Which Reed Diffuser Base Should I Buy in India if I Want Strong Fragrance Diffusion and a Reasonable Product Life?
Share
Which should I buy first? The base your oil's family points to (Lift, Softness, Longevity or Depth), plus Pure Performance 100 g at ₹325.00 as a neutral control.
What load? Start the comparison at 20% by weight — Pure Performance's recommended load — capped by the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit. A 100 g fill is 20.0 g oil + 80.0 g base.
How do I judge life? Weigh the bottle with reeds on fixed days: fill grams ÷ grams lost per day = projected days. See the grid.

The short answer: which base to buy first
CSI lists five reed and car diffuser bases in stock: Pure Performance Base, Longevity Base, Lift Base, Depth Base and Softness Base. A sixth, the CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ (₹1,499.00), is the one whose page talks about the strongest projection — and it is out of stock, so it is not in any kit on this page. The other five pages do not claim to beat each other on strength or life. They say what each base is for: Lift for light florals, citrus, green and fruity oils; Softness for soft florals, powdery, musky and light gourmand; Longevity for amber, oriental, woody, resinous and spicy; Depth for rich gourmand, leather, smoky and chypre; Pure Performance as a neutral base for every family.
That gives you a practical buying rule. Find your oil's family, buy the base its page names, and buy Pure Performance alongside it as the neutral control — the 100 g size at ₹325.00 is enough for three test bottles. Then mix both by weight at the same load, rest them, weigh the bottles on a schedule and score them blind in the room the product is meant for. "Strong fragrance diffusion" becomes a room score you wrote down; "reasonable product life" becomes the number of days your fill lasts at the grams per day you measured. The base that wins on both, in your bottle, with your oil and reeds, is the one you buy in 500 ml.
We are deliberately not telling you which CSI base is strongest. We have not published diffusion, evaporation or longevity measurements for any of them, and the composition of none of them is published either — so nobody, including us, can honestly say from the label that one will out-throw another in your room. What we can do is give you the method, the arithmetic and a priced test that settles it in three to four weeks. That is what the rest of this pillar page does.
| Your oil is mainly… | Buy first | Price | Control beside it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light floral, fresh citrus, green, fruity | Lift Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Pure Performance 100 g | Lift's page names these; Longevity's page says to avoid them |
| Soft floral, powdery, musky, light gourmand | Softness Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Pure Performance 100 g | Softness's page names lavender, jasmine, rose, peony |
| Amber, oriental, woody, resinous, spicy | Longevity Base | ₹1,296.00 / 500 ml | Pure Performance 100 g | Longevity's page names these and claims slower "cold diffusion" |
| Rich gourmand, leather, smoky, chypre | Depth Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Pure Performance 100 g | Depth's page names coffee, chocolate, spiced vanilla |
| Mixed family, or not sure | Pure Performance Base | ₹325.00 / 100 g | The family base you suspect | Neutral page, "for all fragrance families" |
| "Strongest projection" | CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ | ₹1,499.00 | — | Out of stock. Not offered on this page |
What "strong" and "reasonable life" mean in grams
Every reed diffuser is a trade between two things that pull against each other. The liquid climbs the reeds and evaporates from their exposed surface; the fragrance you smell in the room arrives with that evaporation. More liquid leaving per day usually means more scent in the air and a shorter life. Less liquid leaving per day usually means a longer life and a quieter room. "Strong diffusion with a reasonable life" is therefore not a property you can buy in a bottle — it is a point on a curve you have to find for your oil, your load, your reed count and your room.
The way to make it concrete is to measure it in grams. Weigh the filled bottle with its reeds in it on day 0, then on fixed days after. The weight lost divided by the days elapsed is your evaporation rate in grams per day. Divide the grams of liquid you filled by that rate, and you have the projected life. That single number — g/day — links both halves of the question. If your example 120 ml bottle holds 100 g of blend (an example fill of 100 ml at an example 1.00 g per ml), a bottle losing 2 g a day lasts about 50 days; one losing 4 g a day lasts about 25. Whether the faster one smells twice as strong is the second half of the test — the room score — and it frequently does not.
| If your bottle loses… | Life of a 100 g fill | Life of a 45 g fill (50 ml bottle example) | Liquid cost per day (₹284.58 fill) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 g/day | 100 days | 45 days | ₹2.85 |
| 1.5 g/day | 67 days | 30 days | ₹4.27 |
| 2.0 g/day | 50 days | 22 days | ₹5.69 |
| 3.0 g/day | 33 days | 15 days | ₹8.54 |
| 4.0 g/day | 25 days | 11 days | ₹11.38 |
| 5.0 g/day | 20 days | 9 days | ₹14.23 |
Read the grid as arithmetic, not as a promise. CSI publishes no evaporation rate for any base, and the rate you measure will depend on the oil, the load, the number and condition of the reeds, the bottle neck, the room temperature and the airflow, not just the base. What the grid does is turn your target into a number before you test. If you want a 120 ml product to last at least 45 days at a 100 g fill, you need a measured rate at or below about 2.22 g/day. If you want 60 days, you need about 1.67 g/day or less. Write your target at the top of the scoring sheet before the test starts, so you cannot move the goalposts afterwards.
"Strong" needs the same discipline. Choose the room the product is for — this page uses an example 120 sq ft bedroom, about 11.15 m² of floor and about 33.4 m³ of air at an example 3.0 m ceiling — and score it blind on a house scale you write down once. There is no industry "millilitres per square foot" standard for diffusers, so the room is your reference, not a formula. Bedroom versus living room shows how room size and airflow change the reading, and a 20% diffuser that cannot fill a 150 sq ft bedroom covers what to test before you raise the load.
The five CSI bases, and what each page says
All five in-stock bases are titled "Professional … Reed & Car Diffuser Base", all are described as crystal clear on their pages, and all five pages give the same fragrance range: start around 10%, up to 30% of the total blend, then rest the blend 24–48 hours before bottling. Pure Performance's page adds that 20% is its recommended load and that a typical working blend is 75% base and 25% fragrance. Where the pages differ is in which fragrance families they say the base suits and how they describe its diffusion.
| Base | Sizes and prices | Per unit | What its page says it is for | What the page claims about diffusion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Performance Base | 100 g ₹325.00 · 500 ml ₹1,099.00 | ₹3.25 per g · ₹2.20 per ml | Neutral, all families, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements" | None beyond neutrality; "flip reeds after the first hour" |
| Longevity Base | 500 ml ₹1,296.00 | ₹2.59 per ml | Oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy, gourmand; avoid light florals, fresh citrus, aquatics | Slower "cold diffusion"; 2–3 hours before the first flip; keep away from strong air currents |
| Lift Base | 500 ml ₹1,099.00 | ₹2.20 per ml | "Perfumery-grade"; floral, citrus, green, fruity | Positioned for brighter families; no diffusion figure |
| Depth Base | 500 ml ₹1,099.00 | ₹2.20 per ml | Chypre, leather, smoky, rich gourmand (coffee, chocolate, spiced vanilla) | Warmth, roundness, "slow diffusion"; "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils" |
| Softness Base | 500 ml ₹1,099.00 | ₹2.20 per ml | Soft florals (lavender, jasmine, rose, peony), powdery/musky, light gourmand | Positioned for soft families; no diffusion figure |
| CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ | ₹1,499.00 | — | Page: strongest projection, "powerful reed diffusers", car perfumes | Out of stock — not offered |
Two things in that table matter more than any single claim in it. First, the composition of every CSI base is unpublished. No page says what the base is made of, and none publishes a density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life. So this page will never call a CSI base "DPG-based", "Augeo-type", "alcohol-free" or anything else about its chemistry. If you need technical data for your own compliance file, ask CSI on WhatsApp whether a safety data sheet or technical data sheet is available for the specific base; what to check on the SDS and technical data sheet tells you what to look for when you get one.
Second, the diffusion words on the pages are claims, not results. "Slower cold diffusion" on the Longevity page and "slow diffusion" on the Depth page are useful hints about what each base is designed to do, and they suggest which way to look if your current diffuser runs out too fast. They are not measurements, and we do not convert them into rankings. Lines like "performs in Indian climates", "no separation" or "even wicking" belong in the same category: write them on your test sheet as hypotheses, then check them.
| Product | Price | What it is for | Use it for reeds? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSI Ultrasonic Diffusion Concentrate Base™ | ₹1,649.00 | Ultrasonic diffusers (Ultrasonic Diffusers ₹249.00 each) | No — a different delivery system |
| Room & Linen Spray Base | ₹999.00 / 500 g | Sprays | No |
| Perfume Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 g | Fine fragrance | No |
| Professional Attar Base | ₹399.00 / 100 g · ₹1,995.00 / 500 g · ₹3,999.00 / 1 kg | Attars | No |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray | ₹383.00 / 150 ml · ₹520.00 / 1 litre | Cleaning jars and tools | Never a diffuser solvent |
It is tempting to reach for whichever clear base is already on your shelf. Resist it. A spray base and a perfume base are designed for a completely different job — a fine mist or skin — and an ultrasonic concentrate is designed for a machine, not for capillary travel up a fibre reed. If you want to understand how the generic solvent families compare — DPG, Augeo-type solvents and alcohol-based formulas — our pillar on Augeo-type bases, DPG and alcohol covers them from general industry knowledge, and ready-made base versus DPG for commercial diffusers weighs the ready-made route against a single solvent.
Match your oil's family to a base before you compare anything
The family match is the cheapest decision you will make, because it is free and it narrows five bases to one or two. Most fragrance oils are blends that straddle families, so read the top and the heart of the oil, not just its name. A "Bergamot Amber" is a bright citrus opening over a warm amber base: Lift's page names citrus, Longevity's page names amber — and Longevity's page also says to avoid fresh citrus. That tension is exactly why this page's worked example uses it. When an oil sits on a border, test both candidate bases against the neutral control, rather than guessing which half of the name matters more.
| Family | Base candidates (page assignment) | Example CSI oil | Smallest in-stock size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh citrus | Lift; Pure Performance control | Citrus Lemon | 15 g ₹81.42 | Citrus base question owns this family |
| Light floral | Lift or Softness; Pure Performance control | Jasmine | 15 g ₹103.00 | Jasmine is named on both Lift and Softness pages |
| Soft floral, herbal floral | Softness; Pure Performance control | Lavender | 15 g ₹105.02 | Softness's page names lavender |
| Fruity | Lift; Pure Performance control | Fresh Strawberries | 15 g ₹113.28 | Lift's page names apple, mango, peach |
| Amber with citrus top | Longevity and Lift; Pure Performance control | Bergamot Amber | 15 g ₹105.02 | The worked example on this page |
| Woody, resinous | Longevity; Pure Performance control | Palo Santo | 15 g ₹106.20 | Heavy oud, amber and sandalwood owns the heaviest end |
| Spicy gourmand | Depth or Longevity; Pure Performance control | Cinnamon Vanilla | 15 g ₹106.20 | Depth's page names spiced vanilla |
| Rich gourmand (coffee) | Depth; Pure Performance control | Roasted Coffee | 15 g ₹93.22 | Depth's page names coffee |
Use this as a shortlist, not a verdict. The pages assign families; they do not guarantee that a particular oil stays clear or diffuses well in that base. Fragrance oils are complex blends and two "vanilla" oils can behave completely differently. If you are launching several fragrances, the same base for lavender, jasmine, vanilla and coffee? shows how to decide whether one base can carry your whole range, and one base in bulk or a base per family runs the purchasing side of that decision.
Pure Performance: the 100 g or the 500 ml?
Pure Performance is the only CSI base sold in two sizes, and they are in different units: 100 g at ₹325.00 (₹3.25 per gram) and 500 ml at ₹1,099.00 (₹2.20 per millilitre). You cannot compare a price per gram with a price per millilitre without the base's density, and the density is not published. What you can calculate is the break-even: the 500 ml works out cheaper per gram whenever the base weighs more than 0.676 g per ml (₹1,099.00 ÷ 500 ml ÷ ₹3.25 per g). Weigh 100 ml of it in a beaker to find out where yours sits.
| If the base weighs… | 500 ml weighs | 500 ml per gram | 100 g per gram | Cheaper per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.95 g/ml (example) | 475 g | ₹2.31 | ₹3.25 | 500 ml |
| 1.00 g/ml (example) | 500 g | ₹2.20 | ₹3.25 | 500 ml |
| 1.05 g/ml (example) | 525 g | ₹2.09 | ₹3.25 | 500 ml |
At any plausible density for a liquid diffuser base the 500 ml is the cheaper way to buy grams — but that is not the point of the 100 g. The 100 g exists so that you can test a neutral base without buying half a litre of it. For this page's three-bottle control arm you need 252.0 g of base including a 5% working allowance, and three 100 g packs (₹975.00) cost less than one 500 ml pack. Once you add the hold-back bottle, the arm needs 336.0 g, and the 500 ml becomes the cheaper buy (₹1,099.00). Buy the size that fits the test in front of you, then buy 500 ml when a winner goes into production.
What else decides strength and life, so you do not blame the base
Before you spend on a second or third base, be honest about what else sets the strength and the life of a reed diffuser. Each of these levers is owned in depth by its own post in the series, and each can make a good base look weak or a weak base look good. The test on this page holds all of them constant so that only the base changes between arms.
| Lever | How it pushes strength and life | Hold it constant by… | Owned in depth by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance load | More oil can mean more scent per gram evaporated — up to the point where clarity or flow suffers; it also raises cost | Same % by weight in every arm (20% here) | 7941 pillar, 7948 |
| Reed count | More reeds expose more surface: more scent and faster use, per the reed page's own guidance | 6 reeds in every bottle, same colour, same pack | 7971, 7972 |
| Reed condition | Reeds that darken, clog or turn sticky can slow uptake | New reeds from one pack; photograph them | 7968, 7969 |
| Bottle and neck | A wider opening is commonly described as letting more vapour escape around the reeds | One bottle type (120 ml Gold), same fill | 7976 |
| Room, airflow, temperature | Warm, moving air speeds evaporation; a large room dilutes scent | Same room, door closed, fan off, temperature logged | 7965, 7975 |
| The oil itself | Different oils diffuse differently in the same base | One oil, one bottle of it, in every arm | 7908 |
The reed lever deserves a specific warning. CSI's reed page states that for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance, with more reeds for stronger throw and faster diffusion and fewer for a subtler, longer-lasting result. That is the page's guidance, not a test result, but it tells you that reed count can move both of your targets at once — often more cheaply than a base change. If a base narrowly misses your strength target but beats your life target comfortably, adding one or two reeds in a follow-up round may close the gap. Change it only after the base comparison is done, and only with a control.
The formula, by weight
Every CSI base page expresses the load as a share of the total blend. By weight that is simple: oil grams = blend grams × load, base grams = blend grams × (1 − load). For this page's example bottle — 100 g of blend at 20% — that is 20.0 g of oil and 80.0 g of base. Pure Performance's page gives its own example by volume, "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil". Volume works if both liquids weigh the same per millilitre; they usually do not, and neither density is published. Weighing removes the problem entirely, which is why every arm on this page is mixed on a scale.
| Load | Oil | Base | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 10.0 g | 90.0 g | Page: "start at 10%" |
| 15% | 15.0 g | 85.0 g | A common first step up |
| 20% | 20.0 g | 80.0 g | Pure Performance page: recommended — used here |
| 25% | 25.0 g | 75.0 g | Pure Performance page: typical working blend |
| 30% | 30.0 g | 70.0 g | Page maximum — the oil's IFRA limit may be lower |
| Example blend density | 100 ml weighs | Oil at 20% | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.95 g/ml | 95.0 g | 19.0 g | 76.0 g |
| 1.00 g/ml | 100.0 g | 20.0 g | 80.0 g |
| 1.05 g/ml | 105.0 g | 21.0 g | 84.0 g |
The load cap is not only the base page's 30%. Reed diffusers are listed under IFRA Category 10A in current IFRA amendments, as suppliers' IFRA guides commonly summarise them — confirm against the category descriptions on the certificate itself. Each fragrance oil carries its own Category 10A limit on its IFRA certificate, and the lower of the oil's limit and the base page's ceiling is the one you must use. CSI does not publish an IFRA percentage for any oil on its product pages, so ask CSI on WhatsApp for the certificate of the specific oil and read its Category 10A line before you fix a load. How to determine the maximum fragrance percentage walks through that reading, and an oil whose certificate allows less than 25% covers what to do when the certificate is lower than you planned.
Round one: three bases, one oil, ten bottles
The worked example tests Bergamot Amber — an amber with a citrus top — in three bases: Pure Performance as the neutral control, Longevity because its page names amber, and Lift because its page names citrus. Every bottle is the 120 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml, filled with an example 100 g of blend at 20%, dressed with 6 black fibre reeds from one pack, and placed in the same room. Substitute your own oil and its family's bases; the structure does not change.
| Arm | Bottles | Base | Per bottle | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A — control | B1–B3 | Pure Performance Base | 80.0 g base + 20.0 g oil | Neutral reference, "for all fragrance families" |
| B — amber base | B4–B6 | Longevity Base | 80.0 g base + 20.0 g oil | Does the base named for amber add strength or life? |
| C — citrus base | B7–B9 | Lift Base | 80.0 g base + 20.0 g oil | Does the base named for citrus brighten it, and at what g/day? |
| Hold-back | B10 | Pure Performance Base | 80.0 g base + 20.0 g oil, capped, no reeds | Clarity reference and the "fresh" smell at the end of the test |
| Checkpoint | What you look for | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately after mixing | Clear against white and black cards; no streaks or oily layer | Mix again gently; if it stays hazy, note it and continue — it may clear in the rest |
| 24 h and 48 h (the pages' rest period) | Still clear; no droplets on the glass, no layer at the bottom | Step the load down by 5 points and remix, or try the base the page assigns to the family |
| 7 days | Clear in B10 and in the reeded bottles | A slow haze is a compatibility signal; record it before you trust the g/day |
| After a cool night (example: a room near its lowest temperature, or a few hours in a fridge door) | Clear once it returns to room temperature | Clouding that returns as it warms is worth noting; persistent cloudiness fails the arm |
Never "rescue" a cloudy blend by adding water or alcohol. Neither is part of the base you bought, both change the blend, and alcohol adds a flammability and packaging question you did not have before. If a blend clouds, the honest next steps are a lower load or a different base. The Longevity page itself says "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", and that heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases. Which base works with high fragrance loads without cloudiness runs that question properly, and the clarity tests to do before buying 5 kg turns it into a purchase gate.
Scoring strength and life together
There is no industry scale for reed diffuser strength. That is not a gap in our data — nobody publishes one. So you write your own, once, before the first bottle is scored, and you never change it between rounds. The scale below is an example; change the words if you like, but keep it to whole numbers and keep the conditions fixed: same room, door closed, fan and AC off for the scoring period, the same distance, and evaluators who have not just come from a scented room.
| Score | At the door after 30 minutes (example) | At 1 m from the bottle (example) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Nothing | Nothing |
| 1 | Nothing | Faint, only if you look for it |
| 2 | Faint, only if you look for it | Clearly there |
| 3 | Clearly there | Clearly there, recognisable |
| 4 | Recognisable as the fragrance | Full; fills the area around the bottle |
| 5 | Fills the room | Too strong to sit beside — note it |
| Bottle | Arm | Day 0 g | Day 3 g | Day 21 g | g/day | Projected days | Blind scores d7 / d14 / d21 | Clarity d7 | Reeds d28 |

Decide in advance what counts as a real difference, so two people reading the same sheet reach the same answer. A working rule: an arm beats the control only if all three of its bottles score at least one point higher than the lowest control bottle at day 14 and day 21, and its average g/day still meets your life target. If an arm smells stronger but misses the life target, it has not won; it has simply moved along the curve. If an arm lasts longer but scores the same, it has won on life alone — which may be exactly what you wanted. Three bottles per arm is a screen, not a final verdict; repeat a winner against a fresh control with more bottles before production. How to compare two bases on five measures formalises this into a full comparison sheet.

If you cannot justify three bases yet, run the two-arm version: Pure Performance in three 100 g packs (₹975.00) against the single base your oil's family points to (500 ml), six reeded bottles from the same pack of ten and four spare bottles for a load step later. You lose the ability to compare two family bases, but you keep the one comparison that matters most — whether the family base beats a neutral control at all. Should I buy samples of several bases before a big order? covers the cost of sampling more widely.
Cost per bottle and cost per day of use
Once you know your g/day, cost becomes a function of the base you chose — not only its price but how long the bottle lasts. At production rates — Bergamot Amber Fragrance Oil at its 1 kg rate of ₹5.44 per gram, each base at its 500 ml price converted at the example 1.00 g per ml — the CSI material cost of one 120 ml bottle at 20% is shown below. The ₹106.20 bottle and 6 black reeds at the 50-and-over rate of ₹8.00 each are the same for every arm; only the liquid changes.
| Base | Base ₹/g (example density) | Liquid | Bottle | Reeds | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Performance | ₹2.20 | ₹284.58 | ₹106.20 | ₹48.00 | ₹438.78 |
| Longevity | ₹2.59 | ₹316.10 | ₹106.20 | ₹48.00 | ₹470.30 |
| Lift | ₹2.20 | ₹284.58 | ₹106.20 | ₹48.00 | ₹438.78 |
The difference between the dearest and cheapest liquid is ₹31.52 per bottle — the Longevity premium at 80.0 g of base. That premium is worth paying only if your test shows the Longevity bottles last proportionally longer or score higher. A worked example of the arithmetic, using rates that are not measurements: if the control lost 2.0 g a day and lasted 50 days, its liquid cost ₹5.69 per day; a Longevity bottle would need to last at least 56 days — about 1.80 g/day or less — to match it per day. Replace 2.0 g/day with your control's measured rate and the break-even comes straight out.
Price per day is not the only commercial lens. A customer pays per bottle, not per day, and judges the product by how it smells in the first fortnight and whether it is still working in week six. Is a more expensive base worth it at a lower fragrance percentage? runs the trade between base price and oil saving, the full cost of a 100 ml diffuser adds labels, boxes and courier, and a cheap base with weak throw sets out how to value repeat purchases when a better base costs more.
The decision rule: what to buy after round one
Apply the rule from the top after the day-21 weighing and blind scores, and stop at the first line that is true.
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| An arm clouded, layered or dropped sediment at 48 h or 7 days | Compatibility, not strength | Drop that arm at this load. Retest 5 points lower before you consider it again |
| No arm meets your strength target, including the control | Not a base problem yet | Buy no new base. Check load, reed count and room first — 7946, 7972 |
| No arm meets your life target | Everything runs too fast in this room or bottle | Buy no new base yet. Test fewer reeds or a smaller neck opening — 7930, 7976 |
| A family base beats the control on score and meets the life target, all three bottles | The family base adds something | Buy that base in 500 ml; repeat once with more bottles before a 5 × 500 ml order |
| A family base matches the control on score but lasts clearly longer | A life win | Buy it if the extra days cover its extra cost per day (see the money section) |
| The control ties or beats both family bases | Neutral is enough for this oil | Buy Pure Performance 500 ml at ₹1,099.00 and keep it as your house base |
| Results differ by oil across your range | No single base fits all | One base per family — 7934, 7992 |
Notice that two of the seven lines end in buying no base at all. That is deliberate. A new base re-opens your load, clarity and reed-count validation, so it is only worth buying when the test shows the base — not the load, the reeds or the room — is what limits you. If you reach a buying line, buy 500 ml first, even if you plan to scale; there is no 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg base listing, larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp, and no volume discount is published. 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of base? translates bulk quantities into 500 ml multiples.

Find your exact base question
This page is the hub of the second section of the series — "Which reed diffuser base should I buy?" — and one of the series' five pillar pages. Every post in the section uses the same family-first shortlist, the same weigh-and-score spine and the same rule that no CSI base is ranked without a test; each starts from a different doubt.
| What you are asking | What the post settles | Post |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made base or DPG for a commercial range? | Consistency, documentation and cost against a single solvent | 7922 |
| Can DPG alone carry the fragrance up the reeds? | Viscosity, capillary travel and how to measure uptake | 7923 |
| Augeo-type, DPG or alcohol — what is the difference? | The three solvent routes compared (pillar) | 7924 |
| I want a carrier that does not smell of itself | Blank-base odour testing | 7925 |
| Premium base or blend my own solvents to save money? | Full cost of self-blending versus buying | 7926 |
| High loads without separation or cloudiness | The load ladder and clarity hold | 7927 |
| Fast-evaporating or slow base for a 100 ml product? | Choosing a point on the life–strength curve | 7928 |
| Mine lasts long but barely smells | Diagnose before switching to a lower-viscosity base | 7929 |
| Mine evaporates too quickly | Comparing slower bases without losing throw | 7930 |
| Perfumer's alcohol as a base? | Flammability, packaging and performance | 7931 |
| Citrus that diffuses without vanishing | A base test for citrus families | 7932 |
| Heavy oud, amber and sandalwood | Bases for slow, heavy oils | 7933 |
| One base for lavender, jasmine, vanilla and coffee? | When each formula needs its own test | 7934 |
| Tests before buying 5 kg | Clarity and compatibility as a purchase gate | 7935 |
| What to check on an SDS or TDS | Technical documents for commercial use | 7936 |
| Comparing two bases properly | Evaporation, throw, clarity, reeds and cost per bottle | 7937 |
| Is a dearer base worth it at a lower load? | The base-price versus oil-saving trade | 7938 |
| Samples before a 25 kg order? | Sampling cost against bulk risk | 7939 |
| Selecting a commercial base, start to finish | The full method for this section | 7940 |
The other four sections pick up where this one stops. Starting out: raw materials and the first base is the series hub for beginners. How much fragrance oil to add owns load, by-weight maths and IFRA Category 10A. Weak diffusers, diagnosed owns throw problems, reeds and room conditions. Business, cost and wholesale owns budgets, margins and bulk buying. The series' other pillars are how to make a 100 ml diffuser without alcohol, Augeo-type versus DPG versus alcohol and starting a profitable reed diffuser business.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer for a base seller is "buy our premium base, it lasts longer and smells stronger". This page tells you that we publish no throw, evaporation or composition data for any base, refuses to rank the five in-stock bases, flags that the strongest-projection base is out of stock, and shows two decision lines that end in buying no base at all.
Base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026; fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, ml-to-gram conversion, per-bottle cost, kit total and cost-per-day figure on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity or evaporation data for its bases, so every density used here is a labelled example and every g/day figure is either yours to measure or a labelled arithmetic grid.
Bottle counts per arm, weighing days, the clarity checkpoints, the room-scoring protocol and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 100 ml fill in the 120 ml bottle, the 1.00 g per ml density, the 120 sq ft example room, the 30-minute scoring period and the g/day values in the arithmetic grid are labelled examples you replace with your own. Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Where millilitres are turned into grams, the page uses a labelled example density of 1.00 g per ml with a ±5% sensitivity (0.95–1.05 g/ml) — weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours; the 120 ml and 50 ml bottle sizes are listing sizes, not fill lines. Worked example: 100 ml example fill in the Gold 120 ml bottle = 100 g at the example density; at 20% = 20.0 g oil + 80.0 g base. Working practices: 3 bottles per arm plus 1 capped hold-back bottle, 6 black fibre reeds per bottle, 5% mixing allowance, weighings on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28, blind scoring on days 3, 7, 14 and 21 with a 30-minute example exposure, clarity at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night. Example room 120 sq ft = 11.15 m², 33.4 m³ at an example 3.0 m ceiling. Per-bottle costs use the oil's 1 kg rate, each base's 500 ml price at the example density, the 120 ml bottle at ₹106.20 and black reeds at ₹8.00 each (50-pack rate). The g/day values in the grid and money section are arithmetic examples, not measurements. Pure Performance 500 ml is cheaper per gram than the 100 g above 0.676 g per ml. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): every base page gives a 10–30% fragrance range of the total blend and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases", 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — "perfumery-grade", floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — warmth, roundness, "slow diffusion", chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils"; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. Marketing lines such as "performs in Indian climates", "no separation" and "even wicking" are claims to test. Some base pages mention rattan; CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, and no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; reed diameter, bottle neck size and fill line are not published. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page — the five are separated only by what their own pages say they are for. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST.
