How to Calculate Wax Cost Per Candle
Aktie
Is 10 kg cheaper than 1 kg? Only for Pearl and CSI 468 on CSI's listed prices.
How do I calculate it? Wax grams (92% of fill) × price per gram.
Does bulk save money? Little on listed packs; ask for a quote above them.
Our earlier guides give wax cost per candle as an answer. This page is the method, so you can calculate it yourself for any wax, any size and any price change.
The method
| Wax | Lowest per kg | Wax / 200 g | At 1 kg price | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes) | ₹507.40 | ₹93.36 | ₹93.36 | 100% soy container wax in flakes |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹424.80 | ₹78.16 | ₹82.80 | soy-blend container wax in pearl form with a pearlescent finish |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹399.00 | ₹73.42 | ₹73.42 | 100% soy container wax in chunks, produced in India |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹598.00 | ₹110.03 | ₹110.22 | container and jar wax |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (flakes) | ₹637.00 | ₹117.21 | ₹119.60 | coconut-soy blend |
| Soy Pillar Wax | ₹600.00 | ₹110.40 | ₹110.40 | soy chunks made for pillar and designer mould candles |
Where the wax-cost method goes wrong, and how to check your own figure
The arithmetic is rarely where makers slip. The errors come from the inputs: the weight you start from, the way you count fragrance, and the price you plug in.
Start from the weight that is really in the jar
A jar sold as 200 ml does not tell you your fill in grams, and most makers stop short of the brim anyway. Weigh an empty jar, fill it to your usual line, let it set, then weigh it again. The difference is your fill weight. Do it once per jar style. If your "200 g" candle actually holds 180 g, every cost you have worked out is too high and every stock plan is too big.
Decide which fragrance convention you use
CSI's figures treat fragrance as 8% of the whole candle, so wax is 92% of the fill. Many product pages state load as a share of wax weight instead: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, for instance, states a maximum of 13% of wax weight. The two conventions give slightly different wax figures. At 8% of the total, a 200 g fill holds 184 g of wax. At 8% of wax weight, it holds 200 ÷ 1.08, about 185.2 g. The gap widens at higher loads, so use one convention everywhere.
Use the price you pay, not the lowest one listed
Published per-candle tables use each wax's lowest listed price per kilogram. Buy the 500 g bag of CSI 464 and you pay ₹520.00 per kg, not ₹507.40. Buy CSI 468 one kilogram at a time and you pay ₹650.00, not the ₹637.00 of the 5 kg bag. Your cost sheet should carry the per-kilogram price of the pack you actually order, refreshed every time you reorder.
Put the answer next to a selling price
One more step turns a number into a decision. Divide the wax cost by your selling price. At an example price of ₹499, the ₹93.36 of CSI 464 in a 200 g candle is 93.36 ÷ 499, roughly 19% of the price. At an example ₹999 it is about 9%. That share tells you how much a future wax price change can hurt. A 10% rise in wax moves your margin by a tenth of that share, not by 10%.
Where this page fits
This page overlaps an older CSI guide, so it takes a narrower job and leaves the rest to that guide. In the Candle Business series, CSI-928 (wax cost per candle) covers the business side.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We publish every pack price, so every per-kilogram and per-candle figure here can be checked against the product pages — including the ones that show a bigger bag is not cheaper.
Prices are taken from live CSI stock in September 2026. Where a product page does not publish a specification, this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load 8% of total candle weight, so wax is 92% of the fill (a 200 g candle = 184 g wax + 16 g oil). Order plans add a 5% wastage allowance (10% where stated for festive buffers). "Cheapest listed packs" is the lowest-cost combination of listed pack sizes, preferring fewer bags when prices tie within a few rupees. Candle counts are rounded down. Costs are core materials only and exclude jar, label, packaging, labour, freight and GST unless stated. Wax stated fragrance maximums are the wax maker's formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Pack sizes not listed on the store (2, 20, 25, 100 kg) are shown as combinations of listed packs; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
