Quick answers — read this first
Can you use perfume in candles? No. A perfume is fragrance dissolved in an alcohol base — CSI’s fine-fragrance pages publish 15% in alcohol base as the starting rate, up to 25% for an extrait. Alcohol boils at about 78°C, below the 80–90°C window CSI wax pages give for adding fragrance, and soy cannot hold what is left.

What happens if I pour perfume into wax? Most of the base boils out of the pot with the top notes, the rest separates as the jar cools into a greasy film and beads around the wick, and the flame flares and soots because the wick draws up whatever is in the pool. The candle also smells of almost nothing — 16 g of a 15% perfume delivers 2.4 g of fragrance.

Is it dangerous? Alcohol vapour is flammable, so generating it over a hot surface is a real risk, and spraying perfume on a wick before lighting causes a sudden flare. Do not do that one at all. The rest is mostly a waste of wax rather than a hazard.

What should I use instead? A fragrance oil with a published candle percentage. CSI’s fine-fragrance-grade oils are built from perfumery materials and dosed for wax at 7–10% — 16 g of Royal Apricot is ₹58.67.

The answer: no, in any format — eau de parfum, eau de toilette, body mist or deodorant spray. All are built on a base that soy wax cannot hold.

What it shows: the boiling point of ethanol against the temperatures a soy candle is actually made at, plus the four numeric flash points CSI publishes at the two ends of its range. The fragrance-add window and pour band are from CSI wax product pages; the flash points are from the individual oil pages. Deliberately left out: any ranking of scent strength, any figure for how much alcohol leaves at a given temperature, and the melt-pool temperature of a burning candle — CSI does not publish that, and this page does not estimate it.
Straight answer
Can you use perfume in candles?
No, and the reason is a number CSI publishes on its own pages. The fine-fragrance-grade oil pages — Delina inspired, Rasasi Hawas, Afnan 9 PM inspired and the rest — say to start a perfume at 15% fragrance in an alcohol base and take it to 25% for an extrait, while the same pages put candles at 7–10% of wax weight, up to 10%. So a perfume is 75–85% base by design, and that base is alcohol. Three things then go wrong in sequence. Ethanol boils at about 78°C, below the 80–90°C window the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives for adding fragrance, so most of it leaves the pot and takes the volatile top notes with it. Whatever survives will not enter the crystal lattice soy forms as it sets — that lattice is exactly what a wax page is describing when it publishes up to 10% for CSI 464 or up to 13% for the Chunks — so it separates into a film on top, beads around the wick and breaks glass adhesion. And a wick cannot filter: it draws the pool up and burns it, which means flaring, soot and a tunnelling burn. The arithmetic closes it either way. To land the usual 16 g of fragrance in a 200 g candle you would need 107 g of a 15% perfume, 53% of the wax weight; hold the perfume to a legitimate 8% instead and you have added 2.4 g of fragrance, about a seventh of a normal load. Use an oil built for wax: Royal Apricot at 7% costs ₹51.34 in a 200 g candle, and if it is perfume you actually want, CSI sells the concentrate, the bases and bottles and a Solid Body Perfume Making Kit separately, which is the point.
One line: Perfume is 75–85% alcohol base by CSI’s own published rates, alcohol boils below the 80–90°C add window, and no percentage of it both scents a candle and lets the candle set.
The short answer is no. A finished perfume is mostly alcohol — on CSI’s own fine-fragrance pages the published starting rate is 15% fragrance in an alcohol base, rising to 25% for an extrait. The other 75–85% is a carrier that soy wax cannot hold and a wick should never meet. Use a fragrance oil sold with a candle percentage instead: CSI lists 92, and 72 of those pages publish a candle usage range.

What is actually in a bottle of perfume

You are not holding fragrance. You are holding a small amount of fragrance dissolved in a large amount of something that evaporates.

Spray a perfume on your wrist and within thirty seconds the wet patch is gone and the scent is still there. That is the whole design. A perfume is built to deliver its fragrance from skin, at room temperature, in seconds — so the fragrance is dissolved in a fast-evaporating alcohol base that carries it off the skin and into the air, then disappears. A candle is built to do the opposite: hold the fragrance in a solid block for months, then release it slowly from a warm pool of liquid wax over several hours.

You do not have to take that on trust, because CSI publishes the perfume rate. On the fine-fragrance-grade oil pages — Parfums De Marly Delina inspired, Rasasi Hawas, Afnan 9 PM inspired and the rest of that family — the usage guidance reads start at 15% in alcohol base and adjust up to 25% for extrait formats. The same pages list candles (soy, paraffin and blends) up to 10%, with a recommended load of 7–10% and a suggestion to start at 7%.

So a perfume built the way CSI’s own pages describe is 85 g of base in every 100 g at the starting rate, or 75 g in every 100 g if it is made as an extrait. A commercial eau de toilette is normally weaker again. That base is the problem, and everything below is what it does.

The honest row is the fourth one. Nobody who sells a finished perfume prints its fragrance concentration on the carton, so the only numbers on this page that can be trusted precisely are CSI’s own published rates for building a perfume from concentrate. Where this page says “commonly 10–15%” for solid perfume, treat that as general trade practice, not a CSI figure.

You assumed an expensive perfume must be strong enough for a candle. Price tracks the raw materials and the brand, not the concentration — and even at the 25% extrait rate CSI publishes, three quarters of the bottle is still base. Pour 16 g of a 25% perfume into 200 g of wax and you have delivered 4 g of actual fragrance, or 2% of wax weight, which is roughly a quarter of a normal load. The candle smells faint and wet at the same time.

What alcohol does between 80°C and the wick

Three separate failures, and they happen in order: in the pot, in the jar, then at the flame.

1. In the pot: it leaves before the candle does

Ethanol boils at about 78°C. CSI’s wax pages put the fragrance-add window at 80–90°C — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes, and the Eco Soy CSI 400 page says add at 85°C within an 80–90°C range. Every one of those numbers is above the point at which alcohol stops behaving like a liquid. Pour perfume into wax at 85°C and a large part of the base boils out of the pot in front of you, taking the volatile top notes with it, because the lightest fragrance molecules are exactly the ones that ride out on the alcohol.

That is also why the melter smells magnificent and the finished candle smells of very little. What you can smell in the workshop is the fragrance leaving. There is a second, less obvious cost: alcohol vapour is flammable, and a domestic Indian kitchen with a gas hob, a double boiler and an open window is not the place to generate it. If you use an electric melter rather than a flame you have removed the ignition source, but you have not removed the vapour.

2. In the jar: wax and alcohol do not mix

Whatever base survives the pot does not dissolve into soy. Soy wax sets by crystallising — the fatty-acid chains lock into a lattice as the jar cools, and that lattice will hold a limited amount of oily liquid and essentially none of a polar solvent like alcohol. This is what a wax page means when it publishes a maximum: up to 10% of total wax weight on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. Alcohol is not inside that allowance at any percentage. It separates as the jar cools, and you get the classic set: a greasy film across the top, beads around the wick, pits and craters where trapped vapour escaped, and glass adhesion that never forms, so the candle shows wet-looking patches down the side.

3. At the flame: the wick burns whatever reaches it

A wick is a pump. It draws liquid up from the pool and vapourises it just above the tab. It has no way to decline a material it was not designed for. A wick fed a soy-plus-solvent mixture behaves unpredictably: the flame flares as a pocket of volatile liquid arrives, then gutters and self-extinguishes when the next pocket of wax is too rich in something that will not combust cleanly. You see soot on the glass, a mushroomed carbon head on the wick, and a burn that tunnels because the pool never reaches the edge. None of that is a wick-size problem, so no amount of moving between Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) will fix it.

Your test candle looked fine on day one and wept by day three. Separation is not instant. The wax sets first and the base migrates out afterwards, which in an Indian summer — a shelf at 38–42°C in Delhi or Nagpur, or a courier van parked in the sun — happens in a couple of days rather than a couple of weeks. If a maker tells you perfume “worked fine” in their candle, ask what it looked like at day fourteen and what the second burn was like. A single fresh pour proves nothing.

The number that closes the argument

Work it from the fragrance you need, not from the bottle you have.

This series costs everything on one unit: 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured. The 16 g is the part that has to arrive. Neat oil delivers it one gram for one gram. A perfume built at the 15% rate CSI publishes delivers 0.15 g of fragrance per gram of liquid, so you would have to pour in about 107 g — which is 53% of the wax weight, five times the 10% CSI 464 allows, and the batch would never set. Run it the other way and hold the perfume to a legitimate 8% of wax, 16 g of liquid, and you have added 2.4 g of fragrance: 1.2% of wax weight, about a seventh of a normal load.

There is no percentage that works. Below the ceiling the candle is unscented; above it, the candle is not a candle. That is the whole of the perfume question, and every other objection on this page is a reason why even the impossible version would still fail.

The wick cannot filter.
A diffuser reed can decline what it will not carry and your skin can decline what it will not absorb. A wick draws up everything in the pool and puts it through a flame, which is why a candle is the least forgiving place to improvise a fragrance.

The four shortcuts people try, and what each one does

Every one of these gets asked on WhatsApp. Three are a waste of money and one is genuinely unsafe.

Spraying perfume into the melted wax

This is the arithmetic above, plus an aerosol. Ten seconds of spraying delivers perhaps two or three grams of liquid, of which under half a gram is fragrance — about 0.25% of a 200 g pour. You will smell it while you work and not afterwards. It is also the version most likely to put alcohol mist over a hot surface, so if you have already decided to test it, do not do it over a flame.

Spraying the wick before lighting

Do not. A wick wet with an alcohol-based liquid lights with a sudden flare that is nothing like a normal candle flame — the alcohol ignites across the whole wetted length at once, and any of it that has run down onto the wax surface goes up with it. There is no scent benefit to balance that: the alcohol burns off in seconds and the tiny quantity of fragrance with it. This is the only item on the page CSI would ask you not to try even once.

Pouring perfume on top of a finished candle

It does not soak in, because set soy is crystalline and non-porous. It sits in the dish the wax has formed, dissolves nothing, and either evaporates over a day or two or runs down the inside of the glass when the candle is tilted. When the candle is next lit, the first thing the flame meets is a surface film of solvent. Cosmetically the jar is now marked, because the film lifts the wax surface unevenly and leaves a dull ring you cannot polish out.

Using perfume in wax melts because there is no flame

Removing the flame removes one of the three failures, not the other two. A wax melt still has to set solid in a clamshell, still crystallises, and still cannot hold a solvent — you get a soft, weeping cube that sticks to the packaging. It also has to survive an Indian courier route at 40°C-plus, which finished melts barely manage at the best of times. If the ambition is a strong melt, that is a fragrance-load question, not a perfume question: melt pages on CSI oils commonly publish 10–15% of total wax weight, higher than the candle figure precisely because there is no wick to worry about.

IF YOU WANT TO TEST IT ANYWAY
Test it small and test it honestly. Melt 50 g of wax, add your perfume at whatever percentage you were planning, pour it into a spare glass and label it with the date. Alongside it, pour a second 50 g jar with the matching CSI oil at the candle rate — with Delina inspired at 7% that second jar costs ₹67.20 in materials. Leave both fourteen days. You will not need a burn test to decide; the tops will have told you by day three. Spending ₹67.20 to stop yourself ruining a five-kilo batch is the cheapest experiment in this guide.
The practical route: CSI’s fine-fragrance-grade oils are built from the same perfumery materials and published with a candle percentage — 7–10% of wax weight, starting at 7%. Why the perfume you love would not smell like that anyway

Even if the alcohol problem vanished, you would not get the candle you imagined.

A perfume is composed for a temperature curve that a candle never travels. On skin it starts at roughly 32–35°C and cools; the top notes flash off in the first fifteen minutes, the heart carries the next two hours, and the base is what remains at bedtime. That sequence is the product. A candle has no sequence. It holds everything cold for weeks, then presents it all at once from a pool of molten wax that is far hotter than skin and stays at that temperature for hours. The volatile citrus and aldehydic materials that make a perfume sparkle on a wrist are gone from a melt pool in the first twenty minutes, while the heavy base materials that were meant to be a whisper at the end sit there dominating the room all evening.

This is why a fragrance oil built for candles is not simply a perfume without the alcohol. The oils in CSI’s fine-fragrance range are described on their pages as engineered for consistent performance across candles, perfumes, soaps and diffusers — the same character, dosed differently for each format. That is a formulation decision, not a dilution. It is also why the honest expectation for any inspired-by oil is “recognisably the same family, not the same bottle”, and why CSI publishes a note pyramid on those pages so you can check the direction before you buy 1 kg.

There is one more Indian wrinkle. A jar candle on a Mumbai shelf in August lives at 30–33°C with humidity in the eighties, and a Delhi shelf in May lives at 40°C-plus. Cold throw — what the customer smells when they open the lid in the shop — is stronger in that heat than it would be in a European room, and some heavy oriental materials that read as luxurious in winter read as cloying in a monsoon flat. Test in the season you will sell in, not the one you are pouring in.

The discolouration note is honest: low to moderate, from the vanilla content, so a white wax may take a slight cream tone over time. That is cosmetic. At 7% in 200 g of CSI 464 the fragrance costs ₹51.34 and the whole candle comes to ₹158.72 in materials — within a couple of rupees of what a mid-range classic oil costs, which is the reason to start here rather than at the top of the range.

A rose floral, and the page carries the full set: recommended load 7–10%, candles up to 10%, IFRA claim stated, a low-to-moderate discolouration note from the vanilla and oud, plus the perfume and soap rates that make the format difference explicit — 15% in an alcohol base, up to 5% in cold-process soap. At 7% in a 200 g candle the fragrance is ₹167.33 and the candle is ₹274.71 in materials, roughly ₹118.24 more than the same candle made with a classic floral. Whether that gap is worth it is a positioning question, not a quality one — and it is the honest reason most Indian brands should not build a whole range on this tier.

If you actually want to make perfume, make perfume

The urge behind the question is usually sound. It is the format that is wrong.

Most people who ask this question are not really trying to save money on fragrance oil. They have a scent they love and they want it in their house, or they want their candle brand to carry a signature that matches a perfume they already sell. Both are reasonable, and both have a proper route that costs less than ruining a batch of wax.

The straightforward version: buy the concentrate and build the perfume from it, at the rates CSI publishes. Fifteen grams of Delina inspired makes 100 g of perfume at the published 15% start rate and costs ₹179.28 in oil; take it to the 25% extrait rate and 25 g costs ₹298.80. Bottles are stocked separately — 10 ml perfume bottles are ₹400.00 for ten, ₹40.00 each. The alcohol base itself sits in the Fine Perfume Base and Accessories range rather than with the candle materials, which is the clearest signal CSI can give that these are two different production lines.

The version that suits a candle brand better is solid perfume, because it needs no alcohol at all and it ships through an Indian courier network without a leak risk. CSI stocks a Solid Body Perfume Making Kit at ₹799.00 and Solid Perfume Tin Containers at ₹472.00. For a Diwali hamper — and Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, so the pour date for a 14–21 day cure plus transit is around mid-October — a jar candle and a matching solid perfume in one box is a far better use of the same fragrance than any attempt to get perfume into wax.

Where CSI will be blunt: it does not publish flash points or technical data for its perfume bases, and it is not going to tell you that any fragrance is safe on skin. The oil pages that carry an IFRA line say the oil is certified against those standards at stated rates; that is the page’s claim, and skin products are your responsibility to formulate and test. Ask on WhatsApp for MSDS and IFRA documentation before you build anything you intend to sell.

How to match a perfume with a candle oil, in four steps

Forty minutes of work and about a hundred rupees of materials replaces the whole idea.

Find the family, not the name. Put the perfume on a paper strip and leave it two hours. Ignore the first ten minutes entirely — that is the part a candle will never reproduce. What is left at two hours is the heart and base, and that is what a melt pool will give you all evening. Write down three words for it: warm or fresh, sweet or dry, floral, woody, citrus, gourmand, spiced. Then read the note pyramids on the Fine Perfume Fragrances pages and shortlist two oils whose base notes match your three words.

Buy the smallest honest quantity of each. The fine-fragrance pages start at 50 g. Two at 50 g is a real cost — ₹183.00 for Royal Apricot, ₹454.00 for Hawas Ice inspired — but it is a fraction of the kilo you would otherwise guess at. Where an oil from the classic range is in the same family, take a 15 g trial of that as a third contender: many of those start under ₹100.00.

Pour 50 g jars at the recommended starting load. Use 50 g of wax and 3.5 g of oil for 7%, weighed on a scale, not measured by eye. Melt to the wax page’s window, add the fragrance at 80–90°C, stir slowly for two full minutes, pour at 75–80°C. One jar per oil, same wax, same wick, same day, labelled with oil and percentage. With Delina inspired that jar is ₹67.20 in wax and fragrance.

Judge at fourteen days, not at twenty-four hours. Some oil pages give a 24–48 hour cure and that is a fair statement of when a candle can first be lit. Soy throw keeps developing well past that — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself says cure a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. Smell each jar cold at day fourteen, then burn each for two hours in the same closed room on separate days. Choose on the second hour of the burn, which is the hour your customer will actually experience.
You matched the perfume perfectly on the blotter and the candle smelled wrong. Blotters reward volatility: whatever evaporates fastest wins in the first two minutes, which is exactly backwards for a candle. Judge a candle oil from a cured jar with a flame in it, and judge it in the room size you sell into — a 14 m² Mumbai bedroom and a 40 m² open-plan living room are different products from the same jar. If you are testing several, burn them on separate days; your nose stops discriminating after the second candle in a session.

What CSI will not tell you, and what to ask for

Some of the most useful things about this subject are not on any product page, and saying so is more useful than inventing them. CSI does not publish the fragrance concentration of any finished perfume, because it does not make finished perfumes — it sells the concentrate and the bases separately. It does not publish a melt-pool temperature for any wax, so nobody can tell you precisely how much of a solvent would survive a burn. Sixteen of the 92 oil pages carry a numeric flash point; the fine-fragrance family states “above 93°C” rather than a single figure. Where a number is missing it is missing, not implied.

What you can get, on request and in writing, is the documentation: MSDS and IFRA papers on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926, GST invoicing on every order, and bulk pricing beyond the published pack sizes. If you are building a range you intend to sell, ask for the documents before the first kilo, not after a customer asks. Two of CSI’s public reviews criticise delivery charges, and that is a fair thing to weigh when you decide between a 100 g pack now and a 1 kg pack later — consolidating into one larger order is usually the cheaper answer.

ONE MORE THING ABOUT ALCOHOL
The only alcohol with a legitimate place in candle making is the surface kind. CSI stocks an Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹383.00 for 150 ML and ₹520.00 for 1 Litre, and it is for cleaning glass before a pour and wiping equipment between fragrances. It goes on the jar, never in the melter, and never on a wick or a burning candle. If you have been reusing a pouring jug between two strong fragrances without wiping it, that is a far more likely cause of a muddled scent than anything to do with your oil.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add just a little perfume on top of my normal fragrance oil to boost it?
It does not help and it costs you headroom. Alcohol still counts as liquid the crystal structure has to hold, so you are spending part of a 10% or 13% ceiling on something that mostly boils off and separates. If you want more throw, take the neat oil towards the lower of the two published ceilings and extend the cure to 14–21 days.
Is it safe to spray perfume on a candle before lighting it?
No. An alcohol-based liquid on a wick or on the wax surface ignites across the whole wetted area at once, which is a flare rather than a flame. There is no scent benefit either — the alcohol and the very small quantity of fragrance in it are gone within seconds. This is the one thing on this page not worth testing even once.
What about perfume oil rather than perfume — the kind sold in small roll-on bottles?
That is a different product and the answer depends on what is in it. If it is neat concentrate it may be usable, but it needs a published candle percentage before it goes into wax; if it has been diluted into a carrier oil for skin, it is mostly carrier and behaves like any pre-diluted blend. Send a photo of the label to WhatsApp rather than guessing.
Why does my melter smell amazing and my candle smell of nothing?
Because what you can smell in the workshop is fragrance leaving the pot. It is the normal symptom of a volatile carrier boiling off, and it is also what happens if you add any fragrance well above the 80–90°C window or leave the pot uncovered and stirring for far longer than the two minutes CSI’s wax pages ask for.
Can I use perfume in wax melts, since there is no flame?
No. Removing the wick removes one failure out of three. The melt still has to set solid, still crystallises and still cannot hold a solvent, so you get a soft weeping cube that sticks to its clamshell and will not survive an Indian courier at 40°C. For a stronger melt, use the melt rate on the oil page — commonly 10–15% of total wax weight.
How close will a perfume-inspired fragrance oil actually get?
Close on family and character, not identical. The oils are composed to perform in wax at 7–10%, which is a different job from performing on skin at 15–25% in alcohol, and the top notes that define a perfume in its first ten minutes are the part a melt pool cannot reproduce. Judge the match on the dry-down of the perfume and on the second hour of the candle’s burn.
