹5.90 and ₹59.00 of a ₹152.69-and-up candle, which is why wick decisions should be made on performance and only then on price. But across a hundred candles the differences become real money, and they are worth seeing next to each other.

Set those figures against what a wicking mistake costs. A hundred under-wicked candles is ₹15,269.20 of wax, oil and wicks poured into jars that give roughly half their surface — not a total loss, because the candles still burn and sell, but a line that will quietly earn fewer repeat orders than it should. The step that would have prevented it is ₹354.00 across the same hundred, or ₹514.72 for the ladder that tells you whether you needed the step at all. There is no cheaper insurance anywhere in this craft.
One practical note on buying. The wick packs run from 10 to 1000, and the per-unit price does not fall with quantity on the Eco range — ₹5.90 is ₹5.90 whether you buy ten or a thousand. That is unusually convenient for a small maker: there is no penalty for buying the twenty-pack while you are testing, and no bulk discount you are missing out on by not committing early. Wooden wicks are the exception, falling from ₹59.00 to ₹41.30 at a hundred. For quantities beyond the listed packs, ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming.
