What makes a soy wax give smooth tops? A pour window you can actually hit in your room. CSI 468 publishes a pour temperature of 58–60°C; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is poured at 75–80°C; the CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. A one-pour wax and a slow cool-down do more for tops than any finish claim.
Can a product page prove good glass adhesion? No. Pages describe adhesion — CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are all described as having excellent adhesion to glass — but adhesion is decided in your workshop by jar temperature, pour temperature and cooling speed. Treat the claim as a shortlist filter, then run the nine-jar audit.
Which CSI grade gives all three at once? On published figures, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is the only container grade that publishes a 13% ceiling, a melt range, a fragrance-add range and a pour temperature together, at ₹599.00/kg. CSI 464 costs ₹507.40/kg and is the cheaper answer if 10% is enough for your oils.
Your three goals are three different properties — and the wax owns a different share of each
Start by separating what you asked for. Hot throw is fragrance leaving a liquid melt pool while the candle burns. Smooth tops is what the surface looks like after the wax crystallises and contracts on cooling. Glass adhesion is whether the wax stays pressed against the jar wall as it contracts, or pulls away and leaves the pale patches everyone calls wet spots. Different physics, different timescales, different levers.
The wax page can speak to all three, but with very different authority. On throw, it gives you a hard number: the stated maximum fragrance load, which is the wax manufacturer's formulation ceiling, not a rule imposed from outside. On tops, it gives you working temperatures — melt range, fragrance-add range, pour temperature — which define the window you have to hit. On adhesion, it mostly gives you adjectives. CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are each described on their pages as having excellent adhesion to glass or containers. That is a real and useful claim about how the wax was formulated. It is not a measurement of your jar, in your room, in July.
So the honest split is this. Buying the right wax gets you headroom for throw, a usable pour window for tops, and a wax that was designed to cling rather than shrink away. Everything after that is wick size, jar shape, jar temperature, room temperature, cooling speed and cure length. A maker with the best container soy in the catalogue and a wick two sizes too small will still have weak hot throw and a tunnelled candle.

The eight characteristics worth checking before you buy
This is the checklist to run against any container soy wax, CSI's or anyone else's. It is ordered by how much of your three goals each characteristic actually moves, not by how prominently it appears on a product page.

Goal 1 · Strong hot throw: headroom, the lower-of-two rule, and the pool you keep forgetting
Fragrance ceilings are stated as a percentage of total wax weight, which is how CSI's pages express them. On a 200 g candle, 8% is 16 g of oil, 10% is 20 g and 13% is 26 g. In money, using Woody Oud Fragrance Oil at ₹4.53/g, moving from 8% to 10% adds ₹18.12 per candle and moving from 8% to 13% adds ₹45.31. Across 100 candles that is ₹1,812.48 and ₹4,531.20. Headroom is not free.
A ceiling is a maximum the wax is formulated to hold, not a recommendation. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page is unusually explicit about this: 8% as a starting point, 10% recommended, 13% maximum, with thorough test burning at 13%. That is the shape of a good ceiling statement — it tells you where to start as well as where to stop.
Then apply the lower-of-two rule. Your oil has a stated candle range too, and many CSI oil pages give 6–10% of total wax weight for soy candles — Citrus Lemon, Lavender, Woody Oud and Roasted Coffee all state that range, while the Sandalwood Fragrance Oil page states up to 10% for soy. Where the wax ceiling and the oil range differ, the lower figure governs. Pouring 13% of an oil whose page stops at 10% means you have left the oil manufacturer's stated range, whatever the wax allows. A 13% wax buys you headroom you can only use with oils rated for it.
The characteristic nobody lists is release — how readily a molten wax lets fragrance go. It is not published as a number by anyone, and we are not going to invent one. In general practice, soy is described as more reluctant than paraffin, and coconut-soy blends are often described as freer, which is why the CSI 468 and CSI 464 pages both claim strong hot and cold throw. Claims are a reason to shortlist, never a reason to skip a burn test.
And the part that is not the wax at all: the pool. Hot throw comes off the liquid surface. A 50 mm pool in a jar 70 mm across inside exposes 19.63 cm² of liquid instead of 38.48 cm² — roughly half the surface that jar could give you. No ceiling on any wax page recovers that. If your candle is short of the wall at three hours, the wick is your throw problem, not the wax (wrong wick size).
Goal 2 · Smooth tops: the pour window is the characteristic, not the finish claim
Surface quality is decided in the fifteen minutes after the pour and the two hours after that. Wax poured too hot stays liquid longer, shrinks more as it sets and tends to pull into a dip or a crater around the wick; wax poured too cool starts crystallising before it has levelled and leaves ridges, lumps and a rough skin. The characteristic that decides which of those you get is the width and position of the published pour window relative to your actual room.

Notice what the table is really saying. A narrow window is not a worse wax — it is a wax that demands a thermometer. CSI 468's 58–60°C pour is the easiest melt to hold on a domestic induction plate and the least forgiving to eyeball. A wide stated range is not a licence to pour anywhere inside it: pick one temperature, write it on the batch sheet and hold it, because consistency between jars matters more to a customer than the exact figure.
The second characteristic behind tops is single-pour behaviour. A wax that levels and sets without a second top-up has no seam line, no re-melted ring and no second cooling cycle to argue with. CSI 464 and CSI 468 are both sold as single-pour container waxes and Eco Soy CSI 400 is described as often setting in one pour. If you are pouring 60 jars for a Diwali order, that characteristic is worth more than any adjective on the page.
The third is what the wax does over the next 48 hours in Indian conditions. Frosting — the white crystalline bloom on the surface — is a natural behaviour of soy, and the CSI pages that mention it claim minimal frosting rather than none, which is the honest form of that claim. A workshop that swings from 34°C at 3 pm to 24°C at 6 am gives soy every reason to re-crystallise. Slow the cooling, not the wax: a cardboard box over the cooling tray, jars off a stone floor, no fan (why soy candles frost).
Goal 3 · Glass adhesion: contraction, jar temperature and what no wax can promise in May
All wax contracts as it goes from liquid to solid. In a container candle, that contraction pulls the wax inward and away from the wall unless the wax is still soft enough, and the glass still warm enough, for the two to stay in contact. Where contact is lost, air sits between wax and glass and scatters light: the pale patches called wet spots, which contain no water at all. This is a mechanical story, and the wax page contributes one line to it — that the grade is a container wax formulated to adhere.

Two honest points a supplier ought to make here. The first is that adhesion is reversible in both directions: patches can appear a week after pouring and, in warmer weather, can partly disappear again as the wax softens and re-contacts the glass. A candle that develops a patch in a December warehouse and looks perfect again in March has not been repaired; it has been re-warmed. The second is that no container soy on this or any catalogue will hold perfect adhesion through a parcel that sits at 45°C in a stationary delivery van and then cools overnight. Choose the grade, then choose the route and the packaging.
The practical consequence for your shortlist: adhesion should not be the characteristic you pick a wax on, because all three CSI container grades make the same claim and the difference in your workshop will be swamped by jar handling. Pick on ceiling and pour window, then earn adhesion with process.
Where the three goals fight each other
This is the section most buying guides skip, and it is the reason makers churn through four waxes in a year. The trade-offs below are mechanism, not measurement: they tell you which way each dial pushes, so you can stop chasing a setting that does not exist.

Read the last row twice. Cure is the only lever in that table that improves one goal and damages none of the others, and it costs nothing but shelf space and patience. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally one to two weeks before burn testing; the common standard for soy container candles is 14 to 21 days depending on fragrance family. If your throw is disappointing on day three, you have not measured throw yet (why your candle needs a 14-day cure).
The second row is the one makers resist, because a wick costs less than a bag of wax and therefore feels like it cannot be the answer. Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each in C1 and ₹9.44 in C2 at the 100-pack, and CSI does not publish a wick-size table by candle diameter, so the sizing has to come from your own test burns. That is the honest position: two wick grades, a real difference in pool width, and no shortcut around burning a jar for three hours.

The scorecard produces a clear reading. If your oils are rated to 10% and you want the lowest cost per candle, CSI 464 is the answer, and the ₹18.32 per candle it saves against Chunks is ₹1,832.00 across a hundred candles. If you pour oils rated above 10% and want a published fragrance-add step to standardise your process, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks publishes the most complete working recipe of the three. If your priority is the smoothest possible surface and the lowest melt temperature, CSI 468 is the one to test, at ₹28.52 more per candle than CSI 464.
Two grades to rule out for this brief, in the interest of not wasting your money. Soy Pillar Wax at ₹600.00/kg is excellent at what it is for — moulds and designer candles, where clean release is the point — and clean release is the opposite of glass adhesion. Premium Coconut Soy Wax at ₹920.00/kg is a soy and virgin coconut oil blend sold in 500 g and 1 kg only, with no published ceiling or temperatures; it is a texture and positioning choice rather than a spec-led one, and at 200 g a candle it carries ₹184.00 of wax against ₹101.48 for CSI 464.
Eco Soy CSI 400 deserves a separate note. At ₹399.00/kg it is the cheapest container soy here — ₹79.80 of wax per 200 g candle, ₹21.68 less than CSI 464 — it is produced in India, it publishes a clear fragrance-add routine at 85°C with two minutes of gentle stirring, and its page states that no additives are needed. What it does not publish is a fragrance ceiling. If you are formulating a product line rather than making candles for friends, ask for that figure on WhatsApp before you scale, and in the meantime treat 8% as your working load rather than assuming a maximum.

The nine-jar characteristic audit you can run yourself
The point of the audit is not to find the best wax in general. It is to find the best wax for your jar, your oil and your room, which is the only question that affects your candles. Total materials: 1.8 kg of wax across three grades, 144 g of one fragrance oil and nine wicks — about ₹1,759.43, plus jars if you do not already have nine identical ones.
One last piece of arithmetic, because it decides whether the audit is worth doing. A hundred 200 g candles on CSI 464 at 8% with Woody Oud and a C1 wick carry ₹17,987.92 of wax, oil and wick before jars, labels, packaging and your time. Getting the grade wrong does not usually cost you that money — it costs you a batch you cannot sell, a fortnight of cure time you cannot get back, and, in October, a festive window that does not come round again until next year.
