Why does soy frosting appear two days after pouring and not immediately? Because the wax sets far faster than it settles. Cooling locks the fat crystals into a quick, disordered arrangement; over the next 24–72 hours at room temperature they reorganise towards their stable packing, and the fine crystal faces that form at the glass scatter light as a white bloom. Day two is when the change becomes visible, not when it starts.

Have I done something wrong, or is this normal for soy? Both can be true. Frosting is a natural behaviour of soy wax, not contamination and not a spoiled batch. What your process controls is how much of it shows: pour temperature, how fast the jars cooled in the first two hours, the jar itself, the dye load and the room's night-time swing. CSI's CSI 464 page describes low frosting and minimal blooming; no soy page anywhere promises none.

Which pour-day decision matters most? The first two hours of cooling. A jar that loses heat quickly — a cold jar, a fan, an air-conditioned room, a tiled floor — sets into the disordered form that later reorganises most visibly. Pouring inside the grade's stated window and then leaving the tray completely undisturbed at 25–30°C does more than any additive.

Does day-two frosting affect burn, throw or safety? No. It is a surface and near-glass optical effect. Burn, melt pool and hot throw are unchanged. It affects one thing only — what the candle looks like through glass — which is why the fix is often a container decision rather than a wax decision, and why matte jars at ₹70.80 each can be cheaper than the clear ones they replace.

Why do my soy candles look perfect after pouring and then frost two days later?
Because setting and settling are two different events, separated by about two days. When you pour, the wax cools through its setting range in minutes and the fat crystals lock into whatever arrangement they can form at that speed — usually a fine, disordered one that happens to be glossy and transparent at the glass. That is the candle you inspected on pour night, and it was genuinely good. Over the following 24 to 72 hours those crystals slowly reorganise towards the packing they prefer at room temperature, and the new, larger, more regular crystal faces at the glass wall scatter light instead of letting it through. You see white. Nothing was added, nothing went wrong in the box, and the wax is not contaminated — this is soy behaving like the vegetable fat it is. What your process controls is how much of the change is visible, and six decisions on pour day set that: the temperature you poured at, how quickly the jars lost heat in the first two hours, the jar itself, how much dye went in, the oil and load, and how far the room swings between the afternoon and the second night. The two-day delay is the clue, not the problem

Most makers describe this as the candle changing its mind. It is closer to the candle finally telling you what it decided on pour night.

When something goes wrong immediately — a sinkhole, a crack, a wick leaning — you can usually connect it to something you did in the previous ten minutes. A fault that surfaces two days later breaks that link, which is why this particular problem generates so much guesswork. Makers blame the courier, the humidity, the new batch of oil, the shop that sold them the jars. None of those is usually the answer.

Soy wax does two separate things after a pour, on two completely different clocks. It sets, which takes minutes to a couple of hours and is what you watched happen. Then it settles, which takes one to three days at ordinary room temperatures and which you cannot watch at all until the result arrives. The delay you are seeing is the gap between those two clocks. Nothing new happened on the second night; the second night is simply when the slower clock finished.

That matters practically, and this is the whole argument of the page: a candle inspected on pour night has not been inspected. You have looked at an intermediate state. Every photograph, every pass or fail, every decision to pack a carton for a courier that you take before day three is taken on incomplete information. Move the gate and half of the mystery disappears, because you start seeing the finished product instead of a draft of it.

Photographing the batch on pour night because it looks its best. It genuinely does look its best — that is the trap. Product photographs taken at hour six show a gloss that the customer will never receive, and every subsequent jar becomes a complaint waiting to be typed. Shoot the listing images from jars that are at least three days old, in ordinary indoor light, and your photographs and your parcels start describing the same object.

What actually happens in the 48 hours you cannot see

Soy is a fat. Fats set fast and reorganise slowly, and the second half of that sentence is the one candle makers are never told.

Soy wax is made of triglycerides — the same broad family as the fats in your kitchen — and like all of them it can solidify into more than one crystalline arrangement. When wax cools quickly it takes whichever arrangement it can form in the time available, which is a fine, jumbled one. That form is not the most stable one, and at room temperature the molecules keep shuffling towards a more ordered packing that they are more comfortable in. Larger, flatter crystal faces grow. Where they grow against the glass, they no longer sit flush with it, and the tiny gaps and facets scatter light. Scattered light reads as white, so the bloom appears to be on the surface when it is really a change in how the wax meets the glass.

Two consequences follow, and both are worth internalising. First, the direction of travel is one way: the wax is moving towards a more stable state, so frosting tends to increase slowly over weeks rather than reverse. Second, anything that speeds the initial setting — a cold jar, a draught, a fan, a tiled floor, an air-conditioned studio — makes the initial arrangement less ordered and gives the settling stage more distance to travel, which shows as more visible bloom. This is why the fix for a day-two problem is always something you do on day zero.

Colour changes nothing about the physics and everything about the visibility. White crystals on undyed off-white wax are barely noticeable. The same crystals on a deep blue, black or terracotta candle look like frost on a windscreen, which is why makers who use Candle Dye Liquid at ₹236.00 for 15 gm report frosting far more often than makers who pour uncoloured. The wax is not behaving differently. You have simply turned up the contrast.

The last row is the one that belongs specifically to a day-two complaint. A workroom in Pune or Bengaluru can sit at 30°C in the afternoon and fall to 20°C by four in the morning. Every one of those swings gives the settling wax another nudge, which is exactly why the bloom that was not there on Tuesday evening is unmistakable on Thursday morning. In a Delhi or Ahmedabad summer the swing is smaller but the whole range is higher, and the bloom often arrives later and lighter; in a Kochi monsoon the range is narrow and the frosting complaint is more often about a dull, flat surface than a bright bloom.

Blaming the courier for something that happened on your own bench. Parcels do get hot and vans do get shaken, and both can make an existing bloom more obvious. But a candle that frosts on your own shelf, in your own room, 48 hours after a pour, has not been anywhere. Keep three jars from every batch at home under the same conditions you ship in. If the held-back jars frost too, the courier is innocent and the pour-day audit above is your list.

Take one jar to a window, turn it slowly, and describe out loud where the white actually is. That sentence is half the diagnosis.

Frosting is not uniform, and the pattern is informative. Before you change anything, photograph three jars from the same tray against a plain background in daylight, and write down the pattern. Do it again after the next batch and you have a comparison that does not depend on memory.

That last row is worth stating clearly, because it is the most common misidentification. Frosting is white in the wax and looks matte and powdery; a wax-to-glass separation reads as a bright, silvery, sharply edged patch that changes appearance as you tilt the jar, because you are looking at a thin air gap. They have different causes and different fixes, and treating one as the other wastes a batch. If you can see the patch shift and flash as you rotate the jar, you are looking at a gap, not at crystals.

THE TORCH TEST
Hold a phone torch against the far side of a jar in a dark room. Frosting dims and diffuses the light evenly, like tracing paper. An air gap between wax and glass throws a distinct bright edge where the light catches it. Thirty seconds, no cost, and it stops you re-pouring a batch for the wrong reason. Do it on the same jar at day three and day ten and note whether the pattern is growing or steady.

Two honest observations about that table. The first is that a grade change is the most expensive way to attack a cosmetic problem and is rarely the first thing to try: moving 100 jars from CSI 464 to CSI 468 adds ₹28.52 per candle, or ₹2,852.00 across the run, and CSI 468 also pours in a completely different temperature window, so you are re-learning your process at the same time. The second is that the coconut-soy blend's low melting point of 50–53°C is a real consideration in an Indian summer, where a closed delivery van or a metal-roofed godown can get uncomfortably warm. Choosing it purely for finish can trade a cosmetic problem for a softness problem in May.

If you want the physics to do less work, the cheapest honest answer is the container. Frosting is only ever visible through glass; an opaque, matte or tinned container removes the symptom completely without touching the recipe, and in CSI's current range the matte option is not the expensive one. That is not a pitch for buying more wax, and we are aware of it.

Move the gate: photograph, pack and ship on day three

If the finished appearance arrives on day two, every process step that happens before day two is running blind.

This is the operational half of the answer, and for a working brand it is worth more than the wax discussion. Build your schedule around the settling clock rather than the setting clock, and day-two frosting stops being an emergency and becomes a known, inspected property of the product.

Working backwards from a date makes this concrete. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. A candle that needs a three-day appearance gate, a 14-day cure and courier time to a customer in another state should be poured by about mid-October, and today, in the second week of September, you have room to run the six-jar test and still pour the festive batch with the answer in hand. A brand that discovers its frosting problem in the last week of October does not.

One more thing belongs in this section, briefly, because it saves arguments: if a customer does raise it, describe the bloom as a natural characteristic of soy wax, say plainly that it does not affect burn or scent, and include a small care note in the parcel. Against all of that, put the cost of the reaction most makers have on the third morning: remelting the tray. IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING
Move your inspection and your product photography to day three and leave the recipe exactly as it is for one month. A day-two frosting complaint is almost always a day-zero memory being compared with a day-three reality, and simply looking at the real product for a few batches tends to move the decision towards the container and the cooling and away from a more expensive wax. It costs nothing, and it is the change we would want a customer to make before buying anything else from us.

Why does my soy candle frost two days after pouring rather than straight away?
Because setting and settling run on different clocks. The wax solidifies in minutes into a fine, disordered crystal form, then spends the next 24–72 hours at room temperature reorganising towards its stable packing. The new crystal faces at the glass scatter light, which reads as white. Nothing changes on the second night except that the slower process finishes.
Does frosting mean my soy wax is poor quality or contaminated?
No. It is a characteristic of soy wax as a vegetable fat, and it appears in good wax and poor wax alike. CSI's pages describe low frosting on CSI 464 and minimal frosting on CSI 468, and we would rather say plainly that no soy wax page promises none than let you buy a grade expecting that. Burn, melt pool and scent throw are unaffected.
Can I remelt the batch to get rid of the frosting?
You can, and it will come back on the second day unless you change the cooling. Remelting 40 jars of the recipe on this page costs ₹6,805.92 in wax, oil and wicks plus a working day. Change one pour-day variable instead — the first two hours of cooling is the highest-value one — and prove it in six jars for ₹1,020.89.
Will a different soy wax stop the frosting completely?
It can reduce how visible it is; it cannot remove the behaviour. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468's page describes an ultra-smooth finish with minimal frosting, but it costs ₹28.52 more per 200 g jar — ₹2,852.00 across 100 candles — and it pours in a 58–60°C window against the 80–90°C range CSI 464's page gives, so you are also re-learning the process. Does dye make soy candles frost more?
It does not change the wax, but it changes what you can see. The bloom is white, so on a deep colour it is obvious and on cream it is nearly invisible. Halving the dye, or moving to a matte container at ₹70.80 each, removes the complaint without touching the recipe. A candle that frosts invisibly is still frosting, and that is fine.
How long should I wait before deciding a batch is acceptable?
Give the appearance three days and the scent 14 days. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. Photographing, labelling and packing on pour night means judging an intermediate state, which is how a finish problem reaches a customer before it reaches you.
