Why Are There Wet Spots in My Soy Candle Jar?

Does a wet spot mean my wax or my jar is faulty? Usually neither. It is the most common cosmetic result of soy contracting in glass. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 are described on their pages as having excellent glass adhesion, which reduces it. No container soy eliminates it in every room.
Which single cause is most often the real one? Temperature — a cold jar at the pour, or a temperature swing afterwards. In India the second is the quiet one: a jar poured in a 30°C room, boxed, and then carried in a delivery van that reaches 45°C and back into an AC showroom has cycled three times before the customer sees it.
Can I still sell a candle with wet spots? It burns exactly the same. Whether you sell it is a brand decision, not a safety one. At the series unit a 200 g candle carries ₹257.48 of materials, so six rejects out of 24 is ₹1,544.86 written off for something most buyers never notice on matte glass.
What a wet spot actually is — and why the name misleads everyone
Pour molten soy into a glass jar and, for a few minutes, the wax behaves like a liquid that wants to touch everything. It runs into the curve at the base, climbs the wall, fills every flaw in the glass and sits in complete contact with the container. Then it starts to solidify. Soy is not a glassy wax that simply thickens; it crystallises, and crystallising wax occupies less space than molten wax. The plug pulls in on itself from every direction at once.
Two forces are now in competition. The first is adhesion — how strongly the setting wax sticks to the glass. The second is cohesion — how strongly the shrinking plug pulls towards its own centre. Everywhere adhesion wins, the wax stays welded to the wall. Everywhere cohesion wins, the wax peels off and leaves a void. That void is your wet spot. It is normally a fraction of a millimetre deep, it contains air, and it is sitting between the glass and the wax where neither you nor your customer can reach it.
The damp appearance is an optical effect. When wax touches glass, light crossing the wall passes on into the wax and you see wax colour. Where there is an air gap, light meets a glass-to-air boundary instead and a large part of it bounces straight back at you. The patch therefore looks darker, glassier and, to most eyes, wet. Tilt the jar and the patch brightens and dims as the angle changes, which no stain and no genuine moisture would do.
This is why the same candle can look clean in the morning and spotted by evening. Warm the glass and the wax softens just enough to re-wet part of the wall; cool it and the plug contracts again. Wet spots are not a permanent defect written into the candle at the moment of pouring. They are a running record of every temperature the candle has been through since.

The order matters because the cheapest causes to rule out sit at the top. Work down it and stop at the first one your jars agree with.

Notice how many of these are about heat moving rather than about materials. That is the honest summary of the whole subject: wet spots are a thermal story with a cosmetic ending. The wax and the jar set the difficulty level; the temperatures you pour at, cool at, store at and ship at decide the result.
Read the pattern: where the spots sit and when they appeared
Two facts do most of the diagnostic work. The first is geography — whereabouts on the wall the patches sit. The second is chronology — what day they turned up. Record both for six jars from the batch before you change anything. Use a phone photograph in daylight, on a white background, with the jar turned so the wick sits at the back; the patches photograph badly under warm indoor light and you will otherwise argue with yourself about whether they are growing.

The last row deserves a sentence of its own because it generates a surprising number of customer complaints. A candle that has been lit re-melts the wax near the wall, and when that wax sets again it contracts again — often into patterns that did not exist when the candle left you. Nothing has gone wrong. If you sell in clear glass, a line on your care card explaining it in one sentence will save you more messages than any process change.
How much of it is the wax, and how much is the jar
Glass adhesion is a property wax manufacturers formulate for, and CSI's container grades say so on their pages. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is described as offering excellent glass adhesion with a creamy appearance and reduced frosting. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is described as formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states that it provides excellent adhesion to glass and other container surfaces, producing smooth tops and minimal frosting or wet spots when used correctly. That last phrase — when used correctly — is doing real work, and it is the honest position: a container grade lowers the difficulty, it does not remove the physics.
The grade that will definitely give you wet spots in glass is one designed to leave a mould. Soy Pillar Wax is sold for pillars, moulds and designer candles, and easy release is a feature there. Put it in a jar and it does exactly what it was made to do. If someone has recommended it to you for containers because it is ₹600.00 per kg and holds shape, that advice is the cause of your problem.

Now the jar. Two jars can hold the same wax, poured by the same person on the same afternoon, and only one of them will show a spot — because showing is the operative word. Clear glass displays every millimetre of the wall. Matte, frosted, coloured, ceramic and tin containers scatter or block the light before it reaches the wax, so the same air gap is invisible. This is not a trick; it is the most cost-effective answer available to a small Indian brand, and CSI would rather say so than sell you a wax you do not need.

Read the first two rows again. The jar that hides wet spots completely is ₹23.60 cheaper per unit than the one that displays them. For a maker who is losing candles to a cosmetic fault, the cheapest intervention on this entire page is a change of container, and it improves the margin at the same time. That is an uncomfortable thing for a wax supplier to write, and it is true.
The Indian variables: monsoon, AC studios, courier vans and a north-Indian winter
A candle poured in Mumbai in July, stored on a shelf in a room without AC, packed into a courier bag, carried in a van that parks in the sun, delivered to an air-conditioned flat and opened three days later has been through more thermal cycles than most Western container candles see in a year. Each cycle is an opportunity for the plug to break another patch of contact. This is the single most under-diagnosed cause on the list, because the maker sees clean jars leave the studio and the customer sees spotted jars arrive.

There is a scheduling consequence worth planning around. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and today is 11 September 2026. A soy container candle wants a 14–21 day cure before it is judged, so festive stock should be poured by about mid-October to leave room for cure, packing and dispatch. October in most of India is the descent from monsoon into dry, settled weather — good pouring conditions. If you are pouring clear glass for a Diwali or wedding gifting order, that timing is on your side; the risk is not the pour but the week the boxes sit in a warehouse.
Diagnose your own batch in twenty minutes
Cost of the whole exercise, if you already own the materials: nothing. If you are pouring fresh test jars, the series unit is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, which with CSI 464 and Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing plus one Eco Candle Wicks C1 comes to ₹186.68 a candle before the jar, or ₹257.48 with a White Matte Glass Jar. A twelve-jar comparison is therefore about ₹3,089.71 of materials, most of which you will sell anyway.
What to do with the batch in front of you — including doing nothing
A wet spot changes no part of how a candle performs. The gap sits outside the wax, not inside the burn path. It does not alter the wick, the melt pool, the fragrance load, the cure or the hot throw. It does not make the jar more likely to crack, and it does not let anything into the wax. Everything you are weighing is appearance and customer expectation.
So rank your options by cost. First, re-check under the light your customer will actually see — many patches that are obvious under a studio tube light disappear on a shelf. Second, warm the jar gently: a candle left in a 32°C room for a few hours often re-wets part of the wall on its own, which is why summer batches self-correct and winter batches do not. Third, use the batch for a matte or tin line if you have one. Fourth, sell it with an honest care-card line. Only then consider remelting, which costs you a fresh wick and sticker and gains you nothing if the room conditions have not changed.

Read the fourth row as the practical conclusion of the whole page. A maker who moves a clear-glass line to matte removes the visible fault and lowers the material cost by ₹23.60 a candle at the same time; across a 24-jar batch that is ₹566.40. There are good reasons to stay in clear glass — a brand built on seeing the wax, a layered or embedded design, a customer who asked for it — and if that is you, the process work in the earlier sections is where your effort belongs. But nobody should spend a month chasing a cosmetic effect in a jar they could simply stop using.
One last piece of arithmetic, and it is illustrative rather than measured, because no CSI jar page publishes an internal diameter. Take a jar roughly 6.5 cm across inside, filled to about 6 cm deep. The wax touches roughly 122.5 cm² of side wall. A wet-spot patch 2 cm by 3 cm is 6 cm² — about 4.9% of the contact area. Three such patches, which would look like a badly spotted jar to most people, still leave over 85% of the wall bonded. That is the gap between how a wet spot looks and what it is.
