Why a favour order is a unit-cost problem, not a scent problem

A retail candle and a favour candle look identical and behave like different businesses. In retail you sell one candle to a self-selected customer who chose that scent, and your margin is what you can persuade one person to pay. In a favour order, the price is fixed before you open your mouth. The client has multiplied their guest count by a number they are comfortable with, and that product is the whole budget. Your job is to fit a candle inside it.

That inversion changes every downstream decision. Fill weight becomes a lever rather than a spec, the vessel becomes the largest controllable line item, and the oil is chosen the way a caterer chooses a menu for three hundred people: not by what is most exciting, but by what the fewest people will refuse at a cost that survives being multiplied by five hundred. A retail candle is bought by someone who already likes that scent family. A favour is issued to everyone in the room — grandparents, children, guests with migraines, guests who are eating.

Format economics: what each favour actually costs to pour

Favours are almost always small, and for good reason: at 200 to 500 units, every extra gram of fill weight is multiplied by the whole order. Below is the full materials cost of each realistic favour format at an 8% fragrance load, using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10kg (₹0.60 a gram) and British Rose at 1kg pricing (₹3.068 a gram), with a 200g retail candle at the bottom for contrast.

Read the tealight line carefully. Big Tealights Empty at ₹1,180 per 100 are ₹11.80 a cup and burn about nine hours, but they ship empty, so you need a wick assembly: the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs at ₹707 gives 100 assembled wicks at ₹7.07 each and leaves most of the 61-metre roll for later. Every oil below is chosen against one test: how many guests out of three hundred will actively dislike it? That rules out a great deal of an interesting catalogue. Heavy oud and bakhoor divide a room. Cinnamon, pumpkin spice and clove read as festive-winter and fight the food. Coffee, chocolate and tobacco compete directly with the catering. Citronella, whatever it actually smells like, is remembered as insect repellent. None are bad oils — they are simply wrong for a product handed to everyone. Per-unit cost below is at 1kg pricing, because at 200 units and up that is what you should be buying. Mogra is the exception: it is stocked as a 100g unit only, so a 500-unit order means twenty units of the same size.

Two things fall out of that table. First, the whole fragrance spread is ₹21.85 per 50g candle from cheapest to dearest — ₹10,925 across 500 units, real money but far less than a vessel upgrade costs. Second, the four cheapest oils are also four of the safest, so you are not trading acceptability for cost here.

Where an Indian wedding floral is the brief, three oils carry cultural weight no imported scent can borrow. Jasmine at ₹3,923/kg is the most versatile and the safest across a mixed guest list. Mogra at ₹642/100g is the most instantly recognisable — the scent of the garlands already in the room, which is either the strongest tie-in available or a duplication, depending on the venue. Rajnigandha at ₹4,460/kg is the heaviest of the three; use it at the lower end of your load in small vessels, because tuberose fills a room faster than its cost per gram suggests.

For a daytime function or an April-to-June wedding, heavy florals and warm woods feel wrong in the heat. Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832/kg is the cheapest oil here at ₹11.33 per 50g favour and reads clean rather than cheap; Cucumber Green Tea at ₹3,328/kg is the genuinely unisex option for a couple who do not want something that reads as feminine. Both are light top notes, so give them the full 14-day cure or they will read weak. At the top of the range, Vanilla Orange Blossom and Neroli smell more expensive than they cost, which is worth ₹13 a unit on a premium 100g favour.

Exact quantity maths for 100, 250 and 500 favours

Work through this before you send a quote. The reference build is a 50g soy candle in a Mini Glass Jar, British Rose at an 8% load — 4g oil, 46g wax. "Need" is what the candles consume; "Buy" is what you actually have to purchase, because you cannot order 4.6kg of wax. The gap between them is the pack-size penalty, worst at low volume.

Notice what does not happen. Going from 100 units to 500 moves materials from ₹74.32 to ₹71.35 — ₹2.97 a unit, about 4%. There is no meaningful bulk discount hiding in a favour order: Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each at 10 and at 1,000, mini jars are ₹21.24 each at 100 and at 500, and British Rose only moves from ₹3.42 to ₹3.07 a gram. The economies of scale here are all on the labour and packing side — one batch, one scent, one vessel, one repeated motion. Do not promise a client a volume discount your own supply chain does not give you.

Wax compatibility and load ceilings

The wax sets your maximum fragrance load, and in a favour order the load is not a place to economise — a small candle has a small melt pool and therefore less surface area to release scent from than a 200g jar. Running a 50g favour at 5% to save ₹4.60 a unit produces five hundred candles that smell of nothing, which is the one outcome a wedding client actually complains about.

All twelve oils work across the CSI soy range. Work to the ceiling printed on the wax you actually buy — 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464 — because there is no single universal number. The timeline, and why you never promise under 14 days of cure

A wedding date does not move. That single fact should govern every commitment you make, because unlike a retail order there is no version of late that is acceptable. The sequence below is the honest one, and it is longer than most clients expect.

That is ten weeks for a bespoke scent and about six for a house-range scent, where cured samples are already on the shelf and you skip straight from approval to production. Anything shorter is not a rush job, it is a decision to ship uncured candles — and uncured soy is the most reliable way to have five hundred people simultaneously conclude your candles have no smell.

Packaging, personalisation, and how to quote a wedding client

Packaging is where a favour stops being a candle and starts being a gift, and it is the line makers most often forget to cost. Budget around ₹20 per unit from CSI packaging materials: a 3-ply corrugated box 4.5 × 3 × 2.5 inch at ₹664 per 50 (₹13.28 each), a sheet of premium tissue paper at ₹650 per 100 (₹6.50), and a candle care sticker at ₹699 per 1,000 (₹0.70). That is ₹20.48, and the sticker is not optional — it is the safety instruction that goes home with a guest who has never burned a container candle.

For personalisation, crinkle paper filler at ₹300 per 500g and craft paper tape at ₹826 per 200 metres colour-match a wedding palette cheaply. Keep personalisation on the outside of the box wherever possible: a printed sleeve can be produced late and applied in an evening, whereas anything printed onto the vessel has to be ordered before the pour and cannot be corrected if a name is misspelt.

Six rules make a wedding quote hold together. Quote per unit, never as a lump sum — a per-unit price survives the guest list changing, which it will. State a minimum order, typically 100 units for a bespoke scent and 50 for a house scent, because below that the pack-size penalty eats the margin. Take a 50% deposit on confirmation, since that is the money that buys the kilogram of oil and the five hundred jars. Charge for samples and credit the fee against the order if it is placed. Lock scent and vessel in writing at sample approval, with a stated cost and delay for later changes. Quote a dispatch date, not the wedding date, and add a 3% breakage allowance so a cracked jar is a planned event rather than a crisis.
