A Supplier Says Their Soy Wax Is a Direct Replacement for the Wax I Already Use — What Should I Independently Verify Before Believing That Claim?
शेयर करना
What do I check first? The written statements: temperatures, fragrance ceiling, 100% soy or blend, lot numbers, change notices. If your load is above the stated ceiling, the claim fails on paper.
What is the final test? Your recipe, unchanged, poured in both waxes: 4 control and 4 replacement candles, one of each to full life, blind throw, shelf storage.
What does verification cost? ₹1,434.04 in the CSI 464 example — 1.9% of the materials in a 500-candle order. See the kit.
Treat "direct replacement" as five separate claims, and verify each one
A supplier who says their soy wax is a direct replacement for yours is usually saying several things at once: it processes at the same temperatures, it takes the same fragrance load, it burns well on the same wick, it looks the same in the jar, and it will keep doing that delivery after delivery. Some of those can be checked on paper in ten minutes. Some can only be checked by burning candles. None of them is settled by the phrase itself — however honest the supplier, they have never burned your oil, in your jar, on your wick, in your room.
So the answer to "what should I independently verify" is: everything the claim implies about your candle, in the order that costs least first. Ask for the written statements behind the claim. Check them against your recipe. Pour unscented pucks to see the wax on its own. Then run a side-by-side bench against your current wax as the control, with your recipe unchanged. Only a candle that is no worse than your control on every line has verified the claim. The rest of this page turns that into questions, tests, a scoring sheet and a price.
This applies to CSI as much as anyone. To show it, the worked example uses our own Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 as the wax being offered as a replacement. Its product page states fragrance load up to 10%, a melt/pour working range of 80–90°C in its spec table, a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, and describes it as single-pour with glass adhesion and low frosting — the maker's description, not CSI test data. Those are exactly the kind of statements this page teaches you to test. We do not claim CSI 464 is a direct replacement for any wax, and you should not take it as one until your control says so.
What the claim implies, and how each part is checked
Break the claim down before you test it. Each implied sub-claim has a cheapest possible check and a final check, and you can stop early if a cheap check already contradicts it. A sub-claim is VERIFIED when your own test shows no difference that matters, CONTRADICTED when a test shows one, and UNVERIFIED until you have tested it — which is the honest status of every sub-claim on the day you hear it.
| Implied claim | Cheapest check (paper) | Final check (your bench) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same processing | Written melt/add/pour temperatures; for CSI 464 the spec table lists 80–90°C | Pour pucks and test candles at the stated temperatures; note handling differences | UNVERIFIED |
| Same fragrance load | Stated ceiling vs your load — CSI 464's page states up to 10% | Throw and sweating at your exact load, beside control | UNVERIFIED |
| Same wick | None — no paper check exists | Matched burns through full life on your current wick | UNVERIFIED |
| Same appearance | Photos and description ("low frosting", "glass adhesion") are claims | Unscented puck + scented candles stored and photographed beside control | UNVERIFIED |
| Same every delivery | Ask whether lot numbers or change notices are given; CSI publishes neither | Retained sample + first-batch check on every new delivery | UNVERIFIED |
Notice the third row. There is no document that can tell you a wax suits your wick, because wick suitability depends on the jar diameter, the oil, the load and the wax together. A supplier can truthfully say their wax works with a particular wick in their test jar; that is still a different candle from yours. Why an identical-looking wax still needs wick, fragrance and burn testing goes deeper on the wick question, and why waxes with similar melt points can still differ explains why a matching number on a spec sheet is not enough.
Eight questions to ask before a single candle is poured
Send these in writing and keep the replies. You are not trying to catch anyone out; you are collecting the statements you will test, and finding out how much the supplier will put on paper. A supplier who will only repeat "it is a direct replacement" has told you that the whole burden of proof is yours.
| Question | Why you ask | How CSI would answer for CSI 464, honestly |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Replacement for which wax, exactly? | "Replaces soy wax" is not a claim about yours | We make no direct-replacement claim for CSI 464 |
| 2. What melt, add and pour temperatures do you state? | Processing instructions are rung 2 evidence | Spec table: melt/pour working range 80–90°C |
| 3. What maximum fragrance load do you state, and on what basis? | Your load must sit inside it | Up to 10% |
| 4. What wick and jar did you test with? | Shows how far their test is from your candle | We publish no burn tests or wick charts |
| 5. Is the wax 100% soy, or a blend? | Your label claims depend on it | Ask on WhatsApp for the documentation available |
| 6. Do you give lot numbers or certificates per lot? | Traceability for later problems | CSI publishes no lot numbers or CoAs; record your own order date and bag |
| 7. Will you notify me if the product changes? | A silent change voids your approval | No change-notice service is published |
| 8. What shelf life and storage do you state? | Planning stock you cannot use is waste | 60 months in cool, dry storage, per the product page |
The right-hand column is there to show what an honest answer looks like, including the answers that admit a gap. Ours has several gaps: no burn data, no lot numbers, no change notices. That does not disqualify a wax; it tells you which parts of verification you must do yourself. Whether to ask for lot numbers and what to record on every delivery show how to build the traceability a supplier does not provide.
The verification bench: your recipe, unchanged, against your current wax
The bench verifies the claim on its own terms. A direct replacement should need nothing changed: same oil, same load, same wick, same jar, same fill. So nothing is changed. The example candle is a Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap filled to an example 110 g — a 130 ml brim volume holds roughly 112–117 g of wax at an approximate 0.86–0.90 g per ml, so 110 g leaves headspace; confirm your own fill with a weighed pour. At 8% that is 8.8 g of oil and 101.2 g of wax per candle, with Bergamot Amber Fragrance Oil and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 wick in this example.
| Line | Control (current wax) | Claimed replacement | Sub-claim it decides | Verified if… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puck colour, surface, shrinkage | ___ | ___ | Same appearance | No difference you would see on a shelf |
| Pour handling at stated temperatures | ___ | ___ | Same processing | Your team can pour it without new steps |
| Time to full melt pool | ___ min | ___ min | Same wick | Within your set band of control |
| Flame height · mushrooming · soot | ___ | ___ | Same wick | No worse than control — safety |
| Jar-side reading, same point and minute | ___ | ___ | Same wick | No hotter than control — safety |
| Full-life lower third | ___ | ___ | Same wick | No tunnel, no late overheating |
| Hot / cold throw, blind | ___ | ___ | Same load | Same or not distinguishable |
| Shelf candle: sweating, frosting, glass | ___ | ___ | Same appearance + load | Nothing a customer would notice |
The priced verification kit
Grams follow the CSI convention (oil = fill × load). The replacement wax covers 4 candles × 101.2 g plus 2 × 100 g pucks = 604.8 g, or 635.0 g with a 5% loss allowance. The oil covers 8 candles × 8.8 g = 70.4 g, 73.9 g with the allowance. Control wax comes from your current stock. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; wicks & jars verified 10 September 2026.

What believing the claim untested would put at risk
The reason to verify is not suspicion; it is arithmetic. Suppose the claim is believed and the next order — an example 500 candles — is poured straight into the replacement. At the 10 kg wax rate, the 1 kg oil rate, a ₹5.90 wick and the ₹47.20 jar, each 110 g candle carries ₹152.29 of materials, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. 500 candles carry ₹76,147.24. The verification kit is 1.9% of that.
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Material per candle (CSI 464, Bergamot Amber, Thin C1, Yankee jar) | ₹152.29 | 101.2 g wax at ₹0.51/g + 8.8 g oil at ₹5.44/g + wick + jar |
| Materials in 500 candles | ₹76,147.24 | Exposed if the claim fails after pouring |
| Verification kit | ₹1,434.04 | 1.9% of the exposure |
| Wax for 500 candles if verified | 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg · ₹27,907.00 | 52.1 kg with a 3% production allowance |
The decision rule: verified, partly verified, contradicted
Turn the sheet into one of four outcomes. Write them down before the first burn so the result cannot be argued into a better category afterwards.
| Outcome | When | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| VERIFIED for this recipe | All five sub-claims verified; no safety line worse than control | Pilot batch with three pulled candles, then buy production wax |
| PARTLY VERIFIED | Safety fine; one quality line differs (throw, top, glass) | Not a direct replacement. Treat it as a new wax: optimise it in stages or decline |
| NEEDS A DIFFERENT WICK | Current wick tunnels or overfeeds in the replacement | Not a direct replacement. If you still want it, it is a reformulation project |
| CONTRADICTED | Any safety line worse than control | Reject for this recipe; tell the supplier what you found |
If CSI 464 is the replacement on trial and it is verified for your recipe, the first purchase after the pilot is sized to your next order: in this example 52.1 kg rounds to 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg at ₹27,907.00, flat at ₹507.40 a kilo — there is no bulk break on the listed bags. Keep a retained sample from the delivery, and run the first production batch against a control, as the incoming-QC post sets out. If the verdict is anything other than VERIFIED, the honest label for the wax is "a different wax that might work after development" — the post on a cheaper supplier and the supplier scorecard help you decide whether that development is worth it.

Claims arrive in different shapes. Two suppliers with similar samples is the head-to-head version; a supplier who changed the product slightly is the claim nobody made out loud; a stock-out with a big order due is the version with a deadline. The standard test candle makes every claim cheaper to check, and the full approval system shows where verification sits among the other gates. For the cluster's process-tolerance side, two container soy waxes that behave differently is the mechanism post.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We used our own CSI 464 as the example wax on trial because its product page makes statements — single-pour, glass adhesion, low frosting — that are exactly the kind of claim a buyer should test. We publish no burn, throw, frosting, adhesion, lot or change-notice data, and we make no direct-replacement claim for any wax.
Soy-wax prices are CSI live listings re-checked on 1 October 2026; the oil price was pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified on 10 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding and exposure are arithmetic shown to two decimals.
The 110 g fill, the 0.86–0.90 g per ml wax approximation, 8% load, four candles per variant, 100 g pucks, 3–4 hour burns, cure checkpoints, loss allowances and the 500-candle order are labelled examples and working practices. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limits. For documentation, bulk quotes or GST invoicing, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
