Candle Business Guides · Woody Buying
Ten woody oils are listed in a 15 g pack, and the cheapest of them costs ₹93.22 — enough to pour one 120 g test jar at 8% with grams to spare. This guide shows which wood to buy for which customer, what the small pack really costs per gram, and the order in which to spend the next ₹1,300.

for a 15 g pack of Sandalwood Fragrance Oil or Woody Oud — the cheapest listed way into the woody family · one 15 g pack pours one 120 g jar at 8% with 5.4 g left over · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which woody fragrance oil should I buy first? Buy by the customer you are selling to, not by the wood. For a familiar, year-round scent, Sandalwood Fragrance Oil (15 gm ₹93.22). For festival and gifting, Woody Oud (15 gm ₹93.22). For a clean, modern, spa-facing candle, Sage and Cedarwood (50 gm ₹354).

What size should I buy? 15 g to decide, 100 g to develop, 500 g to sell, 1 kg to repeat. A 15 g pack pours one 120 g jar; 100 g pours six 200 g candles; 500 g pours thirty-one. Buying 500 g of an untested scent is the most common and most expensive mistake in this family.

Is the small pack bad value? Usually by a little, occasionally by a lot. Gilli Mitti's 15 gm is only 4.2% dearer per gram than its cheapest rung, but Mahogany Shea's 15 gm is 2.24 times its 100 gm rate. Pay the premium anyway on a scent you have not burned — it is cheaper than a wrong kilo.

How do I know an oil is right before I commit? Read the page for a stated candle load, a measured flash point, a vanillin figure and a cure time, then pour and cure your own jar. Four woody pages publish a measured flash point — Vetiver 206°C, Sandalwood 203°C, Sage and Cedarwood 190°C, Palo Santo 93°C — and the rest publish none.
The short answer
Buy three small, not one large: ₹641.50 buys 15 g each of six different woody oils. The same money buys a fifth of a 500 gm pack of one, which teaches you nothing you did not already believe.
Buy the direction, then the oil: sandalwood, oud, dry timber and root-and-earth sell to four different people. Choose the direction from your customer, then let stated load, flash point and price choose the bottle.
Pour every sample at 8%, on the wax you actually use: comparing two oils at different loads or on different waxes proves nothing. Fix everything but the oil, then cure both and burn them on the same day.
The cost of trying one wood — every woody oil listed in a 15 g pack Sandalwood · Woody Oud ₹93.22 for 15 g Saffron Cedarwood ₹103.84 for 15 g Dark Vanilla Oud ₹105.02 for 15 g Palo Santo ₹106.20 for 15 g White Royal Oud ₹130 for 15 g Gilli Mitti ₹140 for 15 g Mahogany Shea · Santal Noir ₹164.02 and ₹166 for 15 g Vetiver ₹187.62 for 15 g
Ten woody oils list a 15 g pack. Every one of them pours a single 120 g test jar at 8% — 9.6 g — with about five grams left for a blotter. Sage and Cedarwood, the retailer-inspired teakwood, Mint Sandalwood and the brand-inspired sandal have no 15 g pack; their entry sizes are 50 gm ₹354, 50g ₹440, 50g ₹299 and 50g ₹442.
Straight answer
Which woody fragrance oil should I buy for candle making, and in what size?
Buy three 15 g packs from three different woody directions rather than one big bottle of the wood you already like. The three that answer the most questions for the least money are Sandalwood Fragrance Oil at ₹93.22 — creamy, familiar in India, and the family's best-documented page with a measured "Flashpoint 203°C", "Vanillin content 0%" and up to 10% in soy; Woody Oud at ₹93.22 — dark, resinous and gifting-facing, stated at "6-10%" in soy with a 48–72 hour cure; and Saffron Cedarwood at ₹103.84 — a dry, spiced wood with a published pyramid of "Top: Citrus, Cardamom", "Middle: Palo Santo, Saffron, Violet", "Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber". That is ₹290.28 of oil and three genuinely different candles. If your shelf needs a fourth direction, add Palo Santo at ₹106.20 for resin and incense or Gilli Mitti at ₹140 for wet earth. Pour each at 8% into a 120 g jar on the wax you sell — CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — cure them together, and only then buy grams. Two oils worth knowing about but not starting with: Mahogany Shea, whose 15 g costs 2.24 times its 100 gm rate, and Vetiver, whose 15 g costs 2.16 times its 500 gm rate.
One line: spend ₹290.28 on three 15 g woods from three directions, pour them at 8% in the same wax and jar, and let a cured burn decide which one deserves 500 grams.
Starting the woody family? Sandalwood 15 gm ₹93.22, Woody Oud 15 gm ₹93.22 and Saffron Cedarwood 15 gm ₹103.84 — three directions, ₹290.28, three 120 g test jars poured at 8% with grams left over for blotters.

Choose the direction before the bottle

Nobody walks into a shop wanting "a woody candle". They want the one that smells like a temple, or a hotel lift, or the first rain.

The commercial mistake in this family is treating twenty-one listings as a single choice with twenty-one options. They are not. They are four choices with five or six options each, and the four appeal to different people, sell in different months and support different prices. Work out which of the four your customer is, and the bottle almost chooses itself.

Four woody directions and who buys each
Start from the customer, not the ingredient
If your customer wants… The direction Buy this first Entry pack Also consider
Something familiar, calming, gift-safe all year Sandalwood Sandalwood Fragrance Oil 15 gm ₹93.22 Mint Sandalwood 50g ₹299 · Santal Noir 15g ₹166
Rich, festive, obviously expensive Oud and bakhoor Woody Oud 15 gm ₹93.22 Dark Vanilla Oud 15 gm ₹105.02 · White Royal Oud 15gm ₹130
Clean, dry, masculine, hotel-like Dry timber Sage and Cedarwood 50 gm ₹354 Saffron Cedarwood 15 gm ₹103.84 · retailer-inspired teakwood 50g ₹440
Grounding, meditative, wellness-shelf Root, resin and earth Palo Santo 15 gm ₹106.20 Vetiver 15 gm ₹187.62 · Gilli Mitti 15 gm ₹140

Two of those directions overlap less than makers expect. A customer who loves sandalwood will usually also enjoy a soft oud, because both are creamy and warm at the base. A customer who wants cedar and teak often finds traditional bakhoor smoke too heavy for a living room. And the wellness end — vetiver, palo santo, petrichor — is bought for how it makes a room feel rather than what it smells of, which is why those three sell well alongside meditation and Ayurvedic products and poorly alongside festive gifting sets.

Buy for the room, not the bottle
A woody oil on a blotter and the same oil after a fortnight in cured soy are two different experiences, and the gap is larger in this family than in citrus or fruit because wood sits low in a composition and takes time to show. Smell the sample, but do not decide from it. Decide from a jar you burned for two hours in a closed room. Why the wait matters is set out in how cure time changes the smell of different fragrance families.

Ten woody oils, priced per jar

These are the woody oils you can buy in a 15 g pack — the ten that let you try before you commit. The table gives the stated profile in the page's own words, the entry price, the cheapest listed gram among packs in stock, and what the oil costs inside a 120 g jar at 8% (9.6 g of oil, 110.4 g of wax), because a 120 g jar is the sensible size to test in and a common size to sell in.

Santal Noir "Top Notes: Soft Spice, Subtle Green Accord" · "Heart Notes: Creamy Sandalwood, Light Cedar" · "Base Notes: Warm Amber, Musk, Dry Woods" ₹166 ₹9.1200 ₹87.55
Worked out above: a 120 g jar at 8% is 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil, so oil per jar = cheapest in-stock price per gram × 9.6. Woody Oud ₹4.5312 × 9.6 = ₹43.50 · Sandalwood ₹5.0268 × 9.6 = ₹48.26 · Santal Noir ₹9.1200 × 9.6 = ₹87.55. Every other row is the same multiplication. Cheapest-gram rungs: Woody Oud, Sandalwood and Mahogany Shea from 100 gm upward; Saffron Cedarwood and Vetiver at 500 gm; Dark Vanilla Oud at 500 gm; Palo Santo from 50 gm upward; White Royal Oud at 100gm; Gilli Mitti from 50 gm upward; Santal Noir at 1kg.

Notice how little separates the first six rows once the oil is inside a jar: ₹43.50 to ₹57.77, a spread of ₹14.27. At that scale the choice between Woody Oud and Palo Santo is not a cost decision at all — it is a decision about which candle your customer picks up. The four rows above ₹77 are where cost starts to shape the product, and those are the ones to sell in a smaller jar or at a higher price rather than at a thinner load.

The mistake: buying the cheapest gram on day one. The cheapest gram of Mahogany Shea is in the 100 gm pack at ₹488.52 — good value, and a terrible first purchase if you have never smelled it, because 100 g is six 200 g candles of a wood you have not tested. The right sequence is to pay the sampling premium once, then never pay it again: ₹164.02 for 15 g, and if it passes, ₹488.52 for 100 g at ₹4.8852 a gram. The premium on that single small pack is about ₹90 — roughly the cost of one wasted candle.

What the small pack really costs

Every small pack carries a premium. The only question worth asking is whether it is four per cent or a hundred and twenty-four.

Small packs cost more per gram almost everywhere, which is normal and not a complaint. What matters commercially is how much more, because the answer decides whether you sample an oil or skip straight to a working quantity. In this family the premium ranges from trivial to enormous, and it is not correlated with price: two of the cheapest oils per gram carry the steepest sampling premiums.

Mahogany Shea ₹164.02 ₹10.9347 ₹4.8852 (100 gm up) +123.8% · ×2.24

Read the last two rows as a warning about method, not about the oils. Vetiver and Mahogany Shea are both good buys at their working rungs — ₹5.80 and ₹4.8852 a gram — and both look expensive at 15 g because their ladders fall steeply. If either is on your shortlist and you are reasonably confident, the 50 gm packs (₹354 and ₹330.40) are a better sampling size: five 120 g jars instead of one, at a much smaller premium. Vetiver's 1 kg listing is currently sold out, so its largest buyable pack is the 500 gm at ₹2,900.

One oil in this family has no premium at all
Palo Santo lists at ₹6.018 a gram at 50 gm, 100 gm, 500 gm and 1 kg alike — four rungs at exactly the same rate, with only the 15 g pack above it. That makes it the easiest woody oil to scale: whatever you prove at 50 gm costs the same per candle at a kilo, so there is no pricing reason to over-buy and no penalty for growing slowly.

Three woody oils worth buying first

Three oils that between them cover dry timber, resin and oud, chosen for what their pages actually publish as much as for how they smell. Each card shows every listed pack, the per-kilo rate and how many 120 g jars at 8% each pack carries.

Sage and Cedarwood Fragrance Oil
If you want to learn the family on numbers rather than adjectives, start here. The page states a measured "Flashpoint: 190°C", "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)", "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", with a cure of "48–72 hours for soy wax", and it describes itself as "an earthy, woody, and herbaceous blend that brings together the calming freshness of sage with the grounding warmth of cedarwood". It has no 15 g pack — the entry is 50 gm at ₹354, which is five 120 g jars. Note the ladder: the 500 gm pack is the cheapest gram on the page, not the kilo.

The wellness-shelf wood, and the easiest ladder to plan around. Its page states "Fragrance Type: Warm, woody, and aromatic", a main aroma of "Earthy palo santo with soft citrus, warm amber, and a touch of incense", "Up to 10% for soy wax", "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a 48–72 hour soy cure and "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)". It also publishes a measured "Flashpoint: 93°C" — the lowest of the four measured woody values, and a reason to work carefully to your wax page's stated add temperature rather than improvising one.

Oud · the softest way into a hard family
Dark Vanilla Oud
Traditional oud is a demanding first sell in a living room; this is the version that is not. The page publishes "Top Notes Rich vanilla, spicy cardamom", "Middle Notes Exotic oud, deep amber", "Base Notes Warm musk, woody cedar", a stated load of "6-10% for candles, 10-15% for wax melts" and a cure of 48–72 hours in soy. One CSI customer, SUMAN BISHT, writes "M happy with the smell of dark vanilla". No flash point and no vanillin figure are published for it, so pour a white jar and photograph it at day 1 and day 21 before you commit a light-coloured range to it.

The ₹1,296.20 six-wood sampler

Here is the whole first purchase, costed: six woody oils in 15 g packs, the wax to pour them, six jars and six wicks. It produces six 120 g candles at 8%, one per wood, all on the same wax and in the same glass so that the only thing changing between them is the fragrance.

Worked out above: oils ₹93.22 + ₹93.22 + ₹103.84 + ₹105.02 + ₹106.20 + ₹140 = ₹641.50. Six 120 g jars at 8% need 6 × 110.4 g = 662.4 g of wax and 6 × 9.6 g = 57.6 g of oil, so one 1 kg pack of CSI 464 at ₹507.40 covers the wax with 337.6 g spare. Jars 6 × ₹47.20 = ₹283.20. Wicks: the 10-wick pack at ₹59, six used. Total ₹641.50 + ₹507.40 + ₹283.20 + ₹59 = ₹1,491.10. If you only count what the six jars actually consume — 662.4 g of wax at ₹0.5074 a gram = ₹336.10, six jars, six wicks at ₹5.90 = ₹35.40 — the consumed cost is ₹1,296.20, or ₹216.03 a jar.
1
Label the six jars before you melt anythingWrite the oil name, the load, the wax and the pour date on the base of each jar. Six woody candles look and smell more alike after three weeks than you expect, and an unlabelled sampler is a sampler you have to repeat.
2
Weigh, do not measureEach jar is 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil. Load is a weight percentage of the finished candle, so a spoon or a bottle cap is not a unit. A weighing scale at ₹354 pays for itself the first time it stops you pouring 12 g instead of 9.6 g.
3
Add fragrance at the temperature your wax page statesThe CSI 464 page states melt and pour at 80–90°C; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C. Stir for two full minutes, pour all six at the same temperature, and write down the actual readings rather than the targets.
4
Cure all six together, then burn them on the same dayLids on, dark cupboard, room temperature. Several woody pages state 48–72 hours in soy as a minimum; the standard practice for soy container candles is 14–21 days. Burn each for two hours in the same closed room, one after another, with a few minutes between, and score throw at 30 and 120 minutes.
5
Buy grams only for the winnersOne or two of the six will be obviously right for your shelf. Buy those at their cheapest listed rung — usually 100 gm or 500 gm — and leave the rest as blotters. The ₹641.50 you spent on oil has just prevented a ₹2,500 mistake.
The CSI principle
Buying woody oil well is a sequencing problem, not a shopping problem.
The oils are not hard to choose between once you have burned them. Everything that goes wrong in this family goes wrong because the buying happened in the wrong order: a big pack before a test, a scent before a customer, a price comparison before a burn. Get the order right and the ₹93.22 pack does most of the work.
Sampler done? Step up at the cheapest listed rung: Woody Oud 100 gm ₹453.12, Sandalwood 100 gm ₹502.68, Palo Santo 100 gm ₹601.80, Saffron Cedarwood 500 gm ₹2,584.20. Above 1 kg, the bulk line quotes.
Ask about scaling up

When to move from 15 g to 500 g

Every pack size answers a different question. Buy the pack that matches the question you are actually asking.

The four listed sizes below 1 kg map neatly onto four stages of a candle business, and the mismatch between stage and pack is where money disappears. A maker with no customers buying 500 g is stockpiling. A maker with a waiting list buying 15 g is wasting a weekend. The table below sets out what each size buys you in candles, not in grams.

Pack size against business stage
What each woody pack is actually for
Pack 200 g candles at 8% 120 g jars at 8% The question it answers Buy it when
15 g Under one 1 Do I like this wood in wax at all? Always, for anything you have not burned
50 g 3 5 Does it hold up across a wick test? When you need two or three jars of the same scent
100 g 6 10 Will a small batch sell? For a market stall, a pop-up or a gifting order
500 g 31 52 Can I keep it on the shelf for a season? After a scent has sold out once at retail
1 kg 62 104 Is this a permanent line? After two consecutive reorders

The jump that matters most is from 100 g to 500 g, because it is where the money changes scale: six candles becomes thirty-one. Make that jump only when the evidence is commercial rather than personal — a sold-out batch, a repeat order, a shop asking for more — and not when a per-gram rate looks tempting. The pack-size reasoning across the whole range is in should I buy 100 g, 500 g or 1 kg of each fragrance oil.

Do not buy a 500 g pack to "save" on a scent you are still deciding about. Saffron Cedarwood at 500 gm is ₹2,584.20 and covers thirty-one 200 g candles. If the wood turns out to be wrong for your brand, that saving has cost you ₹2,480 and a shelf you cannot use. The 15 gm at ₹103.84 asks the same question for four per cent of the money. Small packs are not a beginner's purchase — they are a professional's risk control, and experienced makers buy more of them, not fewer.

What to check on the page before you buy

A product page is evidence, and in this family the quality of that evidence varies enormously. Four things are worth reading before you add anything to a basket, and one thing is worth ignoring.

Read the stated candle load. Fifteen of the twenty-one woody listings state a percentage for candles; six state nothing. Sandalwood, Vetiver, Sage and Cedarwood and Palo Santo all state "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax"; Woody Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud state 6–10% for candles; the retailer-inspired teakwood states "7-9% in soy wax" with "Start at 7%". Where a page says nothing — Saffron Cedarwood, Mahogany Shea, Santal Noir — hold at 8% and never exceed your wax page's own ceiling.

Read the flash point only where it is measured. Four woody pages state a measured value: Vetiver 206°C, Sandalwood 203°C, Sage and Cedarwood 190°C and Palo Santo 93°C. Several other pages carry the line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold describing alcohol-based formats rather than a measurement of that oil — treat it as an absence, not a number. A flash point is a handling and transport classification; it is not a quality score and not a burn-off temperature. Where none is published, ask for the SDS on WhatsApp.

Read the colour statement. Sandalwood, Vetiver, Sage and Cedarwood and Palo Santo all state 0% vanillin and no discolouration risk, which makes them safe candidates for white and frosted glass. Sacred Sandal Ember warns of "golden or amber toning", Mint Sandalwood of "moderate cream-to-amber toning". Treat a warning as useful information about composition, not a defect: amber, resin and vanilla are exactly the materials that give a woody candle its weight, and the toning is the visible side of them.

And ignore the superlatives. The Sandalwood page describes its 203°C as the highest flash point in the CSI range; the Vetiver page states 206°C, so the claim is not correct as published. Keep the measurement, discard the ranking, and apply the same scepticism to any "strongest" or "best-selling" line on any page, here or anywhere. The stated numbers are useful; the adjectives around them are marketing.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials; it does not sell finished candles and does not manufacture fragrance oil. A page that wanted to maximise this order would push the 500 g packs. This one tells you to spend ₹641.50 on six 15 g packs, because a maker who finds the right wood keeps ordering, and a maker who buys half a kilo of the wrong one usually stops.

Every price and pack size here is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which always takes precedence. Scent descriptions are quoted verbatim from the product pages; nothing about how an oil smells or performs has been added by us. Flash points are quoted for the four woody oils that state a measured value, and loads only where a page states them — those are formulation guidance, not regulatory limits. CSI publishes no throw measurements for any oil, so this guide makes none.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest woody fragrance oil to buy in India?
The cheapest entry pack is ₹93.22 for 15 g of either Sandalwood Fragrance Oil or Woody Oud. The cheapest per gram among packs in stock is Woody Oud at ₹4.5312 from 100 gm upward, followed by Mahogany Shea at ₹4.8852 and Mint Sandalwood at ₹4.999. In a 120 g jar at 8% that is ₹43.50, ₹46.90 and ₹47.99 of oil.
How much woody fragrance oil do I need for one candle?
Load is a share of the finished candle, so a 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil; at 10% it is 180 g and 20 g. A 120 g jar at 8% is 110.4 g and 9.6 g. A 15 g pack therefore pours one 120 g jar with 5.4 g spare, a 50 g pack pours five, and a 100 g pack pours ten. Stay at or below the lower of the two stated ceilings — the oil page's and your wax page's.
Which woody fragrance oil is best for a beginner?
Choose a page that publishes numbers, because numbers give you something to follow. Sage and Cedarwood states a measured 190°C flash point, 0% vanillin, up to 10% in soy and a 48–72 hour cure. Palo Santo states the same load and cure plus a measured 93°C. Sandalwood adds a familiar scent most Indian buyers already recognise. Any of the three is a safer first candle than an undocumented oil.
Is a 15 g sample enough to judge a fragrance oil?
Enough to judge whether you want it, not enough to judge how it performs. Fifteen grams pours one 120 g jar at 8% — a single data point, on one wick, at one load. That is the right test for "does this wood belong in my range?" It is not enough for a wick comparison or a load comparison, which need at least two jars each. Step up to a 50 g pack when the question becomes technical.
Do woody fragrance oils need a longer cure?
The pages that state a cure give the same figures as other families — 48–72 hours for soy, 24–48 hours for paraffin — with one exception: Royal Oud states 72–96 hours before assessing cold throw. Those are stated minimums, not recommendations for a finished product. Standard practice for soy container candles is 14 to 21 days, and woody oils sit low in a composition, so judging one at day 3 will usually tell you the wrong thing.
Can I buy woody fragrance oils in bulk?
Yes, up to the listed pack sizes: 1 kg is the largest fragrance pack CSI lists, and eighteen woody oils are listed at 1 kg and in stock, from ₹4,531.20 to ₹12,000. Above that, multiply the kilos you need and send the list to the WhatsApp bulk line for a quote — CSI publishes no volume price list and no minimum order quantity, so the listed rate is your ceiling until you are quoted. The full kilo ladder is in woody candle fragrance oils wholesale in India.
