What oud actually is, and what a candle oud is

Oud, also called agarwood, comes from trees of the genus Aquilaria, which grow across South and Southeast Asia including parts of northeast India. Healthy Aquilaria heartwood is pale, light and close to odourless. When the tree is infected by a particular mould, it defends itself by saturating the affected wood with a dark, dense, aromatic resin. That resin-soaked heartwood is oud. It is not harvested from a healthy tree; it is the product of a tree responding to disease, which is why it forms slowly, unpredictably and in a small fraction of trees.

The consequence is economic. Because the resin cannot be reliably farmed, graded and distilled at scale in the way lavender or citrus can, distilled oud has for centuries been among the most expensive raw materials in all of perfumery, traded by the tola and the gram rather than the kilogram. Wild agarwood is also subject to international trade controls, which tightens supply further.

This is why every oud candle you have ever smelled, at any price, from any brand, was made with a fragrance oil composed to evoke oud rather than distilled agarwood. Perfumers build that character from woody, resinous, smoky, leathery and balsamic materials, and they do it extremely well — a good oud composition reads as oud to almost everyone, including people who know the natural material. This is normal, legitimate practice and it is how commercial oud fragrance works throughout the industry, in candles, in room sprays and in a great deal of fine perfumery too.

What it means for you as a maker is simple and freeing. Judge an oud fragrance oil on how it performs and how it smells, not on a provenance story. Do not claim natural agarwood content you cannot evidence, do not repeat a supplier's romance as fact in your own product copy, and do describe the scent honestly — "deep, resinous, smoky oud" is accurate and sells; "distilled from wild Assamese agarwood" is a claim you would have to defend. Everything below is about performance and cost, which are the two things you can actually verify in your own workshop.

The five styles of candle oud

"Oud" on a label tells a customer almost nothing, because the range of things sold as oud is enormous. A clean white oud and a dark bakhoor are further apart from each other than lavender is from rose. Sorting your buying by sub-style is the single most useful thing you can do with this family, and it stops the classic mistake of stocking three oils that all sit in the same corner.

The picks, priced

All prices are CSI live pricing as of August 2026. Fragrance cost per candle is calculated at a 6% load, which is where oud belongs in soy: 12g of oil in a 200g candle and 18g in a 300g candle. Where an oil is also stocked in 15g and 50g, those sizes are noted so you can trial before committing.

Load, cure, colour and throw: the technical half

Oud behaves differently from every other fragrance family in a candle, and all of the differences trace back to one property: the molecules that carry oud character are heavy and low in volatility. They evaporate slowly. In perfumery that is exactly why oud is used as a base note — it is still there hours after the top notes have gone. In a candle it produces four consequences, and if you know all four in advance you will never mis-handle an oud again.

Wax compatibility: which wax for oud

Oud is a forgiving fragrance in wax terms because it does not depend on fragile top notes surviving the pour. It works across the CSI soy range; what changes between waxes is the fragrance ceiling, the finish and how much of the candle's character comes from the wax itself.

Wick with Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) at ₹590 per 100 for narrower jars, Thick (C2) at ₹944 per 100 for wider vessels — and size the wick by jar diameter, not by fragrance. For vessels, oud rewards dark glass twice over: it hides the discolouration and it signals the price. Where oud sells, and at what price

Oud is the most reliable way a small Indian candle brand can justify a premium price. That is not a marketing sentiment, it is a positioning fact: oud is one of the very few fragrance references an Indian customer already understands as expensive before you say anything. You do not have to educate them, you do not have to compete on packaging alone, and you are not asking them to pay ₹999 for a vanilla candle they can mentally price against a supermarket one. The category does the persuading; your job is to pick the right sub-style for the occasion.

Pricing a 200g oud candle. At a 6% load a 200g candle takes 12g of oil and 188g of wax. Using Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999/10kg (₹0.60/g) that is ₹112.80 of wax, plus ₹5.90 for an Eco Wick Thin (C1) and ₹47.20 for an Amber Shiny Glass Jar — a base of ₹165.90 before fragrance. Add the oil and treat materials as 30–35% of retail, which is the workable rule for a small Indian brand once labour, packaging, shipping, gateway fees and breakage are accounted for.

Scale it to 300g and the arithmetic holds: 18g of oil, 282g of wax at ₹169.20, a Thick (C2) Eco Wick at ₹9.44 and a Borosilicate Glass Jar with golden lid at ₹120 gives a base of ₹298.64.
