Why Is My Soy Candle Surface Rough After Cooling?

What pouring temperature stops a rough top? Use the grade's own figure, not a general rule. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives a pour of 75–80°C; CSI 464's page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring; CSI 468 pours at 58–60°C. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354.00.
Can I fix a rough top after the candle has set? Often, yes. A heat gun reflows the top few millimetres and fixes grain, ripples and shallow dimples; a ₹11.98 top-up pour of 20 g fixes dished centres; only lumps that run through the body need a full remelt, at about ₹8.90 a jar in new wicks and wax loss.
Does a rough top affect the burn or the scent? No. The first melt pool remakes the surface entirely, so texture is cosmetic. It matters commercially rather than functionally — it is the first thing a customer sees when the lid comes off, which is why an even, faint grain in a dark jar is usually worth shipping and a lumpy top is not.
Six rough tops, and what each texture is telling you
The top of a container candle is the only surface of the wax that touches nothing but air. The sides are held by glass, the base is held by glass, and both of those conduct heat away steadily and evenly. The top radiates and convects into a room you only half control, and it is also the last part to solidify. Whatever the room was doing in the twenty minutes after the pour is written into that surface permanently.
That is why “rough” is not one defect. Six distinct textures turn up on soy tops, and a maker who can name the texture has already narrowed the cause to one or two candidates.

Note what is not on that list. Frosting is a white crystalline bloom that can appear on a perfectly smooth top, and a sunken hollow around the wick that goes deep is a sinkhole rather than a texture. If the mark is white rather than rough, or if the cavity has depth rather than shape, this is not the page you need — but the fingertip settles it in a second. Roughness you can feel; frosting you can only see.
Why the top records the cooling and the sides do not
Pour 200 g of soy at 75–80°C into a jar in a 30°C room and you have created a temperature gap of 45 to 50 degrees. That gap is the engine for everything that follows. Heat leaves in three directions: sideways into the glass and out through it, downwards into the glass base and whatever the jar is standing on, and upwards off the open surface into the air. The first two are steady and predictable, because glass is always glass. The third depends on air temperature, air movement and how much of the room is between the candle and a cold wall.
As the wax cools it passes through a range where it is neither liquid nor solid — thick, cloudy, still moving but no longer pouring. In that window the surface forms a thin skin. If heat is leaving the top slowly, the skin forms late and thin, the wax underneath is still able to move, and the surface settles level and glossy. If heat is leaving fast, the skin forms early and thick while the body underneath is still shrinking — and a rigid skin over a shrinking body gives you grain, ripples, rings and a dished or domed top. The same physics, at a different rate, produces a completely different surface.
The diagram above puts a number on the gap. Working from the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page, which gives a pour range of 75–80°C, a Nagpur workshop at 34°C is asking the top to shed 41 degrees, while an air-conditioned studio at 18°C is asking it to shed 57. That is a forty per cent larger gap for the same wax, the same jar and the same recipe — and the air-conditioned room usually has moving air as well. Indian makers who move from a summer bench to a winter one, or from a balcony to an air-conditioned room, often change nothing else and cannot understand why the tops changed.
Different grades sit in different places on that scale, and it is worth knowing where yours is before you blame the room. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 has a page melting point of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C, so in the same 30°C room its gap is under 30 degrees — roughly half that of a 75°C soy pour. That is part of why its page can describe an ultra-smooth finish. It also costs ₹10.20 more per 200 g than the Chunks. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, and Eco Soy CSI 400's page asks for fragrance at 85°C and a direct pour.
The four things that rough a top, in the order they are usually to blame
1 · The fan
A ceiling fan on low, three metres above a tray of freshly poured jars, is the single most effective way to ruin a soy top. It does not lower the room temperature at all — the thermometer on the wall reads exactly the same — but it replaces the warm, still layer of air sitting on each candle with fresh room air, over and over. The surface loses heat far faster than the body, a skin forms in minutes, and the body shrinks underneath it. You get grain, ripples and sometimes a dished centre. The fingerprint is that every jar on the tray is affected and the ones directly under the blade are worst.
This one is free to fix and the fix is not subtle: switch the fan off for the first two hours, or move the tray out of the airflow entirely. In a Chennai or Ahmedabad workroom in May, where working without a fan is genuinely unpleasant, pour into a corner, put the tray inside an open cardboard carton, and keep the fan on yourself rather than on the wax.
2 · A pour that was already setting
Lumps come from wax that had begun to solidify in the pitcher. Soy does not go from clear liquid to solid in one step: it clouds first, and once it has clouded, the crystals it forms will not re-melt in the jar. Pour at that stage and you are pouring a slurry. Pitchers with a large surface area lose heat quickly: if you are pouring twelve jars from one 600 ml pitcher, the twelfth is several degrees cooler than the first, which is why the last jars on a tray are so often the lumpy ones.
3 · Cold glass and colder counters
Glass that has been sitting in an air-conditioned storeroom, or on a granite or marble counter overnight, pulls heat out of the wax at the wall and the base before the top has settled. The candle sets from the outside inwards, and the last wax to freeze — in the centre, at the top — ends up domed, dished or ringed. Indian kitchens and workrooms are full of stone slabs, and a stone slab is a heat sink. Stand the tray on a folded towel, a wooden board or a sheet of thick cardboard and the base cools at something closer to the rate of the top.
4 · Moving the tray
The skin that forms in the first twenty minutes is fragile, and a wax that is still fluid underneath will slosh if you carry it. Ripples that run in one direction across the top, rather than radiating from the wick, are almost always a carried tray. Pour where the candles will cool. If you must move them, move them within the first ninety seconds, while the whole thing is still liquid, or after several hours when it is fully solid.

Prove it in one tray: the six-jar cooling test
This is general test practice rather than a CSI protocol, and it works with any soy container wax. The entire point is that the wax, the oil, the load, the wick and the jars are identical — the only thing that changes is where the jars cool. Six candles in Chunks with Rajnigandha at 8% and C1 wicks are ₹1,182.36 in materials before jars, which is less than three per cent of a ₹10,714.40 order.
Reflow, top-up or remelt: what each one actually fixes
A heat gun melts the top few millimetres and lets them set again. That is perfect for grain, ripples and shallow dimples, because those faults live entirely in the surface layer. It does nothing for lumps that go all the way down, and it does nothing for a candle whose fragrance seized in a cold pitcher. CSI's Hot Air Gun page describes a 5–6 cm working distance at about 45 degrees, states that it reaches roughly 200°C within seconds and cannot be adjusted, and it is priced at ₹531.00 — with one unit listed in stock as this is written, so check before you plan a batch around it. A hair dryer on its hottest setting does the same job more slowly on a thin skin, and most makers already own one.
The important discipline with any reflow is to stop early. You want a thin film that re-levels itself, not a pool deep enough to flood the wick base or to disturb the wax below. Keep the gun moving in slow circles, work from the rim inwards, stop the moment the surface goes glossy edge to edge, and then let the candle set in still air with the fan off — because reflowing under a fan simply re-creates the grain you just removed.

There is one more option that belongs here for honesty's sake: sell it. A faintly grainy matte top on a 200 g soy candle in a dark jar is invisible to most buyers and disappears entirely after the first burn, because the first melt pool remakes the surface. If the texture is even, the wick is centred and the rim is clean, a reflow may be effort spent on something only you will ever notice. Save the repairs for lumps, rings and dished centres, which photograph badly and read as carelessness.
The Indian cooling year: what each season does to your tops
Soy tops are seasonal in India in a way they are not in a temperate country with central heating. A single workshop can swing from a still 34°C afternoon in May to a 10°C Delhi night in January, and the same 75–80°C pour behaves like two different waxes across that range. Add air conditioning in the summer months and fans nine months of the year and the cooling environment is genuinely the most variable thing on the bench.

The monsoon row is not a joke. Makers in Mumbai and Kochi routinely report their best-looking tops in July and August, and then assume something has gone wrong with their wax in December. Nothing has. A still, humid, 28°C room is close to an ideal cooling environment for soy: small gap, no air movement, slow even heat loss. If your July candles were flawless and your January ones are grainy, you have a room problem with a calendar, not a supply problem.
What rough tops cost on a 40-jar wedding order
Price the order honestly. Set ₹885.00 of tools against ₹355.80 in remelt materials and a lost day, and the arithmetic is not close. But the honest headline is smaller than either figure: the most common cause on this page costs nothing at all to fix, because it is a switch on the wall. A maker who buys a thermometer, a jug and a heavier wax, and then keeps the fan on, has spent ₹885.00 and changed nothing.
One cost that does not appear in any table is the one worth protecting. Rough tops are the fault most likely to be photographed and sent back to you, because they are the first thing a buyer sees when the lid comes off. A candle that smells right and burns right still loses the sale if the top looks like it was made carelessly. That is a good reason to run the six-jar test in September rather than in the last week of October, when a ₹355.80 remelt also costs you the delivery date.
