Quick answers — read this first
Can you mix essential oil and fragrance oil in the same candle? Yes. The rule is that the combined weight counts as your fragrance load. At 8% of a 200 g candle that is 16 g in total — for example 11.2 g of Lavender Fragrance Oil and 4.8 g of essential oil, not 16 g plus a splash.

Which ceiling applies to a blend? The lower of the wax page and the fragrance oil page. CSI 464 states up to 10%; Lavender states 6–10% for candles, so 10% governs — 20 g of total scent in a 200 g candle. Your essential oil adds no allowance of its own.

Can you use essential oils and fragrance oils together in a candle?
Yes, and the only rule that matters is that they share one allowance. A fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, and the wax cannot tell the two liquids apart, so the combined weight is your load. At 8% in a 200 g candle that is 16 g of scent in total — a 70:30 split is 11.2 g of fragrance oil and 4.8 g of essential oil, never 16 g plus a splash. The governing percentage is the lower of the wax page and the oil page: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% and Lavender Fragrance Oil states 6–10% for candles, so 10% governs and the ceiling is 20 g in a 200 g candle. Your essential oil brings no ceiling of its own because its supplier almost certainly publishes no candle usage range. The short answer, and the one rule that governs everything after it

Yes, you can. What you cannot do is give the blend two allowances.

You can pour an essential oil and a fragrance oil into the same candle. Makers do it constantly, and the Lavender Fragrance Oil page effectively invites it: it lists rosemary, eucalyptus, chamomile, peppermint, cedar and vanilla as partners and says to blend for spa, herbal or calming profiles. Nothing about mixing the two categories is exotic — a composed fragrance oil is already a blend of many materials, some of them naturally derived, and adding one more aromatic material to it is a formulation decision, not a boundary crossing.

The rule that governs the whole exercise is arithmetic. A fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, and the wax does not distinguish between an essential oil and a fragrance oil when it decides how much liquid it can hold in solution. So if you have settled on 8% in a 200 g candle, your allowance is 16 g of scent in total. A 70:30 blend is 11.2 g of fragrance oil and 4.8 g of essential oil. It is not 16 g of fragrance oil plus a splash of essential oil on top, which is the single most common way a blended candle ends up sweating on the shelf.

The second rule follows from the first. Two ceilings already apply to any candle — the wax grade’s stated maximum and the oil page’s stated candle range, with the lower one governing. Your essential oil adds no third ceiling, because it almost certainly publishes no candle usage range at all. It simply spends the allowance the other two have already set. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Lavender states 6–10% for candles; the governing figure is 10%, which is 20 g in a 200 g candle, and both halves of your blend come out of that 20 g.

One thing to settle before the detail: CSI does not sell essential oils. Every essential-oil price here is an illustrative input you supply, not a CSI quote; the firm numbers are the fragrance-oil half. Why makers blend the two — four reasons that hold, one that does not

Three of these are formulation reasons. One is a marketing reason. One is a mistake with a spreadsheet behind it.

The reasons that hold up

Character the composed oil does not have. A distilled plant oil carries a roughness — the camphor edge of a real eucalyptus, the green bite of true lemongrass — that a smooth composed oil is often engineered away from. A 10–20% essential-oil fraction puts it back without carrying the candle. Throw the essential oil cannot deliver alone. The commonest honest reason: the fragrance oil fills the room, the essential oil supplies the character. Cost control in the other direction. If your range is built on an expensive plant oil, replacing most of it with a documented fragrance oil at ₹5.22 a gram cuts the material cost sharply. Range coherence. One base with three essential-oil accents gives three related products from one inventory line (spa and relaxation scents).

The reason that does not

“Adding essential oil makes the candle natural, and I can charge more for it.” Two problems. The first is that the blend is not more natural in any sense you can describe in writing — you have a composed fragrance oil doing most of the work with a plant oil riding along, and the honest label for that is a blend. The second is that it usually costs more rather than less: a 70:30 split with an essential oil at an illustrative ₹15.00 a gram takes the scent cost up by about 56%. Pricing that as a premium is fine if the candle is better. Pricing it as a premium because of a word on the label is a claim you will struggle to defend.

Adding the essential oil on top of a full fragrance load. This is the failure that fills inboxes. Sixteen grams of fragrance oil plus 4 g of essential oil in a 200 g candle is 10% — right at the CSI 464 ceiling, and above the 6–10% the Lavender page states if you were already at the top of that band. Above the governing figure, soy stops holding it: you get beading on day two, a wet ring at the glass by day five, and a wick that drowns the first time it is lit (why candles sweat fragrance oil). Decide the total first, then split it.
Assuming the fragrance oil’s IFRA claim covers your blend. When a CSI page states IFRA certification, that statement is about the oil in the bottle at the rates on that page. The moment you add a material of your own, the product being assessed is yours, not the one on the page. That is not a reason to avoid blending — it is a reason to keep your own record of what went in, at what grams, and to ask your essential-oil supplier for their documentation the way you would ask CSI for MSDS and IFRA paperwork.

One ceiling, two claimants: the maths in grams

Write the total in grams before you write the ratio. Every blending problem that reaches WhatsApp skipped this step.

Work in three moves. First, find the governing percentage: the lower of what your wax page states and what your fragrance oil page states. Second, turn it into grams for your fill weight — wax grams times the percentage. Third, split those grams by your chosen ratio. Nothing in this changes because one of the two liquids is a distilled plant oil.

Two observations. The oil page governs more often than the wax page, because most CSI oils that suit an essential-oil partner stop at 10% for soy while two of the waxes go to 13%. And the essential oil never widens the band: 10% is 20 g of liquid whether it is all Lavender or 14 g of Lavender and 6 g of your own. If the blend needs more than 20 g to smell right in that jar, the answer is a different oil or a different wick, not a bigger number (weak throw at a high load).

WRITE THE RECIPE AS FOUR NUMBERS
Before every blended pour, write four numbers on the batch sheet: wax grams, governing percentage, total scent grams, split in grams. For example: 200 · 8% · 16 · 11.2 + 4.8. If you cannot fill all four in, you are not ready to melt. This single habit removes most blending failures, and it is the record you will need if a customer ever asks what is in the candle.

Temperature, order and what actually goes wrong in the pot

Two liquids, one stir. The mistakes are all about heat and sequence.

The mechanics are ordinary. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to about 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C, stir slowly for two full minutes and pour at 75–80°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 puts the add at 85°C. A blend does not change that window. What changes is that you now have two materials with two different volatilities going in, and the sequence matters.

Pre-blend in a cup, not in the pot. Weigh both liquids into a small cup first, stir them together, and add the mixture to the wax as one pour. Adding them separately means the first one begins dispersing while the second is still being weighed, and your two-minute stir becomes two uneven stirs. A Bamboo Stirring Stick set is ₹118.00 for five; the CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349.00 is worth it once batches pass a kilogram.

Add at the lower end of the window. CSI publishes a numeric flash point on 16 of its 92 oil pages, and those it does publish are high — Eucalyptus Spearmint 199°C, Sage and Cedarwood 190°C, Sandalwood 203°C — comfortably above an 80–90°C add. Distilled plant oils as a class are not uniformly that high, and your supplier’s document is the only authority on yours. Where either material has a low or unknown flash point, add around 80–82°C and keep the lid on the pot. Flash point is a handling and storage property, not the temperature at which scent burns off, but that is exactly why it is worth respecting.

Then leave it alone. Every re-melt is another heat cycle on the most volatile material in the jar, usually the essential-oil half. Pour, let it set undisturbed, and judge it on the schedule below. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 and a stirring stick set — ₹472.00 together — is the whole equipment list.

Topping up a weak blend by remelting the poured candle. Remelting a set jar and stirring in another 2 g of essential oil does three things, none of them good: it pushes the total above the governing figure, it heat-cycles the fragrance oil a second time, and it usually leaves a visible sinkhole or a rough top where the wax reset unevenly. If a blend is weak, the next batch is the fix, not this one. Keep the failed jar as a reference sample and write down what it was.

The four-jar ratio test that finds your blend

One variable, four jars, one written verdict. Anything less and you are guessing with expensive liquid.

The point of this test is to hold the total load constant and move only the ratio, so that the difference you smell is the difference you made. Four 50 g micro-batches of CSI 464 — ₹31.27 of wax and wick each, ₹252.52 for the set including four White Matte Votive Jars at ₹31.86 — will settle a question that a kilogram of guessing will not. At 8% of 50 g, each jar takes 4 g of scent in total.

Read the surfaces at day three, before you smell anything On 20 September, look at all four tops in daylight, side by side. The control tells you what a clean surface looks like in your workshop this week. If B, C or D show beading, an oily sheen or a wet ring at the glass while A is dry, the ratio has gone past what this wax will hold — note which jar failed first and treat that as your ceiling. Frosting and small texture differences are cosmetic, not the signal.

Score cold throw at day seven, blind, in one sitting On 24 September, have someone else shuffle the four jars. Lift each lid for five seconds and score 1–5 for strength and 1–5 for character. Cold throw will not predict hot throw, but it is where an essential-oil fraction shows up most clearly — the plant material is at its most obvious before the wax is ever warmed.

Burn all four at day fourteen, an hour apart, in the same room Soy keeps developing: the Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy containers (why a candle needs a 14-day cure). On 1 October burn each jar for three hours in the same closed room, one at a time, walking in from outside to score. Record melt-pool width at one, two and three hours as well as strength — a blend that reads weak often has a pool problem, not a scent problem (wick sizing by diameter).

Expect one of three outcomes, and all three are useful. The control wins, and you have saved yourself an ingredient — pour the pure fragrance oil and put the essential oil back on the shelf. B or C wins, and you have a ratio to write down and repeat. D wins on character but loses on throw, the classic blended-candle result — move back towards C and re-test rather than accepting the weaker jar. What the blend costs — in rupees per candle and in scrapped batches

Blending almost never saves money. It sometimes earns it. Those are different sentences.

Half of this costing is firm and half is yours. The firm half: Lavender Fragrance Oil is ₹5,221.00 per kilogram, ₹5.22 a gram, so 16 g in a 200 g candle at 8% is ₹83.54. With ₹101.48 of CSI 464 and a ₹5.90 wick, the whole unscented-to-finished materials cost is ₹190.92. The other half depends entirely on what you pay for your essential oil, so the table below runs three illustrative per-gram rates rather than pretending to know.

Read the middle column. At ₹15.00 a gram — an unremarkable rate for a decent plant oil — a 70:30 blend costs ₹130.48 of scent against ₹83.54 for the pure fragrance oil, roughly 56% more, and the finished candle materials go from ₹190.92 to ₹237.86. Only the cheapest column shows the blend at or below the fragrance-oil price. So the commercial case for blending is almost never savings; it is that the blended candle sells for more, or sells at all, because of what it smells like. If that is true for your customers, the extra ₹72.00 a candle is a sound investment. If it is not, you are paying for a word (how to price candles in India).

The cost that actually hurts is the scrapped batch. Take a modest production run: 5 kg of CSI 464 at ₹2,537.00, 25 candles of 200 g, 400 g of scent at 8%, split 70:30 as 280 g of Lavender at ₹1,461.88 and 120 g of your essential oil, plus 25 C1 wicks at ₹147.50. That is ₹4,146.38 before the essential oil and before jars. If the blend sweats because the total quietly went to 11% while you were thinking in ratios rather than grams, that is the number you lose. Four test jars cost ₹252.52.

What you can put on the label — and what an IFRA claim does not cover

The wax forgives an imprecise recipe. A customer question does not.

Describe the blend, not an ideal of it. “Scented with a lavender fragrance oil blended with lavender essential oil” is accurate and sells perfectly well. “Pure essential oil candle” describes a different product, and a customer who came for that one will notice. The same applies to “natural”: a blend containing a composed fragrance oil is a blend, and saying so costs you far less than being corrected in a comment thread.

Make no health, therapeutic or wellbeing claims. Not for the essential oil, not for the fragrance oil, not for the blend. CSI does not make them for its oils and neither should your label. “Calming” as a description of a scent is fine; a claim that a candle treats, relieves or improves anything is a different kind of statement, and nothing on any product page supports it. The Lavender page positions the oil for relaxation candles and sleep-themed collections — positioning, not a medical claim, and the right register to copy.

An IFRA claim belongs to the bottle it was made about. When a CSI oil page states IFRA certification — 46 of the 92 pages do — the statement is about that oil at those rates. Your blend is a new composition, so the correct sentence on your own material is about what you used, not a certification you inherited. Keep every supplier’s documentation in one place: MSDS and IFRA paperwork for the CSI oil is available on request via WhatsApp, and your essential-oil supplier should provide the equivalent. If they cannot, that is worth knowing before 200 jars.

THE FIVE-LINE BATCH RECORD
For every blended batch, record: date poured; wax grade and grams; fragrance oil, lot and grams; essential oil, supplier, lot and grams; governing percentage and total scent grams. Five lines, thirty seconds, and it answers almost any question a buyer, a marketplace or a customer can ask — including the one where they loved a candle from eight months ago and want it again.

Three CSI fragrance oils that take an essential-oil partner well

The fragrance-oil half should be the half with the published numbers. Choose it first.

A good blending base has three properties: a stated candle range so the governing figure is clear, strong throw so it can carry the room while the plant oil carries the character, and a profile that sits in the same family as the essential oil you intend to add. These three qualify on all counts, and all three state 0% vanillin or an explicit no-discolouration note where it matters for pale wax.

The page states a candle load of up to 10% in soy and up to 6% in paraffin, a flash point of 199°C, 0% vanillin with zero discolouration risk, IFRA certification, and cure guidance of 48–72 hours for soy. That flash point matters here: it gives you a wide margin at an 80–90°C add, so if you are pairing it with a plant oil whose flash point you are less sure of, the fragrance-oil half is not the constraint. The base for anyone blending in cedarwood, vetiver, frankincense or clary sage. Its page is thinner than the other two — it states a candle load of up to 10% for soy and up to 6% for paraffin, a flash point of 190°C and 0% vanillin with no discolouration risk, but publishes no scent family or note pyramid, and this guide will not invent one. At ₹6,867.60/kg it is the dearest of the three, ₹109.88 for 16 g, so a 70:30 split with a woody essential oil is a genuinely expensive candle — price it accordingly rather than absorbing it. Two more worth knowing about. Lemongrass and Lime at ₹590.00 for 100 gm states 6–10% and IFRA certification, and is the obvious base if the essential oil you want to add is lemongrass or citronella; the 1 kg pack is thinly stocked, so plan around the 100 gm and 500 gm sizes. And Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832.00/kg, 6–10% for soy, is the cheapest citrus anchor CSI lists at ₹45.31 for 16 g — useful because citrus essential oils are the ones that give up first in a candle (the lemongrass and lime guide).

The blend someone has already done for you

A handful of CSI pages state that the oil itself contains natural essential oils: Saffron Cedarwood at ₹6,867.60/kg describes elemi among them, Mahogany Shea at ₹488.52 for 100 gm lists cedarwood, cedar leaf, patchouli and olibanum, and Orchard Pear at ₹3,738.00/kg lists orange peel, lemon peel, lemon oil, nutmeg and lime oil. If what you want from blending is plant-derived character with a candle load already printed on the page, these are the short cut — one bottle, one number, one supplier document. It is a narrower choice than blending your own, and it is a far easier one to repeat at 200 jars (candles without essential oils).

And the closing position, which does not sell the most oil. For most Indian makers, most of the time, a single documented fragrance oil at the right load in the right wick is a better candle than a blend — it throws more reliably, costs less, repeats exactly and can be defended in writing. Blend when you have a reason you can say out loud: a character you cannot buy, a range that needs three siblings, a customer who asks for it. Frequently asked questions

Do essential oils and fragrance oils count towards the same fragrance load?
Yes. The load is a percentage of wax weight and the wax holds a finite amount of liquid in solution, regardless of what that liquid is. Add both weights together and compare the total to the governing percentage — the lower of your wax page and your fragrance oil page. At 8% of 200 g that total is 16 g.
What is a good starting ratio for a fragrance oil and essential oil blend?
Start at 85:15 or 70:30 with the fragrance oil leading, because the composed oil is the half engineered to fill a room. Pour a 100:0 control alongside. Move towards 50:50 only if the blind day-14 burn says the character is worth the throw you give up.
At what temperature should I add a blend to the wax?
The same window the wax pages give — 80–90°C, with the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asking for a slow two-minute stir and a pour at 75–80°C. Pre-blend the two liquids in a cup and add them as one. If either material has a low or unpublished flash point, work at the lower end, around 80–82°C.
Will blending make my candle smell more natural?
It will make it smell different, which is a better reason. A candle containing a composed fragrance oil is a blend however much plant oil is in it, and describing it as anything else invites a question you cannot answer. Say what is in it and let the scent do the rest.
Can I still say my candle is IFRA certified if I blend?
No. An IFRA statement on a CSI oil page — 46 of the 92 pages carry one — is about that oil at those rates, not about a composition you created. Keep the documentation for each material you used, available on request via WhatsApp for CSI oils, and describe your own product accurately instead.
My blended candle sweats after three days. What went wrong?
Almost always the total, not the ratio. Add both weights again: if 16 g of fragrance oil met 4 g of essential oil in a 200 g candle, you poured 10% — at or over the governing figure for most CSI oil pages. Drop the total to 8% (16 g), keep the ratio, and repour.
