Quick answers — read this first
Why is my soy wax pulling away from the jar? Because the wax contracted as it cooled and the bond to the glass gave way before the contraction stopped. The usual triggers, in order: a cold jar, fast cooling (fan, air conditioner, cold floor), residue on the glass, a temperature swing after the candle set, and, least often, the wrong wax for a container — Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to release from moulds, which is the opposite of what a jar needs.

Is wax pulling away from the jar the same as wet spots? They are the same physical thing at different scales: wax that has released from the glass, leaving air behind. Small scattered patches are usually called wet spots; a continuous gap down a wall or all round the base is called pull-away. Neither is water, and neither affects how the candle burns.

Does pull-away mean the candle is unsafe or the wax is bad? No. It is cosmetic in a container candle. The wax still burns, the scent is unaffected and the jar is not weakened. It matters commercially, not technically — which is why the honest answer is often to sell the candle rather than re-pour ₹8,201.00 of materials.

Will pull-away fix itself? Sometimes, and this surprises people. Warming a candle — an afternoon at 35°C in an Indian summer, or simply burning it — softens the wax at the wall and it can re-wet the glass, closing the gap. It can also come back on the next cool night. A gap that appears and disappears with the weather is confirmation that it is contraction, not contamination.
The short answer
It is an adhesion failure, not a wax defect: soy contracts as it sets, and the bond to glass either survives the contraction or it does not. Where the gap is names the cause: one side only means an uneven chill, all round the base means a cold surface under the jar, scattered patches mean residue, and a gap that appears on day three means a temperature swing after the candle had already set.
Decide commercially, not emotionally: a finished jar carries ₹258.42 of materials and a fifty-jar tray ₹12,921.00. Pull-away is cosmetic; frosted or matte glass hides it completely, and clear glass shows every millimetre of it.

The mechanism behind every cause on this page. Heat leaves a container candle mainly through the glass, so a shell sets against the wall while the core is still liquid; when the core finally contracts it pulls that shell inwards, and the lost volume has to show up somewhere — as a dip in the surface, as a gap at the wall, or as a void inside. Straight answer
Why has the wax pulled away from the glass in my soy candle?
Soy occupies less space as a solid than as a liquid. Every container candle therefore has to give up volume between the pour and the moment it is fully set, and that lost volume shows up in exactly three places: a dip in the surface, a void inside, or a gap between the wax and the glass. Which one you get is decided by how the candle cooled. A container candle loses almost all of its heat sideways through the glass, so a shell sets against the wall first while the centre is still liquid; when the centre finally contracts, it pulls that shell inwards, and wherever the bond to the glass is weakest, the wax lets go. That is why the position of the gap is diagnostic. One side only means one side was colder — a wall, a window, an air conditioner. A ring all round the base means the jar stood on something cold: a granite counter, a steel table, a mosaic floor. Scattered patches mean something was on the glass — dust, packing residue, a fingerprint — because wax cannot bond to what it cannot touch. A continuous gap down every wall means the whole jar was cold when you poured, or the room was. And a gap that was not there on day one but is there on day three means a temperature swing after setting: the candle went into a courier van at 40°C and came back to 26°C, or the studio air conditioner ran overnight. The last cause is the wax itself, and it is the rarest: Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to release cleanly from moulds, which is precisely the property a jar does not want. None of this makes the candle unsafe or weaker-smelling — it is cosmetic. The commercial question is whether your jar shows it. A clear jar at ₹94.40 shows every millimetre; a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 hides almost all of it. Before you re-pour ₹8,201.00 of wax, oil and wicks across fifty jars, work out whether you have a wax problem or a photography problem.
One line: Soy gives up volume as it sets; where it takes that volume from — the top, the wall or the middle — is decided by how the jar cooled, not by the quality of the wax.

What pull-away is — and the three things it gets confused with

Nothing has gone into the jar. Something has come out of contact with it.

Pull-away is the wax releasing from the glass. In the gap is air. Because air and wax bend light differently, the released area reads as a darker, wetter-looking patch or a bright silver line, depending on how the light falls — which is why makers describe the same fault in completely different words. Put a finger on the outside of the glass and you can often feel nothing at all; slide a torch behind the jar and the gap lights up like a map.

Three things get called pull-away that are not quite it. Wet spots are the same phenomenon at a smaller scale — scattered patches rather than a continuous release — and the live guide Why Does My Candle Have Wet Spots? covers them in their own right. Frosting is white crystal growth on the surface of the wax itself and looks powdery rather than glassy; the live guide Why Soy Candles Frost has the mechanism. A sinkhole is a void under the top surface, not at the wall, and it is caused by the same contraction taking its volume from a different place.

The practical distinction that matters: pull-away is a bond problem, frosting is a crystal problem, and a sinkhole is a volume problem. You can have all three in one jar and each needs a different answer, which is why makers who change four things at once never find out what was wrong.

The maker sends the batch back to the supplier as defective wax. It is an understandable reaction to a shelf of jars with silvery bands down them, but pull-away almost never travels with the wax. The test is simple and free: pour two jars from the same melt, one into glass straight off a shelf in an air-conditioned room and one into glass warmed on a tray, then cool both in the same still place. If the warmed jar comes out clean, the wax was never the variable. Run that test before you write the email.

The mechanism: contraction against a bond

Two forces, one loser. The wax is always trying to get smaller and the glass never is.

Liquid soy poured at the temperature its page asks for — 75–80°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 58–60°C for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, and the 80–90°C working range the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives for melting and pouring — wets the glass completely. Every microscopic irregularity in the surface is filled. That is the bond: not glue, but contact, held by the liquid's ability to flow into everything it touches.

Then it cools. Soy crystallises, the crystals pack more tightly than the liquid did, and the solid occupies less volume than the liquid it came from. The jar does not shrink with it — glass barely moves over this temperature range. So the wax has to find that volume somewhere. Do the arithmetic once and the whole page makes sense.

THE CONTRACTION BUDGET
Take a 200 g fill in a jar with an 80 mm inside diameter. The surface area is 50.3 cm². Suppose, purely as an illustration, that the fill contracts by 5% in volume as it sets — the real figure varies by grade and is not published for any of CSI's waxes. If all of that came out of the top, the surface would drop by roughly 5% of the fill depth: about 2.5 mm on a 50 mm deep fill. If instead all of it came out of the wall, a candle 50 mm deep and 80 mm across would need a gap of roughly 0.5 mm all the way round. Half a millimetre. That is how little movement it takes to produce a band you can see across a room — and why chasing a perfectly bonded jar is a losing game.

The second half of the mechanism is where the heat goes. A container candle is a hot cylinder inside a thin, conductive wall, sitting on a surface. Heat leaves sideways and downwards far faster than it leaves upwards through still air. So the wax against the glass reaches its setting point first and forms a shell, while the core stays liquid and keeps contracting for another hour or more. When the core finally sets, it pulls that shell inwards. If the shell's grip on the glass is stronger than the pull, the shell stays and the core takes the volume out of the top as a dip. If the grip is weaker — because the glass was cold, dirty, or the shell formed too quickly and too thick — the shell comes away and you get a gap.

Everything that causes pull-away is therefore one of two things: something that made the shell form too fast, or something that made the grip too weak. That is a genuinely useful simplification, because it means you never have to guess at more than two questions when you are standing in front of a failed jar.

The CSI principle

Do not ask what is wrong with the wax. Ask where the gap is and when it turned up.

This is the table to keep on the bench. Two observations — where the gap sits and when it appeared — narrow six causes down to one or two almost every time. Note the jar, the room temperature and the surface you cooled on at the same time, because the answer is usually in those three lines rather than in the wax.

Priced above: nothing in this table costs money. Warming jars, moving a cooling tray off a stone counter, wiping glass and rotating a jar are all free. The paid options — a different grade at ₹28.52 more a candle for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, or a matte jar at ₹70.80 instead of a clear one at ₹94.40 — come after the free ones have been tried.
The fan was the fix that caused the problem. Makers in Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata pour in July, get impatient with a tray that is still soft after two hours in a humid 32°C room, and put a pedestal fan on it. The surface skins, the wall shell sets in minutes, and by morning there is a silver band down every jar. Slow cooling is not a luxury in Indian conditions — it is the one thing standing between a warm room and a shell that forms before the core has finished moving. If you must speed a tray up, move it to a cooler still room rather than putting air across it.

The six causes, ranked by how often they are the answer

Five of these are about temperature and cleanliness. One is about the wax, and it is last for a reason.

1 · Cold glass

By a distance the most common. Wax at 75–80°C meeting glass at 22°C sets against that surface almost on contact, forming a thick shell before the core has begun to move. The shell is then rigid, and rigid things do not stretch when the core pulls on them — they detach. This is why the same wax, the same oil and the same method produce clean jars in a Chennai workshop in May and banded jars in a Shimla or Pune winter, or in any air-conditioned room anywhere in India in any month.

It is also why the fix is free. Warming the jars — a tray in the sun for twenty minutes, a low oven, or simply standing them on the melter lid while the wax finishes — narrows the gap between the wax temperature and the glass temperature, and a narrower gap means a thinner, more compliant shell.

2 · Fast or uneven cooling

A fan, an air-conditioner vent, an open window at night, a draught from a doorway, a tray placed half in sun and half in shade. Anything that takes heat out of one part of the jar faster than another builds a shell unevenly, and the gap appears exactly where the cooling was fastest. This is the cause that produces one-sided gaps, and it is the one makers most often misdiagnose as bad wax, because the jars from the middle of the tray come out perfect and the ones at the edges do not.

3 · Cold or conductive surfaces underneath

An Indian workshop bench is very often granite, steel or a mosaic floor. All three pull heat out of a jar base far faster than wood or card. The signature is a clean ring of release at the bottom 10–15 mm of the jar with perfect adhesion above it. A folded towel, a sheet of corrugated card or a wooden board under the cooling tray costs nothing and removes this cause entirely.

4 · Residue on the glass

Wax bonds to what it touches. It cannot bond to a fingerprint, a film of packing oil, dust that settled overnight or the fine silica dust that rides in with a carton in summer. The signature is irregular patches rather than continuous bands, often in the shape of a thumb. Two millilitres of Isopropyl Alcohol Spray and a lint-free cloth per jar is ₹1.04 at 1-litre pricing — ₹52.00 across fifty jars, or roughly the cost of half a wick per candle. It is the cheapest insurance in candle making, and the small 150 ml bottle at ₹383.00 works out at ₹5.11 for the same two millilitres, so buy the litre if you pour regularly.

5 · Temperature swings after the candle has set

This is the cause that makes makers think they are going mad, because the candle was flawless when it was packed. Wax expands and contracts with temperature for the rest of its life. A candle that goes from a 26°C studio into a delivery van that reaches 40°C or more, then into an air-conditioned showroom at 22°C, has expanded and contracted twice before anyone has seen it. Each cycle stresses the bond, and eventually part of it lets go. The gap that appears on day four in a shop was created by the journey, not the pour.

6 · The wrong wax for a container

Last, and genuinely uncommon among makers who read product pages. Soy Pillar Wax is sold for pillars, moulds and designer candles precisely because it releases cleanly from a mould — a feature in a mould and a defect in a jar. Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Soy Butter Wax are different products again, with their own uses. The container-formulated grades say so on their pages: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states excellent glass adhesion, low frosting and minimal blooming; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish; and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces that reduces wet spots and pull-away. If you are pouring a mould wax into a jar, no amount of temperature control will save you.

The three-jar test that proves which cause you have

One melt, three jars, one variable changed. Everything else identical, including the impatience.

Three jars at the series unit cost ₹775.26 in wax, oil, wick and glass. That is less than the value of the jars a single bad tray writes off, and it settles the argument in a day.

Pour one melt into three identical jars. Same wax, same fragrance oil, same load, same pour temperature, poured within two minutes of each other so the wax cannot drift. Use a Pen Thermometer and write the actual pour temperature on a label, not the temperature you intended.

Change one thing, and only for one jar. Jar A is your normal method, untouched — the control. Jar B is warmed for twenty minutes before pouring and nothing else changes. Jar C is wiped with Isopropyl Alcohol Spray and dried completely, and nothing else changes. If you change two things, you will have to run the test again.

Cool all three identically and slowly. Same board, same room, same distance from any window or vent, no fan, no air conditioner, undisturbed for at least four hours and ideally overnight. Moving a jar at hour two is itself a variable — the shell is fragile and a knock can release it.

Read at 24 hours, then again at day 3 and day 7. Photograph each jar against the same background with a torch behind it. A gap that is present at 24 hours was made by the pour. A gap that appears between day 3 and day 7 was made by the room. That distinction alone will tell you whether to change your method or your storage.

Interpretation is mechanical. If jar B is clean and A and C are not, you have a cold-glass problem and the fix is free. If jar C is clean, it was residue and the fix costs ₹1.04 a jar. If all three are equally banded, the cause is in the cooling environment or the wax, and you run a second round changing only the cooling surface. If all three are clean and your production jars are not, the difference is somewhere in your batch process — probably pouring twenty jars over twenty minutes while the melt cools from 80°C to 62°C, which is a different fault with the same symptom.

The test is run with three different fragrance oils "to save time". It happens constantly, and it destroys the result: oils differ in how they affect setting and surface behaviour, so you have changed two variables and can conclude nothing. If you genuinely have no time to test properly, do not test at all — just warm your jars and cool them slowly for a month and see whether the problem goes away. That is a slower experiment but it is at least a valid one.

Indian conditions: the van, the vent, the counter and the shop window

A candle made in one climate and sold in another has been asked to survive two.

Most published advice on container adhesion assumes a stable 20–22°C workshop. Very few Indian makers have one. What they have instead is a 34°C room with one air conditioner that runs at night, a granite kitchen counter, a monsoon week where nothing dries, and a courier leg that can put a parcel through a bigger temperature swing than the pour itself. Each of those has a signature.

One honest note about pricing, because a customer raised it in a review on our own store and it is fair: CSI's delivery charges have been called high, and if you are ordering jars and wax separately in small quantities you will feel that. If you pour regularly, ordering wax, jars and consumables in one consignment and asking for bulk pricing on WhatsApp is the sensible answer, and it also means your jars and your wax spend the same journey in the same van — which, on the evidence of this page, is not a trivial detail.

The other Indian-specific point is the monsoon. Humidity does not cause pull-away directly — wax and water do not mix, and the gap is air, not moisture — but a jar that has been sitting in a humid room carries a film that stops the wax wetting the glass properly. That is residue by another name. Wiping and drying jars immediately before pouring, rather than the night before, removes it. Storing jars in a closed carton rather than open on a shelf removes most of it before you start.

Does it matter? An honest commercial answer

The most expensive thing about pull-away is usually the decision to re-pour.

Technically, no. The candle burns the same, the melt pool forms the same, the fragrance is unchanged and the jar is not weakened. Air in a 0.5 mm gap at the wall has no effect on how a wick draws wax. There is no safety consideration in a container candle, and there is no reason to discard a candle that has it.

Commercially, it depends entirely on who is looking and through what. Run the numbers before you decide. A finished jar at the series unit is ₹258.42 including a ₹94.40 clear jar. Writing off ten jars is ₹2,584.20. Re-pouring fifty and reusing the glass is ₹8,201.00 of wax, oil and wicks, plus the fourteen days of cure you were counting on. Against that, a matte or coloured jar costs less than the clear one — ₹70.80 against ₹94.40 — and hides nearly everything.

One more consideration that applies particularly to Indian D2C sellers. Your customer has probably seen a hundred candle photographs on Instagram taken with a ring light on a perfectly poured jar, and a gap looks like a defect against that benchmark. Say it first. A line in the product description — that soy is a natural wax which contracts as it sets, and that small gaps between the wax and the glass are normal and do not affect the burn — turns a complaint into a signal that you know your material. Every maker who does this reports fewer messages, not more.

The maker fixes the wax and keeps the jar. A grade change costs ₹1,426.00 across fifty candles and a fortnight of testing. A jar change costs less than the jar you were already buying and removes the visible problem immediately. Neither is a moral victory, but if the goal is candles that look right on a shelf in October, one of them is available this week and the other is not. Fix the wax for the reasons the wax deserves — throw, finish, ceiling, pour behaviour — and fix the appearance with glass.

Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C and a direct pour; its fragrance ceiling and melting point are not published, and we do not guess at them. Contraction percentages, cooling times, gap widths and the temperature ranges quoted for Indian rooms, vans and shops are illustrative general practice, not CSI measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wax pulling away from the jar dangerous?
No. The gap contains air, the wax burns exactly as it would without it, the melt pool forms normally and the glass is not weakened. It is a cosmetic issue in a container candle. It is worth telling customers this in the listing rather than waiting to be asked.
Why does the gap appear days after the candle was made?
Because wax keeps responding to temperature for its whole life. A candle that goes from a 26°C studio into a van at 40°C and then into an air-conditioned shop at 22°C has expanded and contracted twice, and each cycle stresses the bond to the glass. A gap that was not there at despatch was made by the journey, not by your pour.
Will warming the jars before pouring stop pull-away?
It is the single most effective free change, because it narrows the temperature difference between the wax and the glass and produces a thinner, more compliant shell at the wall. It will not fix residue on the glass, a fan blowing across the tray, or a mould wax in a jar, so run the three-jar test rather than assuming it is a cure-all.
Does soy wax pull away more than paraffin or coconut blends?
Container-formulated soy is sold on the strength of its adhesion — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states excellent adhesion to glass that reduces wet spots and pull-away, and both CSI 464 and CSI 468 state excellent glass adhesion. We do not publish comparative contraction data for CSI's grades and will not invent it. What we can say is that a wax sold for moulds, such as Soy Pillar Wax, is formulated to release, and that is the one clear wax-side cause of pull-away.
Can I fix pull-away in a candle that has already set?
Partly. Gentle warming can soften the wax at the wall so it re-wets the glass and the gap closes, and burning the candle often does the same thing on its own. It may return when the room cools. There is no way to repair the bond permanently without remelting, and because the fault is cosmetic, remelting ₹8,201.00 worth of a fifty-jar tray is rarely the right commercial call.
Is pull-away caused by too much fragrance oil?
Not usually, but an overloaded candle can show a gap alongside a beaded or oily surface, and then the load is the real fault. Check your percentage against the ceiling stated on your wax page — 10% for CSI 464, 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468, not published for Eco Soy CSI 400 — and remember that where an oil page quotes a lower range than the wax, such as the 6–9% on the Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil page, the lower figure governs.
