Reed Diffusers × Candle Fragrance Oil
You can usually use the same fragrance oil in both. CSI sells one oil range and no separate "diffuser-tested" line. What does not carry over is any result: the IFRA Category 10A limit, the load, clarity in the base and how it smells at room temperature all have to be checked again.

CSI materials for a four-bottle test of a candle oil against an alternative — Depth Base 500 ml, Roasted Coffee, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, 50 ml Gold bottles and black fibre reeds · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Same oil for both? Usually, yes. CSI sells one Fragrance Oils range; there is no separate diffuser line. Test it in your diffuser base before selling.

What changes? The load (10–30% in diffuser bases vs a 13% maximum in Chunks), the IFRA category (10A for reed diffusers), and every performance test.

Does a strong candle oil make a strong diffuser? Not reliably. Candles release fragrance with heat; diffusers at room temperature. Treat candle success as a reason to shortlist, not proof.

What does the test cost? ₹2,960.44 for your oil against one alternative, or less if you already hold your oil. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Yes, you can usually use your candle fragrance oil in reed diffusers, but test it as a new product: read its IFRA Category 10A limit, mix it at 10–30% in a diffuser base, check clarity and run a reed test.
Why: The oil, its price and its documents carry over; results do not. Candles throw with heat, diffusers evaporate at room temperature from reeds, and the IFRA limits are set per category.
Method: Two bottles of your candle oil and two of an alternative, same base, 20%, reeds and room; clarity at 48 h and 7 days, grams per day, blind scores and reed-tip photos to day 30.
One oil, two products: what carries over from candle to diffuser General practice and CSI's published figures · CSI publishes no candle or diffuser performance data for any oil Candle Reed diffuser The same oil? What does not: any test result. A great candle oil is a good candidate for a diffuser — and still needs the diffuser tests before you sell it.
The same fragrance oil in a candle and in a reed diffuser: how scent leaves, the carrier, the load range, the oil per product (16 g in a 200 g candle at 8%; 9 g in a 45 ml diffuser at 20%), the IFRA line to read and what you test. Only the oil, its price and its documents carry over.
Straight answer
Can I use the same fragrance oil for candles and reed diffusers, or should I buy a fragrance specifically tested for reed diffusion?
You can usually use the same oil — CSI sells one Fragrance Oils range, with no separate line "tested for reed diffusion" — but treat the diffuser as a new product and test the oil in it. Three things change. The IFRA limit: reed diffusers fall under IFRA Category 10A, a different line on the oil's certificate from candles; ask CSI for the certificate and use the lower of that limit and the base page's 30%. The load: diffuser bases run at 10–30% of the blend, against a 13% maximum in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, so the same 100 g of oil fills 11.11 50 ml diffusers at 20% but scents 6.25 200 g candles at 8%. And performance: a candle throws with heat, a diffuser evaporates from reeds at room temperature, so candle results do not predict diffuser results. Run your candle oil beside one alternative in the same base at 20%, checking clarity at 48 hours and 7 days, grams lost per day, blind room scores and the reed tips. If it passes, keep it; there is nothing new to buy. The four-bottle test costs ₹2,960.44.
One line: same oil, new tests: read the Category 10A line, recalculate the load, and let the reeds decide.
You can test the oil you already use in candles — CSI sells one fragrance-oil range, not separate candle and diffuser lines. The example puts Roasted Coffee in Depth Base (₹1,099.00, its page names coffee) at 20%, against Coffee Vanilla Tobacco as a second coffee-family candidate, in 50 ml Gold bottles: ₹2,960.44 for the four-bottle test.

The short answer: same oil, new tests

A fragrance oil does not know whether it is in a candle or a diffuser. Your test results do — and none of them transfer.

Yes, you can usually use the same fragrance oil in candles and reed diffusers, and many makers do. CSI sells a single Fragrance Oils range; some product handles still say "candle-fragrances" from how the catalogue was first built, but there is no separate CSI line of oils "tested for reed diffusion", and we publish no diffuser performance data — or candle performance data — for any oil. So the honest question is not "is this a candle oil or a diffuser oil?" but "has this oil passed the diffuser tests in my base?" Those tests are set out in the 100 ml method pillar, and the load question in the load pillar.

Those tests are different because the two products release fragrance in different ways. A candle relies on heat: the flame melts a pool of wax and the warm pool gives off fragrance — the hot throw. A reed diffuser has no heat at all: the liquid climbs the reeds at room temperature and evaporates from the tips. An oil that throws beautifully from a hot melt pool may behave differently at room temperature in a diffuser base, and an oil that sits quietly in a cold candle may do well in a diffuser. Neither result predicts the other with any certainty, so treat your candle experience as a reason to shortlist an oil, not as evidence it will work.

What carries over from candle to diffuser · CSI's published figures and general practice
Same oil, two products
Question In a candle In a reed diffuser Carries over?
The oil and its price per gram Same oil — e.g. Roasted Coffee ₹3.74/g at 1 kg Same oil, same price Yes

Load Luxury Soy Wax Chunks max 13%; 8% a common working default Base pages 10–30%, 20% recommended (Pure Performance) No — recalculate
Carrier compatibility Does it bind in the wax without sweating? Does it dissolve in the base and stay clear? No — re-test
How it smells in use Hot throw from a melt pool, cold throw from the jar Room-temperature evaporation from reeds No — re-test
Safety limit The IFRA category that covers candles IFRA Category 10A, which covers reed diffusers No — read the 10A line
The CSI principle
Shortlist from your candle experience. Decide from your diffuser tests.
The oil, its price and its documents carry over. Every result — load, clarity, throw, life — has to be earned again in the new product.

The IFRA line you have not read yet

This is the part most candle makers miss. An IFRA certificate lists the maximum use level of that oil for each product category. Candles and reed diffusers sit in different categories: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments, as suppliers' IFRA guides commonly summarise it — confirm against the category descriptions on the certificate itself. An oil you have used happily in candles has a candle limit you may know by heart and a Category 10A limit you may never have looked at. They are not the same line, and there is no reason to expect the same number.

Diffusers also use far higher loads than candles: CSI's base pages range from 10% to 30% of the blend, where a candle in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is capped at 13% by the wax maker. So a diffuser formula is much more likely to run into the oil's IFRA limit than your candle ever did. CSI publishes no IFRA percentage for any oil on its product pages — ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's IFRA certificate, find the Category 10A line, and use the lower of that limit and the base page's 30%. Finding the maximum percentage from supplier data and Category 10A covers this in depth.

The common mistake: "it's safe in my candles, so it's safe in my diffusers." Safety limits are set per product category, and a diffuser at 20% puts far more of the oil into the product than a candle at 8%. Fix: before you mix the first diffuser, read the Category 10A line on the oil's certificate and write it on your formula sheet. If the limit is below your planned load, the limit is your load.

The oil maths changes too

The same 100 g of oil goes a different distance in each product. In the series default candle — 200 g at 8% — each candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, so 100 g of oil scents 6.25 candles. A 50 ml diffuser filled to an example 45 g at 20% takes 9 g of oil, so the same 100 g fills 11.11 diffusers; a 120 ml diffuser filled to 100 g at 20% takes 20 g, which is more than the candle. Load and fill, not the product type, decide how far the oil goes.

Oil per product · Roasted Coffee at the 1 kg rate (₹3.74/g) · candle per the series convention (oil = W × L) · diffuser by weight of blend
How far 100 g of the same oil goes
Product Fill Load Oil per product Oil cost per product Products per 100 g oil
Candle (Chunks, max 13%) 200 g 8% 16 g ₹59.81 6.25
50 ml reed diffuser 45 g (example) 20% 9 g ₹33.64 11.11
120 ml reed diffuser 100 g (example) 20% 20 g ₹74.76 5.00

That matters for stock planning if you make both. A maker who reorders a 1 kg pack of an oil on candle demand alone can run short once diffusers take a share of it. Price per gram does not change between the products, and on CSI's catalogue it rarely falls much above 100 g — the reliable step is from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g — so buying one larger pack for both products buys convenience and stock security more than a lower rate. Monthly wholesale requirements from expected sales and lead times handles the combined planning.

The test: your candle oil against one alternative

If your candle oil is good in a diffuser, a side-by-side will show it. If it is not, the same test shows you whether another oil does better.

Put your candle oil in a diffuser base at 20% and run it beside one alternative oil of the same family, identical in every other way. In the example, Roasted Coffee is the candle oil and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco is the alternative — both coffee-family, both in Depth Base, whose page names coffee among the rich gourmand families it is for. Two bottles per oil, 50 ml Gold bottles filled to an example 45 g, 7 black fibre reeds each. The one variable is the oil.

Read both certificates firstCategory 10A line for each oil. If either is below 20%, run both arms at the lower figure so the comparison stays fair.
2
Mix each arm as one weighed batchTared beaker: 80.00 g of Depth, then 20.00 g of oil, stir until clear, pour a 10 g clarity sample. Clean the beaker completely between oils — coffee notes linger.
3
Rest 24–48 hours and check clarityEvery CSI base page asks for the rest. Read both samples against white and black card at 48 hours and again at 7 days. A haze in one arm is already a result.
4
Fill, reed and flipWeigh 45 g into each bottle, insert 7 reeds dealt at random from one pack, flip once after the first hour (the Pure Performance page's instruction — check your own base's page). Weigh each bottle: day 0.
5
Weigh and score blindWeigh on day 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 30. Score one arm at a time in the same room on your written scale, with the scorer not knowing which oil is in the room. Photograph the reed tips at day 7, 14 and 30 — gourmand oils are commonly described as the ones more likely to darken reeds.

Your candle oil passes if it stays clear, loses weight steadily, scores at or above your pass line through day 14 (day 30 if you have the time) and leaves the reed tips clean enough that weight loss does not stall. If the alternative beats it clearly on the same base and load, that is a reason to use a different oil in diffusers — not because one is a "diffuser oil", but because it measured better in this product. Using the same base for lavender, jasmine, vanilla and coffee and vanilla clogging reeds faster than lemon follow up the family-specific questions.

Do not test in the room where you burn candles
A room that has had candles burning in it carries fragrance in fabrics and on surfaces for a while, and a nose used to your candle scent judges a diffuser against it. Score diffusers in a room with no candles for at least a day, with a scorer coming in from fresh air.

If you already hold your candle oil, drop its line — use the bottle you make candles from, and write its order date on the batch sheet. Coffee Vanilla Tobacco has no 15 g size, so its smallest pack is 50 g at ₹449.00. Depth is the example base because its page names coffee; if your candle oil is a floral or citrus, use the base whose page names that family instead — the base pillar lists them — or Pure Performance 100 g at ₹325.00 if you are unsure.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. There is nothing to buy if your candle oil passes: no "diffuser grade" version, no special listing. We include an alternative oil in this kit because a comparison makes the result readable, not because your candle oil needs replacing. If you are confident, test your candle oil alone at 15% and 20% in one base and save the ₹449.00 — the 20% compatibility check shows that single-oil ladder.

What the same oil costs in each product

At production rates, the liquid in one 50 ml diffuser (45 g at 20% in Depth at an example 1.00 g/ml) costs ₹112.77 with Roasted Coffee and ₹156.52 with Coffee Vanilla Tobacco. With the ₹82.60 bottle and 7 black reeds at ₹8.00 each, the CSI materials come to ₹251.37 and ₹295.12. The alternative is ₹43.75 dearer per bottle, so it has to measure clearly better to earn its place. For comparison, the oil in a 200 g candle at 8% costs ₹59.81 — more than the oil in this 50 ml diffuser, less than in a 100 g fill at 20% (₹74.76).

There is no such thing as a diffuser oil or a candle oil on our shelves. There is an oil that has passed your diffuser tests, and one that has not yet.

The decision rule

Working decision rule · stop at the first line that is true
Same oil, or a different one?
If this is true Do this
The oil's Category 10A limit is below your planned load Use the limit as your load, or choose another oil — whatever the candle results
Your candle oil hazes in the base at 20% and at 15% Try the base whose page names its family; if it still hazes, use a different oil in diffusers
Clear, steady g/day, scores at your pass line Use the same oil. Buy nothing new; reorder as you already do
Clear but scores below the alternative on the same base Use the alternative in diffusers; keep your candle oil for candles
Reed tips clog by day 14 with your oil only Test a lower load first; see 7968
You make both products from one oil Plan stock for both — 100 g of oil fills fewer 120 ml diffusers than it scents candles

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer is "buy our diffuser oils". We do not have a separate diffuser range, and this page says so; it tells you there is nothing new to buy if your candle oil passes, and says plainly that we publish no candle or diffuser performance data, and no IFRA percentage, for any oil.

Diffuser bases, fibre reeds, Gold bottles, beakers, scale and mixer are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance oils are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every gram split, ml-to-g conversion, per-bottle cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; densities are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.

Bottle counts per arm, clarity checkpoints, weighing schedules, room-scoring scales and loss allowances are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffuser performance. The 45 ml fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the 200 g candle at 8% and the 0–5 scale are labelled examples; Roasted Coffee and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco are example oils. Frequently asked questions

Can I use candle fragrance oil in a reed diffuser?
Usually, yes. Read the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, mix it in a reed diffuser base at 10–30%, and check clarity and reed performance before selling.
Is reed diffuser fragrance oil different from candle fragrance oil?
At CSI there is one fragrance-oil range for both. What differs is the load, the IFRA category and the tests — not the bottle you buy.
Why does my candle fragrance smell weak in a diffuser?
A candle releases fragrance with heat; a diffuser at room temperature from reeds. Check the load, the base and the reeds — the diagnosis hub for weak diffusers covers it.
What IFRA category is a reed diffuser?
Reed diffusers are listed under IFRA Category 10A in current amendments, as suppliers' IFRA guides commonly summarise it. Read that line on your oil's certificate.
How much candle fragrance oil do I put in a reed diffuser?
CSI's base pages give 10–30% of the total blend, 20% recommended — far more than a candle. The oil's Category 10A limit also applies; the lower number wins.
Can I use the same fragrance for candles and diffusers in a gift set?
Yes, if it passes both products' tests and both IFRA lines allow your loads. Plan stock for both: diffusers use more oil per product at larger fills.

Candle comparison uses the series candle convention: 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 13% maximum (wax maker's stated formulation limit). Diffuser: 2 bottles per oil, 100 g batches at 20% (45 g per 50 ml bottle at an example 1.00 g/ml + 10 g clarity sample), 7 black reeds. Costs use oils at the 1 kg rate and Depth 500 ml at the example density. The IFRA category for candles is not numbered here; read it on the certificate. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base is a "Professional … Reed & Car Diffuser Base", crystal clear per its page, used at 10–30% fragrance of the total blend with a 24–48 hour rest before bottling. Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", a "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil", and "flip reeds after the first hour". Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand; "avoid light florals, fresh citrus, aquatics — use Lift Base"; slower "cold diffusion"; "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest"; "allow 2–3 hours before the first flip". Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity. Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils". Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky, light gourmand. Reed page — 20.3 cm long; "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance". Bottle page — variants 50 ml and 120 ml (its text says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter, fill line and any reducer are not stated. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity result for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; no IFRA percentage for any oil; and no bulk base price. The five bases are told apart only by what their pages say they are for — never by a measured result. IFRA: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments as commonly summarised in suppliers' guides; read the Category 10A limit on the certificate for your oil, which CSI provides on WhatsApp request. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
