How to Improve Hot Throw Without Adding More Fragrance Oil

What is the single most common fix for weak hot throw in soy? An undersized wick. If the pool is not reaching the glass by about three hours, the candle is only releasing fragrance from part of its surface — a 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is 51% of the available area. How long should I cure soy before judging hot throw? The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks; 14–21 days is what most soy container brands settle on. Judging a three-day-old jar and then buying more oil is the most expensive mistake in this whole cluster.
Does the room I test in change the result? Enormously. The same candle that fills a 3 m by 3 m bedroom will read as weak in an open-plan living room with a ceiling fan running. Test in a closed room of a realistic size, fan off, for three hours, with a rested nose — and describe that room on your product page so customers judge it the same way.
Why more fragrance oil is the wrong dial to turn first
Start with the arithmetic, because it settles the argument before any physics does. At the series unit — 200 g of wax and 16 g of oil at 8% of wax weight — moving from 8% to 10% adds 4 g of oil per candle. In Lavender Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing that is ₹20.88 a candle: ₹2,088.40 across a hundred candles, ₹10,442.00 across five hundred, and it recurs on every batch for as long as the product exists. Going up one wick size, from Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 to Thick (C2) at ₹9.44, costs ₹3.54 a candle — ₹1,770.00 across the same five hundred. Curing a fortnight longer costs nothing at all except the cash tied up in stock.
Then the ceilings. Every CSI soy grade publishes a maximum as a percentage of wax weight: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish one — ask on WhatsApp rather than guessing. Where the fragrance oil's own page gives a lower range, and many do, the lower figure governs. If you are already at 10% in CSI 464 there is no dial left to turn; if you are at 8% you have two points of headroom and they are the most expensive two points available to you.
And then the thing that is genuinely worth saying out loud: past a point, more oil does not produce more smell. Wax can only hold so much fragrance in solution. Beyond that the excess separates out, pools on the surface, sweats through the top in an Indian summer, drowns the wick and produces a sooty flame and a smaller pool — which means less hot throw, not more, from more oil. Seven levers that work with the load held constant
Hot throw is fragrance leaving a liquid surface. That gives you three families of lever. Make the liquid surface bigger or hotter — that is the wick, the vessel and the wax grade. Give the fragrance more time to arrive where it can leave — that is the cure and the storage. Or stop mis-measuring what is already there — that is the room, the burn length and your nose. Nothing else on this page is doing anything mystical; every lever below sits in one of those three families.

Read the cost column downwards and the reason for the plan becomes obvious. The top six levers cost either a few rupees or nothing, and five of them can be read within a fortnight. The bottom lever is the most expensive and the slowest to prove. Any sensible order of work starts at the top.
Week 1 — the wick ladder
Hot throw scales with the area of liquid wax, and liquid wax area is set by the wick. The arithmetic is unforgiving: in a jar with a 70 mm inside diameter the full pool is about 38 cm². A pool that stops at 60 mm is 28 cm², or 73% of it. A pool that stops at 50 mm is 20 cm² — 51%. A candle running at half its available surface is not a fragrance problem. It is a wick problem wearing a fragrance problem's clothes, and no amount of extra oil will widen that pool.
CSI does not publish a wick-size-by-diameter table on the individual wick pages, and we are not going to invent one. What the pages do say is useful. Eco Candle Wicks come in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), are made from cotton and paper fibres, and are described as suited to natural waxes including soy. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are described as engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm and stand 10.16 cm tall. Burn all three on the same evening, in the same room, in identical jars, at the same cure age. That last point is what makes the week-1 comparison fair even though a seven-day cure is short of ideal: all three jars are equally under-cured, so the difference you read is the wick. Light them together, leave them for three hours, and walk out of the room and back in at the one-hour and three-hour marks rather than sitting with them.
Record four things per jar at three hours: pool diameter in millimetres, pool depth, flame height, and a throw score from 0 to 5 taken from a metre away as you walk back in. Then look at your own soot, mushrooming and glass temperature. A wick that gives a full pool and a clean flame wins. A wick that gives a full pool with a 20 mm flame, black glass and a mushroom on the tip has over-wicked the jar; it will throw hard for one burn and then tunnel, smoke and frighten customers, which is the subject of the live guide on tunnelling with the correct wick.
Week 2 — cure, storage and the fourteen-day climb
Soy is a soft vegetable wax that keeps crystallising for days after the pour, and the fragrance redistributes as it does. That is why the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing, and why 14–21 days is the schedule the soy container trade generally uses. Week 2 of this plan exists to put a number on that climb in your wax, with your oil, in your climate — because the size of the gain varies by fragrance family and nobody else's number is yours.
The method is three identical jars, the same wick, the same load, poured in the same session, burned at day 7, day 14 and day 21. Nothing else differs. Score each at three hours from a metre away, in the same room, and write the numbers down before you compare them. If day 14 beats day 7 by a clear point and day 21 adds nothing, you have found your schedule and can quote lead times accordingly. If day 21 is still climbing, you are working with a heavy base-note oil and your production calendar needs three weeks, not two.
Storage is the other half of week 2 and it is entirely free. Cure with the lid off for the first 24 hours so the top sets flat without condensation dripping onto it, then lid on. Keep the jars at 20–30°C, out of sunlight, away from the kitchen, and not on top of a cupboard under a ceiling fan. An Indian workroom at 38°C is not curing candles, it is slowly cooking them: you will see oil beading at the surface, and oil on the surface is oil that has left the wax. The CSI 464 page asks for cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture for the wax itself, and the finished candle wants the same treatment.
There is an honest tension to acknowledge here. Some CSI fragrance oil pages give much shorter cure times — the Dark Vanilla page, for example, gives 48 to 72 hours for soy. Those figures are about when a candle is usable, and they are fair: a three-day candle burns and smells. The 14–21 day figure is about when soy stops improving, which is a different question, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page points the same way with its 1–2 weeks. Week 2 of this plan is how you decide which number governs your own production schedule instead of taking either on trust.
Week 3 — the room, the burn length and the honest reading
A 200 g jar candle is a small fragrance source. Put it in a 3 m by 3 m bedroom with the door closed and it will scent the room comfortably. Put the same candle in an open-plan living-and-dining space with a ceiling fan at speed three and a balcony door open, and it will read as weak — because the fragrance is being diluted into ten times the volume and blown out of the window as fast as it arrives. Nothing is wrong with the candle. Everything is wrong with the measurement.
Week 3 makes that explicit. Take two jars from the same pour, cured the same number of days, with the winning wick from week 1. Burn one in a small closed room and one in your largest living space, on separate evenings, three hours each, fan off in both. Score both from a metre away on walking in. If the small room scores a 4 and the large room a 2, your candle is fine and your product page needs a sentence about room size. If both score 2, you have a real problem and week 1 and week 2 will tell you which.
Burn length is the other half of the honest reading. Soy needs time to open a full pool; a 45-minute burn in a wide jar may never reach the glass, and judging throw at 45 minutes systematically under-reports every candle you make. Three hours is the standard test burn, and it is also roughly what a customer does in an evening, which makes it the right number twice over. Anything a candle cannot do in three hours it will not do.
Then there is your nose, which is the least reliable instrument in the workshop and the one you trust most. Olfactory receptors fatigue within minutes of continuous exposure — sit in the room with a burning candle for an hour and you will genuinely stop smelling it, while a visitor walks in and is hit by it. This is why every scoring instruction on this page says to leave the room and walk back in. Where you can, have someone who was not in the workshop score blind.
The process levers you can fix inside a single batch
Add temperature. Fragrance oil needs the wax hot enough to take it fully into solution. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for 85°C within an 80–90°C band; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 works much cooler, with a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C. Adding below the stated band risks an incomplete bind, which shows up later as surface oil and weak throw. Adding far above it gains nothing. Stir time. The Chunks page asks for two full minutes of slow stirring after the fragrance goes in. Two minutes is much longer than it feels — most makers give it twenty seconds and a few swirls. Slow and thorough beats fast and vigorous, which whips air into the wax and gives you a cratered top. Set a timer. This is the single most under-done step in home candle making and it is completely free.
Melt control. A double boiler that swings between 70°C and 95°C makes every batch slightly different, and a pot that cools while you are weighing oil means you are adding fragrance below the stated band without realising it. The vessel, at the same fill. Two jars holding the same 200 g of wax can have very different mouths. A wide, shallow jar opens a larger pool for the same wick and throws harder; a tall narrow jar concentrates the heat and often tunnels. If your jar is a tall cylinder and your throw is weak, a wider vessel at the same fill weight is a real lever — and it costs you the price difference of the jar, not a rupee of oil. The wax grade, at the same load. This is the only lever here that changes your materials bill meaningfully. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹130.00 per 200 g is ₹28.52 more than CSI 464 at ₹101.48, and its page claims hot and cold throw along with an ultra-smooth finish; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹119.80 per 200 g carries a stated ceiling of 13% if you later decide you do want headroom. Swap the grade, hold the load, keep everything else identical, and read it at day 14. Do this last, after weeks 1 to 3, because a grade change also changes your temperatures and can confound the earlier results.

The plan is not free — ₹1,774.88 of materials is a real number for a maker running batches of twenty. What it buys is the right to stop guessing. Spent once, it tells you which of the five rows below it you actually need, and four of those five rows cost you money on every candle for the life of the product. If the plan shows that a ₹3.54 wick change fixes your throw, it has paid for itself before you have made 85 candles at the higher load you were about to adopt.
How to run one week's round properly
Three Indian workshops, three different winning levers
Pune, 60 jars a month, wick
A maker at 10% in CSI 464 — the stated ceiling — with weak throw and nowhere left to go on load. Week 1 showed a 52 mm pool at three hours in a 70 mm jar, about 51% of the available surface at 50 mm and not much better at 52. Going from C1 to C2 gave a full pool by two hours forty and a clean flame. Throw score went from 2 to 4. Cost of the fix: ₹3.54 a candle, ₹1,770.00 across a 500-jar year. The maker had been quoted a formulation change that would have cost twenty times that.
Kochi, monsoon season, cure and storage
A maker whose candles scored 4 in January and 2 in July with no recipe change. Week 2 found the answer: cured jars were being stored uncovered on an open rack in a room that sat at 32°C and 90% humidity, and burn tests were being run at day 4 because orders were tight. Lids on from day 2, a cupboard on an inside wall, and a fortnight of cure restored the January score. Cost of the fix: nothing but schedule discipline. The lesson is that in coastal India, storage is a formulation variable whether you treat it as one or not.
Gurugram, corporate gifting, the room
A brand selling 300 jars into a Diwali corporate order, testing in a 5 m by 7 m showroom with the air conditioning running, concluding the candles were weak, and preparing to move from 8% to 10% — ₹10,442.00 of extra Lavender across the order. Week 3 settled it: the same jar in a 3 m by 3 m closed room scored 4. The candles were fine; the showroom was the wrong instrument. The brand kept the load, added a line to the product page about the room size the candle is built for, and poured by mid-October to give the order a full cure before Diwali on 8 November 2026.
